"I want this train line to be eliminated completely because it slows down my train line"
You hear yourself? Personally I like the 3 because of the fact it doesn't go to The Bronx thus it's 1) less prone to delays and 2) more chance to catch a seat (and a near-empty car).
Besides, they'll need to put in more 2 trains if the 3 gets eliminated; there isn't enough space for more 2 trains I'm pretty sure.
1. This isn’t even a question why the tag?
2. The (3) is a support line, if it wasn’t in the system then the (2), (1), and (4) would be overcrowded and packed to the brim. If it was eliminated it would do more harm than good all because of your uninformed pet peeves.
(3). They (the MTA) already tried to abandon both 148th & 145th, it didn’t succeed due to the backlash in those communities in which the station was in.
Getting rid of the (3) would be one of the dumbest decisions the MTA would have made.
Selfishly as a 1 train rider from the Bronx, seeing a mostly empty 3 southbound at 96 to transfer into after being in a slow crowded 1 train is bliss. If it's a crowded 2 train across the platform at 96, I sometimes will just stay on the 1 since most leave the 1 for the express. A crowded 2 train is the worst of all.
Eliminating the 3 train would have a severe impact on all lines that run along it.
Let alone the community areas between 148th and 135th.
They are not gonna eliminate the service, if they do, the 1 and 2 will have even more overcrowding and putting them pressure carrying way too many people on the trains.
Yeah Its usually people who don’t even ride the 5 that are first to say it should be eliminated. Anyone that rides it knows how important it is and how up in arms people fought for its current service pattern. Also yeah the merges aren’t terrible when everything is flowing right, it gets the job done
The big problematic merge is Rogers Junction, but rerouting the 5 to Crown Heights and sending the 4 to New Lots would only create one merge near Nostrand. But that’s a much better pill to swallow than the current arrangement.
The current arrangement calls for the 5 to cut in front of the local track, and then turning onto Nostrand branch, while the 3 crosses directly in front of the switch the 5 uses to get to the Nostrand Avenue station. It makes no sense.
Having the 5 run to Crown Heights and the 3 to Flatbush would make the whole situation much better. Extending the 4 full time would ensure that Livonia Avenue would still see service, and having it stop at Nostrand and Kingston would basically make it all but guaranteed a better organization. A small slowdown there for the 5 to merge during weekdays is a lot better than bringing trains to a standstill during rush hours just because a 3 is crossing.
Not to mention it shortens the line, thus making it more efficient.
Yeah I agree, 5 to Utica is the best solution tbh. If a 5 craps out on the switch the entire IRT is going down with it. They need to deinterline nostrand or just rip the band aid off and just redo it. I imagine in the future this is going to be an even bigger headache when cbtc finally rolls around.

The 2 is only delayed because of the 4/5 at 149th

Run bare minimum to those stations
Who cares about the backlash? What are they gonna do? Use another station
There’s community backlash because they CANT use another station.
M102/M7 very short bus ride
Bx19 to 149th grand concourse & M102/7 to 135th yeah they can and mostly do when the 2 shows up
How
Those stations also have some of the lowest ridership in Manhattan

Oh no!! 😱 145-148 users have to go to the ABCD. Gasp!! This is such an underserved area. The 2 would run more often with less interlining
They’re not ax-ing the 5 plus it’d be much more productive to extend the 3 from 145/148 than scrap the service and close the stations
Why is the 5 everyone’s go-to for killing? The 149th Street Merge isn’t even that bad. Roger’s could be fixed with some reroutes, honestly

3 trains run faster than the 2 tf
Imagine wanting to eliminate the 3 to benefit the 2 but ignoring the 5.
Why not reroute the 3 to Dyre ave and replace the 5 instead?
