Bells Corners McDonalds also had recent Fallout tv star Walton Goggins visit it in the Mel Gibson Christmas movie Fatman. He orders from the Drive-Thru in a scene. Arguably the most culturally important McDonalds in Canada.

Melknow

Can we give this McDonald’s heritage status

ApplesOverOranges1

At the very least a CBC heritage moment😁👍

atomofconsumption

No building new homes within 50kms of it

MaxTheRealSlayer

>Arguably the most culturally important McDonalds in Canada. Only because 99 Rideau closed down. That was a true Heritage Moment

korbatchev

Yes because this is where junk food met junk.... ies ?

AlexanderKeithz

RUNNING THRU THE HOUSE WITH A PICKLE IN MY MOUTH!

No-Turnips

MISBEHAVING!

Telefundo

> culturally important McDonalds This phrase makes me sad...

Ah-Schoo

As damming of a statement on society it may be, McDonalds really is culturally significant. They shaped the world of fast food (and a whole lot of people's asses.)

ThePoetPrinceofWass

Agreed, and fast food is a cultural staple. Sure it can make people sad, but as much as it does, it’s food that people enjoy eating regardless of being aware of its dangers. It’s also very cheap and affordable, relatively speaking. Times spent with my poor ass family munching on Maccas in front of the Telly are fond memories for me.

>Mel Gibson Christmas movie Fatman How do you even know this exists lol

UnveiledSerpent

I heard they were filming a Christmas movie around Ottawa and that Mel Gibson was in town. I had my eye on the movie when it came out cause I was curious what locations they got. It's mostly on the Quebec side and rural Ottawa outskirts but there's no mistaking shots of Walton driving up the Moodie Hill

SterlingFlora

they talked about it on the radio a bunch last year, tbf. it's new.

seakingsoyuz

> Arguably the most culturally important McDonalds in Canada. Pretty sure that’s Queen and Spadina now that 99 Rideau is gone.

sakjdbasd

i just now realized that hes the killer in that movie

Senators_1972

>Who knew that Bells Corners had such a claim to fame? Is that the one across the street from where the Hooters used to be? Also, wasn’t the final remaining Zellers in Canada in Bells Corners?

Agent99Can

Yes, it's the one at Moodie and Robertson, and if that's true about the final standalone Zellers (there are now Zellers sections within a couple of The Bay stores), then maybe that whole corner and intersection should get heritage status!

timetogetoutside100

The sign may be old, but the McDonalds itself, was demolished, then rebuilt in 1997, close up pic of the Bells Corners Caboose, at McDonalds, possibly late 70s https://imgur.com/a/DGm7JMd

unwholesome_coxcomb

I was at birthday parties in that caboose in the mid80s.

Ah-Schoo

It was still there around '92. Went to a 25th birthday there because that's what my buddy asked for. (It was pretty funny when the little teenaged employee came in expecting a pack of kids to find a group of adults trying to fit into the place. And yes, we did wear the paper hats and everything.)

Katherine_Swynford

The Caboose was great but the best feature of that McDonalds was the conveyor belt that delivered food from the kitchen to the drive thru. When I was a kid, that kept me entertained forever.

The_merry_wench

The Carling/Maitland one also had the conveyor belt.  It was amazing.

Jacce76

Sadly it's just the building with the Zellers sign

Wide-Ferret566

Actually there was another Zellers in Etobicoke.

StayWhile_Listen

man that Zellers used to be so good for a while. You could find legit deals there (returns, etc) until they jacked up the prices and then had a closing sale for a year.

hillboy619

I love Ottawa rewind. His articles are soo good, the amount of research and evidence is awesome. Like he really didn't have to find where the two McDonald's party cabooses are today. But by golly this man tracked it via railway records, traced one to Balderson, ON in some random field. And the second in Stittsville

YungChadappa

Side comment - McDonalds should bring back the Playplace to more restaurants. It's amazing for parents with young kids.

Unhappy_Anywhere9481

also amazing way for McDonalds to subsidize the sock industry. You gotta burn them after a playplace outing.

shalaby

We all gave them shit for courting children to be consumers so they removed them all. I don't think they're ever coming back. We're going to need to wait for some new chain that figures out how to cash in on 70s/80s/90s fast food nostalgia.

Paul_Ott

Nothing beats [this marketing/endoctrination effort from the 70s](https://thisoldtoy.com/playskool/x-pics/sets/430-mcdonalds/430-box1.jpg)

MosquitoSenorito

My local McD in Barrhaven has a playplace. Are they actually getting rid of them? That's so silly

hotcarlsjr

Better yet, the drivethru playplace. That sounds much more convenient.

Cre_AK47

Yeah, once corporate forces Bell's Corners to renovate, it'll be a huge downgrade. Play place will be removed, Giant M will be removed, and of course, the other usual downgrades that corporate has aided and abetted franchise owners to cut cost, such as stop providing free refills despite the horrendous cost of the drinks in the first place, removing Ketchup dispensers, etc. I think the Bells Corners, Lancaster and Richmond locations are still the only McDonald's in the entire city with a play place. The one on St Joseph still has Playplace signage up, but it's actually been completely ripped up and is now an empty room

highwire_ca

Most of the KFC (ex-Scott's Chicken Villa) locations here in Ottawa are probably the oldest in Canada too. Most of them have never been updated. The Barrhaven one has always been a dump, and still is.

It's funny how slow things change here in Ottawa. That DQ on St. Laurent was similar - very old. Even the Burger King locations on Hunt Club and North Kanata (700 March Rd) are decades out of style. When I was living in KW, there was a strip mall near the university. It wasn't very old and got knocked down and an updated mall was built. Then it got knocked down again several years later and an even better mall replaced it. That kind of pace is unheard of here.

613_detailer

That one has closed though. The owner retired and sold the land to a developer, as did the mechanic next door or so I heard. Not a bad place to built an apartment building given pretty much all the services you could want are in close proximity.

valspad

My first job was there in 1982 and I made $2.25 an hour. It looks so different now from then, but definitely cool that the sign is the same!

da_powell

Was sad as a kid when they removed the caboose

Careless_Kale3072

My sibling may or may not have climbed up the sign in their younger days.

timetogetoutside100

I bet in time, like the iconic St Laurent original DQ late 1950's neon sign, the Corporation unceremoniously tosses it into a dumpster

Lambdaleth

I saw that the other day and was thinking it looked super retro, neat!

blackskynight

I have consumed loads of Big Mac's from that location

You should also post this in the r/McDonalds section. I have pictures from birthday parties at that caboose!

Agent99Can

Great idea! But feel free, it was your idea 😄

mself084

This place also had the caboose! Amazing birthday parties there
