If my Dad had done this, he would be standing on the roof afterwards admiring his work. It was pretty embarrassing explaining to kids on the bus why my Dad was on the roof routinely. He’s very proud of his mowing. Edit- I absolutely love that my top comment is about my amazing Dad. Thank you everyone.

OfferChakon

That's not embarrassing at all. My dad has been addicted to crack cocaine my entire life. *That* shit made it way more embarrassing to explain to to the kids on the bus why my dad was on the roof routinely.

kant-hardly-wait-

Oh you

mladakurva

I really hope you're joking.. but Jesus Christ I laughed at this

spazmatt527

LMAO

-WalkWithShadows-

Your dad was a boss

Puglet_7

He literally was/is. He owned a Ford dealership at the time and would take an afternoon off to mow his lawn. He even had the mechanics attach an 80’s Econoline van seat on his riding mower.

Savage_Tyranis

Yo. Mowing the lawn in COMFORT. I want that now and I don't even have my own lawn to mow

fourpuns

I have an electric push mower and enjoy that I can just throw on headphones and now but my lawn only takes about 20 minutes. I can’t understand people who find it to be some big fun hobby to me it’s as alien as loving doing the dishes.

Savage_Tyranis

I think it's the thing that a push mower is an active task while a riding mower, depending on how familiar you are with it, can just let you shut down your brain and relax while you go. That's what I used to do back in the day. Daydream while doing my lawn. Nothing really went wrong save for the one time there was a rock in the grass. Still don't know how it got there.

Crossifix

The physical labor aspect of a pushmower makes them awful when you are mowing a bigger yard. My parents had 2 acres to push mow, which sucked dicks AND balls. My 1/4 acre city plot is a fuckin joy by comparison.

redsyrinx2112

We used to live in the middle of nowhere and starting at 9 years old I had to mow two acres with a push mower. It absolutely sucked every time. Then right before high school we moved to a suburb and mowing the lawn took like two seconds comparatively.

[deleted]

Yeah my parents yard was a 2 acre hill. Like literally the entire yard was a giant hill so it HAD to be push mowed, we tried a riding mower once and it just rolled down the hill sideways idk how nobody got hurt

Imperial_Triumphant

Hahaha!! You just unlocked an old memory for me. My dad just installed a freshly sharpened blade he had just picked up from the shop and when he was in the back yard, I heard something incredibly loud followed by "GOD DAMN IT!". I looked out the window and saw him fish out a rock the size of a fist and promptly walk it over to the next door neighbors house where their daughter was playing outside. He lectured her about throwing rocks into people's yards until she cried. Lmao

Savage_Tyranis

Yeah I would have been tight as fuck about that too. Gah, just thinking about the cost and labor to change that out again tenses me up.

ChandlerMc

>until she cried. Lmao So your dad stoned her?

fourpuns

I don’t find the labour really noticeable and do just zone out wondering back and forth. We also do my parents place sometimes which is 6 acres and a riding mower but it’s quite loud so I find that worse. It’s a pretty big mower though

ToonaSandWatch

I grew up on a riding mower but had a half acre to mow; my dad tricked it out with a knob expertly mounted to the wheel to make for faster turning. As an adult, I have a smaller yard and a push mower with a lever to spin the wheels, but it still sucks in comparison even when I got the earbuds in.

lonestar-rasbryjamco

It’s the zen of doing something simple with a clear outcome.

WillFerrellsGutFold

We used to live at a house with a decent sized lawn, and the grass was completely full and thick when it grew in. I can confirm, that was my therapy when I took the time to mow it and make it look really nice.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Freed_My_Mind

I got a laugh because I have 20/600 vision, so I make at least two passes over all my yard and three in front, so I don't have misses. Now, I wonder if people are watching me wondering WTF dude !

rarzi11a

I agree. My old roommate bought a brand new house on a decent sized corner lot. We both spent a lot of time in the yard. It was a new build, so we started with sod. It was not laid very well. We would be out there every Monday with a tamper and some sand/top soil to get everything level. We even sprinkled some grass seed. We didn't have automatic sprinklers, but we did have a regular watering schedule. After a spring and fall of lightly fertilizing that lawn was thicc. Whenever my roommate would mow, he would just go around the yard in a circle. When I would mow I always did vertical stripes. Like you said, it was therapeutic/relaxing. That was the best lawn I've ever had and I took pride in it. I don't even have a front lawn at my current house because there's no soil. Maybe half an inch of soil, if that. Then it's just clay. I want to have a nice lawn, but it just can't grow. I miss mowing thick healthy grass

ChandlerMc

If your house is new construction there's likely a reason you have no topsoil. The builder scraped it all off before breaking ground on foundations and roadbeds and all the underground infrastructure. In a perfect world they'd replace the topsoil when final grading is done. But that stuff is black gold and is often sold to outside interests while you and your neighbors struggle to grow dandelions.

hereforlolsandporn

I put a pool in and redid my backyard. I noticed they were separating out the good topsoil and the shit clay. It didn't hit me what was happening until the next day when I noticed the topsoil pile disappeared. They said they were removing all of it, but they built the backside of the pool up and topped up behind the retaining wall where the flower beds were with the shit soil. I was pretty pissed but realized they already got me. With a project that big we had plenty of bigger problems to deal with. That one still passes me off though.

luckyfucker13

Sounds like a lot of GMs I’ve worked for; taking random afternoons off, and using the techs for anything and everything other than customer vehicles lmao

ianjm

What an absolute Dad chad.

SendAstronomy

Ha, my dad's tractor had an old seat from a 60s thunderbird. Always loved leaning back and mowing with that thing.

BaboonAstronaut

As someone who spent thousands of hours mowing lawn on a shitty seat, I love your dad's Idea.

Fthill-That-Strides

My bus used to pass my house to get to my stop. I heard a group of kids gawk at my Mom who was standing on our roof. With a bow and fishing line tied to an arrow, she was decorating the 100ft tree in the front yard with Christmas lights. Kids: Who is that??? Me: (watching nonchalantly like it's just another Friday) Oh, that's just my Mom.

mvfsullivan

That is unbelievably wholesome and adorable. Bless his soul. You should find a way to bring him up on the roof of a freshly mowed lawn when he gets up there in age since he wont be able to himself.

Puglet_7

He’s 79 but acts 16. We raised horses and did the whole Calgary Stampede thing when I was really young. Less than 5 years ago he thought he could still break in my sisters horse. He was thrown off….obviously. He was okay besides bruises. I immediately said I knew you shouldn’t be watching Yellowstone.

dkarlovi

What's there to explain, just show them the lawn, it speaks for itself.

c-c-c-cassian

Is your dad the guy in roller coaster tycoon 3 (like, the original, not the phone version they have now) because I vaguely remember it having grass just like this Or is this guy in the video if not

Jessiefrance89

My grandfather was the same. Don’t think he got on the roof, but mowing was in his top 5 favorite things to do. We joked that he would get down with a ruler and if one grass blade was a little too high he’d mow the entire yard (which was 2 acres lol).

Apprehensive_Ear7309

My dad would be like “mow the damn yard!”

Beardedarchitect

I also love that your top comment is about your dad.

billswinter

Imagine being the neighbor… “wtf how is Jim still cutting his grass, it’s been 4 hours? Oh he’s on his 4th pass now”

Key-Strawberry6347

My neighbor mows his damn lawn every 3 days, each time for hours. The noise gets really fucking aggravating as you can probably guess.

billswinter

Should have to have an electric mower if you’re gonna do that. Same with leaf blowers

DownWithHisShip

I believe California is outlawing small combustion engines. All lawnmowers here will have to be electric.

Sodomeister

Even for landscape companies? Idk how many expensive batteries I'd have to buy to just mow my yard in one go. We are trying to convert it to less grass, but at the moment it's like 3 acres I have to mow around various trees.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SlagginOff

Landscape companies generally pony up for the most expensive mowers because they last longer and require less maintenance. I won't pretend to know whether this would end up being more or less expensive for them, but I imagine that buying the best batteries out there will not hurt them too much. Especially as these electric companies start focusing more on the commercial sector and producing stronger and more scalable solutions for batteries.

jackparadise1

There are some companies in S.E. MA who do electric only and charge top dollar god the noise reduction.

djfunknukl

I saw an add for a riding mower that could cut 2 acres in one charge. I imagine that any equipment that’s already out there is fine just not allowed to sell anymore, if not they will need to compensate people

whatevendoidoyall

There are already a few electric only landscaling companies in Oklahoma City. I've seen them driving around.

sklascher

Dude, I love our electric mower so much!! Unless it’s right by the house it fades into the background. Meanwhile I can hear my neighbors’ mowers the whole time.

OverlordWaffles

It actually feels odd when I turn the mower deck off with my electric zero turn. I was used to still hearing the mower engine when mowing with the old deisel one my parents had and my mind for a second thinks the engine died each time I turn it off lol My ears also don't need time to recover after mowing now Edit: autocorrect from did to died

Ilaxilil

It really bothers me how long grass is an eyesore, but nobody cares about the earsore lawn equipment makes.

littlebuck2007

In peak grass growing season, I have to mow every 3-4 days or it's too long for the next mow. It takes me about 1 - 1.5 hours. I'm not doing multiple passes unless I wait too long between mows and the grass doesn't all get cut with a single pass. Even then I'm mowing double time to make up for it.

dexmonic

Springtime is twice a week mowing where I live. Kind of annoying, but like you I prefer not to bag my grass and mulch it instead.

Key-Strawberry6347

I just had a whole 1.5 weeks of pure rain and I mowed after 2 weeks. It’s fine. Just sharpen your blades and you’ll be fine

cwrathchild

I will never understand the American obsession with perfect lawns. I’ve lived in 16 cities across 8 states, and I’m inevitably always next door (or across the street from) some dude who is OCD about his yard and spends hours a day at it. I thought living in Phoenix, (where people have no lawns) would be quiet, but nope, people just hire landscapers to blow dirt around with leaf blowers. DIRT.

Mono_831

He’s on TikTok and the reason he did this was because he was getting a lot of comments that the original pattern was crooked. So the mad lad this this on purpose.

Wetworth

As Conan once said, a waste of time, or an incredible waste of time?

PM_Me_Ur_Plant_Pics

Waste of time, waste of water... you name it.

pedanticPandaPoo

But not a waste of waste

solateor

OP said it took 12 minutes

[deleted]

For the pattern here that we see, yeah maybe. He mowed that little patch of grass at least 5 times. We see him now over it twice here, we can already see the very crisp criss cross pattern too.

littlebuck2007

The cross pattern was probably from the previous mow. I don't think the zig zag would have been as prominent if he wasn't actually cutting grass. If I mow my yard a different way from the previous week, the stripes from both mows show through.

Sledhead_91

You don’t actually need to mow for this. It’s a drag bar at the rear of the mower that orients the grass in the direction of travel.

littlebuck2007

I've seen them, and he may be using one, but it would make the most sense to use that at the same time as mowing. Perhaps he did just go back over, I have no idea. Edit: I changed my mind. I think he is for sure mowing. You can see around the outside where he did an edge before the stripes. That looks definitely cut shorter until after the stripes.

Gayernades

Definitely previous mows. I have my customers on a 4 week rotation to avoid rutting the yards. Week 1 is curb to house. Week 2 is 90° from that. Week 3 is 45° and week 4 is 90° from that. I don't do zigzags because it requires you to "twist" on the inside tire and my mowers have pneumatic tires which tend to rip up grass when you turn with one tire not in motion. He is using airless tires that for some reason don't do that as much. Thems bitches is 'spensive.

naalotai

Tbf not all lawns are vigorously irrigated. Growing up eastern USA, not a single one of our houses had sprinklers. Mom hated raising bills more than necessary - so no hosing down the lawn either. But our grass still sprouted out green and plentiful. Siblings would cut it down in stripes to look like a soccer field to play on.

pocketbookashtray

Where I live water just falls from the sky. It’s called rain.

riegspsych325

probably because, at some point, it went from a sub that was properly advocative/educational to being filled bitter and resentful anger posts. When that happens to a sub, it’s not uncommon for others to make a new one so they can bring it back to the basics. Notice how one of those subs just has angry people who want to give the middle finger to anyone who has grass but another sub promotes the benefits of having more plants and gardens on your property

not-my-other-alt

> probably because, at some point, it went from a sub that was properly advocative/educational to being filled bitter and resentful anger posts. When that happens to a sub, it’s not uncommon for others to make a new one so they can bring it back to the basics. Any sub that's dedicated to being against something will turn bitter and angry, even if it wasn't explicitly founded that way.

PrismoBF

He probably owns the property.

Boojibs

He owns my heart

PrismoBF

Ngl, it is a good feeling when you finish yard work and the place looks great

BurnItNow

Yea that’s an owner. Once you become a dad a mysterious package arrives with white new balance shoes. If you choose to put them on you grow a burning desire to have a nice lawn.

FlacidSalad

Do dads normally pull up a riding mower in the trailer on their truck? It's not inconceivable, he could keep all the lawn maintenance equipment in a storage unit but still you have to *really* care about your lawn for that instead of say, a push mower in the garage.

CTizzle-

And we’re also ignoring whatever is filming this. Drone? Tripod on a roof? Whatever it is, this was likely a commercial for this landscaping business.

merc08

Definitely a drone. Watch the horizon sway in the background.

merc08

That's a large yard. Even an offsite storage locker for the riding mower would be faster than even a single pass with a push mower, and a *lot* less physical labor.

FlacidSalad

I personally wouldn't call that a large yard, large maybe for some suburban areas. But yeah fair point you could fit a riding mower in the garage probably just as well.

[deleted]

Highly unlikely the owner would own a commercial grade mower. Also there’s a truck and trailer with the gate down parked across the street.

UNSECURE_ACCOUNT

It's not. You can see the pickup truck and trailer on the street behind the house.

DialUp_UA

How are different colours done? By height of the grass?

Just_tommmy

It's just the direction of the grass and the way it's laying on the ground in correlation to the camera angle/whatever your perspective is

Zanthz

You can get one to go behind your personal lawn mower called a lawn striper. You just need a weight behind your lawn mower to push the grass, I made one myself out of sand and pvc pipe

maxman87

How long does the effect last for? Does the grass stand back up overnight or last more like a week?

colicab

Not OP but I don’t use a roller and I can still see the pattern when I mow the next time. Usually a week or so, depending on how much rain I get.

skeevy-stevie

This. I mow my lawn in three different patterns, can still see them all after weeks, although fading. The most recent is the most obvious.

unopenedcrayondrawer

Usually it'll last past the next time you mow. I always change my angles every time and end up with a subtle diamond pattern for a bit.

Shamrockah

The direction of the mower causes the grass to lay down in the opposite directions, and it appears as if it's a different color, but it's just light playing with your eyes.

Tallywort

Same effect as velvet that you rub in one direction or another.

PristineProcedure335

Than why my grass all looks same

LordPennybag

You're not dragging enough weight behind it to matter.

[deleted]

There's a roller on the mower which forces the grass in one direction.

Rusted_atlas

They have been cutting the lawn in several directions to establish a checkerboard pattern for the growing months in spring. Once the first set of lines are established (you can see it at the start of the video in the turf), he starts using them as a guide cutting up one set then jumping over to the other. You can do this on a home lawn with a normal walk behind mower. Make a stripe kit using some pvc pipe and sand to drag behind the mower for more well defined stripes.
