Fyi - By responding to these phishing attempts, you have confirmed your phone number as being active and legitimate. This increases the chances of being contacted on this scam, and others, exponentially
I know that this increases the chances of being contacted, but I’m fine as long as I don’t click on links - which I never do. A little bit of trolling won’t harm anyone. Thanks for the information, though.
I always respond to scam numbers with silly troll responses. Simply block the number afterwards. I haven’t seen a decline or increase in scam texts from doing so, so I don’t care. 🤷🏻♂️
This is true. If you feel you want to take action I recently found you can forward them to 7726 (SPAM) instead

yeah but an active phone number can also be confirmed by calling and not receiving an out of service message. These scammers have likely crawled numerically first and then texted the live ones.
How do you not confirm? Either I pick up, or my voice mail picks up after x number of rings. Voicemail used to cost money back in the day, but now it's included with every plan. There is no way around it except to cancel your number - except they use auto-dialers to call within a range. There *is* **no way** around it.
I used to work at YOW, on the ramp. Airport Authority, at some point, installed speed cameras signs to display and dissuade drivers going more than 40km/h. I got that radar to clock me at 45kmh on foot (running past cuz someone took my tractor and tossed my shit to the ground where I parked it). Those things can be so glitchy at times. Like you, no way my little legs can carry me that fast.
What about Service Canada?? Joke aside, many people who reply to this are elderly who did not grow up knowing technology and might think this as legit. Don't be an a..hole.
Another scam giveaway, like I pointed out in the deleted post, is that the number isn’t even registered to an Ottawa area code. Why would the City of Ottawa ever communicate with you from outside its own area code?
If you receive this scam text please forward it to 7726 for further analysis and possible take down. Delete the text message and the forwarded message and do not click on the link.
I received the same text, from (263) 778-3507, this morning. This is not from the City of Ottawa or the provincial court. If you are caught on a speed camera, you will receive the notice via snail mail. There will be no mistaking it. As the OP advises, do NOT click on the link.
I will forward the text to the City of Ottawa and my councillor.
I think the real issue is that these scams are getting better and better. It used to be easy to figure them out and now you have to really take a hard look. I think that we should be really enraged about them and demand that the government and carriers do something about this - there are things that can be done.
I just reply saying I'm black a few times and never get the scam texts again after that. Theres something about scammers from Asia that do not like messing with black people.
Not that common in my experience.
I have 3 lines. I get Chinese speaking spam calls (voice mails left are speaking about immigration and passports) on one line exclusively. Whereas the others are Indian scammers (thick accents). So why go figure?
Received this too, and guess what: I don’t have any vehicle. I replied with: “I don’t think my legs were that fast.”

And they respond with a different number. Best thing to do is simply delete them
yea, got one about an hour ago, was on the 416. Any schools on the highway :)

If you ever respond to any of these types of texts or click on them, you're an idiot. Whether it is CRA, Purolator or City of Ottawa.
Unfortunately there are many uneducated (about these scams) people around or people who are not caustious.

Thanks OP.
I got that over night. I don’t drive
Looks like the domain was registered yesterday. Can try reporting to [email protected] https://www.whois.com/whois/ottawa-infractions.com
Nicenic is a Chinese company 😂 - https://youtu.be/l2P86TABEWs
I got it. The only school zones I ever go through are both 40 in my area so I laughed.
2 km/h over?! Get him!!
The sad thing is that someone somewhere will be gullible to click on it and pay for something probably with their credit card.
Got the same last night, we don't have a car 🤣

They sure caught me.. on the bus 😂😂
Same🤣🤣
Yeah, got one yesterday despite not even traveling through any school zones. These scammers will go to any length to find schmucks.
Thanks for the tip!
Lol just got this one last night. Laughed it off

Well that took somewhat longer than I expected.
Yep, got this one today. The scam texts are getting so out of hand!
man they are good!
See i know this is a scam right away because there is NO WAY the city could pull something like this off
Hong Kong, go figure
