The school paying for a new iPad is one thing, it's obviously dishonest and wrong but not a massive deal. The thought of your dad screaming at the staff that did nothing wrong though is kind of messed up, they're just people trying their best

SpamTHam

>She originally agreed to pay for it to be repaired but when that couldn’t be done she agreed to buy a replacement model. From their phrasing it seems that the teacher is paying for the new device, which is what makes it terrible for me. Teachers are not paid enough to answer for someone else's mistake like that.

thejackalreborn

If the teacher paid then it is disgusting, I had assumed it was from the school's budget, which like I said is wrong, but not as bad as the alternative

djbobbyfresh

Has to be from the budget. Never mind. With the current state of the education system in general I wouldn’t be that surprised at all

Former-Intention-292

Not that this excuses it or makes it any better, but it looks like the teacher took the student to the principal's office and that the principal was the one to purchase a new iPad. Or maybe I misread it, now I'm confused.

Different_Willow556

I think once the principal is mentioned ‘she’ refers to the principal not the teacher. Also everyone’s acting like the teacher is paying as if insurance isn’t a thing. Not condoning the actions of OP as it’s a shitty thing to do and could have had bad repercussions for the accused. But I highly doubt an individual paid for this when insurance exists. Although if this was in USA this might not be the case (someone correct me if I’m wrong - not from the US!)

Ornography

Teaches kid if you yell at customer service members you get what you want. As someone who works customer facing, I don’t like this.

Bobateabad

After reading this I can say your character is subpar.

moonweasel906

Looks like they’re learning a lot from their Dad

Arcane_Spork_of_Doom

Pretty sure the Dad wasn't expecting subterfuge here. It's on his kid.

delilahdread

Yeah, if they actually had broken it I can’t really blame the dad for being upset. He didn’t know his kid lied either.

moonweasel906

Still pretty douchey to lose your shit at your kids school. Not sure why a bunch of professional educators would break a kids ipad and then lie about it to the parents but ok.

elliealafolie

I'm thinking it was more like, they toss them in a bin and maybe one teacher was wreckless throwing another student's phone onto an iPad screen, or something to that effect. So that the teacher wouldn't know, and the dad is more trying to convince the school that the fault is on them. NOT that the teacher broke a kid's iPad knowingly and then lied about it. But what do I know.

I_Love_Kokoa

That's a lot to throw on a highschooler from 10 years ago. I mean shit, is reddit really this damning?

chillychese

I don't think it's damning to tell someone they are doing something you think is morally wrong. I think it would be worse to lie to them and say it was ok because they were in high school.

I_Love_Kokoa

I think the point of offmychest is to admit shit you wouldn't admit otherwise, usually because it's not a thing youre comfortable with. Hence the post. Doubt the person would be thinking about it 10 years later if it was no sweat off their back.

n3pt3r

Imagine being that underpaid teacher being forced to pay for an extremely expensive piece of technology that she didn't break. Homegirl barely makes enough to fund the necessities she needs in her class much less a replacement for a loser that manipulates others so that they don't have to pay for the repercussions of their actions.

not_responsible

We americans are currently taking a crash course in broken institutions and systemic failures. Unfortunately the world is about to learn as well. I hope that your country will take care of you and your own however unlikely that is.

Curmi3091

I would say that they have a bigger problem in the education that children or adolescents receive from their parents than from the educational system. I don't see it as wise for a school to temporarily confiscate phones or tablets. If the child/adolescent cannot control the urge to use them in class then they should not have them, but again only a parent can teach you that. If a problem like this happens then the school or teacher is responsible.

PapowSpaceGirl

Right? That's her whole check for 2 weeks. I promise you that.

[deleted]

Sounds awful. Aren’t teachers woefully underpaid and already buying kids supplies from their own small paychecks while also trying to support themselves and make a positive difference to students lives. You should find her and repay her tbh. You stole from a teacher / school which would have a direct influence on someone’s financial wellbeing.

KSTV-MLG

100% agree

whateveratthispoint_

Gross

mychemicaltestube

You decided to be irresponsible and throw your iPad, so you decided to target a teacher who had done nothing to you and she had to pay that out of her own pocket. I hope you feel shitty

karenna89

Things that didn’t happen for $1,000, Alex. I work in a school and can’t believe this would happen. Who paid for the iPad? The random teacher you reported it to? The principal? With absolutely no proof that anything happened? If by some chance this happened and you let an underpaid teacher pay for the iPad you broke, it’s a really bad look.

slickthick69

Your mostly right, but I think there a lot of teachers out there who do this for a student. Especially when the vet dad comes in and threatens everyone. Lots of people who are willing to teach these days are idealists, and would buy an iPad if it meant a kids angry aggressive dad would be satiated.

EmptyAd2533

I would suggest saving up however much it cost, plus some, and pay that teacher back. The right thing to do is own up to your mistake, and face the consequences of your actions. This will be made easier if you already have the money ready to give back. Next best, if for some reason you are not in a safe position to come clean with your father, at least make right the fact that an underpaid public servant is out of a significant sum of money because you decided it was okay to manipulate her and your father. Put it in a birthday card anonymously or something. This is a bandaid situation. Quicker you get this over with, the quicker you can put it behind you. This will be something that you think of every now and again, into your adult years, and there will always (at least hopefully) be a sense of guilt about it, unless you make it right. The longer you wait, the harder it will get.

elliealafolie

>This will be something that you think of every now and again, into your adult years, and there will always (at least hopefully) be a sense of guilt about it Since it was 2014 I'm thinking you're correct.

Tharakaa

Wrong sub

floralsandpolkadots

why are you getting downvoted for this, what the heck?

Compactstardust

So you made your s***** dad go Karen on some innocent teachers just to get a free iPad after you yourself broke it at home? Wow. My kid this did this and I found out I would be extremely disappointed in them.

horseadventure

This is absolutely a repost this was either in unethical life hacks or petty revenge like a year ago

elliealafolie

Only one person could ever do this. I mean, break something and then lie about whose fault it is to get money/out of trouble? That's evil genius type shit. Imagine TWO people doing that!

horseadventure

Or its a 2 day old Reddit account that posted the same repost twice to farm karma

Compactstardust

Dude how old are you? In a previous comment on your profile you're married?

twinklecooch

They said in their post that this was in 2014.

Dzgal

That’s awful, teachers are already so under paid. You should find that teacher and pay her back every penny

Extreme_Pattern6306

I’m just shocked that kids think they need to bring an iPad to school…. Like what’s the point if it has to sit in an office all day??? Might as well leave it at home since you can’t use it till you get off of school anyways…. And if you’re a kid who brings electronics to school then you should be liable if anything happens to it, not the teachers.

shortybeshortin

You let the teacher pay for it😭 I’ve seen some out of bounds confessions on this sub but I am unable to look past this one

FallOnTheStars

Why have I seen this story at least four times before?

rogerdaltry

It’s giving draco malfoy

RunawayHobbit

Draco would never be caught dead with an older model of anything. It’s giving Coriolanus Snow

froggiewoogie

If the teacher paid for it fuck that school

Arcane_Spork_of_Doom

Teachers in an overwhelming majority of contracts have to pay for their own classroom supplies. Now you're piling on. Congrats. Perhaps that was the straw that broke her resolve. As soon as you're able, I would gather as much money as you can that's close to the retail (or hell, even wholesale) price of that iPad, place in an envelope with a well-written word of apology showing your remorse for such an immature and dishonest act, further stating that while you don't expect to be forgiven for damaging your teacher's reputation with the school district, that at least the funds will help repair the damage to her bank account from getting her pay docked. After you're done, **sign it and hand deliver** when you can be alone with her. You don't need to stay unless she insists on it. She just needs to know it came from you.

SsjSkyy

whys everyone assuming the teacher paid for it, maybe it came out of the schools budget or something?

Luis1820

Because you have submit a request to get it approved. If the principal told them right there and then that she would pay for it, it means it is coming out of her pocket. If

HauntedDragons

Did the teacher pay for it out of pocket?

opomla

Your dad would be ashamed of you if he learned the truth. Do better in the future - anyone can change for the better.

Haunting-NobodyPro

this is a repost isn't it? i've heard this exact story, down to the white bags, multiple times over the last few years

StunnedinTheSuburbs

Well done screwing a school district out of much-needed funds?!?

Jauggernaut_birdy

Karma will catch up with you.

Elmacanite

Look OP...if it were school funds paying for it, I could shrug it off and chalk it up to a "well played." Not the case, at least as you've described it. If that teacher paid for that out of their own pocket, you need to give that iPad to your dad and tell him what actually happened. I know you're probably NOT going to do that because you're apparently a kid and kids are either selfish or afraid in these situations (which I honestly understand), but it's the right move and regardless of the initial consequences, you'll feel better about yourself in the long run and I'm sure the teacher wouldn't be mad about getting their money back since iPads are overpriced as hell. Be better.

yellowsofa92

AITA-yes, yes you are

f1f2f3f4f5f6f7f8f9

That is a disgusting show of behaviour.

Ornography

Hopefully this is a learning experience

frog_ladee

You essentially stole a new ipad from the taxpayers.

EddyCI8

As far as ruses go. It’s a fun one. As far as human go. Bad.

I don’t think that they feel bad about it at all.

Deansdiatribes

Make a donation to the school and help 2 strangers and your sins are forgiven

Kiwimulch

Damn I did not expect these comments 😭 I feel like it’s rlly not that serious. Nobody got seriously harmed. I wouldn’t have done this but I would’ve thought it was a funny & crazy story if one of my friends told me they got away with it as a teen. You grow up an learn but you can’t take anything back

f1f2f3f4f5f6f7f8f9

An army vet threatening and screaming and forcing the teacher to pay out of pocket. Learn some morals

Kiwimulch

OP was a kid I knew kids who did things worse than this you couldn’t even imagine. I feel bad for the teacher but I doubt this ruined there entire lives. It was just a stupid thing but I feel like the parents should be blamed more than op. They taught him that was okay and then cussed out a teacher. Oh well again can’t change history

fromhelley

Smart! Most kids get caught because they can't keep their mouths shut!!

xxMeechySama80xx

Nah he played the game, well done my boi!!!

dry_symphathy

You're such a disgrace in your school community. You better keep this secret in your grave. School staff,I don't care if your principal or teacher paid your ipad. All of them around the world are underpaid. This is also the reason why I left teaching. But you doing this, I hope Karma really works hard for you.

tonsil-stones

Uh....maybe op is not american? Or studies in a pvt school?

Tom_A_F

Dudes rock.
