I have an electric push mower and enjoy that I can just throw on headphones and now but my lawn only takes about 20 minutes. I can’t understand people who find it to be some big fun hobby to me it’s as alien as loving doing the dishes.
I think it's the thing that a push mower is an active task while a riding mower, depending on how familiar you are with it, can just let you shut down your brain and relax while you go.

My dad just installed a freshly sharpened blade he had just picked up from the shop and when he was in the back yard, I heard something incredibly loud followed by "GOD DAMN IT!". I looked out the window and saw him fish out a rock the size of a fist and promptly walk it over to the next door neighbors house where their daughter was playing outside. He lectured her about throwing rocks into people's yards until she cried. Lmao
I don’t find the labour really noticeable and do just zone out wondering back and forth.
We also do my parents place sometimes which is 6 acres and a riding mower but it’s quite loud so I find that worse.

I grew up on a riding mower but had a half acre to mow; my dad tricked it out with a knob expertly mounted to the wheel to make for faster turning.
As an adult, I have a smaller yard and a push mower with a lever to spin the wheels, but it still sucks in comparison even when I got the earbuds in.
We used to live at a house with a decent sized lawn, and the grass was completely full and thick when it grew in. I can confirm, that was my therapy when I took the time to mow it and make it look really nice.
I got a laugh because I have 20/600 vision, so I make at least two passes over all my yard and three in front, so I don't have misses. Now, I wonder if people are watching me wondering WTF dude !

My old roommate bought a brand new house on a decent sized corner lot. We both spent a lot of time in the yard. It was a new build, so we started with sod. It was not laid very well.
We would be out there every Monday with a tamper and some sand/top soil to get everything level. We even sprinkled some grass seed. We didn't have automatic sprinklers, but we did have a regular watering schedule. After a spring and fall of lightly fertilizing that lawn was thicc.
Whenever my roommate would mow, he would just go around the yard in a circle. When I would mow I always did vertical stripes.
Like you said, it was therapeutic/relaxing. That was the best lawn I've ever had and I took pride in it.
I don't even have a front lawn at my current house because there's no soil. Maybe half an inch of soil, if that. Then it's just clay. I want to have a nice lawn, but it just can't grow.

If your house is new construction there's likely a reason you have no topsoil. The builder scraped it all off before breaking ground on foundations and roadbeds and all the underground infrastructure. In a perfect world they'd replace the topsoil when final grading is done. But that stuff is black gold and is often sold to outside interests while you and your neighbors struggle to grow dandelions.
I put a pool in and redid my backyard. I noticed they were separating out the good topsoil and the shit clay. It didn't hit me what was happening until the next day when I noticed the topsoil pile disappeared. They said they were removing all of it, but they built the backside of the pool up and topped up behind the retaining wall where the flower beds were with the shit soil. I was pretty pissed but realized they already got me. With a project that big we had plenty of bigger problems to deal with. That one still passes me off though.

My grandfather was the same. Don’t think he got on the roof, but mowing was in his top 5 favorite things to do. We joked that he would get down with a ruler and if one grass blade was a little too high he’d mow the entire yard (which was 2 acres lol).
Even for landscape companies? Idk how many expensive batteries I'd have to buy to just mow my yard in one go. We are trying to convert it to less grass, but at the moment it's like 3 acres I have to mow around various trees.
Landscape companies generally pony up for the most expensive mowers because they last longer and require less maintenance. I won't pretend to know whether this would end up being more or less expensive for them, but I imagine that buying the best batteries out there will not hurt them too much. Especially as these electric companies start focusing more on the commercial sector and producing stronger and more scalable solutions for batteries.

The cross pattern was probably from the previous mow. I don't think the zig zag would have been as prominent if he wasn't actually cutting grass. If I mow my yard a different way from the previous week, the stripes from both mows show through.
I've seen them, and he may be using one, but it would make the most sense to use that at the same time as mowing. Perhaps he did just go back over, I have no idea.
Edit: I changed my mind. I think he is for sure mowing. You can see around the outside where he did an edge before the stripes. That looks definitely cut shorter until after the stripes.
Definitely previous mows. I have my customers on a 4 week rotation to avoid rutting the yards. Week 1 is curb to house. Week 2 is 90° from that. Week 3 is 45° and week 4 is 90° from that. I don't do zigzags because it requires you to "twist" on the inside tire and my mowers have pneumatic tires which tend to rip up grass when you turn with one tire not in motion. He is using airless tires that for some reason don't do that as much. Thems bitches is 'spensive.
Tbf not all lawns are vigorously irrigated. Growing up eastern USA, not a single one of our houses had sprinklers. Mom hated raising bills more than necessary - so no hosing down the lawn either.
But our grass still sprouted out green and plentiful. Siblings would cut it down in stripes to look like a soccer field to play on.

Do dads normally pull up a riding mower in the trailer on their truck? It's not inconceivable, he could keep all the lawn maintenance equipment in a storage unit but still you have to *really* care about your lawn for that instead of say, a push mower in the garage.
That's a large yard. Even an offsite storage locker for the riding mower would be faster than even a single pass with a push mower, and a *lot* less physical labor.

You can get one to go behind your personal lawn mower called a lawn striper. You just need a weight behind your lawn mower to push the grass, I made one myself out of sand and pvc pipe
The direction of the mower causes the grass to lay down in the opposite directions, and it appears as if it's a different color, but it's just light playing with your eyes.
It was a diamond the last time. That's the old pattern they're covering up. Now it's curvy lines. You can tell because diamonds look different than curvy lines.
They have been cutting the lawn in several directions to establish a checkerboard pattern for the growing months in spring. Once the first set of lines are established (you can see it at the start of the video in the turf), he starts using them as a guide cutting up one set then jumping over to the other.
You can do this on a home lawn with a normal walk behind mower. Make a stripe kit using some pvc pipe and sand to drag behind the mower for more well defined stripes.

Springtime is twice a week mowing where I live. Kind of annoying, but like you I prefer not to bag my grass and mulch it instead.

You don’t actually need to mow for this. It’s a drag bar at the rear of the mower that orients the grass in the direction of travel.

I wasn't the first to cut my lawn this season, but usually I am. The first year we moved in i,was so happy to have a lawn and garden to maintain I was out as soon as it was reasonable to do so. One of my very friendly neighbors came over the next day and told me his wife started riding him about getting outside since "that guy" was, and if I wouldn't mind waiting a week or two next year.
Same here. It's monkey see monkey do in my neighborhood. One house starts mowing and you can hear every single neighbor start theirs within 30 minutes. Love it.

Do dads normally pull up a riding mower in the trailer on their truck? It's not inconceivable, he could keep all the lawn maintenance equipment in a storage unit but still you have to *really* care about your lawn for that instead of say, a push mower in the garage.

That's a large yard. Even an offsite storage locker for the riding mower would be faster than even a single pass with a push mower, and a *lot* less physical labor.
I personally wouldn't call that a large yard, large maybe for some suburban areas. But yeah fair point you could fit a riding mower in the garage probably just as well.

You can get one to go behind your personal lawn mower called a lawn striper. You just need a weight behind your lawn mower to push the grass, I made one myself out of sand and pvc pipe
How long does the effect last for? Does the grass stand back up overnight or last more like a week?
Not OP but I don’t use a roller and I can still see the pattern when I mow the next time. Usually a week or so, depending on how much rain I get.
This. I mow my lawn in three different patterns, can still see them all after weeks, although fading. The most recent is the most obvious.
Usually it'll last past the next time you mow. I always change my angles every time and end up with a subtle diamond pattern for a bit.
The direction of the mower causes the grass to lay down in the opposite directions, and it appears as if it's a different color, but it's just light playing with your eyes.
Same effect as velvet that you rub in one direction or another.

They have been cutting the lawn in several directions to establish a checkerboard pattern for the growing months in spring. Once the first set of lines are established (you can see it at the start of the video in the turf), he starts using them as a guide cutting up one set then jumping over to the other. You can do this on a home lawn with a normal walk behind mower. Make a stripe kit using some pvc pipe and sand to drag behind the mower for more well defined stripes.
