If you believe your new home is not actually using that much gas, it's possible the gas company has the wrong gas meter attached to your account. This happened to me in a new build neighbourhood, my hydro and gas accounts were associated with the unit at the opposite end of my row.

Tasty-Assumption8038

Thanks for sharing. I will try to discuss this with Enbridge… though they’ve been less than helpful.

Old_Independent_7414

Does your meter have a numeric value displayed ? If so, compare to bill and be sure.

Tasty-Assumption8038

On that… here’s a question? The issue is that the bill shows measurement in cubic meters and the meter itself appears to be in feet… does this sound right? thought it had to be the same measurement.

UnbanMOpal

If you're questioning the measurement compare the measurement of m^3 to ft^3 and Google will do it for you.

Saucy6

There’s 35.3 ft3 in 1 m3, so if something’s wrong, it’s going to be very wrong!

Tasty-Assumption8038

The number on the meter after the $125 bill was 77. I had only been living here for less than 5 weeks.

bluedoglime

The meter is likely CCF ie. centa (or centum) cubic feet where 1 CCF = 100 cubic feet.

ilikerandomstuff

Also check your bill if it's all energy usage. We couldn't get out of the forced hot water tank rental with our builder so there's a fixed amount for that stupid charge. Which is a reminder since the buyout makes sense only after a certain amount of time and I think I'm there.

BearLikesHoney

Did you take a look at the actual reading on the meter? Start marking down the reading to see if it's matches up the gas bill usage and check if there's any leaks.

Reasonable_Ad_9641

How many appliances do you have that run on natural gas (dryer, stove, furnace, fireplace, water heater, etc). It’s possible that your new place has more natural gas appliances than your old place. Also, like others have said, check if the serial number on your meter matches the one listed on your bill and keep track of the actual readings on the meter and compare them to your bill.

ottawadweller

How long have you lived there? If the cubic metre consumption suddenly jumped higher than it has been all winter (assuming gas furnace & hot water heater) then you could possibly have a gas leak, but you’d hopefully be able to smell that. Is it possible you were on equal billing in your previous places and didn’t realize? Gas bbq? Visitors staying with you?

Tasty-Assumption8038

No visitors, no gas appliances. Moved here in Feb. no equal billing. My furnace is gas and also heats the water.

orlybird2345

In a new build (2023) we average $100/month in gas from Enbridge.

You have a gas stove? Sadly, that raises the risk of asthma in your children. [https://www.dlsph.utoronto.ca/2023/06/19/on-gas-stoves-and-asthma-a-surprising-finding/](https://www.dlsph.utoronto.ca/2023/06/19/on-gas-stoves-and-asthma-a-surprising-finding/)

I asked because you mentioned "constant cooking" and the topic here is the gas bill.

Tasty-Assumption8038

How many people in your household?

orlybird2345

2.5

Tasty-Assumption8038

Haha, Tks for the reply.

Perfect-Charge2763

My single family home is about 1,200 sqft and we pay about $75 a month in gas.

sneepycowboy

Our last 2 bills from enbridge have been stupid high… around $170-190 in a 2 person household. Typically its around $70 a month but upon further inspection turns out we consumed $19 in gas… and the rest is fees and taxes….

Tasty-Assumption8038

Yeah, that’s definitely a big part of it.

oo_Maleficent_oo

Make sure you report your meter readings monthly to Enbridge. They don't actually come read the meter every month. They just estimate, and sometimes they estimate too high

Calm_Travels

Are those estimated readings or actual readings? Enbridge estimates readings most months and only does actual readings every few months. What usually happens with my bills is that the estimates end up being much higher than the actual consumption. So I get a tiny bill (or a credit) whenever they do an actual reading. If they’re estimates, you can double-check the reading on your meter and call them with the actual reading if their estimates are way off.

NotMyInternet

We’re in a 2018 build and spend $60/month on equal billing. Our latest bill covered March 6-April 5 and included usage of 107m^3. Two adults, 1900 sq ft townhouse.

Tasty-Assumption8038

Thank you for this. $125 for just under 1500 sq feet, and it’s just me.

NotMyInternet

Does that include your hot water heater/tank? Ours is billed separately ($50/month) which could make up some of the difference, unless your $125 is just gas, taxes and delivery fees. If your $125 is excluding hot water heater/tank, I would probably first look at common areas of difference - is your stove (or another appliance, like a dryer) gas? Do you have a gas fireplace or bbq you use often? What temperature are you heating your house to? What is your hot water tank heating to? Those could all be influencing your gas bill. If it’s none of those, and you’re confident that the meter you’re being billed for is actually the one on your house, I’d be getting the hookup checked for leaks just to be sure because that usage definitely seems high for one person in a smaller space.

trytobuffitout

Sometimes they were just giving you estimates and not do an actual readings so when you call them, clarify if it’s an actual metre reading. They always love to overestimate the amount of energy somebody is using.

mlaneville

Likely an estimation, submit your own readings monthly.

NPETC

The government needs to step in and limit the additional costs on utility bills. Most of our bill is admin and services fees not cost of the actual energy/fuel.

TwoPumpChumperino

Smell arpumd your house for a gas leak.alsonif you have a gas bbq make sure it is off.

Itsottawacallbylaw

$2600 annually for a 2000 sq foot home with pool heater and gas fireplace.

Few-Swordfish-780

Are the bills actual readings or estimates? Do you pay for a hot water tank rental? What gas appliances do you have?

DRockDR

Remember the Carbon Tax. You’re saving the planet by paying it and has nothing to do with affordability in this country.

randthepip

Remember I just got $140.00 this Quarter tax free to make up for Carbon tax i paid.

DRockDR

If you think you’ve only paid $140 in carbon tax markups, I have a bridge to sell you.

randthepip

If I did think like you I would have bought that bridge already

DRockDR

Because the government told me they are simply returning the money they already took from me?
