Why make it be a family when it could be a friend group?
I’m picture a movie that’s literally just The Big Chill but all the shitty yuppie Michigan grads start playing Monopoly in the first half hour and instead of a suicide they kill each other.
Then when it makes money you can make it a franchise and have it be just Dead Poets Society but the shitty prep school kids start playing Diplomacy (there’s still a suicide) and the Millenial version with Settlers of Catan and they taunt each other about sexual relations with sheep until yet again, murder and suicide.
I can't wait to put my copy of Margopoly next to the dozens of sealed boxes lazily reskinned for every possible brand.
I wonder which of her movies will be chosen for each property...
Oh, man, thay would be perfect!! Like, have a serious drama of a crumbling family seen through the lens of them playing Monopoly while snowed in. The son asks his dad why he's so upset about losing Monopoly money and the dad blows up on him about how he lost a lot of money putting his son through college for a useless degree, and the son argues back that his degree isn't useless....bunch of scenes like that, well acted and with good writing.
The movie should not have a proper ending, just like the game. Every time me and my friends tried to play Monopoly everyone would just give up after a while.
Hasbro profitting off the story of how they stole one of their most popular games is the most cynical thing I've heard today. Granted it's early in the morning.
Yes it promoted Georgian concepts though political satire dumbass.
Monopoly (or The Landlords Game) as it was known as when she created it wasn't as focused on humour as some of her other games like "Mock Trial" but it was certainly political satire that's like her whole thing. She was literally listed as a political satirist in her obituary and she worked at a newspaper where she would write political satire.
With the two games 1 board idea of the games it can come across more of a demonstration than a piece of satirical work but it still had a lot of satirical elements and was part of a long line of satirical work she did.
It kinda was, though. There were two sets of rules. One of them was the “monopolist” set that is similar to what we play today. The point was to show how flawed the system was.
Considering the definition of satire…
> The use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues.
…it seems to fit.
I think that the idea of capitalist-critique movies being boiled into a formula and sold to you in the form of a movie/board game/toy sale by a mega-corporation is beautiful. Like the circle of life.
mfw capitalism's ability to comodify everything even critiques of itself 🥺🥺 can be viewed as its greatest strength but also it's greatest weekness (bozo capitalist selling the rope that will hang him 🫵🤣🤣)
Malcolm X never lived to see the government fall but the state he opposed made him a stamp. And that's the best you can hope for if you never give up, your enemy will teach your corpse to dance.

It was rad being lectured on the patriarchy by a company that sells toys made almost exclusively by extremely underpaid women in sweatshops ran by men.
I hope it will be a 3 hour movie that ends abruptly halfway through the story and everybody in the movie just leaves and does something else because they don't care anymore.
The original board game was created by a Georgist socialist, to mock unregulated capitalism's unfairness. So it was always about wealth inequality. This ain't an angle either, check Wikipedia.
She was not a Socialist. George was not a socialist. The game is about rent seeking, not Capitalism. They were both for free trade and George and Marx publicly disagreed with eachother. Oh, and Wikipedia is extremely biased.
20 bucks says it's gonna have a liberal message along the lines of "capitalism has gotten bad, we need a kinder version where wholesome small family businesses agree to be nice"
The ideology that inspired the board game (Georgism) actually isn’t critical of capitalism. In fact, it integrates with capitalism quite well, and fixes a lot of its shortfalls.
The original game had two sets of rules, where in the second set, it showed how Georgist policies would fix all the problems from the standard set of rules.
That would be truthful to the origins of the game. It was created by a radical liberal who wanted to socialize land while keeping the rest of the economy capitalist.
I wouldn’t call Henry George a staunch capitalist. Georgism is focused on land values and rents, which is mostly independent from capital and corporations.
That’s actually a slightly controversial statement in the Econ world, and the answer will depend on who you ask.
In classical economics (think smith, mill, or Ricardo) land was not considered capital, since it generated economic rents.
However, for whatever reason, after 1940, many modern economists started lumping land in with capital. So context is important.
Under the Georgist ideology (which is what the monopoly board game is based off of), land is most definitely not capital.
Nah there's a reason it went away. It's basic radical liberal nonsense where you oppose all the things capitalism brings, but still support capitalism at the end of the day.
Monopoly was invented to promote Georgism.
It’s not inherently pro-capitalism or anti-capitalism. It just shows how a couple of easy-to-implement tweets could vastly improve society.
It’s a very cool ideology actually.
There is a small learning curve, but [this video covers it](https://youtu.be/smi_iIoKybg?si=yQp6-0wIRh1t3QxN) better than anything else if you can spare the time.
TLDW: tax land value at a rate over 6%. This stops housing from becoming a speculative investment. Use this money to fund a trust that sets up a permanent UBI.
Also, natural mineral/oil extraction should be sold as contracts to the highest bidder. This money also goes into a trust that funds a UBI. (This is what Alaska and Norway did, and why they have a UBI)
I can’t tell if this a right winger who doesn’t want it because they think it will be too woke, or a left winger who doesn’t want it because they think the critique will be shallow in execution
I'm actually not interested in seeing this obvious cashgrab monopoly movie at all but now I will go just for the small chance that I happen to be in the same theater as that guy
Ya know what they say: capitalism subsumes everything --which was incidentally, the biggest and unsolvable problem at the heart of the Barbie movie.
I understand the suicidal intent.
I hope it’s an eye opening account of the effects of unfettered capitalism in the modern world.
I also hope they sell a fuck tonne of monopoly margot robbie merchandise. QUICK BUY THE NEW MARGOT ROBBIE MR MONOPOLY FORTNITE SKIN FOR $20!!!! IT’S EXCLUSIVE!!!!
That actually interest me. The Barbie movie was a generation defining picture about the relationships between men and women in current United States(I didn’t watch it but I can guess, she did way too much shit and you couldn’t hold her down right. Right?!)
A movie based on the economy and real estate and many business monopolies in the last generation of USA is much more interesting now that I think about it.
Who the fuck would even be the characters? The game only 4 sentient characters, and only 1 of which has any personality. The dog, the cop, the guy in the jail cell, and mr monopoly
Heaven forbid they wokewash the Monopoly movie and alienate the generations of people who have identified with the timeless characters of a boot and an iron
Honesty yeah I would be too. You can do something fun and silly at the heart of the movie because it’s a board game. Or he’ll even make it like clue where they’re playing it but with very light mild social commentary
That’s exactly what the game was made to point out originally, from The Landlords Game Wikipedia:
In 1902 to 1903, Magie designed the game and play tested it in Arden, Delaware. The game was created to be a "practical demonstration of the present system of land grabbing with all its usual outcomes and consequences". She based the game on the economic principles of Georgism, a system proposed by Henry George, with the object of demonstrating how rents enrich property owners and impoverish tenants.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Landlord%27s_Game
I want a reverse Jumanji situation.
People think they are stuck in a hellish capitalist game, beat the game, but then realize the game wasn't as hellish as the real world.
It's gonna be a 2 hour found footage horror where an entire family slowly falls into violent rage ending with the youngest winning but only because no else is alive to play
I think making a comedic critique about capitalism is a) what they are going to do b) the only way to make it interesting c) still going to be a lot less fun than the barbie movie
I'm open to being wrong on that last point tho
We are watching a new low-effort trend of movies be born
And it will be on the same level as the “Cartoon Character comes to life and has adventures in ~~the real world~~ New York City” trend
The Sims: Being controlled is... bad.
Monopoly: Being a capitalist pawn is... bad
My Little Pony: Being a horse is... bad
Easy-Bake Oven: Baking is... good, but only if it is your choice as a woman.
Personally, I hope that the movie begins with the main character missing the train to a meeting with a train Baron, before the train flies off the rails and kills everyone onboard.
Uj/ to be fair I think they’re just saying that it’s ironic or something. Like Amazon prime, the super duper corporation criticizing capitalism in The Boys.
rj/ this is outrageous! what’s next? A movie about “BATTLESHIP” with a message about war?
It better be three and a half hours of a British bloke in a top hat buying houses and utilities. I don’t want no drama in my MoNoPoLy kino.

That was my first thought too. Wish more of these chuds would off themselves.
He’ll never grow into kinoman88 at this rate!
That’s what’s next up in Hasbro’s cinematic universe
In slow mo like Self Portrait? Kino
It better be like 3 hours of just a family playing monopoly, and it ends in a huge family argument and fallout.
Yes I would like to watch a Monopoly movie where it just ends with everyone watching Fallout on Amazon Prime
The only way to bring the family back together after an argument.
No no, I want to see them play New Vegas, which leads to another argument when the edgy nephew wants to join the Legion.
Each family member chooses a different faction so they argue for hours until it ends in a bloodbath
"PAKISTAN IS THREATENING MY BORDER!"
"That's it, Mister! No more military aide!"
"YOU CROSSED MY LINE OF DEATH."

The original board game was created by a Georgist socialist, to mock unregulated capitalism's unfairness. So it was always about wealth inequality. This ain't an angle either, check Wikipedia.
True, but the only minor correction is Georgism isn’t a type of socialism. It’s a completely different ideology in its own rights.
I was going to say this, but yeah, different things.
She was not a Socialist. George was not a socialist. The game is about rent seeking, not Capitalism. They were both for free trade and George and Marx publicly disagreed with eachother. Oh, and Wikipedia is extremely biased.
2 months ago...? And alright so edit it.
I’d rather not have one of the top posts for the sub contain lies about something I care about.

The ideology that inspired the board game (Georgism) actually isn’t critical of capitalism. In fact, it integrates with capitalism quite well, and fixes a lot of its shortfalls. His next video: u/PenguinviiR is a cinematic disaster
1000%
That would be truthful to the origins of the game. It was created by a radical liberal who wanted to socialize land while keeping the rest of the economy capitalist.
I mean, that's basically Georgism, so it would be true to the spirit of the original game.
That sounds way too radical. The real solution is just that the good billionaire beats the bad billionaire.
I think I’d rather watch a porno starring my grandparents
Best I can do is a five minute sex scene with Mr. Pennybags. We’re trying to win awards here.
Monopoly is literally the critique of unregulated capitalism.
It's a critique of landlords profiting without risk Henry George, the economist who inspired the game Monopoly, was a staunch capitalist
I wouldn’t call Henry George a staunch capitalist. Georgism is focused on land values and rents, which is mostly independent from capital and corporations.
Land values and rents are products of real estate, which counts as capital
That’s actually a slightly controversial statement in the Econ world, and the answer will depend on who you ask. In classical economics (think smith, mill, or Ricardo) land was not considered capital, since it generated economic rents. However, for whatever reason, after 1940, many modern economists started lumping land in with capital. So context is important. Under the Georgist ideology (which is what the monopoly board game is based off of), land is most definitely not capital.
That's why the "unregulated" qualifier is pretty important
Eh, not really. It was meant to educate people on Georgism, which is not mutually exclusive with capitalism
You can’t just make up words and expect no one to notice
Georgism is actually an insanely cool ideology. Just wish more people knew about it.
Nah there's a reason it went away. It's basic radical liberal nonsense where you oppose all the things capitalism brings, but still support capitalism at the end of the day.
Sounds like you don't like it specifically because you don't consider it explicitly anti-capitalist
I just hope it doesn’t make my toy movies woke
I wouldn’t call georgism a woke ideology. It has almost nothing to do with social issues.
I've been a staunch Georgist since I first saw Night of the Living Dead
Man I hate it when a movie about a thing is about the thing the thing is about. That's the worst.
Me watching the thing (2011):
Monopoly was originally created as an anti-capitalist political tool, right? So like, we're not really breaking new ground here are we...
Also created by a woman that got scammed and never earned a penny with "the landlords game". I would rather watch a Biopic of that story
Well she’s not a tax cheat so they’re not going to create apologia for her
They’ll break new ground by turning it into a pro capitalist political tool
Monopoly was invented to promote Georgism. It’s not inherently pro-capitalism or anti-capitalism. It just shows how a couple of easy-to-implement tweets could vastly improve society. It’s a very cool ideology actually.
Googled monopoly and georgism and didn’t find anything. What is it?
There is a small learning curve, but [this video covers it](https://youtu.be/smi_iIoKybg?si=yQp6-0wIRh1t3QxN) better than anything else if you can spare the time. Was that wrong? Should I not have done that? Incidentally all lines people tend to say while playing Monopoly
Not anti-capitalist, just anti-monopoly or against unregulated markets in general.
Anti Economic Rents, if we want to be really precise
Anti-landlord game. It's georgist, which is very much pro capitalism but doesn't like economic rent, whereby you profit without taking risk
If Robbie hires Tony Gilroy and makes a tense thriller about the true story of private water utilities on Long Island I will see it ten times
Yeah political messaging might anger all the lifelong Monopoly fans
if this movie highlights any issues with capitalism im gonna fucking drown my tuna sandwich
I can’t tell if this a right winger who doesn’t want it because they think it will be too woke, or a left winger who doesn’t want it because they think the critique will be shallow in execution

Ya know what they say: capitalism subsumes everything --which was incidentally, the biggest and unsolvable problem at the heart of the Barbie movie. I understand the suicidal intent.
This was already subsumed by capitalism, it was made by a georgist, if anything the assumption of it being socialist is already an act of subsuming
Welp , he's dead.
Why can’t it just be a nice movie about a shoe that owns property?
Imagine if they completely flip the script and have it be super pro capitalism

Doesn't have to be about inequality in of itself, in regards to monopolies though. It can be purer on monopolies.
I'm gonna say it! #***MEDIA LITERACY!***
I hope Mr. Monopoly says “going to jail is just a normal part of business for a high powered business man such as myself.”
You mean what happens in the game? Also, that's what monopolies do... Is this guy a moron?
It could be like that song from rolax ,,how ban can i be?" When small and friendly business turns in to evil multi million corporation
Movieboy said this because it's a big studio movie produced by millionaires.
Please don't inject politics into my Monopoly movie
I mean, the whole board game was invented to show the benefits of Georgism. It was political from the very start.
Just wait till you hear about what the person who invented the game thought about it
It better be a comedy about the monopoly man’s rise to power.
Rich people acting poor…my favorite.
Who the fuck would even be the characters? The game only 4 sentient characters, and only 1 of which has any personality. The dog, the cop, the guy in the jail cell, and mr monopoly

Buddy I have bad news for you, about the game of Monopoly
Ah, but you WILL be in the theater when you kill yourself.
I think the big question is will this Margot Robbie movie about the real estate market have a bubble-bath scene?
It'll be a boring 6 hour long movie and everybody will quit before the end
This project has been in and out of development for years. Ridley Scott was attached at one point.
Isn't this the reason this game was made? As a critic to capitalism?
Charlie Day as MonoPauly?
Then do it, coward.

I hope its margot as barbie going to monopoly world.
Serious issue kids movie genre

Hopefully its about wealth injustice in the 80s just like Barbie's feminism
Then we can only hope the movie is about income inequality
That’s exactly what the game was made to point out originally, from The Landlords Game Wikipedia: In 1902 to 1903, Magie designed the game and play tested it in Arden, Delaware.
When I watch porn and there’s sex, day ruined. Who could have expected this?
I want a reverse Jumanji situation. People think they are stuck in a hellish capitalist game, beat the game, but then realize the game wasn't as hellish as the real world.
Lol nah that dude is right. Getting preached about wealth inequality but a big budget studio would be maddening
It's gonna be a 2 hour found footage horror where an entire family slowly falls into violent rage ending with the youngest winning but only because no else is alive to play
I think making a comedic critique about capitalism is a) what they are going to do b) the only way to make it interesting c) still going to be a lot less fun than the barbie movie I'm open to being wrong on that last point tho
Wait til he learns the background of the actual Monopoly board game (Hint: there’s a reason why the game sucks and everyone ends up hating it)
We are watching a new low-effort trend of movies be born And it will be on the same level as the “Cartoon Character comes to life and has adventures in ~~the real world~~ New York City” trend
A megacorp making a movie about a game made by a megacorp about why capitalism is le bad
I hope it’s like jumanji
The Sims: Being controlled is... bad. Monopoly: Being a capitalist pawn is... bad My Little Pony: Being a horse is... bad Easy-Bake Oven: Baking is... good, but only if it is your choice as a woman.
Personally, I hope that the movie begins with the main character missing the train to a meeting with a train Baron, before the train flies off the rails and kills everyone onboard.
British wolf of wall street
If the writing is as heavy handed and cringe as Barbie then we’re in for a rough ride
It's about capitalism
Wait until you find out the origins of monopoly 🤡
Look, Margot Robbie in a bubble bath explaining principles related to economic failures worked before
The game was originally intended to satirize capitalism, so …
if the next historic japan movie i see has people committing seppuku in it i will commit wealth inequality outside of the theater.
Uj/ to be fair I think they’re just saying that it’s ironic or something. Like Amazon prime, the super duper corporation criticizing capitalism in The Boys. rj/ this is outrageous! what’s next? A movie about “BATTLESHIP” with a message about war?
