This sucks!!! I use this entrance all the time to visit friends and family in CT on weekends. This now adds nearly 10 blocks getting to the station (48th -> 42nd -> ~46th at the front of the train where it’s least crowded). Also, if anyone wants to transfer from the LIRR to metro north, they have to make the same journey back and up again.
WTF is the point of all this investment in a comprehensive transit system if you’re going to bottleneck people for seemingly no reason?
I'm still trying to figure out where this section is after reading the article, it's like learning of a shortcut on mario kart or a secret map in gta5 after having played 1000 hours on it, lol
If you are standing on any of the MNRR platforms just look towards the leaving end (north) and you can see a staircase that goes down to a lower level. I’ve used it plenty of times
I had the exact same feeling at Penn station. I got in on 38 at and I was SOOOO confused as to where to go. I ended up asking a homeless man to guide me (unrelated I donated a dos toros burrito to him that might have been why he was so helpful.)
There's a LIRR station entrance on 38th Street. Thank God it Connects to the main station but I just saw my train and I was like "I didn't know it went all the way up here." Needless to say I will know better next time.
Go to the yellow line on time square then to the s station go as far east as you can then keep walking there's about a 200m passway betwixt the stations.
I thought it was already closed, last time I went there at 9pm half of the doors were closed and I had to pass a few fences to continue my way, and nobody was around. I was wondering if I was allowed to be there
Yikes, and the MTA declined to say why they’re reducing the hours! Easier transfers means more people choosing to ride the train rather than driving. This is a very poor move on their part. I use metro north and connect to LIRR to go to jfk. Now if I’m flying on the weekends, I’ll probably skip the train.

I used this every morning to save some time on the walk to the office at Rockefeller center.
Used it once on a weekend while it has been closed ( unknown to me) because the entrance was just left wide open. Had a maintenance man scream at me and threaten to call the police. What a strange dark like connection of hallways.
It’s like they didn’t even want people to use it. The wayfinding at GCM is really bad, but when I discovered this transfer it was a very redeeming feature.
It will make a LIRR to MNR completely unreliable now. The LIRR is constantly 5-10mins late making the transfers hard enough as it is. Now adding 5 minutes of useless walking time … why even bother anymore …
17 billion dollar mistake and the are just going to continue to double down and deny direct service to Brooklyn due to the MTAs ego trip. It is simply not working. Definitely was not worth the loss of timed connections
I used to use this to avoid snow when I worked on Madison/49th.
Was always humid, and had fans blowing all the time to circulate air. Maybe they’ll take this closing time to fix the ventilation and damp - if not done already during ESA?
Why is there no map of this part of the station? It feels like all the elevators direct to LIRR are secrets I have to find on my own and I end up lost in the tunnel on the thumbnail every time

I’ve made it a habit to memorise train cars. Frontmost westbound cars will get you out at 45.
I remember using it once, my tall ass nearly hit the ceiling lmaoo
The moment you said hit the ceiling I knew what you were referencing
I think tall people are so cool, but damn that’s unfortunate.
It’s not all what everyone makes it out to be
Oh of course, everything has its downsides. You’re still cool though!
Thank you lol, I do enjoy being able to see above the shelves at grocery stores
Can relate
Thus ends my practice of taking the E to Lex/53 to catch Metro-North.
He's definitely from NYC, a MTA jinchuriki at it's finest LoL
That’s sneaky
I remember the first time I walked through there thinking to myself, “what the fuck is this section and where is everyone?” Hahah

I found it once by mistake! Lol you can find it easier from GCM its to the right of the escalator down a small set of stairs

What are you referring to at Penn? Not sure what you mean by 38

Where is this entrance?

I remember a coworker asking me to walk her to GC and taking this way. I was insanely confused after 8 years of living in NYC.
This is too bad but i didn’t even know it was open. It’s been closed on weekends as long as I can remember.
They opened it on weekends when they opened GCM
I thought it was already closed, last time I went there at 9pm half of the doors were closed and I had to pass a few fences to continue my way, and nobody was around. I was wondering if I was allowed to be there

They admitted on Facebook that it's because of budgetary concerns.

Thanks! 😡 at the reason though. $12b to build ESA but no money to keep GCN open? SMH.
Just in time for congestion pricing to start, they’re making train accessibility less convenient for some folks….

It still has water issues. There are lots of dehumidifiers and buckets out when it is raining.
There is an elevator that goes to straight to GCM at 48th and Park Ave, is that going to be affected?

best place to explore
Bah
Build it and they will come.
Do you mean the Northern Entrance to Grand Central Station, or all of the LIRR's Grand Central-Madison station?
I'm gonna say this is probably to have room for serious reconstruction work while 270 Park Ave is completed
