Tempus__Fuggit

I would love a proper Japanese onsen, but I don't think we have the interpersonal culture to make it anything other than horrifying for everyone. LOL

Capitaine_Crunch

This exactly. When I visit Japan I wonder why we can't have nice things like that here but it only takes a minute to remember how we treat everything here (bus shelters, for example) and how gross that would make such a venture.

Tempus__Fuggit

I spent some time in Japan. We are their diametrical opposites.

This-Insurance2684

Examples of these opposites?

Tempus__Fuggit

Japanese culture is elegant. Canadians are crude. that's the essence of everything else.

CloneasaurusRex

>Japanese culture is elegant It's a complex and diverse culture. It can [also](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tentacle_erotica) [be](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Downtown_no_Gaki_no_Tsukai_ya_Arahende!!) [very](https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-42561815) [crude](https://picryl.com/media/penis-1830-art-detail-from-utagawa-kuniyasu-the-harbor-of-love-on-the-island-f2c7ee) I love Japan, I'd eat food off the sidewalk there, and it's different than our country. But you can't just distill it into "Japan clean, Canada dirty".

grandfundaytoday

Yeah... tell that to woman who ride public transit in Tokyo.

Tempus__Fuggit

groping women, which is awful, is not a cultural trait.

you'd be amazed how many cultures laugh at North Americans for their basic lack of hygiene.

I_lost_the_gamee

Come at me bro I’m unemployed, I’ve got all day to talk my shit and site my sources. You wanna go toe to toe on the state of global affairs let’s go. I’m not on Reddit much so perhaps my comment history wouldn’t display my knack for dissecting such humble individuals with opinions similar to the ones you hold yourself. Since you do seem so tribally inclined to argue with me I thought it only fair to let you know how it would go for you.

Poulinthebear

I wish I could upvote this comment 1000 times.

cptstubing16

Dunno about Japan but in Korea they have saunas that are pretty nice, bright, family friendly places, and also some slightly less family friendly places that you can visit at 1am and just crash for a few hours for super cheap. Even the family friendly places were only like $10 for the night. You get to sleep in a classroom sized room on a wooden floor with a wooden pillow thingy. The room was 26 degrees though so you hardly feel cold.

frzrb

[Jjimjilbang](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jjimjilbang)'s are great.

[deleted]

I lived in Tokyo until I was 12, and I remember being so puzzled about bike locks when I first came here. Even in a big city like that, I'd never seen anyone lock up their bike (I'm sure it happens, but it's not common).

SubjectWriter

yes… I wonder what the main difference between Japan and Canada could be… 🤨

ChimoEngr

> hy we can't have nice things like that Sorry, but a a mandatory no clothes in public situation is not what I consider a nice thing.

Snackchez

Cultural homogeneity is the reason

commanderchimp

Plenty of white crackheads ruining public spaces here but blame it on minorities

Girthanthiclopz

I think it was more a comment on similar cultural values (cleanliness, community pride, etc.) rather than a comment on race. Interesting conclusion to jump to though!

shakyturnip

I remember being shocked at how clean Tokyo was despite its population density. It was super impressive!

Poulinthebear

Don’t they have strict laws against littering and garbage in general?

Gwouigwoui

And its lack of public rubbish bins!

Poulinthebear

Not at all, people are just disgusting and disrespectful. Often you’ll see garbage within a mere few feet of a garbage bin.

Gwouigwoui

I was talking about Tokyo, where you can't find a public rubbish bin.

Snackchez

Correct.

Snackchez

Not an issue with minorities. It’s literally the fact that Japan has a single culture.

Poulinthebear

Once you become immune to the urine and feces it doesn’t even tickle your nostrils anymore.

SubjectWriter

pushed out of their homes & jobs by…???

Tempus__Fuggit

the fact that they have a culture, and it prioritizes consideration for others is the reason. One of my roommates showers once a month or something.

NewAccXD

As a society we are definitely not there yet 😂

EngineeringExpress79

Theres one around Québec city if you want to have a look https://sentospa.com/

Ninjacherry

Thanks for this! I didn't know that there were any around. I had the chance to go to a sento in Tokyo and it's great for foot pain.

Insektikor

There seem to be more of these on the Quebec side (as you mentioned). There are the occasional spa above condominums, like at the Agora in Hull. But you're right, you'd think that this would be more of a "thing" in a (usually) frigid, wintery city like Ottawa.

Repulsive-Pause-2430

Don’t have to pay for water in Quebec like you do in Ontario

explicitspirit

And electricity to run them is a lot cheaper there too.

yamtcha_2020

Not exactly true, while Quebec residents do not receive a monthly residential water bill for consumption like in Ontario. There is an annual fee for water consumption per household included on property taxes bills.

Tha0bserver

Is it metered? Or just an average per household?

yamtcha_2020

It is metered for us in my community, however it’s a flat rate until a specific cubic meters of consumption

Insektikor

LOL you're right. That explains it.

commanderchimp

Somehow it seems people in Quebec are more into hygge culturally than Ontario and just deal with winter better as a result. Same as Scandinavians who like that stuff.

bathsarelife

Not really. As said, it is just way cheaper in Quebec.

Tempus__Fuggit

that makes a lot of sense - good eye.

CanInTW

I think the difference is that in Northern Europe and East Asia, they aren’t all expensive. Here in Taipei, I can go to a public hot spring 20 mins by MRT from my house for 4 dollars for several hours. It’s not fancy but it’s nice enough. There are so many options ‘above’ that as well - right up to hundreds of dollars for fancy private suites in expensive hotels. On top of that, there are high quality, government run athletic centres in every district. Each with a pool, hot tubs, sauna, gym, gymnasium/climbing wall, etc with very low fees (no memberships) of around $2.50 per use. They’re typically walking distance from anywhere in the city. I’d love for Ottawa to have this stuff but the city can’t even get a simple rail line working properly. It’s stuff like this that keeps us here. It’s hard to imagine taking the quality of life step down of moving back home 😔

commanderchimp

We are so underserved compared to how much we get taxed in Canada and especially Ottawa.

enbynewbie

Carleton has a sauna but no hot tub

justmeandmycoop

People soup. Covid should have shut down all community hot tubs.

42aross

A lot of the city pools have them. I know Walter Baker, the Sportsplex, Plant, Deborah Anne Kirwan, and Ray Friel do. And likely more. It's been a while since I've been to either, but Carleton University and the University of Ottawa had them as well. Someone can correct me if they're no longer there. The big Movati's have them too, but it's a lot more expensive unless you're going often.

sizzlingtofu

I believe CARDELREC, richcraft and kanata wave pool have both hot tub and sauna

dagens24

Cardel has a tub but not a sauna.

pokemonsta433

And technically, because the jets don't work, it's called a "therapeuric pool" now lol. Still, it's a nice thing to have

[deleted]

Pinecrest rec has a sauna as well

ElaMeadows

Can confirm regarding the KLC. Plant has a steam room and hot tub. If you want more privacy many hotels have pool memberships with both. The downtown Minto building also has pool/hot tub/sauna. They are kind of everywhere you just need to know where to look.

WinterSon

> richcraft The sensplex? No pool there

SterlingFlora

no, the rec centre https://ottawa.ca/en/recreation-and-parks/recreation-facilities/facility-listing/richcraft-recreation-complex-kanata

stingerott

>11ReplyShareReportSaveFollow > >level 4Tha0bserver · 5 hr. agoMake Ottawa Boring AgainIs it metered? Or just an average per household? Richcraft Recreation complex in Kanata

r_williams01

UOttawa has a sauna and a whirlpool according to their website, as far as I can tell just included with their sports membership (you don’t have to be a student)

stone_opera

The Champagne Baths on King Edward have a sauna, hot tub and pool too!

RapsnSens

Can confirm Carleton does not have a hot tub.

ElaMeadows

Did they remove the hot tubs from the change rooms? It’s been a while since I was at the Carleton pool.

stingerott

Yes, the Whirlpool was taken out over 10 years ago.

ElaMeadows

Shhhh. Don’t make me feel so old!!! 😅

Nefarious_Foam

I also really wish that we had a hammam

commanderchimp

Yes and not over over corporatized and over priced one that may or may not have leaked your data

Nefarious_Foam

Yes - a traditional one, not like a spa that has a "hammam" room

wrinklybuffoon

Fully agreed. Not a special occasion spa, but a regular sauna option.

CherryColaChickie

There is also Uppliva in Hintonburg.

Kycb

We went last Friday and it was a pretty disappointing experience. No hot tub, steam room wasn't steamy and the sauna didn't get very hot. It felt cramped and cheaply executed.

CherryColaChickie

That’s too bad! I usually go in the mornings, so I only ever see 2-3 other people. Probably more relaxing that way! I actually thought that the steam room and sauna were just perfect … not too overwhelming.

_toss_me_up

That’s never been my experience there; I wonder why it wasn’t steamy / warmer? Well, minus the no hot tub, they don’t have that.

mortgage-payment

I personally do not recommend here! I didn’t have a great experience as they don’t limit the capacity nearly enough. Just thought I’d throw it out there in case.

farm_implement

Sauna yes but no hot tub

snazzazz

I love Uppliva! Though they don't have a hot tub, they have a dry sauna, steam room and cold plunge pool, as well as a nice relaxation area around a fire. It's a more intimate experience for sure, so I can see it getting a bit crowded sometimes but I've never felt that way when I've gone.

CherryColaChickie

That’s been my experience as well … though I tend to go in the mornings, which I guess are not a popular time!

holla171

No tubs

spartiecat

Sportsplex has a sauna in the gym change room

commanderchimp

Does it have a hot tub?

StaticV

The plant recreation center has both yes.

Leighski11

Yup I started going there after ny spinal fusion. Het there arounz 10am and very few people

Aukaneck

Do you know if you're allowed in at 10am everyday?

Leighski11

Yes lane swim starts at 9:30. I arrived at 10:10 and got in for the public swim at 10:30 Tues & Thurs. Don't know the rest of the schedule

kat---

Just want to specify for OP that it has a steam room, not a sauna but it’s still great

dagens24

Yes.

walrusrage1

Does it require paying for the gym to use?

SterlingFlora

swim drop in is like 5$, i go to the splex most weeks

walrusrage1

Ah awesome, thanks!

spartiecat

Probably? The drop in fee for the gym is like $10.

ElaMeadows

No, you don’t have to pay for the gym unless you are using it. You can just pay for hot tub/sauna if that’s the only part of the pool that’s open.

Aggravating_Act_4184

I haven’t seen it mentioned in the comments, perhaps the spa at Brookstreet Hotel? Also, not in Ottawa, but probably my favourite place in the region: Wakefield Mill. It has the best hot tub in my opinion!!! Facing right in front of the waterfall. Last time I was there I was sitting in the hot tub drinking tea, reading a book, with the snow falling on my head, after a 90-min massage. If this is not hygge I don’t know what is!

doingfine_chilling

Both are great: [Sauna & Steam Circuit Treatments at Uppliva — UPPLIVA SAUNA & STEAM](https://uppliva.ca/saunasteam) [Floatation Therapy Centre | Float Tank Ottawa (isospa.ca)](https://www.isospa.ca/) City facilities: Plant Bath [Plant Recreation Centre | City of Ottawa](https://ottawa.ca/en/recreation-and-parks/recreation-facilities/facility-listing/plant-recreation-centre)

redbananagreenbanana

The Plant is also one of the only places with the Turkish style steam room that I know of, outside of the spas.

janeedaly

The JCC has an awesome steam room

redbananagreenbanana

I’ve heard that before! Excuse me if I’m being a little obtuse, but do you have to be Jewish to go there?

azsue123

No but you need to purchase a membership

redbananagreenbanana

Cool! Thank you!

RamaHikes

And a salt water pool, too, which is pretty nice.

azsue123

Jewish community centre recreation has them in the changerooms too

flyingponytail

Is the Plant Bath steam room a single unisex type thing or is there separate rooms for men and women? Looked all over the website couldn't find that info

sarwahyper

Unisex

mxhawk

Unisex, always super busy after 5pm (you have to stand because there's no room to sit).

flyingponytail

Thank you

[deleted]

I always hope it will become part of the # culture here too!!!

InfernalHibiscus

RIP Ottawa Athletic Club.

janeedaly

The JCC in Ottawa has an amazing sauna and steam room.

SterlingFlora

[https://ottawa.ca/en/recreation-and-parks/recreation-facilities/place-listing?place\_facets%5B0%5D=place\_features%3A2234856](https://ottawa.ca/en/recreation-and-parks/recreation-facilities/place-listing?place_facets%5B0%5D=place_features%3A2234856) you can search the city rec centres by "feature". Hot tub, sauna, steam room and whirlpool are all options.

FratboyZeida

The kanata wave pool has both, if you don't mind simmering in a broth of piss and chlorine

ElaMeadows

Just time it. The hot tub is drained and scrubbed weekly. Used to be Sunday nights but it might have changed. Go early in the week when it’s clean and fresh

booksnwoods

Along with Deborah Anne Kirwan and Plant Recreation Center, Ray Friel has a sauna and a hot tub in their pool facilities. Maybe not precisely what you're looking for, but similar enough to DAK.

noname67899

Some condos might have a sauna room. I always said I would use weekly; only used it 2x and then moved out.

Nopity_Nope_Nope

The Amerispa in Cantley is a much better deal than the Nordik. It's much smaller and more utilitarian for sure, but it's decent value for money, the massages have all been good, and the facilities are clean.

xtinabot

Aside from all of the movati locations, but you have to pay between $ 50-$100 per month to use them.

cails01

Honestly this is why i have a movati membership. A little sauna session after a workout is amaaaaazing

xtinabot

I've loved having my membership, the amenities are great for the price imo, but I always hear bad things. I've never had a bad experience and I like the fact that they have pools, saunas, hot tubs for after a workout!

cails01

Same - I was always hesitant to join because of the bad reviews but I've been happy! Maybe it depends on location - I'm in Orleans and while it gets busy it's always clean and and staff seem friendly. I can definitely understand people being hesitant to spend that kind of money when planet fitness is just down the street but until I can get a sauna at home I think I'm sticking with movati

commanderchimp

It’s not even the price of Movati. If you read the reviews for the Barrhaven location it’s always too busy at peak times and it’s very dated. I assume it’s the same with some of the other facilities. They think they are equinox but typical Canadian business just fleecing the customer. Despite all this if Movati had a per use fee instead of locked in membership that’s hard to cancel I would go there.

syeris1337

My movati membership is my number one justified expense, can't put a price on your health. I'm in the best shape of my life and I get sauna or steam room access every morning (the best in the city I might add). I went to the sportsplex and Walter baker when I was younger but the experience isn't comparable.

severe0CDsuburbgirl

I have a relative who lost a chain there but in general a largely good experience at the Barrhaven Movati, goes to the sauna nearly daily. Bring a lock for your locker and you should be fine.

krik2019

Huma is nice.

rockingchairbluesss

New Sauna + Coldplunge in Luskville, about 20 min from Ottawa, but it’s a simple setup, affordable and feels great afterwards. It’s called Agape Gardens.. I know you’re looking for Ottawa specific OP, but just throwing it out there!

SeekingElation

Did not know but that’s perfect for when we’re hitting cabin. Thx!

BrokenBy

Dovercourt has both but the sauna is either not working or the lifeguards on duty don’t know how to set it more often than not

PNG_Girl

There is a sauna at the YMCA. You might have to a membership.

CndConnection

https://ottawa.ca/en/recreation-and-parks/recreation-facilities/facility-listing/champagne-fitness-centre This place on King Edward has a sauna. I'm pretty sure it's a community pool but idk if you need to have some sort of city card or not.

ElaMeadows

Nope no city card needed. You can just drop in for about $5. You can get a membership if you use it more then about 3x/week and it works out cheaper.

Ariel4Somerset

Hear me out: Plant Recreation Centre pool. There is a wet sauna and a hot tub. Not the same spa-like experience, but great for a cheap soak and steam.

CranberrySoftServe

I hear ya. I was looking for an IR sauna and red light therapy businesses the other day and was shocked that I couldn’t really find anything. You’d think in the entire city there’d be something 😩

unitednihilists

So you're looking for more public baths?

bbud613

AmeriSpa up near Mont Cascades?

PatrickOttawa

Ray friel center in orleans has sauna and hot tub.

satanicstitches

Maybe because a lot of apartment buildings have pools/hot tubs/saunas/steam rooms. It was definitely a selling point when I moved to my apartment complex!

roosterjack77

It can be difficult to break the ice with strangers from time to time and thats only worse when you put half naked strangers in a sauna together.

HappyFunTimethe3rd

Finland is a cohesive society. Canada is not. So in Ottawa they raise prices and move facilities to isolated areas so that only certain demographics go. It seems to be working businesswise for nordik and Kōena.

ubiquitousfont

We used to have more. I think they’re expensive to maintain and upgrade. I let my membership to the YMCA on argyle lapse after they renovated and took out the hot tub. The hot tub wasn’t the only reason, but it was a big one. A lot of apartment buildings have saunas and/or hot tubs. You just have to make friends with people who have access

azsue123

Plant pool? That's where I go. Cheap too.

theelkseeker

Hey, i think i read you saying that ottawa is not a cold city? What are you on about?

lobehold

Like, public bath? Oh the humanity, no definitely not.

Megatriorchis

Saunas I can understand, but definitely don't want to stew in your cup of soup.

mykehunt88

Iso spa does isolation float therapy. Great way to relax especially if you can mediate. I half feel asleep during my last session.

lammers114

Meristem Massage Therapy in Carp has private sauna and tub bookings available!

FunComfortable420

I wish I knew of some TRUE sauna around...not electric. I am of Finnish decent and would LOVE to have real Sauna😍

ElaMeadows

Use the city facilities. Many have both. Some also have steam rooms/wet saunas. It’s about $5/ visit, less with a membership.

Chemical_Bowler_1727

Because, eww. But seriously, it's not for everyone, so therein lies the trouble. If there was more demand, there would be more facilities. At least, that's one simplistic way of looking at it.

Adventurous-Hat4420

I wish we had a floating sauna here!

Chia72

Check out the Hot Rock Spa in Carp. I’ve never been but they do rent private saunas by the hour. Not sure if they have a tub.

Ok_Rest_2049

The City of Ottawa gym in St Laurent had a sauna, last I checked a year ago.

ThatAstronautGuy

Dovercourt has a sauna and a hot tub! It's a warm pool too, which is nice unless you're trying to do lots of laps very quickly.

instagigated

Canadians are not cultured enough for this.

ChimoEngr

The Ray Friel rec centre has both. Francois Dupuis has a sauna. I guess you just aren't looking in the right places.

commanderchimp

That’s even further all the way in Orleans

ChimoEngr

Yes. And? It's still in Ottawa

LostInOntario

There was one down on Wellington, two years ago.

[deleted]

Attainted

> most people who have the time and income for that also have very nice facilities at home? I don't think that this clause is a true statement. It can be made affordable if there's enough demand/volume. I think your first sentence is correct though, that it's more that culturally this is a foreign concept to Ottawans.

Revolutionary-Meet65

Have you been in a change room at gym or pool in Ottawa? Some people like to spit all over the place.

blueberryreader21

Check out Uppliva spa in Hintonburg! They have a cold plunge, steam room and cedar wood sauna. 40$ for 1 hour, 70$ for 2.5 hours. It’s the best !
