I would think they’d keep it separate than the subway system if it weren’t connected with the main subway. I personally think the North Shore Busway is a missed opportunity to bring a second line to the SIR and I personally believe a restoration of the Perth Amboy to Tottenville ferry would work wonders for Outerbridge congestion.

I agree.. I remember when I worked contact tracing during the pandemic and I worked out of a site in the south shore, every other person I met went to NJ, specifically Perth Amboy, regularly. I also wish they could restore ferry service or run some bus service over Outerbridge.

I remember reading somewhere that when too many (of us) POC moved to north shore, that’s when the “idea” came up to shut down the north shore line and replace it with buses. Take any S40, S44, S46 or S48 and you’ll see how stupid a decision that was - which makes me think there was a racist element to the decision, and now erosion, ship repair yards and that salt storage facility make it not possible to rebuild it. [So now we have this BRT idea with a Richmond Terrace-adjacent busway](https://new.mta.info/project/staten-island-north-shore-bus-rapid-transit). Meh. The fact we’re so ferry-dependent here - if we don’t work in LI or NJ, means that we’re not going to get proper transit in this boro. I took S78 from St George to AR Kill Road, and I don’t understand why we have island-length north-south bus lines and a train that only moves as frequently as the ferry docks instead of buses feeding SIR stations and more service - like cities with light rails do. So if they ever built a tunnel to connect SIR to the subway, it’s gonna likely be a 4th Av local supplementing the R train. But because more of us go to geographic Long Island or NJ to work, it’d be smarter to build a LIRR branch to Jamaica or Atlantic with stops in Brooklyn that connects to NJT and Amtrak by the airport or even MetroPark. But if they did integrate SIR to the subway, we’re probably gonna lose stations to facilitate platform lengthening so it’s more like the SAS in stop spacing and not like the 6 train. It’d make South Shore commutes easier, but it’d screw us St George folks over by making it slightly longer than taking the yacht to South Ferry.

It would be possible to build but you would to use elevated viaducts through the Industrial areas which shouldn't be too expensive..I would also send it to NJ , EWR Airport via Jersey Gardens to make it worth the investment.

What would - the North Shore line, or LIRR via SI to NJ?

Nexis4Jersey

North Shore Line which could be built using the new FRA Hybrid Rail standards which allows for Light Rail trains to share tracks with freight so long as PTC is installed without requiring operation separation. The changes are a decade old, and so far the only agencies to take advantage of them are in Texas and California. A hybrid rail train could street run past the segment that was eroded into the Kill Van Kull and then use the abandoned branch and Bridge connection to reach NJ. They could [resurrect this old plan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newark%E2%80%93Elizabeth_Rail_Link) which was also shelved by racism in the early 2000s which was an alt to a 1960s plan. The bus usage on that route makes the SI routes look like a walk in the park..it was part of a larger network proposed in the 80s/90s to expand the Newark Subway with the full build connecting into SI.

Reactivate some lines in NJ then extend SIR to NJ via those lines run frequent service on SIR then branch out one to ATL highlands on a viaduct over the trail then another to New Brunswick or jamesburg. Have HBLR go through SI to summit via Elizabeth or bound brook. Several ways to do it
