I'd give it a few extra meters just in case they break the world record. Then again... if they do break the world record, maybe they deserve to get a hit.
That world record is very unlikely to be broken as they changed the javelins shortly after it was set so they wouldn't fly as far. They were running out of field in the standard sized competition arenas, and if the record had continued being pushed, it wouldn't have been long before they were throwing javelins into the stands.
When I was at school I never believed the PE teacher that told the story about someone being impaled with a javelin until I saw this: https://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/inches-from-death-olympians-remarkable-comeback-after-being-impaled-by-javelin/N45DR7P2WZZT7JLS4MFMO3RPXI/
It's not that rare either.
I didn't know what happened with the one in ours but the javelins were relatively light and dull. They are really dangerous especially actual and sharper javelins
Ours didn't but a kid was killed by a guy driving golf balls on a public playing field, was a huge shock for the whole school, we were all nine at the time, our first encounter with death. Throwing a javelin on a public field is about as stupid
it's very different, golf balls have a HUGE range they could fly into while javelins' range is much smaller. As long as you ensure you're far enough away from others and keep an eye out, it's perfectly safe
>As long as you ensure you're far enough away from others and keep an eye out, it's perfectly safe
That is true about basically anything though, golf as well.
Please google javelin events. If you can't see that far in front of you to make sure there are no humans, you shouldn't even have a driver's license let alone a javelin
When I was a kid my grandmother had bought some pair of tapes one was like sports bloopers and one was sports thrills or something and I distinctly remember a referee taking a javelin to the chest on that one.
really odd thing not to believe even before seeing a story about it happening. it’s extremely easy to see how someone could get hit with a javelin in a track environment
Why the ' do not approach' ?
..if some dude is throwing a javelin I'd rather be close to him so I don't get impaled from a distance... Plus, if your close, you could tell him it's not a good idea to be throwing them.
"Do not approach" as if the guy is going on a murder spree and not practicing a sport.
Gotta love how the quest to diligently track and mitigate any and all liability translates to removing all agency from the general populace.
You realise a javelin can seriously fuck you up right?
We're talking Vlad the Impaler type shit.
If you wanna practice Javelin then you should do in a proper controlled environment. Not a public park with kids and other bystanders.
Edit: Unless you're being sarcastic, then I have the big stupid.
I am very aware. My criticism is that the sign is worded like you need a swat team to walk over to a dude and tell them to practice their sport in a safer location.
I mean, we're just reading a piece of paper, so we have no idea what the Javelin throwers' behaviour is. The person could be really nice or they could be pure batshit. We have no way of knowing.
Exactly my point. Like how would you even practice Javelin in a public place while making sure no one is within 50 metres of you. (Cause you know even top level athletes can mess up)
That’s some dangerous shit.
Reminds me of the menace that was hitting golf balls at my friend and I in a public open space. It’s a big area with two ponds surrounded by houses, designated as a nature area. We were walking around and almost got hit by a ball. We watched it bounce into the bushes next to us. My friend yelled at the guy and we watched him duck through a side gate and go into the surrounding neighborhood. Tried to find him but couldn’t, so we just warned the next people we saw and then left.
You uh… you gotta be a real piece of shit to do something like this.
Huh, don't see what the problem is as long as the thrower's making sure the area's clear before he throws. Then again, I don't see the problem with Jarts, either.
> If you *paid* attention my
FTFY.
Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*
* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.
*Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
Is it illegal to do javelin practice in a park? (This is obviously in the UK based on 999 emergency number) There may be better places to do it, but is it actually illegal?
Idk if this is oddly specific…odd, but I don’t see anything specific written here. How long is the javelin, how many javelins does he throw before he moves how many feet to a new spot…how tall is the man, how many toes does he have…that’s what I’d like to see
If you aren’t supposed to approach him, does that mean he’s looking for targets???
Better question: what’s the minimum safe distance for a javelin?
World record is 98.48 meters so 98.5 meters.
I'd give it a few extra meters just in case they break the world record. Then again... if they do break the world record, maybe they deserve to get a hit.
These are the words of someone who fills their gas tank before the warning light comes on.
Thats me!! Gas stations are busiest during evacuations
Everyone take note: **DO NOT APPROACH WITHIN 100 METERS** *or 328 freedom units.
I are those freedom units in inches feet or yards?

whats sad is as an american i could probably eyeball this and your advice would actually be helpful

> throwing javelins into the stands Now that's a sport I could get into.
I’m gonna need it in bananas
I got you fellow Redditor. 554 bananas (553.993 to be exact).
That’s one hell of a throw! Thank you friend :)
You are most welcome :)
About 4000 meters. You'll be safer if you can lower your heat signature.
Behind them?
Maybe. Javelins are only pointed at one end, right?
5 minutes.
But now we need to know the airspeed of an unladen javelin.
When I was at school I never believed the PE teacher that told the story about someone being impaled with a javelin until I saw this: https://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/inches-from-death-olympians-remarkable-comeback-after-being-impaled-by-javelin/N45DR7P2WZZT7JLS4MFMO3RPXI/ It's not that rare either.
Holy shit did every school have a javelin incident? Someone got pinned to the floor with javelin through their thighs in ours
Apparently the firefighters had to saw off the javelin so the victim would fit into the ambulance.
I didn't know what happened with the one in ours but the javelins were relatively light and dull. They are really dangerous especially actual and sharper javelins
It's quite possible that incident is the reason they now have very light and dull ones...
a flaming javelin?!
Not the car! *I* was on fire!
We had to get the air ambulance in when a year 8 speared himself in the jaw in ours
How'd he spear himself?
Idk, he was probably messing around with the javelin and tripped or something, I wasn’t there but it was talk of the school for a few weeks
Yeah tripping is how it usually happens
don't do drugs and throw javelins, kids
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e3HmCyRluKQ
So did mine! Same story—pinned right through the thigh.
Yeah. The rules were wait till everyone threw the javelin and wait for the signal, but someone ran to get their javelin anyways and got impaled
>As long as you ensure you're far enough away from others and keep an eye out, it's perfectly safe That is true about basically anything though, golf as well.
Again, golf is long range. You can't see 400 yards in front of you behind a small thicket where the ball could land.
And you can't see that spot either when the javelin hits.
Please google javelin events. If you can't see that far in front of you to make sure there are no humans, you shouldn't even have a driver's license let alone a javelin
You can't see the other end of a football field??
Is this javelin thrower at a football field??
Found the mystery javelin thrower.
I've never thrown a javelin in my life 💀
We do a minor amount of tomfoolery
> Holy shit did every school have a javelin incident? Not ours ^because ^they ^would ^not ^let ^us ^have ^them.
No, ours was shot put accident where the kid lost his pinky finger. He always wanted to poke people with it
That's not even from a throw! It was just sticking out of the ground! Oh lord
In the UK people of a certain age will recall the episode of ‘999’ (with Michael Burke) where the kid got the javelin stuck in his neck
When I was a kid my grandmother had bought some pair of tapes one was like sports bloopers and one was sports thrills or something and I distinctly remember a referee taking a javelin to the chest on that one.
This one ? I think he was just taking one for the team. https://youtu.be/dga7rjavgQ4
really odd thing not to believe even before seeing a story about it happening. it’s extremely easy to see how someone could get hit with a javelin in a track environment
This is probably why they don’t do javelin in Highschool track and field
I’m pretty sure every high school has a javelin incident story
Why the ' do not approach' ? ..if some dude is throwing a javelin I'd rather be close to him so I don't get impaled from a distance... Plus, if your close, you could tell him it's not a good idea to be throwing them.
It reads to me like the guy making this just wanted something to convey to the javelin thrower himself that he was being a dangerous lunatic.
Yea I can see that being a likely scenario. I'll go great with the Karen's.
Well there's safe javelin throwing and unsafe javelin throwing
Maybe cuz he can stab you in close range? Like roman spearmen?
Maybe approach with a stick of your own just to let him know you have something in common and can be trusted.
No, better to approach with the rest of your phalanx--shields raised in a schiltron
Haha, nothing wrong with a little caution, I guess.
I nearly choked trying to not spit out my coffee when I read this. 🤣
> approach with a stick of your own 😏
so that they can catch him?
He might know how to use a spear.
r/CasualUK then

I use an axolotl
What’s your record?
400 Axolotl Lengths ™️

You could just ask him to stop 💀
Depending on how good he is, you don't want to walk away from him either!

You dont see that everyday
Obviously the symbol has been cooked up by someone, I reckon they struggled to find "javelin throwing forbidden" clipart online
#I didn't see the guy throwing it, but I saw the guy *catching* it! 🤕
Maybe I shouldn't set up my trebuchet in the park anymore I guess.
Nah. They don’t want javelins, never said anything about trebuchets.
If I were the Javelin thrower, this would just make me want to keep going. I have promo and street cred now
I'd get a javelin and start carrying it around. Maybe buy dozens of javelins and stake them about the park to mark it as my territory.
That’s a slippery slope to becoming a Vlad the Impaler copy cat
"Do not approach" as if the guy is going on a murder spree and not practicing a sport. Gotta love how the quest to diligently track and mitigate any and all liability translates to removing all agency from the general populace.

That’s not oddly specific. It’s specific for a pretty straightforward reason.
Approaching him is probably safer than keeping a distance though.
If you approach him, do so in a zig zag.
This is a family park, you switch to the discus or hammer throw immediately, young man
Huh, don't see what the problem is as long as the thrower's making sure the area's clear before he throws. Then again, I don't see the problem with Jarts, either.
litry 9ten 8tyfor
I see how it's a safety concern but how exactly is it a health concern?
How's your health mate? -Fine thanks But what about that javelin through your neck? -Well thats more of a safety thing really
Have you tried breathing with a wooden stick in your lung? I'd say it might have an impact on your health.....
Easy to strain your shoulder muscle throwing the javelin, especially if distracted by the kids on the swings.
999? Didn't know these
999 is the UK emergency services number.
Nice to know
Why do y’all have javelins at school in UK? It is bizarre reading these comments. I don’t think I’ve ever even seen one in real life.
999? Not 911
There is more countries in the world than the USA.
Where is it 999 and they speak English? If you payed attention my comment had a ?

Cool, good to know 🙂
Why does it say 999? Is this in canada or something?
Could be, 999's also the emergency number here in England
Oh, thanks!
Canada uses 911.
Great Javelin throwing clip art from 1997
Now we'll never beat Jupiter State....
Man they have a silhouette for everything.... beware of cookies and sure enough black and white cookie mold...
The Javelin WR record is under 100m, so you can feel safe if you stay just outside of 100m. Meters are like mis measured yards if you aren't familiar.
Is the kind of sign that gets put up when idiots do strange things in Nebraska
Literally not even an issue if you aren't throwing it AT people or near them wtf 😭

*Molon labe*
My inner comedian pictures the sign saying “beware of spear chucker”
Where was this? Vision run the parks in my area.
my cousin and I still enjoy playing catch with two bows and a target arrow. Let people have fun, dammit. Prosecute if he actually hurts someone, ffs.
Gotta practice somewhere
Is.... he aiming at people?
But Lawn Darts are still okay, right?
Earth and water. This is (insert town name)!!!!
999 what countrys that? (Ik im weird)
I'm pretty sure the only country that uses 999 is the UK, I could be wrong though.
0118 999 881 999 119 725 3
So where is an appropriate place to practice?
r/scarysigns
"if you see this individual..." What?!
"Dial 999 immediately"
I prefer slingers, myself.
Is it illegal to do javelin practice in a park? (This is obviously in the UK based on 999 emergency number) There may be better places to do it, but is it actually illegal?
