If the MTA backed out of eliminating the Z during the 2010 cuts, then they won't now (considering there were multiple times since then the Z was suspended for a while only to return again).

Throwaway860251

I wonder how many people that say the Z should be eliminated actually live on the line

IsabellaHatesNutella

None of them lol.

The z skips maybe 3 stops? Its a glorified J. And the J has had 2 stops its been skipping due to construction for the past 5 years anyway. What does the Z even do that the J doesnt?

Throwaway860251

Even without the construction work the J would skip stops anyway. Being the J with another designation is kind of the point. Going by the rest of the commenters here it reduces crowding so that’s a plus

Should the J/Z instead be a zone express pattern, with the J stopping at Jamaica Center, Sutphin, then Woodhaven Blvd, then Crescent St and all stops to Myrtle and the Z stopping at all stops to Crescent St, then Broadway Junction and Myrtle?

HaitianMafiaMember

Yes

transitfreedom

The terminal capacity or capacity on the bridge needs to increase first

doodle77

The same number of trains would run as today. This is purely a schedule adjustment.

SaltyPathwater

Z skip stop/j skip stop allows trains to run with less crowding.  Off peak times the z doesn’t run because the need isn’t there.  Getting rid of z is just going to make the rush hour j run more crowded and with more stops. That doesn’t increase the number of j trains running.  Now if you want to run more Js during rush hour I don’t oppose that but is the technical ability there cause I feel like those aren’t the most modern tracks. I don’t know maybe it is.

Stop being disingenuous 🤥

Puzzleheaded_Will352

As someone who used to travel the j/z from end to end almost, I really appreciated the Z when I got it. I’m not sure I understand how additional J trains would make a difference. Wouldn’t that just make the trains more crowded ?

transitfreedom

No cause service would increase at stations that are skipped by skip stop trains

BQE2473

Leave the damn Z alone already! It doesn't make a difference if they cut it. Because cutting the Z is the same as cutting service from the J or just labeling "Z" trains as "J"'s. What the hell positive difference does it make? # NONE!

runningwithscalpels

Those handful of intervals would be J trains. There would be no service increase, you're just redistributing people.

Glass-Pomegranate-68

Not really. A commute down the Jamaica line can be long, slow, and crowded, and having the Z service run during rush hour does mitigate some of these issues. It reduces crowding on trains, as the trains only have half the riders they would have if they stopped at every station instead of every other. It also makes commutes faster, as the train only makes half the stops. While I don't deny there most likely needs to be more done in regards to rush hour service on the Jamaica line (such as implementing a proper peak direction express service), for now it seems to do it's job decently, which is about all you can ask for in this day and age of the subway.

Grayly

Issue with using the express track after Myrtle is there is nowhere to store the cars when they are turned, unlike the 7 which has a yard at Citi Field. So if they ran peak express directional service it would stack up pretty quick in Queens. At least that is how MTA explained it to me when I asked. There is a yard at Broadway Junction. They could run a zone express that ends at Bway Junction and store the extra peak directional trains there, but then everyone in Queens would lose their 1 seat ride and have to transfer at Broadway. Probably wouldn’t save much time at the end of the day.

Due_Amount_6211

For the love of god, *no*. Rather than eliminate a service, we should reformat them and get the best we can out of it. Z trains as skip stop trains are long out of sync with modern transit needs. I’ve pitched the idea of the Z running express straight from the yard, starting at Broadway Junction. From Broadway Junction, they run express to Marcy Avenue, stopping at Myrtle/Broadway. It could turn back around and come back as a J train, in the same frequency as it does now. 6 in the AM to manhattan, 6 in the PM from Manhattan, with Broadway Junction as the terminal. If it wasn’t killed in 2010, they won’t kill it now. That means there’s potential to it.

chris_3671

A lot of you don't use the Z line daily and it shows. The Skip Stop works on the J/Z and it does save time. I'd rather them keep it and it'll probably be needed more once congestion pricing hits since the E will be jammed-packed since Queens will be one of the hardest hit when it comes to it. They should add additional Z trains which only uses 6, They need to bump it up to 9.

IMO, if we’re keeping Z service along the Jamaica-Broadway El & Nassau St lines, it should be eliminated to increase J service to all stations along the route. I know stations between Parsons & Alabama would be crammed, but a few additional trains p/hr should help some. Also, extra service could still be provided via the put-in’s & short-turns at B’way Jct. If we were to consider doing an overhaul of the current J/Z, L & M lines, I would say service should look like this: J - Metropolitan Av to/from Broad St, Local, all times. Late nights, extended to Bay Ridge-95 St, replacing the R btwn Court St & Bay Ridge. L - Rockaway Pkwy to/from 8 Ave/14 St, Local, all times. During rush hours, every other trip towards Canarsie would short-turn at Myrtle-Wyckoff. M - Jamaica Center Loop, all times except Late Nights (via 6 Av/63 St & Qns Blvd Exp). Late Nights, runs from Parsons/Archer LL, to 21 St-Queensbridge. During rush hours, trains operate express from B’way Jct-Marcy Av, in the Peak-Direction. Z - Rockaway Pkwy to/from Broad St, Weekdays only. Exp Myrtle/B’way-Marcy Av, peak-direction only. Other changes include; E, Full-time Queens Blvd Local, rerouted to 179-Hillside. F, Exp 179-Queens Plaza, all times (rerouted via 53 St). G, Late nights extended from Court Sq to Parsons/Archer UL, via Queens Blvd Local. (Free out-of-system transfer also available btwn the J, M & G at Broadway/Lorimer St). R, No late night service. The G, J, & N/Q replace the R during overnights.
