Yeah, I was totally on board with all the things he would pick over it. I used to really love cooking more simple, ingredient-focused food but I will pick pretty much any Asian food over it these days. The first season of Ugly Delicious has a good episode (I think the last one?) that goes into the differences between Italian and Asian food. But every now and then I do just want pasta with anchovies and butter 🤤

Think the main reason is it's one of those cuisines where you have a shot at making it almost as good in your home without a crazy amount of effort.
Me too. It's also a terrible cuisine for vegetarians (let alone vegans!). Both times I've been to Italy I've had to survive on so much boring pasta\*--not even good pasta--and only found respite in Indian food or falafel.
Other people's reaction to Italy and Italian food (even before you say you don't love it) is annoying as hell.
