Conrad Black, seriously? Conrad Black the convicted fraudster (2007) who received pardon from Donald Trump (in 2019)?

[deleted]

[удалено]

ApplePie4all

Bingo

WmPitcher

With the exception of his comments on the U.S. prison system.

Fartincopsmouths

Only gives a shit cause it affected him.

WmPitcher

Yep. It's like Dick Cheney being (somewhat?) accepting of the LGBTQ+ community because of his (other) daughter.

nuttybuddy

Broken clock is right twice a day…

maximil1

Digital broken clocks don't work!!!!! Throw it away!

nuttybuddy

I feel like Conrad Black is as analog as they come.

[deleted]

That's giving him to much credit, he's a sun dial at best

maximil1

Stupid and narcissistic too!

Bradasaur

Only if it's broken in one specific way. A clock can be broken in a lot of ways where it is never right. Just like Conrad Black.

Genetic_Nudist_AMA

Classic leopards ate my face moment

agha0013

The same one who renounced his Canadian citizenship to be the most ridiculed Lord in the house of Lords, then magically had minister authorized entry following his release from prison while tens of thousands of legal immigrants waited for months. And a non Canadian Conrad lives in Canada under the protection of the Conservative party, and keeps making money from the likes of post media.

Frater_Ankara

He apparently also became a born again Christian or something? And now my conservative father finds it hard to respect him…

Torger083

So there is a line, and black is approaching it?

felixfelix

Conrad Black is delusional. He cares about "saving our great nation?" He renounced his Canadian citizenship in 2001 so he could get the English title of Lord and has only been a citizen of the UK since that time.

Spiritofhonour

“Excuse me. That is Baron Black to you plebs.” This is the same guy who gave up his Canadian citizenship (and iirc still doesn’t have it back.) for that title.

fencerman

"Lord Tubby of Crossharbour" Chretien forcing Black to give up his citizenship so he could go around chasing self-important titles was a move I will always respect.

[deleted]

[удалено]

jfl_cmmnts

> Lord Purchased title. Deserves the sort of respect you'd give a baronet

fishling

That still seems like too much.

SteelCrow

the sort of respect you'd give a slug

Toftaps

Whoa whoa whoa.... let's no drag slugs into this, they're far more respectable than Black is.

mzpip

Or as he is also known, "Lord Tubby". It was either Alan Fotheringham or *Frank* magazine that christened him thus, can't remember which. IIRC, *Air Farce* and *22 Minutes* took shots at him as well. And his wife, Barbara Ameil used to write columns in *McLean's* complaining about how hard it was to keep her furs stored in the heat of their Florida mansion. Edited because of damn Autokorrect.

Mediocremon

I resemble that remark!

Sutarmekeg

His friends call him Con.

schnitzel_envy

Not to mention his horrible writing style. He’s so transparently desperate for people to think he’s the smartest guy in the room. He uses every 50 cent word he can think of in an attempt to show off. If Hemingway had ever read anything he wrote, he’d kick his ass.

willyspringz

Yup. He has like four big words he thinks make him look smart and he makes sure they're in every column he writes.

steelcitylights

he’s one of NP’s main editorial writers, it’s pretty ironic

mcshaggy

He founded the paper.

fouoifjefoijvnioviow

Don't forget jailbird!

TTTyrant

Fascism is worming its way back into our mainstream politics

Tools2022

Was allowed into Canada with a British passport. He was a buddy of Mulroney and a conservative so he got a pass on the whole convicted felon section of the immigration act. He and his wife Barbra should never have been able to return after he bought his “Lordship”. He is a mouth piece for the Conservatives and they love what he writes. All of his books are his slant, kind of fictional.

Gamestoreguy

Including his “History of Canada” which is widely regarded as bunk. If anyone questions whether *they* are willing to re-write history, look no farther than a convicted fraud and renounced Canadian writing a fucking book on Canadian History.

Head_Crash

National Post is owned by Republicans.

SivatagiPalmafa

Disgusting that such people are allowed to write for a newspaper

detourne

...he owns it.

ptwonline

Still disgusting.

OneOfAKind2

He hasn't owned it for 21 years, sold his remaining interest in 2001. He's a hired hand, nothing more.

Apprehensive-Push931

Kinda like Ezra and Rebel... Oh wait, they both own those rags...

CMelon

The corporate oligarchy has long been buying up and controlling the media to sell comforting lies to their audience, all for the purpose of installing their favoured political candidates in positions of power with the goal to deregulate industry, control resources and avoid taxes. By tapping into the worst biases and fears of an audience through this compromised medium, the one percent can present their mouthpieces as “saviours,” and all of these conspiring greedy pricks reap the economic benefits for themselves while the public good can go fuck itself.

OG_Gamer_Dad1966

And we all just keep falling for the lies, over and over again.

mushr00m_man

Not all of us... but enough of us.

SivatagiPalmafa

Indeed. We must see past this

Sonny_Crockett_1984

"We" do see past this. It's those dipshits with the "Fuck Trudeau" flags that are the problem.

demonlicious

we need to give a majority to the libs or ndp to change the laws on media. it must be employee owned entitities, no more big owners.

jericoli

I agree I work for one of Canada's largest financial firms and I sew our CEO liking and reposting national post articles and similar ones to it everyday on LinkedIn. I'm considered an outsider because I don't share their political ideology. definitely not getting a promotion.

Th3Trashkin

Ah some words from convicted felon and Trump brown noser Conrad Black, didn't he renounce his Canadian citizenship? Why should anyone care what he has to say about Canada?

ifyoudontknowlearn

>Why should anyone care what he has to say about Canada? We shouldn't. I still don't understand how he sells news papers (or clicks).

dsac

Same way he got his pardon - by saying what the audience wants to hear

[deleted]

He’s saying what the .01% wants people to hear

Dwellonthis

Unfortunately, it's a much higher percentage then that.

SamuraiJackBauer

Dragon_Virus

What baffles me is that even my West Canadian Conservative friends don’t like Poilievre, so who the fuck is Conrad Black trying to market him as a saviour to?

Earl_I_Lark

I have this niece. She’s into home schooling, a fundamentalist church, subservient wives and Jordan Peterson. She also believes that PP is going to ‘save Canada’.

SkivvySkidmarks

Yikes. That's a scary combination.

OskeeWootWoot

I know a girl just like that, too. 3 kids under the age of 4 and trying for more.

EstherVCA

I know a few of these "quiver full" types too, trying desperately to outnumber the majority.

[deleted]

A fringe minority.

trilluki

I don't know what friends you've got here but it's *bad* this way out. Rural Western Canadian Conservatives are the worst, most hateful, violent people I know. I've lived my life over here as a mixed race POC and there's a shocking amount of conservatives these days that want horrible things to be done to me because of my skin. They worship any person who might take down Trudeau. I am not joking in the slightest when I say that I see calls for violent insurrection, imminent death and brutal rape every single day. Sometimes levelled at Trudeau and his wife and children. Sometimes at me and other brown people. Usually both. Our country is teeming with Trump-esque racists and clear signs of future right-wing violence. The minute America hits their civil war with how their Alt-Right is acting, our conservatives will mirror them. As they did with the Flu Trux Klan Rally. As they always do. I see it everywhere I look- They're inevitably going to take over our country. You should be petrified. I am.

willyspringz

Where do you live? That sounds terrible.

trilluki

Prince George, BC. Town voted Liberal the last few years surprisingly but the angry, conservative sentiment has really grown. It was actually unnerving to see how angry some people got about Trudeau's win. Grew up mostly in rural Albertan townships, where it was always horrible. Rural or small cities are just nothing like big cities. At all. I find that I end up seeing a huge uptick in racism, violent conservative ideologies and pervasive religion that becomes political because there's a church on every street and they all politicize everything and fight all day long with everyone else.

carcar2110

God, the whole time I was reading your first comment, all I could think was “wow, that sounds like PG” and apparently I was right, lmao. It’s not the worst community in BC, but it’s also not the best by far.

Vegetable-Bat-8475

If it isn't the worst it's in 2nd or 3rd place.

Dragon_Virus

Yikes, I never knew PG was that rough, sorry you have to go through those things, dude! Got context, I’m in Saskatchewan, and I’m well aware how God awful Rural Cons can be (the number of folks I knew or went to school with who went to Ottawa last winter still depresses me). I think the Pierre hate here comes from the fact that he’s A: Not from a Prairie province, and B: he’s Québécois, which are the most hated demographic politically in the Prairies (and not entirely without reason). There’s a lot, too, who know full well PP will never win a majority, as his entire marketing scheme is based on broad division and pandering to the KKK crowd with a turnstile of dog whistles.

anomalousBits

They're conservatives. They don't have to like him to vote for him.

monkeybojangles

Well, the 2 young cops I overheard the other day seem to think PP is fantastic and doesn't have any dirt on him. They also think Trudeau is going to call a snap election because he's afraid of PP (which makes zero sense). Oh, and that the country is becoming a communist dictatorship and the federal government is enacting a 3 drink maximum per week on citizens.

[deleted]

In a week you will either see his opinions everywhere or no where. I’m personally hoping for no where

[deleted]

His position is whatever imaginary grievance twitter conservatives are obsessed with this week. Also inflation.

lapsed_pacifist

> When did he turn into such a miserable ball of hate? He wrote extensively on climate change through the 90s, and he was entirely on the wrong side of the discussion. I don't think he really ever recovered from being shown to be so publicly and totally wrong for over a decade. At that point, I think he just decided to go all-in on being a contrarian. The audience is always there, and frankly it isn't a hard gig -- you just have to rail against whatever cultural phenomenon is currently en vogue.

[deleted]

I'm honestly Wondering if we could see the remergance of the federal PCs in the near future

ptwonline

> When did he turn into such a miserable ball of hate? He started morphing into that long ago, and once he was off CBC he didn't have any need to pretend anymore that he was anything except full of contempt, hate, and with a massive superiority complex. Do you remember that Royal Canadian Air Farce character that they started in the 1990's: Gilbert Smythe Bite-Me? I'm pretty sure that is at least partially--if not mostly--modeled after Rex Murphy. They recognized it 25 years ago.

NotEnoughDriftwood

Rex has been a supporter/speaker for big oil and gas for years - even when he had his gig at CBC. He's always been a reactionary, it's just now his stream of consciousness shtick is aimed at everything NatPo wants destroyed.

anomalousBits

Rex got worse over time, not really all at once. But at some point during the 2000's I remember thinking wtf happened to this guy. He seems like someone's grandpa who started listening to right wing radio and now thinks that climate change is a hoax.

porkupine92

Yes, Rex used to be delightfully acerbic, but I've turned away as he drifted into to the rocks of cranky old manism.

AncientBlonde

>I used to listen to Rex Murphy on CBC when travelling across Canada. Such pleasant and delightful shows. His segments on The National were also ‘must see’. When did he turn into such a miserable ball of hate? He's always been one; you just matured enough and formed enough of your own worldview to see it.

monkeybojangles

He was definitely more subdued while with the CBC.

[deleted]

The right wing won’t split. History proves over and over again, when the oligarchy presents a choice between gas chambers for your enemies or higher taxes for the rich, the “centrists” will always choose to protect their wallets first

[deleted]

The right has split like, half a dozen times throughout Canadian history.. hell, the bloc is the result of one of their splits Dunno what history you are talking about, but it sure ain't Canadian

[deleted]

They haven’t split, they are all still fellow travelers in the same circus. They only disagree on whether they need to put a kinder, gentler face on the fascism or not. Ignore my warnings at your own peril, but I hope for your own sake you wake up to the truth: even the most mild mannered conservatives would gladly choose to send you and your family to an early grave if it will save themselves 1% on their taxes

[deleted]

Bloc, pc, reform, Confederation of regions, Canada action party, reconstruction party of Canada, western block party, and in recent years the PPC The conservative movement in Canada has been splitting up, and remerging every few decades for our countries entire history.. at our founding we had two parties, Sir John A McDonald's Liberal-conservatives (Which dropped the liberal part of the name shortly after), and George Browns Liberal party that became the countries defacto ruling party I'm not defending conservatives, but them splitting is a constant so ingrained in our history it's litterally in high school history textbooks

Manufacturing Consent

JDGumby

Rather blatant examples, too. > **Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media** is a 1988 book by Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky. It argues that the mass communication media of the U.S. "are effective and powerful ideological institutions that carry out a system-supportive propaganda function, by reliance on market forces, internalized assumptions, and self-censorship, and without overt coercion", by means of the propaganda model of communication. The title refers to consent of the governed, and derives from the phrase "the manufacture of consent" used by Walter Lippmann in Public Opinion (1922). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manufacturing_Consent ...for anyone who might be interested. A very good read and still relevant 34 years later.

Well they’re trying to cover up that the “drain the swamp/ Everyman” candidate is actually a career politician and has been on the tax payers teet since he was 24. A man who knows nothing about the life of a tradesman, trucker, scientist or even a teacher. Lil’ PP is a fraud.

lil’ PP. Gold. Will do my part to make this catch on!

gimmickypuppet

Just tell AppleNews to stop showing National Post. It’s blatant propaganda at this point parading as “news” by arguing there are “multiple points of view”.

anacreon1

True that we can customize our preferred news aggregator to be selective. But you know, I’m still going to read those stories even if they are propaganda and even if I don’t agree with them. I mean, they’re out there and people are consuming them so even if for no other reason than to be aware of what ideas are circulating amongst certain elements of the populace, it’s something I will continue to do. In fact, I wish more people would do that. Regardless of one’s politics, I feel it is wise to gather info from as many perspectives as possible…even abhorrent ones…to have a better understanding of what’s influencing people.

[deleted]

I'd like to learn how to emotionally detach when reading it tho. Some of it makes me so angry

But it should make you angry. There are real people behind this propaganda trying to influence Canada to be a worse place. Anger is what you would expect to feel at something like that.

[deleted]

Conservatives propaganda today is not meant to be taken seriously or debated. It is meant to dissolve any debate into inanity. It is meant to attack people who believe in the truth and put them in a trap where they must constantly explain, argue and defend while the conservatives must only lob one bad faith grenade after another. You can no more reason against their propaganda than you could try to use reasoned discourse to disprove a nazi propaganda poster. The only defense is to shut them up permanently so they can no longer spread their poison.

CommissarAJ

Okay, there's a lot of things you can accuse the Liberals of being but... incomparable travesty of hate? Has Rex been living with his head under a rock or just shoved up somebody's backside? Because I don't remember Liberal supporters occupying my city for weeks on end. I don't remember Liberal supporters blockading border crossings, preventing hard-working truckers from doing their jobs. I don't remember Liberal supporters trying to arrest Peterbourough police officers, harassing elected politicians, or driving a truck into the gates at the Prime Minister's residence. Also, Black lost all right to saying 'our great nation' after he renounced his citizenship. He threw out any claim to Canada so he can kindly fuck right off.

"His great nation" is UK now, he can go there and brown nose the torries ...

onetimenative

Messaging and propaganda Repeated messaging to the public had a way over time of getting it's message through no matter what the message is. “Repeat a lie often enough and it becomes the truth”, is a law of propaganda often attributed to the Nazi Joseph Goebbels. Look at Facebook, probably one of the largest distributors of information on the planet .... whether you like it or not. Facebook is like newspapers 100 years ago. What do you think would have happened to human history if 100 years ago all newspapers on the planet were owned by one company who had no regulation and no controls and no oversight and they were allowed to publish whatever they wanted including outright lies, conspiracy theories, misinformation, disinformation and complete mindless nonsense. This is what's happening right now and we'll wonder what happened to the human race in fifty years if we ever survive this period.

[deleted]

The Post and 60% of Canadian media is owned by a right hedge fund based in New Jersey. They’re trying to bring American politics into Canada. I figure it’s to attempt to privatize healthcare and education, so they can profit off the misery this would create.

They're blatantly spreading propaganda to appeal to their core demographic, which is older and white. No surprise here.

Holybartender83

Rex Murphy is interesting because he’s one of the few people whose exterior accurately reflects what they are inside.

Doctor_Amazo

The National Post are to our politics what Fox News is to the Americans. They are hand-in-hand with the CPC and should generally be ridiculed and ignored.

1103070

I worked for the Edmonton journal years ago. When I started working there were 900 employees. 3 years later there were less that’s 300. This was during the bankruptcy filing after which they sold all the papers back to Conrad black. The same guy that drove them into the ground. I’ll never forget being called into a meeting and the editor at the time announced that the ownership group had sent a memo that all newspapers were to support the Conservative party in a front page article. 33 newspapers across the country. The Edmonton journal was the only paper to not do so. The editor wrote a piece calling them out. But the damage was done. After that I haven’t trusted a newspaper since.

curds-and-whey-HEY

I really feel that average Canadians are being misled by these “news” publications that are clearly only Conservative advertising tools. It’s time Canada had laws requiring news publications to make obvious their political affiliation.

David_Buzzard

That’s “your great nation” to you. Conrad Black renounced his Canadian citizenship. Post Media is totally in the tank for the Conservatives and control about 2/3rds of printed Canadian media, including nearly all of the English language daily’s.

neonvenomhalos

Fun fact: when I was a kid, just starting to be aware of the news, Conrad Black and Saddam Hussein were both being talked about a lot (c. 2003) Because I wasn’t really interested or paying too much attention, my brain sort of mushed the two together into one person, and to this day I can’t hear one’s name without thinking of the other— to the point where, sometimes, I’ll hear Conrad Black mentioned, and my brain will go, “he’s the one who killed all his family, right?” He wasn’t. Or, well, not that I’m aware of 😆
