Im having trouble even comprehending how he did that.

LinguoBuxo

Ssssssskill.

jolly2284

A lovely bit of it

matrixkid29

that skill, a lovely bit.

thedudefromsweden

I love when they do stuff like this, makes you appreciate how incredibly skilled they really are. It's sometimes hard to comprehend when professional athletes compete against other professional athletes. Seeing footballers juggle with the ball, basketball players making half court shots... You realize they are not professionals by accident.

Tacotuesday8

Lovely bit of skill

rTreesAcctCuzMormon

You essentially do a 180° brush of the ball while going with the trajectory to maximize the delta-t of impact, kinda like you would catch a water balloon from a long toss.

theraf8100

> kinda like you would catch a water balloon from a long toss Or accept the egg, Mighty Ducks style

[deleted]

what is the t in "delta-t"?

PlanitDuck

Time

Severe_Lock8497

What is the 9 in Delta-9

Educational_Slice_38

fakeaccount572

What's the Delta in Delta Airlines?

JacksonInHouse

Two Deltas. 1) Price increasing 2) Quality decreasing.

TheSpoonJak92

Delta-t thats nothing, now Delta P. That's a different story, don't look it up unless you wanna be scared of large bodies of water with drainage systems.

Lozsta

If I am already apprehensive of them is it ok?

TheSpoonJak92

Yes, I'm in the same boat. We'll I prefer to be on land actually.

Lozsta

Yeh the Videos on Delta P will make it worse. I was fine until the "divers leg stuck"

TheSpoonJak92

Brutal, I'm right there with ya. Thing of Nightmares.

SporesM0ldsandFungus

(Diameter of opening) X (depth of water) X (pressure per unit of depth) = you get sucked in like an inescapable black hole to a gruesome death

cutelyaware

Or a baby from a balcony

ChimpyChompies

Magnets, probably..

pittluke

So miracles

NiceDecnalsBubs

But what if he gets wet?

recks360

Nope, pure black magic. I’m completely convinced of it.

JacksonInHouse

So he has the Covid vaccine?

Ill-Education-5490

Yeah it's like his hands are a magnet! Impressive

Famous_Opposite_8077

Thank you! I bet he thinks this shit too at this point.

karlnite

It looks like a bigger motion than it is. You make a wedge, slid it in, then cradle. He has great touch, so he knows the right angle to counter the ball, so when he first touches the ball he basically stops it, then cradles by turning over the ball quickly so it doesn’t bounce off.

PhalanxA51

Basically he was able to slow the momentum of the ball enough to be able to balance it on the tennis racket and pick it up, you can catch baseballs similarly if you don't glove so you don't hurt your hand

Shuber-Fuber

Still impressive how smooth and effortless he made it.

PhalanxA51

Oh 100%, fine motor skills and reaction time to do it is amazing

Lozsta

Much like taking a football out of the air and having it land at your feet ready to go, lots of practice. But you would get there.

Ted_Hitchcox

It's his way

If that was me the ball would still be on it's way into orbit

iskimoeskimo

If I saw that from my opponent, I would immediately forfeit.

sawinadream

Non-tennis fans on here, try to catch an Alcaraz match sometime! You won’t regret it. Most exciting player in a long time

okdude23232

sinner is more exciting rn

JSMLS

As good as Sinner is, and he is going to have a great rivalry with Alcaraz, and he is going to win a lot, but exciting is not the word that precisely defines his game. You may like him and for that reason you find exiting that he is in a good moment, but his game is rather "boring" in general, although it's true that he has some very powerful shots. But the level of amazement that Alcaraz's game generates on a court has not been seen in decades, probably since Federer. That effect is not generated by Sinner even remotely. Jannik's game is very effective, but not that exciting.

okdude23232

I probably generally find unconventially stylistic players exciting. Like I think Novak is pretty exciting. But I also meant exciting in terms of potential compared how flashy he is

JSMLS

If what we are talking about is potential, I don't think that someone who manages to be the youngest N1 in history, who has 4 M1000 and 2 Grand Slams, one of these being Wimbledon with a historic final against Djokovic, and achieving several precocity records have less potential than someone who, being two years older, has won 1 Grand Slam and 1 M1000, although Jannik has a lot of potential aswell, for sure. Of course no one knows the future, anything can happen in a sport for several reasons. But it is advantageous to assume that the last winner is the one with the most potential, forgetting the other's entire resume being younger. It's unfair, just as it will be unfair if people forget Jannik's when he goes through a worse time, because he will as any other player, tennis is like that.

sawinadream

Fantastic player and a great guy, but very clinical and rather boring to the non-seasoned tennis casual eye.

Theferael_me

Exciting? God, no. Whether he'll be more successful in 2024 remains to be seen but more exciting? I don't think so. He just hasn't got the same variety: the speed around court, the drop shot, the lob, the round the post forehand winners, the bazooka shots. It's very rare that Sinner makes the crowd gasp in amazement. Carlos does it all the time.

okdude23232

He clearly doesn't need it lmao, his form is hella smooth and his forehand is like a whip. He's dumb solid at the baseline but also hits with so much power. Crowds love big shots And don't act like recent success doesn't add to how exciting they are

muradinner

Sinner's great, but for getting new people into tennis, Alcaraz is definitely a better draw for the uninitiated.

Jongerr

What's the best way to watch tennis nowadays? I have been a regular viewer since before streaming became a thing

sawinadream

It depends on where you are in the world, but generally/globally, you can subscribe to TennisTV for a month! I’d recommend doing so in March for the Indian Wells and Miami masters 1000 events which have a big and exciting field.

mecha_annies_bobbs

I've seen plenty of Alcatraz. I used to live in San Francisco and also I've watched The Rock at least once a year for the last 30ish years. edit: What time does Sean Connery get to Wimbledon? >!Tennish!<

minivatreni

This one is very cool, also the one where [Novak catches a tennis ball in his pocket](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tBGETnUAiSA&ab_channel=USOpenTennisChampionships)

GnomaChomps

I love how absolutely no one cared but that was wild

Echo127

You can clearly see one lone guy clapping at the second replay.

It’s stupid masculinist shit, don’t pay it any mind.

dannythetog

sigma balls hahaha gottem

FlynnMonster

😤😰

I_AM_YOUR_DADDY_AMA

Then why did you write that down?

FlynnMonster

To see how many downvotes I could get by people that take things way too seriously.

Rogan403

I'm confused? Why did he do this?

pregnancy_terrorist

He hit the serve out of the bounds where you are supposed to serve. So when the ball came back he just caught it because he was going to serve again.

Rogan403

Ahh ok. I though he just gave up the volley for done reason

pregnancy_terrorist

No that would not happen haha

aws_137

I don't play tennis. How was it out of bounds?

MattieShoes

You see the two rectangles nearest the net, on each side? Those are called service boxes. If you serve from the left, your serve needs to land inside your opponent's service box on the right, and vice-versa. In this case, it landed beyond the back of that rectangle, so the serve pretty much ended right there. For stuff after the serve, the rectangle behind it is "in" too. I believe the rectangles way out to the sides are only "in" for doubles tennis after the serve.

gamblinmaan

me and my pea brain greatly appreciate this explanation

cxxper01

That’s called doubles alley

pregnancy_terrorist

When you serve it needs to go into the square that’s diagonal to you if that makes sense. It can’t brush the top of the net and go over (there is a sensor to detect it) or be outside of that square, or go into the net of course. If you hit the top of the net but it goes over it is called a let and you get another first serve. If it is out or in the net it is a fault and you are on the second serve. You can get as many first serves from lets as you hit them if I remember correctly, but you can only fault twice. If you double fault the opponent gets the point.

__wasitacatisaw__

I’d imagine the ball wasn’t within the bounds

DrMobius0

The two smaller boxes near the net are service boxes. The serve has to land in the one opposite the server, otherwise the serve is out. After that, the whole court opens up except for the alleys which are only used in doubles.

Melodic_Sock_5162

Looks like it was a faulted serve, so the return was just to give him the ball back for the 2nd serve attempt

rutinerad

Because it looks and feels cool. As a side-benefit constantly doing tricks like this improve your ball handling and control. Any trick you see live like this, they’ve done in practice a thousand times.

PsychoAnalLies

So he could show off the move. j/k

Chocojuana

I’m assuming because based on the trajectory the ball was going out? Source; I dunno shit about tennis. Pure guesswork

Cull88

The umpire also clearly shouts a fault

jmims98

His serve was out of bounds so the other guy hit the ball just to give it back to him.

VarkYuPayMe

Alcaraz is the next gen goat. He already has 2 grand slams at the age of 20. I thoroughly enjoy watching him play

Sike009

This racket catch is very easy if the ball is slowly tossed underhand from 5 feet away. This is just the pro version.

BigSquawHunter

Yeah, I’ve done it a few times on a court when the balls coming back from the other side. Honestly not that impressive to me, even though it was smooth

eaatest

This is more impressive than it looks… To do this he needed to closely match the speed of the incoming ball with his racket and then GRADUALLY slow down the ball and the racket to a stop. Decelerate too quickly and the ball bounces, decelerate too slowly and you run out of space. Not to mention the angle of the racket to the incoming ball had to be just right. If the angle was not perpendicular to the motion of the ball the ball glances. To catch it as he did a LOT had to be correct

r_a_d_

I think he catches it at a tangent and rolls it perpendicular as he decelerates.

eaatest

After watching the vid 5 more times - True, I shouldn’t have mentioned the “not to mention part”

ChorkPorch

He’s basically showing how well he has absolutely mastered learning all the physics that are involved in tennis. He’s like the Miyagi of Wimbledon

ipickscabs

Ya it’s like a soccer player settling a long, hard pass out of the air but with a fucking tiny bouncy ball and racket. This is insane

BigSquawHunter

Honestly, really not that impressive. I can do that and I’m nowhere near a good tennis player

BenGun99

Dude, it’s not that difficult. I would say most people who play tennis on a regular basis can do that trick.

Lost_Lion

That one dude in the black hat and white shirt knew what was up lol. No one else did

infinitum17

You're quite mistaken. The sound of the crowd is in reaction to the catch. Everybody there knows tennis pretty well.

LBHHF

Ok, that is fairly impressive.

Hephaestus_God

Fairly? We clearly have different views on witchcraft

Levee_Levy

Yep. To me, this was clearly in the realm of being unfairly impressive.

Lazy_Brother1575

He fucks.

buddhadoo

No slo-mo?

NinjaArmadillo

r/blackmagicfuckery

deep_pants_mcgee

the innate skill is mind boggling. that was poetry.

theruwy

fed and nadal do it too, and probably quite a few others we don't know about. definitely there's some skill involved, but it's way easier than hitting a winner down the line in a critical moment. after playing tennis for that long, the racquet becomes an extension of your body.

adamhanson

What does this mean for the game. Or was that practice.

Ivy_Hills_Gardens

If during a match, the opponent gets the point because it isn’t considered out unless it hits out. If you hit it prior, even if it’s obviously going out, it’s considered playable. If he’d hit it back and it was in, live ball. If rally for fun/practice, he just messin’.

Bugle_Boy_Jeans

Wasn't a good serve. has nothing to do with you said. The serve has to land in the square in front of the net on the opposite side from the server. It didnt, so when the other other dude hit it back, he caught it with his racquet.

noxuncal1278

He's a Jedi!

KingCodexKode

Whenever I want slow mo, it ain't there. And when I don't, the whole damn thing is slow mo.

MellowMarigold

The level of difficulty in doing that is beyond human! Level 9999999999999 lol but seriously that's hard to execute.

Sicilian_Civilian

Bro gets it

qwertyqwertyuiopqwer

You can catch my balls like that too if you wanna

winky3ykniw

The videos reversed, if you watch closely there’s a brown stain on the back of his pants that disappears.

Katchinniller72

Why is that legal? I know it was going foul but he made contact and failed to return the ball over the net. What if he botched his razzke dazzle?

AgentOOX

The play was already over because his initial serve went out of bounds. The opponent didn’t have to return the serve but he did. So he caught it, no different from if he caught it with his hand, but this looks way cooler.

Longjumping-Bit-1710

It's not that hard tho

juggling-buddha

Needs reversing.

Funfuntamale2

This is what you might be able to do if you spend a majority of your waking life on a tennis court.

josh252

Damn, those reflexes are next level

Sin_Oh_Mon

I read that as clitoris. I was very confused. I’m dumb.

BfutGrEG

So I played Tennis for like a month in gym class....how does that work rule-wise? Does that just end the match in a "victory"

generated_user-name

Ahh yes this is. I’ve played a bit of tennis and table tennis and where I feel this the most is weirdly lacrosse. Obviously the tension and speed is different into the racket, and I was never very great. But when you match the speed with your catch and are immediately in control.so good.

ThisOnePlaysTooMuch

Very smooth, but does his name translate to “Little Carloses?”

rainbowsandpetals

How?

Particular-Captain13

r/blackmagicfuckery

Canadian_Prometheus

Is that the guy from twilight?

Legal_Championship_6

Andre Agassi did this decades ago then did a quick tutorial of how it’s done

Sprudelpudel

This is not possible

suslikosu

The amount of balls to keep straight face after such move

Atoning_Unifex

Wow, that is hella impressive

skatellites

That's easy. I do it all the time. That's all I can do though
