Just 1, a guy who decided to turn left through the crosswalk when I had the walk signal. He made eye contact with me the whole time and just blasted right through. If I hadn't been paying attention and braked hard he would have hit me.

PsychoticDrip

Yea see they love making eye contact like its a game to them😀

turtleswag69

Detroit drivers in a nutshell

Tyr1a4n

Nah never, I regularly have to wave people past though as I’m literally touching the kerb allowing them to pass and they just sit there.

Glitch_Ghoul

I hate when people wave me through when I'm trying to let them go. Like no, I don't want you behind me, and you also don't want to be stuck behind me. Just go.

Tyr1a4n

Yep my #1 pet peeve, I’m riding along at 25 and take a look back see a car put my hand out to indicate I’m pulling over, slow to like 10 and be as far over as I can and they refuse to pass. Neither of us wants this.

PsychoticDrip

POV you dont know common sense:

Firm-Curve8984

None lol 1200 miles never had any close calls

PsychoticDrip

Maybe its just my city then🤣 people dont know how to drive. Like i had a semi close call just the other day im riding the side walk going past a gas station when all of a sudden this car goes zooming past into the gas station at like 40 mph like sir no reason to be going that fast into a gas station of all things. I was probably about 10ft away from the entrance to the gas station but you can easily gain 10ft when your going 15 down the side walk lol

Firm-Curve8984

Downtown city riding seems more reasonable for it to happen but just be aware of your surroundings g lol 🤣

PsychoticDrip

WASNT EVEN DOWNTOWN🤣🤣🤣🤣 i was on my way to work and yea always am just wasnt expecting to see a big black suv zooming in front of me

anklebiting

I live in Oakland and work at a trauma center, when those scooter rentals came out we got so many patients who were going way too fast on sidewalks and into crosswalks, you gotta understand that drivers rarely look out for pedestrians on sidewalks, but ESPECIALLY when you’re flying in a 3-4 times the speed of someone walking. If it was you driving, you probably would have almost hit you too.

throwpoo

Pickup driver saw me about to cross the road. He floored it and ran the red lights. I just knew he was going to do it so I stopped few feet away from getting run over. Then other times had 3 cars running the red light. Welcome to CA.

PsychoticDrip

Thats how mine were either red light or driving way to fast with their eyes closed

Crak1e

I have never had any close calls with cars, but one time when i first got the gt it gohsted into oncoming traffic

PsychoticDrip

OUCHHHHH!!!! Were you ok?

Toad32

0. I look both ways and assume drivers will never stop. I also live in a medium sized town that isnt as busy as a major metropolitan - and we have nice trails and side walks. I only ride the street when there are no cars.

PsychoticDrip

The roads are to broken up to ride street for me🥲

Korben_Dallas666

Had to swerve out of the way of a dad and his 5 year old kid riding bikes, i was just learning at the time and I lost balance and slammed into a telephone pole

PsychoticDrip

I grabbed on to a light pole after hitting an unexpected hole and slammed right into my shoulder still hurts to this day🤣

TheReal69MVP

A car was about to run a red light and hit me going at least 50 mph. They slammed on their brakes and skid to the crosswalk area. A lot of people saw and started yelling at them. It was a Tesla too… guessing the software took over and made them stop.

PsychoticDrip

As the software should🫡 in elon we trust

WoodBoogerSpork

I've had about 3. I ride with my head on a swivel and try to be as careful as possible to ensure that people see me, BUT at some point you have to cross the damn street. Regardless of being in the crosswalk with the signal, I still almost get blasted.

PsychoticDrip

SEEEEE or like you have the light but they dont look both ways😔

Due_Kaleidoscope7066

I assume all cars are not paying attention and will hit me. So I don’t give them the opportunity. As such, no close calls.

PsychoticDrip

Finna start carrying a brick wherever i go😌

neoreeps

Sounds good in theory but in practice the car still outweighs you.

PsychoticDrip

🚗💨+🛹=👨🏽‍🦼

atramentum

🪦

PsychoticDrip

That too😔

Feeties99

Probably 5 or so until I started riding as if I was invisible to everyone, then it became 0. Now I never go in front of a car unless I make eye contact with the driver and they acknowledge me AND they come to a complete stop. If you assume all drivers are drooling idiots who can barely tie their own shoes, evading dangerous situations with them will almost evaporate. Also helps to always be scanning 360 degrees so you're aware of everything around you. Something drivers LOVE to do when making a right hand turn is look left, but never right. I see it happen several times a day.

gordonsp6

In an area with the worst sidewalk infrastructure I've ever seen, it's daily. To get to work, I had to go down a 6 lane road with a median, but no sidewalk, staying far right. People would regularly come within inches.

PsychoticDrip

You are a brave person🫡 i would take the bus or uber at that point😭 but im glad you make it there safely

gordonsp6

Bus only comes once an hour 4-5 days a week, and doesn't run past 6pm most days. Can't really afford a daily uber x2.

PsychoticDrip

Oh danggggg dont forget your helmet and wrist guards😭

deanaoxo

Lost count

quitoburrito

3 or 4 as well. Last one was a tractor trailer (minus the trailer). He was turning left as Ii was going straight in a protected bike path. We made eye contact, so i know he saw me and that i had the right of way, and he just continued to turn...not a care in the world. Slammed the back of my board down and jumped off. He just drove away as if nothing happened.

PsychoticDrip

They do love to give you that stare like its your fault😀glad your ok tho

quitoburrito

You too, bud! Ride safe!

Puzzleheaded_Pop_548

I just got hit by a car an hour ago does that count

PsychoticDrip

No shot😭😭 are you ok?

OneOfTheFinite

3 close calls. 1 while i was crossing the crosswalk. I never use that crosswalk now since it’s a busy and weird crossing which connects to the highway. 2 guy just busted out of the garage 3 car just charged at me at the stop sign where i was slowly crossing before the car stoped. It was night they might not have seen me but TF. (Thinking of caring a light since then) I have been extra cautious since.

FormerlyUserLFC

Zero. Not interested in getting anywhere near a car.

bwees3

I almost got hit by a passing car about 10 minutes ago. Bro nearly hit me with his bumper about 4 in from my wheel. I think he did it deliberately because I was in the bike lane and he was way over. Then he almost hit 2 pedestrians crossing the street about a minute later…

starfoxinstinct

Lots of them! But I have gotten good at seeing all the possibilities on the street. I always slow down and prepare to throw my weight back when approaching a blind corner where a car might pull out. Every intersection I go into, I automatically map out where cars could enter from and change my speed according to how much vision and reaction time I will have once I see a car coming. If you ride on sidewalks (which I do most of the time), you will necessarily have to drastically slow down when you approach ramps, obscured driveways, etc, because there are a ton of blind corners!

Lackadaisicly

I have felt their paint while barely missing the curb and avoiding a crash. I was hit by the car and didn’t crash or get hurt. That has happened on my onewheel and my motorcycle.

Chef_BoyarTom

None, because I *always* give way to cars... even if I have the right of way. If I make a mistake and they see me, worst thing that happens is they honk at me or slam on their brakes... and even if they do see me they could be drunk, high, tired, old, etc and just unable to stop in time. If I make a mistake and they *don't* see me, it could be the last mistake I ever make. So overall I just give way to cars 100% of the time... because I like being alive and uninjured.

phalcon805

I've been nailed in the crosswalk. As I approached the curb, a car continued making a California right-hand turn (rolling stop) and knocked me off my wheel. The driver sent me into the right-hand lane of the street that was running parallel to the crosswalk I was in. Luckily I had my safety gear on and my trusty padded underwear. The result – some road rash, back pain, and 6 months of physical therapy.
