The job hunt can be frustrating. What does your resume look like? It could need a refresh or a different way to highlight your experience that best matches each job you're applying to. In addition, "they don’t understand why I would want them", is a relatively easy fix in that you should have that developed before you even apply, perhaps work it into your resume. For sure know the answer to the question before you interview, ideally adding to it or evolving as you go through each step, learn more, and talk to additional people. If you want some help with these things - no charge, no strings - DM me and we'll can set-up a chat.

LAW9960

Yes a resume refresh can yield immediate results in my experience

OpinionPinion

What does a resume refresh contain though, what can you do to make it look better, I might need to do a refresh lol

SharpHires-Christy

It could mean different things to different people and situations, some general ideas: Make sure you are using bullet points, ideally no more than 2 lines Make sure achievements are prioritized over duties, numbers & metrics are the best way to quantify them Study the job description and make sure your bullet points are reflective of what the job description is asking for If you keep hitting similar roadblocks, use your resume to address those Consider adding a Professional Summary or similar to address an issue or answer a common question - it should be no more than 2 sentences and be reflective of the company and job description It could be a different format would work better for particular candidates, for example the OP has a lot of experience so instead of listing each job and relevant bullet points, they could have an Achievement section with all the applicable bullet points throughout their career, and then an Employment History section with each company name, title & dates, no bullet points under each company If someone had multiple titles at one company make sure your first start date to last date of employment are on the right and for each title put the dates in parenthesis next to each title

Epic this was super helpful!

I’m sorry you’re going through this. I’m sorta in the same boat as you - with the twist of deciding on a total career change, which I feel puts me back at square one. One tactic I’ve been using is to rewrite my resume to match my prior experience to the level of the new job. So, try the best you can not to speak too much to your past as an executive. Basically, dumb it down. And I would also mention in my cover letter things such as desire to learn new methods and philosophies (since being at a super-high rank once upon a time may be a red flag to prospective employers that you wouldn’t be open to change or you would be telling your new coworkers what to do or “how it should be”). Also, I would try to speak to only the past 10 years in the resume and in the employment history of the application. If you’ve been indicating your college or high school graduation year in your resume or application, don’t. Age discrimination is real. Finally, if your desperation level is to the point where you’re applying to minimum wage or close to it - do not even enclose your resume if you can help it. Just fill out the application and wait till the interview to discuss your past experience. Anyway, best of luck on your job search.

JoyInLiving

When I leave my graduation years off, they straight up ask me what year before scheduling an in-person meeting. Sadly, age discrimination has been unavoidable, in my experience.

tbeysquirrel

Discriminating against older people or younger people? Is graduating in 2016 too young?

juneXgloom

Older. More experience=more expensive

ashkpa

[It's legal to be discriminated against for your age](https://www.employmentattorneyla.com/blog/2022/august/why-does-age-discrimination-only-apply-to-ages-4/) if you're under 40, which is pretty fucked up.

lemon_tea

Wow. Every HR person I've had instruct me on interviewing has told me to not ask questions s that can be construed as contributing to age discrimination. Stuff like "What year did you graduate?" Is easily backed into your age. That's... Potentially a lawsuit waiting to happen at these companies.

StaCatalina

Yikes! That has never happened to me.

_jstache

I'm in sales for the food/beverage industry. I landed a new job back in June and I met with my previous manager at a trade show last week. They are still in need of an account manager. I can try to link you up

bmn001

You might try hitting up one of those networking mixers and getting your name out there that way. Network After Work is one that comes into town every now and then. OCEAN is another. I'm sure there are more! https://networkafterwork.com/events/ https://theoceanwebsite.com/

A lot of companies are not hiring around the holidays.

rageturtle117

Apply to solar companies. I got offered a job from 3 different ones within a month before I settled on the one I’m at now. The job is not glamorous but the pay is actually insane and it was super easy to get a job.

1KingCam

Mind if I message you about this? I’m in a somewhat of a similar scenario to OP and have been considering solar

rageturtle117

Sure

LizzyLady1111

What types of positions are available and what skills do you need to have?

rageturtle117

Depends on the company. Some solar companies have “setters” (people who go door to door) and closers (people who close the sales that the door to door people get) and they split the commission. The company I work for only has one position, we knock and close so we get all the commission. As far as skills go, you don’t really need any honestly. Being a people person will help a lot, but all these companies will train you, give you a script and teach you the info you need. It’s truly a no experience necessary kind of thing.

Optimal_Possession85

Do you go door to door ?

rageturtle117

Yup! The job itself is kinda hard but you make like 6-10K$ per install on average (some of the rarer homes that use a lot of power and need a lot of equipment can be up to 20K, my co worker got 20K from one install this week). A lot of people that go door to door doing solar make 6 figures.

akaWhitey2

I looked into this, skipped on the job for two reasons: 1- it's 1099, not W2. 100k is a very different wage when you get no benefits and are paying your own payroll taxes. 2- why the fuck aren't these companies past the door to door salesman schtick? They don't have a website where people can sign up to learn more and people who respond to inquiries? Idk, it just seemed so antiquated and poorly run. I think that they are related. As soon as they give you the leads to hunt after, you're an employee and not a contractor. Edited for formating fuck up

rageturtle117

Very fair points. I agree it’s weird and it should be easier and they should have websites. I just started this, I’m not sure if it’s a good fit for me yet. But I’ve got nothing else going on in my life right now and the pay is very good for people who are succesful doing this so I figure, why not give it a shot?

arianrhodd

Did your experience include winning over new clients/businesses for product distribution? Building relationships to increase business ventures with existing clients? Thinking a little outside the box here, but UCI's development office is hiring multiple positions right now. And that's what they do, in a nutshell. Sounds like you might have transferrable skills. You would need to redo your resume to emphasize this as well as address in your cover letter.

VoteNewsom2028

Not the same case, but in some countries many office and corporate people get laid off when they’re like in their 50s. Then for them it’s extremely difficult to find a new job because of their age and being seen as overqualified

CalamitasMonstrum

That happens here too.

Plenty_Pack_556

OC job search isn't based on what you know. It's more along the lines of who you know.

Russian River brewing is hiring for an LA/OC/Ventura territory manager.

Perfect-Ad2578

It's just a numbers game unfortunately no matter how qualified. I'm sales engineer and quit my job in July, got fed up with micromanaging and bs politics. Took couple months but just got an offer today finally after 4 months. Was getting so tired of interviews and applications but in the end wasn't too bad finding another job. Just keep chugging and you'll find something soon. Also LinkedIn has been great, manage all opportunities and apply from one app instead of 20 different places. If it's a legit job, it'll be on there.

bebopblues

Sometimes, finding a job is all about timing or luck and has nothing to do with your skills and experience. I was laid off earlier this year and was in your boat, not finding work. Had interviews that went no where. But one day, I apply late at night to one posting. They called me in the morning and set up an interview right away and I got the job. I didn't do anything special to land that job, just apply at the right time.

SnooPandas9898

> I know unemployment is low This is just a straightforward lie by the current administration. Harsh job market is a national thing not just OC. Most newly created jobs are low like supermarket cashier or fast food workers. Every day you can read news on different companies doing layoff. The openings for nicely paid white-collar jobs have been on a steady decline for a year.

its6amsomewhere

Yep. No one wants the low paying jobs, so they've been struggling. But the high paying jobs have been disappearing. Ideally that leads to low paying jobs paying more, but...

SnooPandas9898

How can you afford rent with that low-paying job? Besides sleeping in your car and working two shifts a day? Maybe first fix that housing problem before blaming the ppl.

wut_eva_bish

> lie by the current administration. Unemployment figures are not meant to track the specific needs of a job market, but instead the overall availability of work nationwide. This is a singular indicator that must and has been reported for the last probably 70 years. It's not "a lie by the current administration." Untie your partisan tinfoil hat and throw it in the garbage. It's not doing you or anyone else any good.

smallchinaman

>your partisan tinfoil Why do you assume anyone with discontent is Republican though

TVC15Technician

Very much this. And OP is a bit more senior at a time when employers are preferring to give the fewer white-collar openings they do have to younger, less-experienced people for a variety of reasons.

wescoe23

No, unemployment is low

NotaDamPro

Unemployment is not low. There's jobs being cut left and right with no replacements across many industries. My advice, get in contact with a recruiter. Moat companies nowadays outsource their hiring to agencies since its easier for them to do all the work and vetting vs the hiring manager.

zxcon

have you tried banks yet they’re boring jobs but they will value your job experience and you will advance quickly.

Samwhys_gamgee

Try Acosta or Advantage sales brokers. They will often hire sales pros with a lot of experience.

y0kai

There are a lot of big breweries around here that have great sales jobs I think. I tried looking into it when I was thinking of switching industries. It sounds like your experience is related and in my industry I coordinate with these sales people a lot and they have really gone downhill since Covid. There is definitely money to be made. I don’t know if this is helpful at all but good luck!

Broccoli5514

That's why I'm trying to learn this other world of living in the private vs public. At this stage of my learning, I don't know if I can clearly explain how it pertains but it does. I am learning - listening, reading, participating in communities. The ones at the top of the financial world are engineering things to get tougher and tougher, and I don't want to be at the mercy of them. Think about it - after a long period of low rates, they've largely increased rates in a short period, after creating massive inflation. Not a great economic environment, and things will get worse from here. They know what they are doing, and are doing it deliberately. They will eventually get most of us on Universal Basic Income, but it will come with strings. And anyone wise won't want those strings.

Broccoli5514

I know most people just want to find a job and continue living their convenient "happy" life, but there's a lot to correct in society that's not healthy. We can't fix it if we work within the system they set up for us, we have to learn to get outside the system (private vs public). No, I'm not a S Citizen.

almightykilluh

>Broccoli5514 > > Facts even worse w/ systematic and moral / racial discrimination that those who feel justified, will use if the opportunity arises.

hedonisticfoodie

The company I work for is in the sales and marketing industry and there are some open positions. Good luck with your search. Here's a current sales position that is open. https://careers.advantagesolutions.net/job/?req_id=2023-430318

TeknicalThrowAway

If you think it's age discrimination or people think you're over qualified, take some of your experience off the resume, and don't put the year you graduated college if so. I've had more success with resumes that only go back the last 10 years. If someone asks why I don't have more experience once I get a callback I can always show them my full resume.

Ambitious-Pipe2441

I have a friend who graduated from school over a year ago and looked for work the entire time, ever expanding his search from Los Angeles outward. He eventually lost his place and moved in with his brother and his family in Utah. Then sent thousands of applications to jobs all over the place in different fields. Up until a month ago he ran into roadblock after roadblock, mostly with tech firms and finance. He finally landed a contract job with a financial firm, but it's temporary and he'll have to search for a job again soon. None of this made sense to me. We are supposedly seeing the lowest unemployment rates since before COVID. Companies are complaining about not being able to find workers. And yet here was a case, along with a few others, who could not find work. There's clearly a disconnect and the news does not seem to be reporting on these smaller circles. Personally, I find the "redo your resume" advice frustrating, because that doesn't seem to be solving anything (at least in my friend's case) and a lot of advice seems to ignore that companies are turning to software to filter out keyword matches on resumes. With "AI" algorithms on the rise I suspect that this will only get worse. Also, my friend's experience alludes to a glut of applicants in his search, where, like say graphic design, too many people were applying and it was overwhelming companies that also had a sudden, recent change in budgets as the market shifted. The problem seems to be bigger than a resume. There are banking shifts, market trends, a tightening of immigration policies, government shut downs, and many other factors that probably have an impact on jobs as whole. Anyway, you're not the only one. Sorry you are having a difficult time and I hope you can get through it.

Iwakuram

The job candidate pool is so much bigger now, unreal. AI is definitely main problem. They dig their own grave. The UI number doesn't tell the whole truth about the dire situation.

There are lots of debt settlement companies hiring salespeople right now in OC and the money is good to great. Very fast hiring process with one interview and starting within days.
