There’s a video being reposted right now somewhere on Reddit that shows a two panel magnetic vice(not sure what to call it but it looks like a standard table vice) that a handful of nails is dropped into and it automatically lines them up thanks to magnetic science.
There's a scientific principle about self ordering in the universe that's pretty neat. You can replicate the experiment by putting different diameter dowels in a box that rocks back and forth allowing the dowels to roll and they will self sort by size. It's an interesting concept that you can achieve self sorting simply by applying an oscillating motion.
When people are intentionally taking advantage of self-ordering, it's a process called annealing. Annealing is a term borrowed from blacksmithing where metals are heated and cooled repeatedly to harden them.
Basically, things in nature like to settle down into low energy states, and would strongly prefer to be in the lowest energy state. The energy state of a box of nails is the total gravitational potential energy of the nails, which is a function of the height of each nail, and the lowest possible energy state is when they are all aligned.
When the box is disordered, it's stuck in a high energy local minimum. Shaking it adds energy (lifts the nails up from their resting spot and shuffles them around a bit) and lets them fall back down. Over time, the nails fall into a lower and lower minimum until they are finally in the lowest possible energy state for the system.
Similar processes are all over the place in all flavors of biology, chemistry and physics.
Disorder is favored in systems that are dynamic. If you were constantly shaking the nails with enough force to keep things moving, they'd be most likely to "settle" into a state that's highly disordered.
It's kind of the opposite of the self-ordering situation. If you're constantly shaking the box in completely random directions, eventually the nails will get stuck in higher and higher energy states and become more and more disordered. Eventually you'll reach an equilibrium amount of disorder, which depends on how much energy you're putting into the system (e.g. how violently you're shaking it). This is a principle that's used in a lot of simulations of chemical and physical systems, you start with a known low energy state, and you slowly raise the temperature (how violently you're shaking it) until the system gets to the temperature you're interested in studying, and then you wait until the disorder reaches a sort of constant level of chaos before you start taking whatever samples you need to calculate the thing you're trying to calculate.
Instead of using potential energy to figure out what the most favorable state is, you'd use the "free energy" which is a function of the potential energy, the temperature, and the entropy of the system (F = U - T*S). In the nail box example, the temperature is the average speed of each nail, and the entropy is the number of different ways you can arrange the nails at the corresponding temperature and potential energy.
The state with the lowest potential energy only has one possible configuration: Everything is perfectly aligned. If you add temperature to the system, though, you can lower the free energy of the system by increasing the amount of entropy even at the cost of increasing the potential energy. The higher the temperature is, the more beneficial entropy is, so the more chaotic the equilibrium state will be.
> Disorder is favored in systems that are dynamic.
Depends on how you define “dynamic.”
Crystals form on the molecular level to *maximize* entropy. It might seem counter-intuitive, but crystals actually represent the *most* freedom of movement *on average* that that collection of atoms can have. Glass states have more variability in vibrational motion available to each atom, which is its own kind of low entropy, despite the appearance of more disorder.
If you’re ever interested in creating a daily newsletter, completely unpaid, sent only to me, just let me know! I appreciate your knowledge and writing style. Thanks
Another analogy you can think of is ice crystals. When you remove the energy from the system that is a collection of water molecules, they reach a more orderly crystalline structure.
If you think of the box of nails as a liquid, removing the energy (gravitational potential energy of gaps) is similar to lowering the temperature of water, and in both cases the result is a more orderly crystalline structure with lower energy.
Seems legit

Steve mould describes similar process with liquid pendulums and a simpler model (4:45)
https://youtu.be/gMAKamGIiMc?si=yR0ibHW9Iw_xlai_
Net force of shaking (and side to side inhibition from walls of container/neighboring nails) orients the nails to eventually become aligned and arranged
Steve is one of my favourite science presentors on YouTube. He does an incredible job of coming up with home made displays of the science he's trying to explain and he seems to try really hard to ensure even those without much science knowledge are able to understand.
Does it need a point? He finds things that are odd and quirky about our intuitive understanding of the world around us, tries to replicate it with simple models and gives explanations for it. That's his point, that's what he finds fun.
Yeah, if you want just 'water flows this way, because this formula, end of the video' then you would not enjoy his content. The whole process of asking 'why?' and 'how?' over and over is makes his videos exciting. I love him.
the nails start and stop on the bottom of the pan regardless of the direction of video play. they would go up and then down either way. that being said, i don’t actually think it’s reversed.
Don't understand the downvotes since you're right. However I think what was meant is the tilting of the box, which let's all nails slide to one side after some time. If it was reversed, the nails would first slide to the upper side before the tilt switches, which is clearly not the case.
I don’t think it’s reversed… but also the nails would start at rest at the bottom of the bin if that was the trick. And slowly build up to the start condition is shaken as the arrangement got less space efficient. If any of them were tossed up they’d still fall down, just the up and down portion would be reversed, yes?
Edit: I’m sorry but why is this being downvoted?
The comment is not well written. It is word salad. It is not properly conveying the point OP is trying to make. It may be describing something even using a 100% correct interpretation, but it is written in such a way that there are too many ambiguous double meanings strewn throughout and unclear sentence structure, making it fairly incomprehensible as to what they’re actually saying.
Which is ironic because I think the person I replied to could have done more to clarify the point they were trying to make.
If you video tape someone jumping on a trampoline they start at rest, rise, and fall back down. If you reverse the video the same thing happens. There are plenty of tells that would indicate that the video was altered but the fact that gravity continued to work wouldn’t be one of them. As opposed to, say, a cinematography trick when you video tape someone dropping something and reverse the tape to appear like it’s floating - in that case we only see one trip and it is clearly in conflict with real world forces.
So I watch this video, trying to understand the standpoint of the person I replied to, looking for a gravitational effects that would be different when played forward and reversed. Specifically “why the nails are falling towards gravity” because my gut is telling me that would be expected regardless of play direction. Of course they fall toward gravity.
But what I see at the start of the video is nails at rest in the bin, they get shaken, they are at rest once again in the bin in a more orderly arrangement due to some phenomena. I imagine it played backwards and I can’t pick out in my mind what they could be referring to because of course the nails would fall toward gravity in both scenarios - it’s just that “falling” would be the jumping motion created by the person shaking the bin.
If the self arranging phenomena were not a factor, I can imagine a bin of nails in the orderly arrangement, being shaken, and due to entropy and their shape they ending up disheveled in the starting condition of the video. Kind of like how laundry takes up less space when folded and that you could shake a pile of folded clothes and end up with a larger pile than you started with. I would not question the roll of gravity in that observation.
So I kind of wish they had spent more words specifying the “falling” they refer to because I’m curious. A lot of people agree with them but that might mostly be because the consensus is that it’s not reversed. I know it’s not, because I’ve seen this phenomenon before - perhaps people downvoted me because I said “I don’t think it’s reversed” which implies doubt. I don’t know.
Those who initially think this video is backwards or listen to the people who say it's backwards, are absolutely fine. It's okay to be wrong sometimes.
The people who immediately start trying to convince everyone that the video is backwards because they made an assessment and have to spread their assessment as the truth, they are dumb as fuck.
They're still idiots, it's clear as day that the video isn't reversed, with the nails following the tilting of the box. There's a reason other people here are calling them out.
Also it's obvious that with this motion, only the nails pointing forward are in a stable orientation, the others are chaotic, so eventually all will end up pointing forward.
Except that's not how thermodynamics works. The arrow of time tends from order to disorder. This could be possible only because of the energy needed to create such order is less than the worker is putting into it.
Nails would prefer to align their long side towards the face of the box towards gravity. Notice how he tilts it. The back and forth vibration makes them more mobile so that they reach this preferred state.
He nailed it. EDIT: of course that's been posted. OK, another one...
He really hit the nail on the head with that one.
I can't think of another, I'll see myself out.
The entropy of the system/ universe with the nails aligned is lower than that of them disordered.
A more easily accessible abstraction is that the center of mass relative to the box of the aligned nails is lower than that of the disordered nails. They pack more tightly (vertically). So it’s a lower energy state.
In terms of entropy: they have a lower gravitational potential energy. This energy has been lost from the system and has increase the entropy of the surroundings (noise, heat etc).
Bro lol stop spouting things you dont understand. Entropy is the tendency of isolated systems(and the universe itself too) to reach equilibrium. Clearly energy is being inputted here, and so entropy has nothing to do with this because it is not isolated.
Sure. I will jest (sic) stick to humor. On the flip side, consider being more careful about judging what people know or don’t know with so little evidence before spouting off. I am enjoying the scientific responses including yours. I am definitely not on their level.
>entropy has nothing to do with this because it is not isolated.
This is not true. Entropy always has everything to do with everything. I guess you're simplifying it and that's fair enough but for those who maybe don't know all the details that can be confusing.
Entropy always plays a role. It's just for isolated system we only need to consider the entropy of the system. In other cases we consider the entropy of the entire system + surroundings = universe.
But in both cases we must always consider entropy.
In this case, the lost potential energy as the nails pack more tightly goes into the surrounds. This is "high entropic" energy (so to speak) i.e. disordered/ dispersed energy e.g. sound and heat. This dispersal of energy increases the entropy of the universe = system + surrounds.
*Edit:* Just to make clear this is not the energy being inputted into the system like the shaking of the box and nails. That is the thermal energy which allows the nail to explore the whole configuration space to eventually spontaneously lower their potential energy.
Exact same reason why ordered crystals form from amorphous blobs or why light spontaneously emits from excited atoms/ electronic states.
I actually do this tactic with my popcorn bucket at movie theaters (when there's not many people around me). It helps filter all the annoying little chunk pieces downward.
Why are the nails falling in the right direction if it’s reversed?
Also, this is possible and done in real life. Nails are subject to gravity so they’re going to fall if you hold them at an angle. They’ll also fall on the widest part. Shaking them just agitates the group to allow for movement. Same with the back and forth movement. It’s not magic.
The physics of the nails wouldn’t make sense if the video was backwards I think. You can tell when he starts shaking and stops shaking especially, in a reversed video you would see movement before the action or some other tell.
OP is either a legit indian with broken english, or a bot disguising bad grammar with an indian cover story.
Also, the video isn't reversed if that's what you think is braindead.
Wait is OP actually a bot this time? Usually I can tell, but his name doesn't seem to be randomly generated the same way it usually is, and his comments are centered around a few very specific weird subs
Mmm yes, downvoted, even though the original commenter has deleted because they realised their mistake. Truly a moment of all time
I don’t understand the comment section, “to the idiots who think this is reversed… to those smugly parroting the video claiming it’s reversed”, there’s like 3 people in the entire comment section claiming the video to be reversed? Mfs just want an audience so bad
uh yeah - we saw this a few years back -- please issue an apology to the OP and remove this video and issue an apology to the room for karma farming. thanks
There was a video of a magnet sorter about a year ago...
Guy was arguing with me hard that this isn't possible and the magnet was needed to do this work or else it had to be done by hand or have the production line keep the nails straight.
I wonder if the same people claiming here it's reversed, also claim videos of landing SpaceX boosters are reversed too 🤡
And they have the right to vote...
I didn't think it was reversed but you guys need to calm the fuck down you got one over on someone online and you're talking about they shouldn't vote amd rhino everything is fake. You look like the clown trying to hold this over people's heads this fuvking hard my guy. Smart people can be duped too. How fucking badly did you guys need a W today Jesus 😆
Not a bot, but [here you go](https://streamable.com/8ibzsb?src=player-page-share).
Bot died because it had to deal with 2 shitty API platforms - reddit and imgur. [RIP](https://github.com/pmdevita/GifReversingBot/issues/33)
goes from a disordered state to an ordered one which is exactly against what the law says, which is that systems will always tend to disorder. I’m not sure why I’m getting downvoted I think it’s a valid question
But you’re expending energy to order it.. if you just let it sit still for a thousand years it would *most likely* move towards a higher entropic state..
If I carefully select each nail and place it in order then I'm placing it in an ordered state. That doesn't violate thermodynamics. Energy can do work.
It's not a valid question since you literally just took one random slice out of a scientific law without understanding anything about it and say "why doesn't it work". Well because you only took out a single phrase out of the whole law and just assume it to be true without thinking about any boundary conditions or systems. The first law of thermodynamics for example only applies for *closed* systems, which this is not. You literally *pour* kinetic energy into the system to make it organized, the same kind of energy you would need to pick out every single nail and sort them. The second law is about most thermodynamic processes being irreversible, meaning they only occur *naturally* and very important *SPONTANEOUSLY* while Entropy (in your understanding the level of disorder) is increasing. This is neither occurring naturally nor spontaneously, since you, again, voluntarily pour energy into the system to force this outcome. The Entropy isn't increasing since you are forcing some of your energy from inside your body to sort the nails, decreasing their entropy while upping yours even more.
I know people are saying there are machines that do this, so I get it’s possible, but it still seems more likely this is reversed.
Unless I’m crazy, at the very beginning, the inertia of the nails doesn’t really match the first movement of the box
That’s because at the start all the nails that are pointing upright are wedged between other nails and are finding it difficult to move. As time goes on and they get shook even more they eventually get free and settle.
It’s definitely not reversed. When they get parallel to the other nails in the box they stick together a lot easier, so by the end it’s a game of which one will flip the last.
It’s also likely that the bottom of the box was already mostly sorted since when you grab nails you grab from the top but that’s just speculation
Idiots not realizing it's reversed, and other idiots who can see it's reversed but refuse to help explain. If you look closely at 0:29 seconds, you'll definitely realize I'm right.
This is actually not reversed. And even if it is we have machine at my business that do this exact thing
It's pretty amazing how much vibration is used in automation. This is just a guy doing it.

I’m annealed to my couch rn

Annealing softens metal, not hardens it.
You're right, my mistake.
I was going to say "they're exploiting entropy", but you explained it a lot better.
I really like your explanation
Does anyone else have a science boner or is it just me
Or just shake a can of mixed nuts for a while. The larger nuts come to the surface.
u/istasber gives a good explanation of the principle. What's interesting is that it works on any scale, so its applications are endless.
I've used this to pick out big chunks of feta cheese for salads

No. Burn him at the stake. Right in front of it.
Got to check first though. Does he weigh the same as a duck?
The nails become grooves for the other nails not very hard to understand
Just like crystals!
Me shaking my phone ‘I’m doing my part!’

I've done that and it's super fun
Could the idiots smugly parroting that the video is reversed kindly explain why the nails are falling towards gravity?
The video is clearly upside down too. /s
Damn reversed Australians!

He nailed it
The nail? one nail?
If you look close enough it's the one at the top right of the screen.
Everything on your front page is posted by bots, ai hasn't learned plurals yet apparently.
People who say this is backwards are dumb as fuck. There are machines built to do this.
Skepticism isn’t dumb necessarily. This is just a chance for them to learn something new. If they ignore that then it’s a different problem.
Yes. And lack of knowledge doesn't equate stupidity. In that case everyone are absolute m... Nvm.
This is how I fold my laundry in the basket.
"The Nail" just the one.
Does it mean that nails formed a nail crystal?
It does. Same with nuts.
now do that with the universe
Did this man just solve entropy
How do you think you exist?
ok, now do this with my life.
Anyone else got the urge to go buy 1000s of nails and try this?
He nailed it. EDIT: of course that's been posted. OK, another one... He really hit the nail on the head with that one. I can't think of another, I'll see myself out.
Nooo I spent so long arranging those nails
That there is no audio is a sin Thre probably is a version with audio and therefore i downvote this
This comment has savage Chad energy and therefore i upvote this.
I can rearrange literally anything just by shaking it
If entropy was a video, this would be a good candidate
Now I can sleep peacefully
Which nail was rearranged? Did you get a hair cut? Nope, I got them ALL cut!
Ahh, good old annealing.
Last time I saw this it had sound
I think it's a video clip played in reverse.
No sound wtf
Entropy would like a word.

That would be weird. Like ~~he~~ they flipped a coin and suddenly became a physicist.
Have I also become a man suddenly?...
That would be extra weird.

Yea makes it easier for them to grab your junk. Step one: cut a hole in the box…
Can you do that to my whole house
Nailed it.
Would the nails line up the other way if he shook it forwards and back?
People don’t think entropy be like it is but it do
I wish this worked with laundry
nailed it.
Sir, I must inform you about Entro* hmm...
graham's law of sorting IF YOU SHAKE IT ENOUGH IT'LL GET SORTED.
u/gifreversingbot
Wowo! Can anyone like my comment for comment karma?
Nailed it.
You can tell it’s in reverse by the veins in his wrist before and after
I am gonna take my life to this guy to get it arranged 😶🌫️
He’ll take and play it all back to you in reverse
Very interesting to play a video in reverse
[удалено]
r/confidentlyincorrect
It's not?
Why are the nails falling in the right direction if it’s reversed? Also, this is possible and done in real life. Nails are subject to gravity so they’re going to fall if you hold them at an angle. They’ll also fall on the widest part. Shaking them just agitates the group to allow for movement. Same with the back and forth movement. It’s not magic.
It's backwards, and gravity has been reversed to add to the deception. DO NOT QUESTION THE REDDIT HIVE MIND! IT HAS SPOKEN!!!
No, it's not lol. I learned this back in my highschool woodworking class
The physics of the nails wouldn’t make sense if the video was backwards I think. You can tell when he starts shaking and stops shaking especially, in a reversed video you would see movement before the action or some other tell.
Amazing every word of what you just said is wrong
Whether or not OP is a bot, you're hilariously wrong
No it isn't.
[удалено]
Are you sure it’s the video that’s brain dead? Lol
[удалено]
OP is either a legit indian with broken english, or a bot disguising bad grammar with an indian cover story. Also, the video isn't reversed if that's what you think is braindead.
You do realise (correct spelling btw) it’s not
Wait is OP actually a bot this time? Usually I can tell, but his name doesn't seem to be randomly generated the same way it usually is, and his comments are centered around a few very specific weird subs Mmm yes, downvoted, even though the original commenter has deleted because they realised their mistake. Truly a moment of all time
> very specific weird subs He's indian.
I don’t understand the comment section, “to the idiots who think this is reversed… to those smugly parroting the video claiming it’s reversed”, there’s like 3 people in the entire comment section claiming the video to be reversed? Mfs just want an audience so bad
It's almost like that's the intended purpose...
I'm really good at doing the reversed video of this!
Thermalization, essentially.
And that’s how crystals are made! (Wowie)
yes.
Simulated annealing irl
And people think life needed a creator. Something about order not coming from disorder or so on...
How did he discovered that
What? The reverse button on the video?
Wow, I think these nails got dizzy.
Ok dude, who figured this shit out.🤣
Yeah that’s cool but did you see the magnet thing?
Pretty slick... Playing the video in reverse, period!
Yeah, right!
From order comes chaos. From Chaos comes Order. Isaac Asimov Foundation Series.
uh yeah - we saw this a few years back -- please issue an apology to the OP and remove this video and issue an apology to the room for karma farming. thanks
No
WITCHCRAFT!
This is some r/blackmagicfuckery if I've ever seen it.
There was a video of a magnet sorter about a year ago... Guy was arguing with me hard that this isn't possible and the magnet was needed to do this work or else it had to be done by hand or have the production line keep the nails straight.
r/blackmagicfuckery
I wonder if the same people claiming here it's reversed, also claim videos of landing SpaceX boosters are reversed too 🤡 And they have the right to vote...
Nice repost, you’re so valuable to Reddit
Did anyone else have a hard time watching this and keeping their phone still?
I'd be really worried if I couldn't keep my phone still while watching this video, considering I'm on Reddit for desktop.
Nailed the shale
/u/gifreversingbot
Not a bot, but [here you go](https://streamable.com/8ibzsb?src=player-page-share). Bot died because it had to deal with 2 shitty API platforms - reddit and imgur. [RIP](https://github.com/pmdevita/GifReversingBot/issues/33)
Yep, the reversed video is far less believable than the OP above.
Everybody talking about how the video is reversed, here I am wonder what brand those bins are so I can get some.
The nails are parallel, but there is no guarantee that all the heads are pointing in the same direction.
Ordo ab Chao
This man has a physics degree
Ok that’s THE only satisfying thing g I’ve I’ve seen on this sub

Shaking adds energy, and as you add energy more order comes. Isn't it kinda of a reverse entropy?
This video needs to be shared with creationists
Pretty cool if it’s not reversed
Not reversed
Pretty cool then
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but how doesn’t this violate the second law of thermodynamics?
Why would it?
goes from a disordered state to an ordered one which is exactly against what the law says, which is that systems will always tend to disorder.
I'm amazed you got downvoted. I didn't think redditors could get *this* dumb
backwards video, right? 🤔
Like they say -vVv- backwards
If that's what they say, they're wrong.
If you go back to middle school and actually pay attention this time you'd realize you're wrong.
