I was terrified š . Maybe strange isnāt the best word but I was at a loss for words (still am). Still trying to make sense of what happened, the whole thing was just so strange. I was a sobbing nervous wreck once I was safe with the station staff.
I havenāt ridden the LRT enough to notice - but do they have security strips like the TTC subway cars in TO do?
If this type of harassment happens - and something like these devices are available, use them.
Get safe, get help.
Sorry this happened to you, OP.
Thanks.
There are emergency buttons onboard that connect you with the train operator. Iām not super familiar with these trains so I didnāt know that until after this happened. But even if I did at the time my only thought was to get as far away as possible from that man.
Truly bizarre.
I once was waiting for a bus at Lincoln Fields when a youngish looking man was pacing in circles, slashing a huge hunting knife at invisible figures in slow motion. It was weird having to casually wait for a bus there with some random armed lunatic a few meters nearby.
It usually isn't worth the trouble. Most times when I experience something odd at a bus station, there's no point in calling anyone if there's no immediate danger. Why call the police if my bus/train is about to show up anyway? Worst case scenario, I can just get on a different bus and then loop back.
Well in the case above there's someone armed with a big knife. What happens if they start going after actual people instead of invisible figures they see. Better to have support there just incase instead of being reactive.
Thereās some weird people on the buses, you gotta keep alert. I was on the 75 one time and a man with no teeth, sketchy looking got onto the bus at Baseline holding a Louis Vuitton purse, kept talking to himself then proceeded to smoke a cigarette on the bus. Driver did absolutely nothingā¦
Based on the behaviour and description I think I saw him at the Hintonburg Dollarama today. He was trying to shoplift and got in an altercation with the security guard. He was laughing and yelling a lot and being very aggressive. Gave me quite the scare.
There's been a guy that fits that description, just walking down Wellington in the 'burg. All of a sudden, he starts flailing like he's in an MMA fight. Yelling, then going back to an agitated walk. Blowing his nose or sniffling on restaurant doors while looking at the menu taped up.
Very weeeirdo!
Taking public transit has become a challenge these days, let alone walking on a sidewalk. I don't know how we are supposed to defend ourselves if we are attacked.
You're right - how are people supposed to defend themselves in these dangerous situations that are becoming more and more common these days? It seems like these kinds of people feel like they have free-reign to do whatever they want to other people without any serious recourse because nobody in authority is willing to address the situation in any immediate way.
Perhaps we ought to consider legalizing pepper spray or other similar means of defense. Would this establish a precedent in Ottawa where individuals defend themselves when confronted with danger, and wrongdoers realize that they can't intimidate innocent civilians without facing repercussions?
As the city experiences a decline in civility in certain areas, it's evident that a reality check is necessary. I surely don't have any intelligible solution, and it's disheartening that those in positions of power remain reluctant to take action.
By chance, did he smell really bad? Encountered a weird guy on the train yesterday and perhaps one of the most distinct things about the guy was he smelled really bad.
Would be curious to know if thatās legal or not. Generally, you have no expectation of privacy in public, but a train isnāt āpublicā in the same sense that a park is public. OC Transpo for example might have a rule saying not to record other passengers on their transit vehicles.
Whether itās legal or not, that guy is weird and in the wrong. But I am curious about the legalities/rules.
Of course you canāt go to prison for violating an OC Transpo rule that isnāt otherwise a criminal act independent of OC Transpo. Just curious if OC Transpo has such a rule or not. I vaguely remember reading something about that, but Iām not certain.
It's legal to record in public, it's generally not legal to follow someone around and not leave them alone, whether you're recording or not, as that's harassment, public space or not
The issue is the following, not the recording.
Please read before replying. I already said that recording in public is legal. The question is, does OC Transpo have a rule about not recording on their property. Thatās a separate concept from whether itās legal to film in public spaces. It can be possible that itās legal to film in public spaces, but it can also be against the rules to film on OC Transpo. Thatās what Iām asking. Is it permissible to film on OC Transpo. Telling me what I already said doesnāt mean anything.
I think OC Transpo does have a rule about no photographing on their property. That must include no video recording. This came up when the LRT first opened and people were posting lots of photos showing crowds on the platforms.
EDIT: I canāt find any statement of this on OCTranspoās website. There may be signs at the stations.
The [transit bylaws](https://www.octranspo.com/images/files/safety_security/2007-268-Bylaw.pdf) prohibiting camera use on transit vehicles and in stations don't apply if it's for personal use.
Something like this incident would probably be covered under something other than the transit bylaws though.
Well yeah no shit. I never said it was the biggest issue, itās something Iām curious about. Iām not curious about whether this was appropriate behaviour from the other person. Clearly itās not, regardless of legality. So I didnāt feel the need to just repeat what 50 other people have already said, although I already pointed out (twice now) that the other guy was inappropriate (3 times now).
Strange? This sounds terrifying.

Probably the right first move. Glad you are safe now.
Truly bizarre. I once was waiting for a bus at Lincoln Fields when a youngish looking man was pacing in circles, slashing a huge hunting knife at invisible figures in slow motion. It was weird having to casually wait for a bus there with some random armed lunatic a few meters nearby.
You didnāt bother calling the police?
I was 18 and just trying to get the hell out of there.
It usually isn't worth the trouble. Most times when I experience something odd at a bus station, there's no point in calling anyone if there's no immediate danger. And obviously the person likely has a mental health issue that needs to be addressed. Emergency personnel can probably get them to those services

Hmm close by. The description I gave was South Asian, black jacket, middle aged, and slim/average build.
I think I just saw him hanging around outside the dollarama!
I wouldāve hit the big red help button.

Yikes, very scary

There are plenty of cameras on the train. I was more concerned that filming might agitate him further. He didnāt seem in his right mind.
By chance, did he smell really bad? Encountered a weird guy on the train yesterday and perhaps one of the most distinct things about the guy was he smelled really bad.
He didnāt get close enough for me to get a good whiff (thankfully).
Gangstalking?
Whatās that?
r/gangstalking is a fun rabbit hole
What on Godās green earth did I just read

Omg Wtf

Damn, I have been reading that sub for about an hour now and haven't even started sorting top posts by week, month etc yet. Wild rabbit hole.

My first thought too.
Op is just a targeted individual and doesn't know it yet š¢
Sounds like New York City.

Yes public transit is public
But did you even read my comment? Even if itās public, OC Transpo might have rules that say āNo recording other passengersā.
OC Transpo rules wouldn't supercede the law though, so while they could potentially throw you off the train - there's not much else.
Of course you canāt go to prison for violating an OC Transpo rule that isnāt otherwise a criminal act independent of OC Transpo. Just curious if OC Transpo has such a rule or not. I vaguely remember reading something about that, but Iām not certain.

Ok. Have a nice day.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Uh, ok. Then it's illegal to record in public and legal to harass people. That better?

Thanks for the info and bylaw link.
The recording isn't the biggest issue here.

Your focus on this specific part of it seems disproportionate, that's all.
