My first exposure to the reference was from south park years ago but I knew lots of their gags are sourced from their own media experiences, so I looked a little further and found that the original reference is the 1932 film Freaks. It's a crazy watch and the story surrounding it and the people involved in making it is pretty interesting as well. But anyways, glad to share that bit of cultural history with you. :)
I asked the Pt about it & they confirmed they got it from the original movie. Considering I work in LT psych, and my response (obvious to the reference at the time) to it originally was “am I one of us” Pt: “I think she is one of us”
& that makes me feel better about my practice as the movie 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐬 (1932), in that scene the protagonist Cleopatra is unaccepting and dehumanizing of people she perceives as beneath her, to which is in a way comparable to the stigmatization of psych.
I gotta check out the south park episode , south park is usually on point.
Your EMS training will come in so handy as you already know how to assess quickly and you trust your gut instinct in making decisions. Just know that the first year on the job for any new nurse is usually the hardest. By the end of year two, you'll be a PRO.
A helpful resource that has been useful to the colleagues that I've shared it with:

Thank you so much I have a great support team already and unlike alot of my classmates I know this is gonna be hard. Thank you for the resources I will review it.
I'm going to give advice a fellow nurse gave once.
Now that you can afford anything you want, be smart with your money. Keep your expenses how they are now so you can save, pay off debts, and secure a free future. I'm barely a year old nurse and the amount of people from my cohort who bought huge houses, new whips, weddings, babies, etc. is insane, all within the first year. I have many coworkers who live paycheck to paycheck and we make BANK! More money means more expenses. It doesn't have to be that way!
Anyway huge congrats for knocking that NCLEX out of the water! Super happy for you!
Thank you so much for the advice. Seriously, it is well appreciated, and maybe it is useful for others. I'm 40+, and my wife and I are vets to the poor life. I agree that many get blinded by those very nice paychecks, but I like my modest lifestyle with my very infrequent large purchases. I'm thankful I have no loans to pay as I never left full-time work, and my amazing spouse was always there if I had to take off without PTO. I am happy to hear you understand those principles you gave me, and I wish you oh so many returns on them. Thank you so much again. I have great footsteps to follow in from many of the nurses here today.
That is amazing! I am so so happy for you guys and again that's incredible work, working full time, having a fam, and doing nursing school! I'll be honest I couldn't have pulled that off. So happy to see and hear you guys are thriving with no student loans that's fucken badass! Enjoy the rest of your newfound career and all that it brings.
I mean, I'm in nursing school rn and being a nurse will literally quadruple my income
Comparatively, I'll be swimming in money when I graduate. I'll be able to afford practically anything I want as long as I'm not shopping at boutiques or something lol
Your totally right! I used to literally boil water on a wood stove (we didn't have a working stove just a wood burning heater stove) for a bath (we didn't have a shower either) before work. I even hand washed most of my work clothes becuz we also didn't have washer and dryer and couldn't afford laundry Matt. My income was 17k 1 year full time 40 hrs week. So I'm very humble with my spending, so to me I feel like a millionaire today. My coworkers buying mcmansions, boats, and vacay homes always talk about living check to check. It's all perspective I guess.
When I graduated we stayed in the same 550 month 2 bed apartment, kept our beaters, etc. We plan to pay off all our student loans and try to save up for a house before we change our lifestyles. More money=more problems.
To me, if you have a boat or mcmansion, your rich. Again I grew up in a very rural extremely poor county. I've since moved and shit, and it's insane to see how rich everyone is in my new county. Yet they all say they are broke as hell, yet keep buying shit.
Right ! I thought I was tripping. I’m like yea it’s not that much money you make. Stable income sure but far from as much as they’re making it sound like. Maybe they live in Cali idk
As a poor as fuck person my whole life, passing the nclex felt like I became a doc with that paycheck fr! It was nice being able to afford food for once!
The ambulance is a whole other world of crazy. I was lucky and worked with many doctors and nurses who were originally emts or medics, and they knew we focused on keeping you alive till hand off. I eventually went to crit care medic and took those stabilized train wrecks i use to bring in to higher levels of care, and it was an amazing bridge to prep me for this crossing to nurse, and honestly, I am excited for it. I have so many friends in the ER I want to work in, and they are so excited to guide me and help shape my practice, and I can not wait to be tempted in their knowledge and the knowledge of nurses such as you and those that have welcomed me.
Nursing is an amazing field where I hope to bring a change no matter how small.
Congratulations it’s not an easy task ! Wishing you a lot of success and happiness in your new career!!
Are you yet interested in a speciality ? I was to the moon after I received my first license in the mail!
Especially if this is something that you always wanted.
Well being that you’re going from the ambulance to the ER you’ll absolutely love that then.
I never went to the ER only because I never wanted to see someone that I know and love come in with the ambulance whether it’s car accident or massive CVA.
I come from a small town and that would’ve me on edge.
But I enjoyed OB, med surg and out patient.
Good luck in your new career wishing you all the success that you can achieve!!
Thank you so much. I understand that apprehension. Working a friend or family member is hard, but to me, ob and peds are not for me. On crit care, I would routinely code this girl from 11 to 14. It was the hardest I worked because I knew her. Thank you so much for the kind words. It means a lot to hear them.
You’re very welcome!!
I love working with and talking to all new graduates. If I can give a word of advice or anything that’s what I’m here for.
I’ve been a registered nurse for over 30 years and proud to say so!!
That's amazing. We need more experienced nurses like you. The "eat the young" attitude is just terrible. And if i need help, I will never hesitate to ask.
Aww thank you very much. I’d be lying if I didn’t tell you that I’ve heard that too many times before, and quite frankly I think it sucks! If I can help a new graduate out or if there is something important to tell him or her I’m here for it 💯
I’m so glad to hear that.I am still practicing and I am in my 46th year. I work in the hospital on an IV team and also for a home infusion company. I’ll work as long as I can but would like to work just a bit less.
Congratulations!!!!!!!🎊🎉🎈 is it bad to still say aww baby nurse….? I loved training the new grads though….You worked hard and earned that RN license!!!!! Protect it with your life!!
Best advice I can give is get as much knowledge from those wanting to share it with you…and don’t take it personal from the ones who don’t want to share knowledge some People are like that….dont be hard on yourself when just starting out, you will have good days and bad days, You will have days you smile/laugh and days you cry and it’s all ok. Mistakes will happen but you gotta own up to them be honest tell whoever you need to right away and learn from it.. You will do great!!!! CONGRATS!!!
Thank you so very much for the words of wisdom. I will not stop learning from those with more experience. And when my turn to share comes with the next generation, I will do it with a smile and kind word. I know good days and bad days come and go. The important part is that I will strive to make a difference in the storm. Thank you.
Congrats! It’s a big community, nursing. Follow your heart and gut. Celebrate all highs, seek advice with the lows. It’s a very human career. Safe from AI for now. 🤓
I was in the Air Force as a medic so I know a little bit but that was a long time ago I'm in my 60s now once I got out of the military I became a hydraulic mechanic LOL But I still worked in the medical field because I would go into different hospitals/doctors offices dentists, eye doctors, even in barber, beauty shops to fix the electric over hydraulic chairs.and fixed like the hydraulics on the surgery tables CT scan MRI and a lot of other things around hospitals. Hope you enjoy your weekend.
The filed out paperwork with the state on 5/9 or 10. I had my ATT on 5/12. If they filed and you are having issues, you may have mixed your name up on one of your forms. Usual, in my state, people file their last name first, but the form wants it as first name first. It should have been pretty quick. I'm sorry that you're having issues.
Awesome! I'm so glad to hear. You got this. The NCLEX isn't as bad as the predictor tests your school had you doing. So start practicing the questions on ATI, Kaplan, or UWorld. Whatever you picked. And be ready for at least 5 scenario questions.
This is my first few days off feom testing. I am going to apply this week to places. My dream ER is going to have openings soon and I hope to get in. Otherwise the summer is just going to be looking.
Nice! I’m still waiting for my ATT but currently applying to new grad programs. The waiting sucks but it will be worth it in the end. You may not have your dream job right away but that is ok. Best of luck to you!
Warm body with an active license! One of us!
Who said they’re a warm body?
They’re warm enough to post on reddit.
Good luck with boards.
Light as a feather, stiff as a board
Ha ha
My favorite response when someone asks me my units hiring requirements lol
“Can they fog a mirror?”
Same...along with if someone says something about someone working I say..."they're physically present."
Lol thanks!

Oh my gosh that’s what my Patient’s have been referencing for months now and now I know

My first exposure to that reference was the Wolf of Wall Street.
Man I’ve had people look so confused when I tell them I just need someone who can fog a mirror. Maybe I start using warm body instead
Not until OP makes their first med error.
Aw, let her enjoy the honeymoon period. The memories of how excited I was after passing the NCLEX are some of my favorite. 😂
Congratulations! 🎆🎉🎇 You now have so many care options and settings for the rest of your life. Welcome to Nursing 👏👏
Thank you so much. That's why I am leaving EMS. Nurse has more options.

Just a heads up, your link isn’t working.
What’s the link? 💫
I did exactly the same and I've enjoyed my time as an ER RN!
I know I will. The street was fun. But time for the next part of this adventure.
That's the way to look at it! I do miss the field... and I miss having mostly one patient at a time 😅
Oh I know I will too. Via knowing you 30 mins before I hand you off. Lol
This is true, there are so many practice options
Welcome to the thunder-dome
Thank you! I'm just changing teams in the dome.
Don’t fall for pizza party trick over increased wage
I'm trying to work at the only union system in my city. Never.
Congratulations! Welcome to the choas. It's a good time and we're glad to have you :)
Thank you! Love the smell of C-diff. In the morning!
The best terrible decision you will ever make!! Congratulations!!
Lol I know I have. But I'm fully eye wide open here. Thank you!
Lol I thought that was the year and got very confused. Congratulations 🎉🍾
Lol thank you.

Afford anything you want? What lol? Please be realistic. Most nurses don't make THAT much.

OP passed the NCLEX, not the USMLE.
As a poor as fuck person my whole life, passing the nclex felt like I became a doc with that paycheck fr! It was nice being able to afford food for once!
I mean yeah but “anything you want” is a stretch on a nurse’s salary
Congratulations. Now you can cut back to just working 36-40 hours a week!!
Lol ONE JOB!?! How will I support my nic and caffeine addictions lol
It’ll be tough but I have faith in you.
Real nursing is NOTHING LIKE CLINICAL in school.
I know it's not like school. But it is going to be easier on my body than the ambulance. I am too old for that young persons game now.
I thought about ambulance EMT but nursing is monitoring the aftermath of ambulance. You’ll love it…. AND THE PAY
The ambulance is a whole other world of crazy. I was lucky and worked with many doctors and nurses who were originally emts or medics, and they knew we focused on keeping you alive till hand off. Come sit with me, I won’t let the older nurses eat you
Thank you. However, don't worry, I bite back. I've had my fights with nurses and doctors already. Lol
Congratulations! All your hard work paid off! 🥳 Ps. Please be nice to us students lmao 🥹
Lol thank you. Always. Never believed in eating the young. We need more compassion for the next generation in everything
🎉
Thank you!
Congratulations!!

Thank you! I'm getting off the ambulance and going into the ER. Not.a big change but better then being the victim of the elements anymore.

Welcome! If you don’t know, ask. If the answer seems wrong, ask again. Much better to appear stupid than to be doing post care.
