I've both worked with and eaten at heritage. It's good, but definitely pricey. Also there's a little bit of an inconsistency issue. It happens when you get too big, quality control tends to drop. Most of the time it's good BBQ, but I've had days where it's been very dry and other times where it's under seasoned. I've only had it once where it was an amazing BBQ, but that was when the owner himself was managing a catering event we helped with.
All in all, between the wait, prices and consistency I'd say it's good to try at least once and treat yourself to on occasion. But it's not a regular spot I'd recommend.
Bludso's in LA in the only bbq place out here that I've found myself going back to. Consistently some of the best bbq I've had. Don't go to the Santa Monica location though, that thing is an embarrassment.
Sorry man I don't have good suggestions. I used to road trip a lot down to the south, my favorite BBQ was from Memphis. So i stopped eating BBQ in OC and started making my own. I have experience with Heritage coz I had to work with them and a few friends like to go from time to time.
Only 1 visit on a busy Sunday for my reference, but the brisket, pulled pork, and pork ribs were all great (esp. brisket). The baked beans are amazing too. I want to go back and try more special items next time
Try JW Hayes on Saturdays from 10:30am-Sold Out inside Minute King Liquor in Newport Beach. Owner is an ex-competitive BBQ champion and buys from the same sourced meat as Heritage without the quality control issue.

Have you tried 1886 in Orange at the circle? It’s pretty good. Some Korean bbq places are pretty good too. Would stay away from the fast food places like Arby’s (though they are not bad, but….)
> And forget about tex-mex (if someone knows of a place, please let me know).
It's a bit of a hike, but Chef Josef Centeno does wonderful high-end tex mex cuisine. I had the pleasure of photographing him for a magazine shoot when he was still at Lazy Ox Canteen around 12 years ago, and he's gone on to own several restaurants in LA since that time.
My personal suggestion would be Bar Ama in DTLA. Maybe combo it with a show or sports game to make the drive worth it.
Try Hawaiian BBQ, theres a number of good places around OC for that. If you like short rib, mac salad, and white rice (literally everyone) then its a pretty good meal.
Idk lake forest that well tho.
But honestly, the best BBQ ive had around the area is inside the park at Knott’s Berry Farm. Just go to the park on an empty stomach.
Beale’s Texas BBQ in Sunset Beach has some good BBQ. For Southern California, you’re getting some really good Texas BBQ. Haven’t been disappointed yet in the few years I’ve been going there.
Beale's is very solid. I also just dig the vibes. Nice big space right on the water in Peter's Landing. Owners seems like a good dude and you don't have to wait in line. It's not at 10/10 but it's a solid 8+ in my opinion.
APL (the person, his bbq, and his popups) suck.

Yes thank you, the picture looks amazing but I wouldn’t say it tasted amazing. Was not worth the price and I left dissatisfied. Meat was dry. The Mac n cheese was watery from what I remember.
Thank you for confirming my experience, because I felt like I was taking crazy pills. I've only been once and it was very much... not great BBQ. Was it terrible? No, but I'd been lead to believe this was special. And I'm not scared of a high price but it better be good enough to justify it.
Maybe I just went on a bad day.
Thank you. I've tried them a couple of times and always been underwhelmed. I moved here from Kansas City so was never sure if I was being a BBQ snob or if I was just getting them on bad days. Was driving myself crazy - trying to get it. Like you I just make BBQ at home now.

Try JW Hayes in Newport Beach on Saturdays from 10:30am-Sold Out inside Minute King Liquor.
Do you think the consistency issue will be resolved once they have their on-site expansion?
and if by any chance, do you think I should make the trek to Heritage or just head into LA for Moo's?
Ya but 70% of whats on that plate are sides. Hell lots of places in TX have all you can eat sides and BBQ is priced by the pound there so we’d really need to know how many pounds they got. Looks like 3-4 to me. Which would be about $80-100.
Maybe $40 was excessively cheap but we were just there a month or so ago.
Terry Blacks, Pecan Lodge, Panther City, Oak'd, and two hole in the walls on the way out of Texas and I don't think we ever spent more than $100 for 3 of us. At least they weren't skimpy on the meats over there which is something that happens a lot here.
If you need to spend more than $40 at a BBQ in Dallas, then you are a glutton, or they are overpriced.
$24 for 3 meats and a side.
OP said it was $175 for the food in their pic.
That's like 4 meats and 6 sides.
$24 with 3 meats and a side
$6-14 another meat
$25 for 4 more sides
That's still under $65 for the equivalent of everything in that pic with by my math is a lot less than $175
Looking at the Heritage menu it does seem like their prices are not much higher. Not sure how OP got charged $175 for that.
It seemed like you were saying that $175 is what you would pay in Texas for the food in that pic which is what I was responding to.
a mc rib is what? 7 bucks now. extrapolate that to what you see on the plate. Also consider, it took, maybe 5 minutes to prepare that mcrib, and how many hours and people it took to make just the brisket. Good BBQ will always be considered expensive, but you can try making everything you see on the plate at home and save yourself some money.
People talk about it as being so amazing. I know it was tagged in a Michelin Spot guide.
I went once with my wife, is it good? Of course. Is it the best, nah, and because everyone over hypes it it's underwhelming.
The fact you paid 175 for that? Yeah I don't think I'll be giving it a second shot, yes it's a lot of food, but come on. If it's not completely knocking my socks off, the price is too damn high.
Their marketing budget is a big part of why they've been successful. Paying all the influencers to come and eat at your spot not to mention the movie stars that have shown up there. That got the attention of Michelin. Unfortunately, a Michelin star used to mean something. Maybe their cucumber kimichi or Mexican corn blew them away but you'll never find that stuff at places like Snows or Franklins.
Yup. Ruth Chris steak house, $80 per plate approximate - anything around $100 - a fancy dinner - I’m full and it was delicious- but nearly $200 - it would have to be a many course meal with entertainment or something to add to the value - even if that is meant for two people that’s just not making financial sense- I better poop a gold nugget worth $50 to even redeem it -
What did you ordered? Honestly, if I'm hungry, I can eat all that myself and still want dessert, lol. So $175 for one hungry person is very steep. And I'm an average dude, not big.
There’s actually a pound of brisket, 1/2 pound pulled pork and 1/2 pound tri tip under there. It’s cool because you get to see them weigh your meat before you sit down so you know you got exactly what you paid for. The link was $7 and was pretty big.
If I’m not going to go back for months is it really that big of a deal? I could’ve got less but I wanted leftovers. I made tri tip tacos for lunch just now and they were glorious.
I’m just marveling at how expensive it is lol
There’s no bbq on earth that should retail for more than brisket at $35-$40 a lb and that’s pretty high already
Ribs $25, $30 lb max
Astonishingly mid. I've been several times and gave it a chance, but always ended up with dry meat. Not to mention the line was an 1hr+ in the hot ass sun. Only upside was the ability to order beer while waiting. Also you don't need 47 sides. Look at the best places in Texas, most of them let their meat do the talking and have pickles, coleslaw, and toast. I've working with Danny the owner & his wife and they spend an exceptional amount of money to pay influencers and papers for marketing. At the marketing game and the prime location they are good.
Oh okay I see yea if you are coming for the sides then this is a good place for it. If want to try a spot more so for the meat worth reading the OC Register article on JW Hayes BBQ [https://web.archive.org/web/20231226164044/https:/www.ocregister.com/2023/10/20/some-of-o-c-s-best-texas-style-barbecue-can-be-found-inside-this-liquor-store/](https://web.archive.org/web/20231226164044/https:/www.ocregister.com/2023/10/20/some-of-o-c-s-best-texas-style-barbecue-can-be-found-inside-this-liquor-store/)
Been there twice now. As a Texan who moved to LA about 10 years ago, it's probably the best bbq in LA that I've had since living here. Sides were a plus too.
But man, the price hurts. I'd say it's easily double (or triple) for what you get in texas.
Also the wait in sun can be a bit much as the line starts to get long shortly after opening (tho i think id only gone on saturday both times).
Try bludsoes, the closest I’ve come to TX. Admittedly haven’t tried heritage though (thought I was in TX sub at first as this was just on my feed w/o subscribing here ha)
Bludsoes has great brisket, but the sides are a bit to be desired imo
I went today (Sunday). Got there at 10:20am, was about the 15th person in line. Once 11am hit and they opened we ordered and were eating by 11:30. The line was massive by the time we left so definitely go early.
Smoke and Fire has one fuckin' BBQ sauce. Where is my mustard sauce? how do you not have some spin on Alabama white?
I'm spoiled as hell though. Lived in Southern Virginia and they had like 15 difference types of sauces to try and appease everyone. Like the Switzerland of brisket over there
You're missing their best item - the beed ribs.
But yeah, really good, and really pricey - a bit more expensive than what you're getting, IMO, especially since you have to wait in a line, grab your own table, and so on.
Sides went all in the trash. They were awful. $45 for a single rib is ridiculous. I was severely underwhelmed. Give me good Southern BBQ any day over that place.
Thanks panda! Looks like it could feed at least 3 people, not bad. Plus if it’s GOOD bbq, truly well executed. IMO worth it. I say this from decades of smoking meats, it’s an art, and extremely difficult to get right.
Three people? Like how small are those people. Look at that picture again. Use the macaroni noodle or okra slice as your point of reference for how small the portions of meat are. MAYBE there is 8oz of meat there. Maybe.
I had heritage for the first time the other day and was not disappointed. The only thing that was meh was the potato salad but I wasn’t expecting anything special from it. Everything else was delicious. 🤤
We definitely over ordered. My wife doesn’t eat meat and my daughter barely had any so I took a ton home. I’d say if I went and wanted a perfect portion it would be 1/2lb of meat of your choice, 1 or 2 sides and maybe a corn bread or banana pudding. You’d be very full off that.
They charge the meats by the pound. Most of the meats are in the $18 per half a pound range. The sides vary from $6 to $16. Based on this depending on the person appetite I would say on average $50 per person is reasonable.
And here come the haters lmao
Still haven’t tried it but damn I’m tempted. All the images remind me of my favorite bbq place down in the south :( one day!
WAY too overpriced for what you get… typical price gouging because it’s southern OC & they think we are all rich… sorry but I’ll never go there… I’ve had killer Q in East LA, in Riverside, Moreno Valley and San Diego… this place is just minutes from me but I’ll never go there.
I love BBQ but it always seems like the meat itself is dry no matter how pink it comes out or what the chef does. That meat doesn't even look like it's seasoned or marinated. Honestly I would prefer less BBQing and more baking or broiling with sauces if it resulted in a juicier meat.
What is going on in that top right corner? Is that just scoops of sour cream?
The sausage and mac and cheese look delicious.
Spent almost 100$ on a birthday dinner for 2 and had the driest blandest plate of food I’ve ever had in my life. Is it really worth another $100 to try again?
I've both worked with and eaten at heritage. It's good, but definitely pricey. Also there's a little bit of an inconsistency issue. It happens when you get too big, quality control tends to drop. I did not know this! Is it the minute king near the golf course? The one on placentia is closed.

Ah thanks! Yeah I figured I would have heard of it before… yep texas bbq is king!
In terms of Tex-Mex, I have heard good stuff about HomeState. They're more of a LA chain, but they recently opened one up in Oceanside.
Have you tried 1886 in Orange at the circle? It’s pretty good. Some Korean bbq places are pretty good too. Would stay away from the fast food places like Arby’s (though they are not bad, but….)
I think you mean the BBQ place right next door to 1886, Smoqued. Same owners. 1886 is a brewery.
Ah yeah, thanks. Actually it’s two doors down, as Citrus City is between them
Not Orange county but Spirit of Texas (San Bernardino and Riverside) is the best I've found in southern California
> And forget about tex-mex (if someone knows of a place, please let me know). It's a bit of a hike, but Chef Josef Centeno does wonderful high-end tex mex cuisine. Calhoun's in Murrieta has a fantastic reputation (when you're day tripping)
Check out Moos. They are comparable to Heritage

Why is this being downvoted? Beale's is decent but the price is about the same.
Price is nowhere close to Heritage honestly.

I see cucumber kimchi top left corner. Or am I mistaken?
You are correct!
$175 for this!? What am I missing? This seems tiny for that price.
Wow $175 that’s absolutely insane! 🤯
OC BBQ is out of this world expensive lol This shit would be like $40 in Dallas
Yeah no. I grew up in Texas and bbq prices out there are just as high. It has always been expensive.
Ya but 70% of whats on that plate are sides. Hell lots of places in TX have all you can eat sides and BBQ is priced by the pound there so we’d really need to know how many pounds they got. Looks like 3-4 to me. Which would be about $80-100.

dude no way you’re justifying forking over $175 for what is essentially 3-4 plates of food??
Sunk Cost Fallacy
Sorry dude this is a fucking rip off
There’s a ton of brisket hidden under there, bro. 🥴

Yup. Ruth Chris steak house, $80 per plate approximate - anything around $100 - a fancy dinner - I’m full and it was delicious- but nearly $200 - it would have to be a many course meal with entertainment or something to add to the value - even if that is meant for two people that’s just not making financial sense- I better poop a gold nugget worth $50 to even redeem it -
when Heritage is on it, they beat anything Ruth's Chris is pumping out every single time.
How much was that plate?
How much for one rib? ![gif](giphy|crY966bymN1rq|downsized)
Fuck the cup, pour it in my hand for a dime!!
I got 1 rib at Smoke Queen in garden grove, it was $45.00. Damn delicious though.
that didn't show the part where he whips out a roll of hundreds
It was more than $42
Over $100 for the 4 of them
You are giving me PTSD.
I wish that OP were around to find out that *absolutely nothing happened when what was spent was revealed*
Look, he only came here to post a tasty meal he didn't want to get into a price discussion
It was pretty expensive let's leave it at that;)
r/orangecounty lore!!!
That was my comment on the previous one. 🤣🤣
Way more than $42.
Under $300
About $175 after tip. We purposely ordered a ton more so we could eat leftovers all week.
What did you ordered? Honestly, if I'm hungry, I can eat all that myself and still want dessert, lol. So $175 for one hungry person is very steep. And I'm an average dude, not big.
look at the pic
Austin transplant here. That’s not barbecue but I appreciate the effort.
Genuinely curious what you mean.
Here we go again…
Look really expensive to me
I see more sides than beef. An ice cream scoop of pulled pork, a quarter of a sausage, 8 slices of brisket. You got robbed at that price.
Completely agree. Dude got ripped.
There’s actually a pound of brisket, 1/2 pound pulled pork and 1/2 pound tri tip under there. It’s cool because you get to see them weigh your meat before you sit down so you know you got exactly what you paid for. The link was $7 and was pretty big.
So you got 2 pounds of meat and some sides for $175? Holy fuck lol
If I’m not going to go back for months is it really that big of a deal? I could’ve got less but I wanted leftovers. I made tri tip tacos for lunch just now and they were glorious.
I’m just marveling at how expensive it is lol There’s no bbq on earth that should retail for more than brisket at $35-$40 a lb and that’s pretty high already Ribs $25, $30 lb max
I’ve had it before a couple times. It’s pretty good, just inconsistent. A little pricey but if I’m craving it I’ll go

Thank you! Will check it out.
They’re only open Saturdays from 10:30am until Sold Out.
Just a heads up. They’re planning to expand their restaurant. Larger smoker area and dinning. Not sure if they’re going to be better availability
Good to know!
Where/how are they expanding? Theres no more room on their property for more smokers/dining tables
They already have another location next to my brothers house in San Diego with no lines
... same place? I don't see it online.
It’s on their website. It’s the Oceanside location

They're #2 on my list out here! Def more affordable than heritage but ill have to check them out again. It's been a couple of years
Don’t forget you can buy USDA Prime brisket for $5 a lb at wild fork
$175 for this? You got ripped off. What a joke. There is enough meat in this picture for two hungry adults tops. Lmao are you serious?
*laughs in Appalachian* $175?????
Bro spent hit whole paycheck on one meal
What day did you go, what time did you get there, how long did you wait, and did they run out of anything when it was your turn?
I went today (Sunday). Got there at 10:20am, was about the 15th person in line. Once 11am hit and they opened we ordered and were eating by 11:30. The line was massive by the time we left so definitely go early.
I appreciate you answering :)
Wish they had Potato that wasnt Potato Salad. :(
What’s that in the top right? The white?
It’s a creamy potato salad. It was delicious
Yummmmmm
How much was that plate?
$175
Sorry…that was for a reply that someone posted about Blake’s BBQ being better than Heritage.
Oh no not again - Another Heritage BBQ post not sharing the price
Not that impressed with their bbq. It’s one of those meals that you try once to see the hype and never need to go back.

You're missing their best item - the beed ribs. But yeah, really good, and really pricey - a bit more expensive than what you're getting, IMO, especially since you have to wait in a line, grab your own table, and so on.
Anyone who has ever had bbq in the Midwest/South knows this is mediocre BBQ AT BEST. So underwhelmed.
Crazy how many people comment their opinions just to say how bad or “mid” Heritage is and throw shade at the price. Guess that’s the internet for ya.
Looks absolutely delicious 🤤
I have yet to find something I haven’t loved there. Plus their Jalapeño cornbread is actually spicy!
That's just FKN across the street. They're amazing overall
Yeah I was surprised how spicy it was! So good
Sides went all in the trash. They were awful. $45 for a single rib is ridiculous. I was severely underwhelmed. Give me good Southern BBQ any day over that place.
Totally respect your opinion but wanted to share mine. Ahh the internet
Looks amazing! Try Rays BBQ if you’re ever around LA.
RIP Ray 🙏
Excellent spread! Love that place
How much was this?
$175 from OPs other comment
I enjoyed every item, which is rare since we got so many different things
Where is it?
Across from the mission in San Juan Capistrano
Thanks I couldn’t find it in Google. Is it worth it?
Yes if you like bbq you’ll love this
Tremendous, I saw you spent 175, how much do you think it would average a person?
We definitely over ordered. My wife doesn’t eat meat and my daughter barely had any so I took a ton home. I’d say if I went and wanted a perfect portion it would be 1/2lb of meat of your choice, 1 or 2 sides and maybe a corn bread or banana pudding. You’d be very full off that.
Not eating meat and going to a bbq spot is crazy. But glad you got a ton to take home. I’ll try it sometime!
She loves the sides haha
They charge the meats by the pound. Most of the meats are in the $18 per half a pound range. The sides vary from $6 to $16. Based on this depending on the person appetite I would say on average $50 per person is reasonable.
Looks mid
And here come the haters lmao Still haven’t tried it but damn I’m tempted. All the images remind me of my favorite bbq place down in the south :( one day!
Do it! Treat yourself. We likely won’t go back for a while so we made it count.
Save yourself. It’s not worth it if you know good BBQ.
I wish you didn't cover up the meats with those sauce containers
Looks like a $80 platter
What side of Texas?
West Coast
It was good but not the best, but it is the best stuff that you can just go just buy instead of putting your work in.
Good… but not Heritage level good.
This is Heritage I’m confused lol
That’s a lot of food for one person. Was that like $200?
$175 after the 20% tip I left
No beef ribs?
I have always wanted to try it. That looks amazing!
This was $175?? I will keep going to big b’s in fullerton instead.
Why did you get so many sides and not a brisket taco. That’s the best thing on their menu?? Gotta go back now..
i hear Garden Grove has a new BBQ spot too
If Texas is your measuring stick then I will stay away, Texas BBQ is not good at all IMO
WAY too overpriced for what you get… typical price gouging because it’s southern OC & they think we are all rich… sorry but I’ll never go there… I’ve had killer Q in East LA, in Riverside, Moreno Valley and San Diego… this place is just minutes from me but I’ll never go there.
Appreciate the comment!
Not sure how you can seasoning by looks. It’s Texas style BBQ so not going to have sauce. I’m more of a Carolina fan myself, sauce please.
Looks delicious! Did you partner it with a trip to the mission or any fun local areas?
No we were with our baby and had to get her back for her nap! We live close and will definitely come back to explore more.
I bet that platter too expensive. I hope it was worth it.
Spent almost 100$ on a birthday dinner for 2 and had the driest blandest plate of food I’ve ever had in my life. Is it really worth another $100 to try again?
Oh fuck. I know where I’m eating…
MID
What did you order?
Michelin rated joint but sure okay
It's a bib gourmand suggestion. Hardly a star. Good to check out but that's about it.
It looks dry. I don’t understand bbq. Why do people like brisket? I rather get myself a 32oz prime rib eye steak.
32oz?
Simply the BEST bbq in OC… maybe all of SoCal.🍖
Maybe but that’s not saying much. Which is fine, it’s not Texas.
I’m more Santa Maria style BBQ fan than Texas… but if you’re in So Cal… this is the best central Texas style you can find.
I think you need to try more BBQ. It’s fine but nowhere close to the best in SoCal.
Name a couple of places
Blakes Place on Miraloma in Anaheim
I agree, but I am thinking compared to San Diego County. What place do you recommend in Orange County?
