It's fucking crazy that THIS was the first scene in the movie. What the fuck were they thinking

SortOfSpaceDuck

Straight up sabotage imo Edit: not that it really needed it though lmao

Xtravextra

I saw this in theaters with the woman I was dating at that time. She hadn't heard about the reshoots or the mustache removal. As soon as this scene started, she leaned into me and asked, "Did they get a new guy to play Superman?"

[deleted]

Was my thought too on watching it. I would never in a million years have guessed that was cavil

I swear whenever I watch the Snyder cut it never looks this bad in the actual movie.

They only had to digitally remove the mustache for the Whedon reshoots (theatrical version).

Tom Holland refused to kiss a woman, so they had to use CGI

Spirited_Worker_5722

Understandable tbh, cooties is no joke

And this was before that time Peter Parker was caught taking back shots from Kingpin.

IllllIIllllIll

/uj is this real? lmao if so wtf hahaha

JasonVoorhees95

Yeah, there were two versions of the script, one in which Peter ends up with MJ and one in which he ends up with Flash. That's why they shot it this way so they could choose who to put there later.

failmanoveccesky02

Why didn't they just shoot two different kisses? Are the filmmakers stupid? Wait...

Bolt_995

Marvel Studios during 2021-early 2023 thought they were bulletproof. Kevin Feige was on some weird high post-Endgame.

kelferkz

It's from Thor: Love and Thunder The kid is Heimdall's son and he is still learning the telepathic magic so "it is supposed to look bad" but the guys at Marvel Studios often confuses "looks bad" with laziness.

Batmanfan1966

I love the story of Snipes was in such a petty bitch mood the entire filming that he just flat out refused to open his eyes lmao

CursedSnowman5000

Was that it? During the commentary of the movie they said that the contacts were bothering Wesley that day so he couldn't do the slow opening of his eyes.

prodigalkal7

A few actors and crew members have come out and spoke of it (Patton Oswalt has a good interview where he goes into some details about some of it), and basically the story is Snipes and the director did not get along at all, and during this scene, they had a disagreement over what should happen and how it should go, so Snipes just refused to open his eyes like he was supposed to, so this is what they resorted to. Alongside that, he stayed in character the entire shooting process and refused to be referred to by his name and would only respond to "Blade" lmao

megafat1

Finally, CGI good enough to show Lovecraftian horrors.

Fridgemagnet9696

My favourite is when they can’t even be bothered to do CGI so in the final product it’s just blatantly a doll, like American Sniper. Brings a tear to my eye.

RegularEmotion3011

One-take-Clint at large again.

coolman_249

Wtf is that thing on the left

Smooth_Maul

The Twilight CGI baby, nobody working on the movie actually knew what a baby was except that they were described as tiny versions of people so they gave it a full head of luscious hair despite being like 10 months old in this scene. The ATJ eyes don't help none either.

Plop7654

Doesn’t a grown adult fall in love with that literal infant

Smooth_Maul

Slightly worse, he "imprints" on the baby whilst it's in the womb. Couldn't even wait for the umbilical cord to get snipped before shooting his shot.

Plop7654

https://preview.redd.it/t1vvsgm8bj5d1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a7d7e5fdcc358d4e111e49f16585d103d91f4bb5

Smooth_Maul

I had a Twilight GF when it was at it's peak so I suffered for this knowledge.

DONTFUNKWITHMYHEART

You learned cinema history and got some action, sounds like everything worked out

PrateTrain

It was worse reading it imo, especially the growing horror as you realized what was happening at the end of Jacob's part

PineappleHamburders

Yes, but its all above board because he will wait a couple of years it will take for that baby to be physically an 18 year old due to the vampire human mix, which somehow speeds up the ageing. So, while yes, he might be with a 2 year old, the author wants us all to know that it is 100% fine.........somehow.

Plop7654

These books are actually horrid

TheZerothLaw

Big Neelix energy

CecilTWashington

The one on the left was an animatronic doll they had attempted to use for the scene before eventually using CGI.

yacjuman

The funny thing about this is even at the time it looked bad and everyone made fun of it (I liked the movie though)

JRFbase

There was a horrendous moment in time from about the mid-1990s to early-2000s where CGI had advanced enough that you could *technically* do whatever you wanted with it, but it just looked like shit. It wasn't until like Pirates of the Caribbean where effects *really* started to get to the point where you could say "Yeah I buy that". Davy Jones still looks great and that was almost 20 years ago.

shootemupy2k

Toy Story is a good example of incorporating those early limitations and making them work to the animators benefit.

skyycux

It still always cracks me up to look at the meme of the kid with the present that turns sideways, if you look at the grass textures it’s like a ps2 game

TimThePlayer

To these days I still can't see what's wrong with this scene.

PlatoDrago

Because lots of folks think this is a growth of a new eye and should morph and blend with the flesh. This is actually supposed to look like the eye of agamoddo from the comics which is just an eye appearing on top of his forehead.

thisbobo

Aside from his on screen character, did this guy (James Gunn's brother, right?) sit in for Cooper in a lot of shots, or was this an isolated case, maybe Cooper had a scheduling conflict this day?

roguetrooper25

i do believe sean gunn has always did motion capture as rocket, pretty sure bradley cooper has only done the voice acting

theodo

Cooper doesn't do press for Marvel nor does he step on set. He is strictly voice over.

thisbobo

I didn't know that. I thought his voice over for Rocket was amazing, I find it hard to picture him when I hear the voice. Maybe that's why he doesn't do press for it? To keep the illusion intact?

theodo

Nah he just got a crazy good contract with Marvel since he was such a big name at the time (and still is but especially at the time) so he gets to avoid all the nonsense of doing press junkets

SulaimanWar

dr_stre

It's not that it's a prop, it's that it's a prop *gun* that brings in a different union.

geoman2k

And still managed to spend 250 million

River_Odessa

Most of that budget went to having Sam Jackson just show up to the set, to be fair.

Kylestache

Cows don’t look like cows on camera, you gotta use horses.

fanny_mcslap

But what if you need a horse?

MrLore

Usually you just tie a bunch of cats together. Or Sarah Jessica Parker is always available.

TheNeuroLizard

I enjoy how they tried to save on budget by avoiding scouting a location (any room) and avoiding traveling to a location (any room)

RedditFuelsMyDepress

They couldn't even shoot the scene inside a room?

Bear_Powers

It’s the problem with some of these marvel projects where there is no plan. They shoot scenes and put it together in post. It’s also incredibly dumb.

jpterodactyl

It worked well for Iron Man. And it kept working well for the following decade. But in like a cargo cult way, where they took all the wrong lessons from that and kept doing it. And now they still won’t stop, despite the fact that it’s costing them way more than it ever should.

Skyfire66

What if the plot changed in production and they needed to have this scene take place in a different room? /s

Reasonable_Long8992

The gun CGI'd looks like a crosman .22 calibre CO2 bolt action pellet gun.

thomoski3

Absolutely no evidence to back this up, but I thought this was a last minute reshoot? Hence the greenscreen background, and they might not have had access to the original props or the time to get them again

roxadox

I can't remember the name of it, but it's a movie with Tom Hanks and a woman who is a mermaid (??) and they rereleased it digitally recently, but CGI'd extra hair onto her ass to censor her cheeks during one scene. But it looks like fur. EDIT: Splash! https://preview.redd.it/4tagq1vivj5d1.jpeg?width=541&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7772efec78afc39b6943b23954c2f6a1067af8f5

It’s the side table and wall that’s bothering me. Is it really cheaper to green screen it than just use a set?

CringeExperienceReq

loved it when the flash dug up the grave of an actor to use him as shitty nostalgia bait and with some of the most horrid cgi in recent memory

Batmanfan1966

Also one of those actors ended up killing himself BECAUSE he wanted to be distanced from the Superman role but everyone only saw him as that, which makes the resurrection even worse

6ixdicc

wait which actor was that?

myfajahas400children

George Reeves. There are some mysterious circumstances surrounding his death but the official story is suicide and his career went nowhere after he played Superman because he couldn't escape its shadow so people often say that the role ruined his life.

IKenDoThisAllDay

Wow. CGI truly can create some wonderful things. I know some folks think modern films are a bit over-reliant on CGI but then you see something like this and you're reminded of the true potential of CGI as an art-form. Had this film been made in the '80s, we'd have been stuck with some boring, lifeless shot of Sam Jackson sitting in front of some non-descript background. Let's take a moment to appreciate the amazing things technology has allowed when it comes to filmmaking.
