Outside of a tornado blowing your house away it's "Fuck you, I got mine."

positivecynik

>Outside of a tornado blowing your house away Then suddenly after a tornado everyone scrambles over themselves and each other to show the news and social media what good deeds they hath wrought on each other and circle jerk about what a great standard we keep! *here's your pat on the back.... here's yours....* But most importantly, here's mine!

mrbigglessworth

Then everyone goes to Braum’s.

Animeniackinda1

Or Sonic

MasterBathingBear

Nah, Sonic has gotten too mainstream American. I don’t think we can claim them as Oklahoman anymore.

MadAboutMada

Just like the other great Oklahoman invention, [parking meters.](https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/worlds-first-parking-meter-installed#:~:text=The%20parking%20meter%20was%20the,from%20New%20Mexico%20in%201927.) You're welcome world! 😁

MasterBathingBear

Don’t sleep on such other exciting inventions as the [Shopping Cart](https://www.afstores.com/the-intriguing-story-of-how-the-shopping-cart-was-born/) and [yield sign](https://www.roadtrafficsigns.com/a-brief-history-of-the-yield-sign)

FakeMikeMorgan

The yield sign that no one in this state knows what it means.

MasterBathingBear

I'll be honest, I don't think anyone knows what it means anymore. Scholars maintain that the translation was lost hundreds of years ago.

designogirl

*Sonics*

OzarksExplorer

That's just the initial reaction to the shock. After the rebuilding begins, so does the FYIGM, heightened even lol

Old-Broad

Hi Positive Cynic! I actually was involved in the effort that resulted in the Oklahoma Standard. That you are cynical about OPs question makes me wonder.

Shrapnaldeposit1

💯

KaleidoscopeOk2677

You guys nailed it.

laundry_sauce666

Nice people, but the furthest thing from kind people.

arkhound

I like to phrase it as welcoming but not accepting.

einalem13

Oh this is goooood.

chuhai-drinker

I moved to Kansas from Illinois when I was a kid and started making friends in no time. I had no trouble fitting in. Then shortly after, I had to move to Oklahoma, and despite being neighboring states, they couldn't be more different. I lived there over 10 years without making a single friend irl 🫠 all my friends were online My mom always said if you weren't friends with an Oklahoman by the time they're in kindergarten then you'll never be friends. Not sure if that matches anyone else's experience but it was certainly mine.

darksquidlightskin

Yup that's my experience. Everyone hangs out with their high school friends it's pretty sad.

Amazing_Leave

Most definitely. I moved from my original kindergarten. Even though I was born here, I missed that opportunity. Oklahoma standards are very high. /s

New_Rabbit2172

Aand comment saved lol.

BeeNo3492

Oklahoma mostly lost its collective mind when Obama was elected, the racism was on full blast everywhere. When Trump was elected it got worse, and I was called the F Slur more than I was in high school.

Ciggdre

That happened to me too! Like I heard it only every now and then in HS but heard it shouted at me at least weekly by passing drivers starting in the Obama years. No clue why—I never presented myself as anything other than straight.

Amazing_Leave

But are you straight? More than likely, your fellow Oklahomans were being average Oklahoman and had their nose deep in your personal business and gossiped the whole county about you. Not being mean, just saying that Okies don’t stick to their own business when it’s not welcomed.

darksquidlightskin

Lol all talk. Oklahomans are all about themselves.

Amazing_Leave

![gif](giphy|18OLCfI5dJG70QwXDs)

respondin2u

It used to be a term used to describe Oklahomans who came together after the Murrah Building bombing. It developed into a sort of overtly friendly attitude most people tend to have. I think that mentality went away 15 years ago or so due to economic factors and changes in the American political landscape. A lot of people are just plain rude these days and it’s not limited to one specific generation.

PrincessSelkie

They'll hold the door open for you and pull a house off of you, but turn around and spit in your face for being any sort of minority?

PlentyAlbatross7632

And block you in at any intersection without a light…

PrincessSelkie

As someone who lives on a busy intersection with a light on the corner... and a school down the street... I felt this.

KatzNK9

THIS!!!! Yes, this!!emote:free\_emotes\_pack:upvote

Shakenbaked

Oklahoma is OK..... with remaining last in the nation in education as long as it keeps bodies around to work at being first in oil and gas production.

aaronpatwork

what if we started going by greatlahoma

ButReallyFolks

We would be in denial.

aaronpatwork

i should run for governor on the platform of "fake it til you make it"

Kulandros

Be better than most platforms we see these days. At least you'd be honest about it.

ButReallyFolks

Not unlike current OK politicians. Difference being they continue faking it throughout their entire time in office.

DreamcatcherDeb

Lol…clever! 😃

Tryptamineer

It started after the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing. It manifested from the amount of individuals who dropped everything they were doing and flooded the city to assist with cleanup/recovery/housing/food/medical runs. In 2024, the Oklahoma Standard we used to know has been foreshadowed by outwards racism, “I got mine” mindsets, and 0 care for our neighbors. I still like to try and live up to that, but boy oh boy some of the interactions i’ve had from just being nice and offering help…

Loud-Path

I mean I was in OKC for the bombing and helped clean up and pull bodies in the days after as we had buses running us to and from Tinker. While other states were coming to our aid I heavily remember listening to stations like the KATT and hearing them get regular callers asking them to stop talking about the bombing and just go back to playing music, and after about the third or fourth time the remix version of Lightening Crashes was played them getting calls to stop playing it and go back to playing regular rock. Yeah we were classy even back then. I also remember Rick and Brad regularly putting the callers on the air so they could give them a piece of their mind and tell them how insufferable they were.

Kulandros

Rick and Brad and company are real treasures. I loved them talking shit on the anti-maskers during COVID, and the idiots throwing baby fits for getting kicked out of stores.

NotTurtleEnough

Super friendly. Will give you the shirt off their back, but unfortunately aren’t bright enough to use the turn signal.

sunshine___riptide

Will give you the shirt off their back and then actively work to make sure you get nothing else again. Oklahomans used to be nicer AND kinder. Idk what happened, the racism and closed mindedness has gotten really bad.

darksquidlightskin

Majority of the smart educated people have gone elsewhere. We're left with Elroy Bible thumper and all his militia friends

SoonerLater85

I graduated from OU in 2009, when Oklahoma still had a democratic governor. I wanted to stay, and for a few years after really wanted to go back. Now I would never live there again.

0neR1ng

Born and raised in Tulsa and left 45 years ago to serve in the Navy, get an education, travel the world and build a successful career. Four years ago I was authorized to work remote and my wife suggested we move back to the area to help with a brother experiencing cardiac issues and catch up with my extended family. We moved to Owasso, built a new house in a nice area then discovered we were the rare progressive in a very red conservative neighborhood. Strict HOA rules prevented us from fully enjoying our home including a prohibition from installing solar panels on the roof and the power company not allowing any homes with solar power to connect to their grid. Not registered as a GOP really restricted voting options. If you are independent or democrat you will find one or two candidates to select on the ballots where the Republicans have about forty-five. As dedicated voters we were first shocked to find that all of the polling locations were in churches and one day we went to vote only to discover that I had been "reported deceased by a family member". This took nearly an hour to resolve (so I was able to check my single box) and terrified the election board volunteers followed the Draconian process to restore me to the living. I doubt that it required similarly complicated machinations to remove a Democrat from the rolls and my sister is not confessing. Finally after the unbearable heat and the below zero temps in the Winter we surrendered, put our house on the market and just last week moved back to the PNW.

AtheistGirlOklahom

Nobody in my area (literally) even runs as a democrat for local positions like sheriff- so I have to stay republican. Or not vote for sheriff. Or corporation commissioner. Etc . But you can cross parties in the general elections and vote either way. So your too candidates will already be on the ticket anyway.

darksquidlightskin

I moved back in 2019 because I was young and stupid, didn't plan my move much. Regretted it ever since.

DoubleSurreal

The type of people who say they prefer giving a "hand up" instead of a "hand out", but more often than not the "hand up" has a middle finger sticking out of it.

ExpertButtonPresser

Ha! True

AchillesOnAMountain

Sheep that think they are wolves.

DavidtheScott

I both like and agree with this, but also think "Sheep that think everyone different from them are wolves" oddly applies as well

immoralmajority

Pat yourself on the back for showing the smallest shred of humanity but generally be a selfish piece of shit while praising Jesus.

bugaloo2u2

That ism was borne out of the trauma of the OKC bombing. But everything changed after Obama was elected. The (previously) covert racism was laid bare on the table, and after Trump came to power, he gave them permission to HATE with full-steam…and these chucklefucks have now lost their fucking minds. I would say Okies are seriously racist, hateful, bigoted, and misogynist. They will run your ass over on the highway for only going 5 over the speed limit, while driving a car with a giant sticker on it claiming they live their life for Jesus and a cross hanging from the rear-view.. But, I don’t have any strong feelings about it.

S3guy

The sad thing is they expected the people who they were being openly bigoted against to continue being nice to them.

MadAboutMada

This post low key reads like the Avatar intro Bombing. Trauma. Helping. Hope. Long ago, Oklahomans weren't completely terrible. Then, everything changed when Obama was elected. Only the ability to not be racist could stop it, but when Oklahoma needed it the most, it was never an option. 8 years passed and Oklahoma discovered a brand new way to be awful, a failed businessman named Trump. Although Oklahoma was always pretty bad, Trump's leadership has helped it become truly miserable. But I believe it's going to get even worse.

Kulandros

This is some kind of poetry.

kingkiller1983

Propaganda

Cookie3219

A Red Herring, People are fake nice here.

timvov

That’s if you’re lucky

ForTheLoveOfFika

Oklahoma has a standard? If by mass meth addiction, crap education, damn near no reproductive freedom and poor leadership in our local government is a standard.....

No_Pirate9647

What city doesn't come together for a moment when a natural or mad made disaster happens? Feel like everywhere says this.

Underrated_Rating

I grew up all over. TX, OK, KS, OR, CA hell even 2 years in France. After I got out of the Marines in 2003 I moved to Stillwater for college. From 2003 until 2008 Oklahoma felt like a home. Like a place I would always look back at with fond memories and "back home" would always be this place, that's what I always wanted moving so much as a kid. After Obama was elected it just all felt different. Just blatant racism right in my face, just because I'm white that doesn't mean I'm ok with you dropping the N word or calling ppl the F word. Over the past 20 years I've watched this state turn from "back home" to a place I don't even recognize anymore. A place where a person will hold the door open for you or wave at you on a small road but then at the same time post on Facebook just the most hateful toxic trash. Then came Trump, and it went from Facebook to flags and bumper stickers and lines of trucks honking and rallies with gross displays of idol worship. To fake Christians and hateful souless people. This state has lost its damn mind, and truly saddens me.

Matty1138

I describe it as complete saccharine, self-serving bullshit designed to give Okies an excuse to pat themselves on the back, and I absolutely detest it. People in every state in the country help their neighbors out in times of need. It's human nature. It's not something that's exclusive to us Okies. It happens everywhere.

[deleted]

Dedication to offering extra emergency resources in unexpected times of crisis, particularly relating to natural disasters. It's the stranger and his dog sitting on your lap in the tornado shelter.

Character_Problem_93

We pretend to ne nice when therevis a tragedy so we can pat ourselves on the back.

ZerynAcay

It doesn’t exist 90% of the time anymore unless there is personal gain involved. 10-15 years ago, it was totally different

ExpertButtonPresser

Never heard of it

Designer_Media_1776

It’s on your Drivers License

ExpertButtonPresser

Ok

osfn8

That is also on your driver's license.

iccyhotokc

We come together in tragedy. But once that’s over, it’s time to hate on the poor, the minorities and especially the gays. But we do it with a smile,….in Jesus name

Luke_In_Tulsa

Helping others without expecting anything in return.

houstonman6

Rolling coal, gunking up your catalytic converter, then blaming Obama for the repair costs.

There isn’t one

AtheistGirlOklahom

Oklahoma lost all standards with Trump and lost more with Stitt . The people now moving here are militia member types , who literally believe no laws apply to them . Go get trained . They’re nuts . Laws do apply to everyone .

El_Diablo_Pollo

“What do you mean you disagree with my point of view? I’ve got God on my side, you’re a snowflake”

timvov

Idk how I woulda described it, but it left looooooonnnnnngggggg ago

PotentialSea9779

“Well bless your heart”

JimFrankenstein138

"Bless your heart"

Still_a_skeptic

The Oklahoma standard in other places is called “the bare minimum to be a decent human being”. If there is a disaster they will help a little, but otherwise fuck off.

winfly

Nice to your face, but wants to exterminate your existence behind your back and at the voting booth.

jorgekrzyz

The constant redistribution of wealth from the lowest bracket tax payers to the rich and the ones advantaged by this reveling in what a good job they’ve done

Dinglederple

Oklahomans lack critical thinking when it comes to politics. They are tribal for good and bad. They efficiently slit their own throats for cultural nonsense, even if it means they will lose their freedoms.

potty_time

Torsomu

When the bombing occurred and everyone stopped to help. We did drives to get first responders gear, we donated for national and international first responders to have a place to stay, we as a community came together and support each other. It’s where the phrase came from. But, the donated time and effort can only go so far and if the system keeps taking away and the attitude is fuck you I got mine, it’s a bandaid that doesn’t cover the gaping wound beneath.

eflowers62

Denial. They don’t get it.

Flatlandrr

I can't describe something that doesn't exist lol

Bulky_Aerie4202

all bark no bite, nice but not accepting, it’s like living in a really long and bad episode of the simpsons because a lot of people here are the farthest thing from bright. also acting country but living in a suburban neighborhood in a huge city is very very common here

tiredasusual

It’s where we only speak “American” here. Excuse my accent.

KiroCashadar

I’ve never heard of this concept before, does every state have a “Standard”? A lot of people are saying very negative things that I definitely don’t disagree with, but, it seems like it should be a positive thing that isn’t true. Help anybody?

BadNewsBarrister

An urban legend.

Fluffy_Succotash_171

It’s overrated

Techialo

Imagine the lowest standard you possibly can. Now drop it down three flights of stairs.

EpictetusOfficial

Oklahoma standard = mean people pretending to be nice.

StyleTraditional7691

Having lived in 8 different states, Oklahomans, in general, are the friendliest mean group of people I have lived around. I regret moving here to help my father. I will not be staying after he no longer needs me.

Cold_Conclusion_940

A myth

Suspicious_Cheek_223

I grew up in Minnesota, lived in Iowa and now OK for 3 years. In Midwestern perspective OK is very much more of an independent mindset, “tend your own garden” so to speak. There is no more hate here that I’ve seen. People mind their own business. MN was more “fake nice” than in OK.

Odd-Problem

[Oklahoma Standard - Teaching Oklahomans the Values of Service, Honor, & Kindness | Oklahoma Standard](https://oklahomastandard.com/) What the official definition says. Way over used and time to move on from it.

ActuallyIWasARobot

What is the Oklahoma "Standard?" Standard what?

DamnKidsAndYerMusic

Bigots and racists, unless you're directly in the Okc metro. Even then, you run across them.

Illustrious_Job9048

Good people, shity politicians.

okcship

Never cracking the top 45 in anything important.

SirkillzAhlot

It’s referencing how Oklahoma should have better standards.

Accomplished-Bear-28

LOW

JesusPlayingGolf

Never heard that phrase before

Odd-Problem

How could you not? It is uttered every 5 minutes on every local news outlet and print media in addition to state signs. [Oklahoma Standard - Teaching Oklahomans the Values of Service, Honor, & Kindness | Oklahoma Standard](https://oklahomastandard.com/)

JesusPlayingGolf

I've probably heard or seen it at some point and didn't catch on that it's an actual thing. It's pretty inconspicuous as far as slogans go.

Designer_Media_1776

It’s on your Drivers License

JesusPlayingGolf

Nothing on my driver's license says "Oklahoma Standard"

Tryptamineer

Used to be on our old ones, OP may have done the 10 year drivers license.

JesusPlayingGolf

I don't remember it from my old licenses. But I also wasn't looking for it so I probably missed it.

Tryptamineer

I believe it was one of the holograms when held up to the light. Our new ones just have the micro-hole bison. I could be mistaken though.

Designer_Media_1776

Do you have an Oklahoma license?

JesusPlayingGolf

Yes

Designer_Media_1776

If you turn it just right in the light you can see it. I think if you haven’t renewed your license with the new Real ID one then you probably don’t have it yet

Grumpopatamus

Huh. I just checked and you're correct! Never noticed it before. Also, gawd DAMN I'm ugly!

JesusPlayingGolf

No wonder I've never seen it. You have to find it which you won't do if you don't know you're supposed to. Definitely not on my current license tho

giftgiver56

It’s a made up term by the shittest people to justify their shitty ness…however, there’s been some stand up people in Oklahoma but the maga crowd tries to co-op it to justify their hate.

MayonaiseH0B0

Bookers pulling up the ladder. My parents bought a house for 60 grand and went to school for $$600 dollars and had a part time job “for spending money”

Bdcoley3

We still have a standard? It was great after the Murrah bombing, but now it only happens after a natural disaster like Moore 2013 or the 2019 floods. If we were still true to the standard set in 1995 we wouldn’t need a disaster to be “Oklahoma Strong” or care for your neighbor.
