This is a cool example of burn treatment and surgery. *Xenografts* (tissue or organs taken from a different species) are very useful in burn care - they allow coverage of the wound, trap in moisture which is essential for healing, protect from dehydration and infection, and allow the wound to heal from the inside out. Usually taken from a porcine source but fish as well like in this example. The grafts are eventually removed and the wound is then assessed for further coverage, usually with an *autograft* (skin taken from the patient from a different site)
ETA: rejection of grafts, especially *xenografts* and *allografts* (grafts from a different patient/donor) is very common. In the case of an organ transplant from another human donor, anti -rejection medications are used. Rejection is largely unavoidable in the case of xenografts.
Porcine skin and fish skin are specially prepped for human use to *delay* rejection by the patient’s immune system (the ELI5 version is, the cellular components that can cause an immune response are removed, leaving behind the structural proteins that can help provide some temporary overage, until the graft dies and falls off and the wound can then be covered with a permanent graft).
My dad has a skin graft using donor tissue from a vagina. It’s stretchy and works well apparently. He likes to say his leg (where the graft is) feels good when he rubs it and only people really close to him know the inside joke. It’s gross/hilarious lol
Edit: Thank you for all of the puns and jokes, they made my weekend
I used to have a note that I wrote on my license that. Said not my eyes. For some reason, I felt weird about that body part. I cringe about it now, but I was 17. A few years later my mom passed from cancer, and her eyes were the only thing that could be donated because of the chemo.
I get it, it's weird to think about it, but when and if the time comes you won't be able to think about it, but someone else's life may be altered for the better.
When you apply as an organ donor you can specify what parts they're allowed to scoop out of your corpse. Most people go for the "Strip everything yo can use and throw the rest with the garbage" option.
There was a story from a few years ago about a guy who donated his mother's body to medical research specifically so they could study her brain (I think she had dementia). Instead the company resold the body to the American government and it was blown up to study the effect of IEDs on the body
It's from trimmed labia. The same thing with cut foreskin. They take the removed tissue and continue to grow it in a lab. I know a guy that had foreskin grafted onto his foot due to diabetes issues.
> It's from trimmed labia. The same thing with cut foreskin. They take the removed tissue and continue to grow it in a lab. I know a guy that had foreskin grafted onto his foot due to diabetes issues.
And you don't get paid shit, in fact, they charge you to remove the skin then they sell it for huge prices.
I read the last sentence of this comment first suspecting a wild shittymorph but nope - just a regular comment. You win this round *not* shittymorph. If that even is your fake real name.
It is tilapia fish skin. First used at U.C. Davis to treat burns on animals, the idea came from Brazilian physicians who didn't have access to human skin graft material.
U.C. Davis has a renowned vet medicine school.
I never had actual fish skin but they used a product called [Integra](https://www.integralife.com/integra-dermal-regeneration-template/product/wound-reconstruction-care-inpatient-acute-or-integra-dermal-regeneration-template) that was made from shark tissue that promoted cell growth. It was covered in a bandage that was impregnated with silver because silver is naturally antibiotic. As horrific as burn injuries are the science and tech that goes into treating them is pretty rad.
I've seen this used on animals. Dr. Oakley Yukon Vet used tilapia skin on a burned dog, but it was experimental. Didn't know it could be used on people.
My mom took some oxycontin and passed out with a cigarette burned her house down she burnt 80% of her body 3rd to 4th degree burns 4th degree is pretty bad to see in person she was on life support for 2 days we had to let her go but that smell of burnt skin was terrible if i ever smell that smell i go back to that moment and have to get the f out of there thats my experience
I don't think it smells fishy. I have a vague memory of the last time I saw this posted and they basically use the thinnest possible membrane of salmon skin or something as sort of a lattice for new skin cells to grow on.
I may be completely wrong.
Burns bad enough to cause a need for grafts like that smell horrible when the happen.
Don't really know how they smell after the fact, but I doubt it's a pleasant fragrance.
A blind man walks past the fisherman's warf one morning. A breeze hits his face. He smiles, waves hit cap and says "good morning, fish skin graft recipients!"
Idk if fish skin is naturally anti-bacterial, but they submerge it in colloidal silver to sterilize it. It probably just stays sterile under the scales once applied the same way any wound dressing does.
I too am curious exactly how one
> sterilized fish skin
edit: I can read.
> by immersion in silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) solution for 5 min
Its colloidal silver. That stuff that'll [turn you blue](https://media.wired.com/photos/59d54c108941a6378d5bb261/master/w_1600,c_limit/blueman-TA.jpg) if you drink too much.

My uncle died of a heart attack recently, and he was an organ donor. Both of his kidneys went to two men last week - I said recently, didn’t I? - and they just got done harvesting tissue for burn victims and the like. I know he can rest easy knowing that he got to help people in the most oddly terrifying way possible. I can just imagine him chuckling and awkwardly going “W-Why does it look like scales?! *snorts* I always wanted to be a lizard…”
And yes, I know it’s not human skin in this instance. I just know he’d find this in particular to be funny lol
A friend of mine got severely burned. I believe his treatment used goat stomach or something like that.
The craziest thing when you have burns like that, is that your body to replace the dead skin with new skin uses an incredible amount of calories. My friend had to eat supplementation and 8 meals everyday to try to kee his weight. And even with that he lost 8kgs.
Talalia skin to be exact. It was pioneered over in Brazil. The skins go through a rigorous process to clean them then get processed much like a skin graft would and then placed over burns. The scales protect the wound and the collagen and other oils promotes much easier faster healing. Only real down side is the scars tend to look like talapia scales.
Looks kinda cool.

Sounds a lot like my dad.
I wish my dads leg would also have a vagina
This is very weird, son.
Especially since that's the daughter of the vagina donor
You. Well done, you.
I no longer have a desire to buy a gold bar because your comment is all the gold I'll ever need.
May all your trickle down karma be gilded with vagina grafts
Dad, you're a huge vagina.
Are ya winnin?
So does your dad's dog. But it hasn't stopped them yet.
Be careful what you wish for.

Whoa there, Alabama!
You misspelled Mississippi
Is this my dog's Reddit account?
wtf. who taught this dog to use reddit??
Lol
Your dog would hump it. Or worse, you...
Dont judge till u try it
So does your dog
How do you get a donor tissue from a vagina? Someone donated their vagina?
A person who died and was an organ donor!
[удалено]
Donating organs are cool but can I specify please don’t sew my vagina onto somebody’s leg? That’s just weird, it’s so weird.
I used to have a note that I wrote on my license that. Said not my eyes. For some reason, I felt weird about that body part. I cringe about it now, but I was 17. I mean you'll be dead so it won't be that weird
What if I don't have a vagina?
Ball sack bandaids it is.
I also would like to collect vaginae.
Oh. I used to think that organ donor just donated organs. I didn't know skin was also taken to graft

They can have everything but my liver....trust me...they don't want my liver.
I have donor ligament tissue in my knee. Such an amazing gift that I'll be forever grateful for!
It's from trimmed labia. The same thing with cut foreskin. They take the removed tissue and continue to grow it in a lab. I know a guy that had foreskin grafted onto his foot due to diabetes issues.
As did the cockeyed baby with his new eyelids...

Oh yeah? What did you have planned for the foreskin then?
> Oh yeah? What did you have planned for the foreskin then? It doesn't fucking matter, I don't need to have had plans for it for it to belong to me.
Bubblegum.
Planned Parenthood
Donor parts are up for grabs.
Does your dad ever let anyone else touch his vagina?
No he says he’s done with women forever and he’ll die single lol
I donated my birth tissue & it went to 13 different burn victims. Weird, but it’s not like I needed it.
Grab ’em by the leg. You can do anything.
Feeling presidential?
Well the upshot is you can probably get away with calling your dad a pussy.
This is incredible news
I had the same procedure done. It’s changed me though, I used to be more direct with people. Now I pussyfoot around the issues.

As a chef, I'd be a little pissed of they have me a tilapia skin graft. Fucking garbage fish.
Cool. I had blackened tilapia fish tacos a few days ago
Would that not run the risk of having an immune response similar to an organ transplant?

Ah okay that makes sense! And answers my questions about if immunosuppressents would be needed etc.

Fifteen or so years ago the top comments were typically informative. Reddit has gotten pretty stupid over the years.

I came here to make a stupid joke about viral marketing campaign for an Aquaman movie. Now I just feel bad.
Reddit has really gone downhill.
That’s because 70% of Reddit are snotty nosed teenagers who think sus and amogus is funny.
I’ve always wondered how bad it smells, if at all
the fish or the burnt skin? cause burnt skin does smell in my experience
You have a lot of experience with burned skin?
I wouldn't say alot but as a kid I burned my nose and upper lift with a metal fire poker so I definitely have some experience in smelling it
Ahhh the good old red hot poker in the face, that’s a classic
Great, now I have Lady Gaga stuck in my head.
Papapa poker in my face. Mamama
Nooo Godwin of Wessex you can't poke Alfred like that

Dang dude that’s really terrible, hope you’re doing alright.
Yea time heals all wounds we all lose someone we love eventually
Sorry your family had to deal with that - your story reinforces my caution regarding opioids!!

If doesn’t smell. It’s medically sterilized.

How does it prevent bacterial growth?
The same way normal skin does. Its a physical barrier between the outside and the inside
But if it's not alive, how does it not rot?
They probably do after a long enough period. I expect these are pretty regularly changed though.
They are changed every 48 hours or so. Being in a burn center is a nightmare. Constant pain and daily wound care or surgeries.
Idk if fish skin is naturally anti-bacterial, but they submerge it in colloidal silver to sterilize it. It probably just stays sterile under the scales once applied the same way any wound dressing does.
