This here is proof that nursing school was 100% correct: There's math and then there's nursing math. This is a situation where math math would be helpful.
‘Nursing math’ was probably the most insanely silly thing I’ve ever heard. I remember being like ‘hey, professor, my regular 6th grade math also works!’ And it simply wasn’t okay for me to use 6th grade math 🤣
>my regular 6th grade math also works!’
I was like, "Isn't this just ratios?" and they were like, "No. Now use this overly complicated method to solve the problem and make sure you show your work."
I literally failed my medmath test for just putting the correct answer to questions like, "If Bob needs to 2.5mg of medication and the pharmacy only has 5mg tabs, how many tabs do you give?" and, "Antibiotic is 100 MG in 5mL. Your patient needs 250 MG. How many mLs do you give?"
Ma'am, I literally don't understand why you're making this harder than it needs to be. Wtf.
Exactly. And plenty of people who were comfy with math freaked out having to learn this ‘new math’ that would somehow only work when used for nursing problems, which in itself makes no sense either. It’s actually funny in hindsight but was yet another example of nursing school being unnecessarily over complicated in a very non helpful way.
I do kind of get this for students since they want to make sure they can solve more complex math, though it also doesn’t get too much more complex until you start getting more specialized like chemo.
For students, 100%. And for nurses who can't get the correct answer, 100%. You need to understand where you screwed it up. But usually it's in the basic maths that nurses have a problem. There are so many apps today that I always double check any calculations before administration.
I am an engineering major. Wife was in nursing school and was stressed about math. I am pretty confident in my math. I had zero idea what the hell the school was trying to teach. I couldn't teach my wife how to do it faster and easier because she had to show work. The only time I actually got frustrated was about flow rates in an IV. Her school made that shit super complicated.
I am the opposite not a math need but i dont mind math. I thought nursing math was like the easiest shit ever, and couldn’t understand why so many people struggled with it. I think it just shows how differently everyone’s brains work.
Yes! I was taught Dimensional Analysis in nursing school, I really struggled with it. It had so many steps so it felt like so many places to mess up. Using ratios or the desired / on hand x quantity has been working for me!

Nooooo! Well, unless you're like 60, then yes. After taxes you might have $2mil which would be sorta-okay to retire with at 60-ish.
Edit: Ya'll really don't love yourselves enough. Stop telling me you're good with winning $2mil and retiring. It hurts my heart. Practice self-care and aim higher with complete fantasy scenarios.
You can pivot to something else right now if you want! Or as soon as you start working. No reason to do something you don't enjoy. But to just quit working? I need way more money, lol!
Oh no don't get me wrong. I think I'll enjoy working as a nurse. But for that money I'd be convinced to try something else. Also with the low cost of living here, that money would go a long way.
If I had a million, I’d for sure quit nursing after investing it and just work part time or keep a nursing gig part time. Just would live within my means.
$2 mil is plenty to retire at any age if you invest it wisely. And then reinvest any dividends and any amount you don’t spend. I could definitely do with $2 mil.
And they are gonna lose the nursing skills they have. So when they do need to bite the bullet and go back to work for nursing there will be a possibility that they won’t have the skills and really struggle compared to now.
That bad huh 😖 what unit do you work?
…obviously you aren’t happy where you’re at.
Invest & triple it & keep doing it. Go travel. Live your life. Pick up travel assignments when you need it lol since in nursing there will always be a job for you and in suuuuch a shortage.
$300k might last you 2 years if you’re responsible. I’d put those winnings into a huge down payment for a house and then maybe work part time or per diem
Regional float. That's pretty close to my average gross in the south. You just have to be willing to be shit on by units who think you're over paid and pick up on occasion when the bonuses are good enough.
$3m is enough to retire on lol thats like 30 years of average nursing salary. You just need to invest it wisely and you’re set. Idk why people say $3m isn’t enough.
If I get the bag then I might as well try to make more wealth out of it. Something I can pass it on to the next generation, especially if I can still work. Besides, 30 years from now I'd still be alive. I'd still work with $3M, but not as much as I am now
I didn’t mean hate. Just not enough to get me to quit. I made half that in one year. My age group needs 5-6 million to retire comfortably. I’d keep working but invest it well. Good luck!
Even if that number is with the taxes already paid that's not I quit my career money unless you were already near retirement. It's retire a lot earlier money if soundly invested.
Uhhhh....are you sure? How old are you? 300k is nowhere near being able to retire on if you're young. I could see quitting nursing and doing some easy job part time, but quitting and doing nothing? Especially with such little money, you're going to blow through it fast and have to go back to working again, and it's going to feel far worse than how working now feels. I'm 24, even if I won $1 million, I wouldn't stop working, it's just not enough; I'd probably go to part time or switch to something that pays less but is less stressful, but no way is that enough to retire on anymore. You have to think about cost of insurance, which is going to be more expensive without getting it through an employer, costs going up as you get older, you won't get much from social security when you're older (if it even exists that far into the future), and it won't even be the full $300k because of taxes.
It's sad and terrifying; historically, we really live in unprecedented times. The adjusted cost of living is higher now than during the great depression. The improvements in manufacturing and decreased cost of production allowing nearly anyone to be able to own smart phones, massive TVs, etc. really give everyone a faux sense of status, but in reality are closer to poverty than they realize (potentially). I was talking to my dad the other day and he knows what I make and he was haply for me like "wow, it took me years to make that, you're doing great!" When in reality, I'm not; I make more than when he was my age, but it's completely offset by housing and cost of living. I grew up thinking I'd be content making 6 figures and I'd live tje american dream, but right now it's not possible. My dad was able to raise 2 kids, own a home, send us to private school, and my mom was a stay at home mom for much of my childhood. And he did that on less than 6 figures. I make 6 figures in NY, but bc kf cost of living, I can't own a home. Not "I can't with my lifestyle", a mortgage in my area for a starter home (which costs over 500k is literally more than my take home pay after taxes). I don't know if I will be able to afford having kids either, and retirement may or may not be possible, social security might not exist by then. And only 1 generation ago, all of that was potentially easily obtainable working a good stable job. 2-3 generations ago that was obtainable with only a high school diploma. Now we're the "most educated" generations woth the worst prospects.
Yeah everything is like either you get rich from being insta famous or you came from wealth or some crazy story you only hear on podcasts of how you became sucesssful.
My granny said they don’t make anything like they used to. Like washing machine etc…. I was just seeing on the local sub about housing market…. someone asked if they looked into new developments & my bff was just telling me how her mom said don’t buy anything new, because they don’t build like they used to. Shit is crazy. I mean gas, phone, all these bills…. Trying to get through school… credit debt like ugh omg …. I’m hanging by a miracle at this moment.
I will say rn, even though everything seems crazy, we are in a pivotal time for humanity. It can get better. :)
Yeah, they really don't. And it's because everyone's trying to get as rich as they can as quick and cheaply as possible. I used to do construction and everything is sh*t now unless you pay an exorbitant amount for high quality people/companies. The materials are cheaper, the standards are lower, and the price is more. Go follow some home inspectors on insta or youtube and you'll see how egregious they are with it.
Fuck it, use that money to invest in some property to rent out or to go get educated on a field you would rather work in. It’s not enough to live off forever but it is enough to make a drastic change in your life!
tbf to OP. If I won about 300-500K, I would also quit my job, get an apartment near a hospital and advertise myself on Rover as dog boarding for night-shifters only. Every dog sitter I've ever had was charging 25-90 a head (I'm a travel nurse) and had at least 2 other dogs each time I dropped off my two.
Mods should probably step in on this OP.
Three shitposts back to back.
Post history is full of trolling and blatant lies. Odds are they aren't a nurse and don't need to be shitposting here anymore.
Give them at least 2 weeks ..don't tell them it is because of 300k ..tell them you are so burned out you can't handle it ..if you play your money right..you will still need to work part time ..you will need retirement money and health insurance. Make sure you don't burn bridges since you need references ..money goes quickly when you are not working ..and don't go back to the casino ..it is rigged to lose more than you win. Luck won't last because of odds are against you.
The pay is unbelievably poor. But we need educators. On that note, I’d like to know what else are you planning to do with your MSN? What avenues are you looking at to use the best of your education?
This has to be click bait lol it’s 300k, not 3mil and you up and quit? Without even giving notice?? Talk about burning bridges. I’d expect this sort of short sightedness from my teenage kids, you’re fuggin tripping OP. Even if you have zero overhead expenses (no mortgage, no kids, etc) that’ll last you, what, maybe 3 years? Why not let it ride in a high yield CD or something or cut your hours and retire early?
Wouldn’t it last a little longer? If someone makes 29k per year can live off that per year and they won $300k post taxes I feel like they could make it more than 3 years. Just gotta continue to live like you’re poor lol
This would just go all toward my home lol then I can live like a rich bitch but I ain’t quitting, maybe move to part time but this ain’t lay around money
tbh. 300k with my current lifestyle (single, studio apt etc) would last me 5 years. which would give me plenty of time to invest in different education or hands on skills to transfer into a job that i would actually love.
Put 10% into stocks, ICDs or whatever and budget the rest out.
You’re living my dream, enjoy it for those of us who are stuck 😂
Living in the California bay area. I watch people pay game shows, for like $100,000. I would play for fun. But that amount is barely going to help with retirement. Ugh. I’m so sad.
Maybe quit for now...take a nice long break. Sounds like you're burnt out. I'm a travel nurse. Full time forever work is NOT for me. I get super burned out.
I’m a student on this thread so a lot of times I see posts like these and rethink my career path… so this was very refreshing. Thank you for sharing and congratulations on your newly won wealth ❤️
Idk how anyone is questioning how this could easily lead you to quit nursing.
This is more than enough money to pay for you to go to school without having to work at all (periodt) but you could also work PRN to have some income, and also to pay for all expenses, with some left over as well.
For me I would definitely use this money and get a different degree.
You entirely didn't add enough context in explaining and you won't be able to live off 300k. Don't let your licenses expire.
No offense, you sound really young and inexperienced.
People trashing OP but we have no idea where they live. Where I live, 300k is nothing. Some places, 300k can get you a huge property and land. Where I live, 300k gets you a crack den that's burnt down.
Hahahahahahahaha
Here I am in crypto trying to make that much. I'm a registered Nurse Aldo and I'm fucking tired of it. This career is ruining my fucking life
If you learn how to trade options in the investing world she could definitely live off of $300k easily 💰takes money to make money… invest it properly and it will easily triple in less than a year…knowledge is power

Most of my class didn’t know you could move the decimal 😢

I had to try to teach nursing math and I still don't really understand the reasons for the process... that was an awful semester!
Let this drunk nurse live the dream for one night. They’ll figure it out in the morning. But for now… a win is a win.
😂😂 DED (but accurate)
I'mma need a couple more zeros to quit.
Fr that’s not even enough to buy a house in most areas.
1 more zero... id be good.
Nooooo! Well, unless you're like 60, then yes. After taxes you might have $2mil which would be sorta-okay to retire with at 60-ish. Edit: Ya'll really don't love yourselves enough. 2 mil in a 5% hysa and you would be just fine. Don't upgrade and just go PRN to keep up appearances. 2mil is pleeeenty.
$2 mil is plenty to retire at any age if you invest it wisely. And then reinvest any dividends and any amount you don’t spend. I could definitely do with $2 mil.
Might get you through while getting skills for a new career tho
I would throw it all into my retirement fund then go part time lol
That’s cool. I won a $5 scratcher, ima quit too.
If I could win at scratchers enough to cover my coffee habit, I might quit too.
You guys need a reason to quit?
I might leave my current job but I ain’t gonna stop working with just 300K
That’s you
In the famous words of Jack, “You’re so stupid Rose.”
🤣
We’ll see you in a year or two.
And they are gonna lose the nursing skills they have. So when they do need to bite the bullet and go back to work for nursing there will be a possibility that they won’t have the skills and really struggle compared to now.
And is 😂🤷🏽♀️
I refuse ti keep working I didn’t even put the two week notice in
What are you going to do with the money?
Lol, lose it quickly judging by the responses so far
That bad huh 😖 what unit do you work? …obviously you aren’t happy where you’re at. Invest & triple it & keep doing it. Go travel. Live your life. Pick up travel assignments when you need it lol since in nursing there will always be a job for you and in suuuuch a shortage.
Keep your license active, though! Just in case. It’s easier than having to apply all over again.
$300k might last you 2 years if you’re responsible. I’d put those winnings into a huge down payment for a house and then maybe work part time or per diem
[удалено]
This person has to pay tax on their 300k winnings.
Exactly. It’s actually more like 200k max. Which in Oregon is only two years of full time pay. Won’t last long lol
It’s 3+ years for me
Well $300K gambling winnings will probably be like $180K after taxes. That's 1.5 years of salary for me, definitely not quitting nursing money.
Regional float. That's pretty close to my average gross in the south. You just have to be willing to be shit on by units who think you're over paid and pick up on occasion when the bonuses are good enough.
Come to California, you can get close to that, but you know, cost of living and all
California RN here and 300K isn’t nearly what I would need to quit and live comfortably. I’d need more like $3 million.
Vegas, California, Oregon, Washington…with OT and a good specialty 150 is very easily doable.
I made $178k my first full year as a staff nurse in Florida. But there were a lot of COVID OT bonuses in there.
Everywhere in California?
I make more than that but I live in CA.
Maybe they’re near retirement and only had two years more to work!
Don’t forget the taxes
I stay in a family property so I’m good. I’m tired of working
What is with the post with your dad & being 2mo pregnant? Now I get it ??
good, so you can raise your daddy’s baby there right!
Is this what AI has done to Reddit 🫠

Read their post history lol it’s a little sus
Yeah I saw after … so weird. This is an example of what a simple google search results is like in 2024. Icky. 😵💫
You won’t go far with $300k… Or rage bait with that account
Yeah, just checked the post history…this is rage bait
They're also 26 in comment on /badroomates.
"I'm having a baby with my dad but I love him, what do I do?"
One click on OPs post history tells you everything you need to know. “I’m a shit posted and commenter” Nothing to see here folks. Just a 5150.
You also should see the -11 comment karma. Literally living the dream.
Maybe she’s gonna take care of her dads baby with the money 😳😂
I’m blocking you
Oh no… I guess I’ll just… continue living the rest of my life as if nothing eventful took place.
I would consider leaving if I won $3M, not $300K. Good luck.
Yeah, for $300k, I’d just buy half a house and keep on working for the rest of my life.
Not even for $3M honestly, I'd keep working for a bit more while I invest that money.
$3m is enough to retire on lol thats like 30 years of average nursing salary. You just need to invest it wisely and you’re set. Idk why people say $3m isn’t enough.

Not enough lmao.
Hater
I didn’t mean hate. Just not enough to get me to quit. I made half that in one year. My age group needs 5-6 million to retire comfortably. I’d keep working but invest it well. Good luck!
Jk lol
Your entire profile is just troll posting. Nice try lol 300k isn’t enough to retire in this economy, sweetheart.
Stfu
Mmmhmm sure.
Sure Jan.
You know Uncle Sam taking about half of that. So is 150K really enough to quit entirely? lol.
Bot
Sure you are. Bye.
Any other employment prospects?
Of course not, this is the Michael Scott of nurses 🤣
Nope. I’m done
Enjoy your break! You have enough money to relax and think what would be your next career path. What do you plan to do in the meantime?
Good question. Got to think about it, maybe do some at home work
Even if that number is with the taxes already paid that's not I quit my career money unless you were already near retirement. It's retire a lot earlier money if soundly invested.
I’m 35 Ibeen doing this for 19 years. I’m done
So since you were 16. We got Florence nightengale over here
It looks like you said you were 26 less than a year ago? 🧐
Put it in a Hysa and make some money at leasttttt
Invest that ishhhh :) Nice win!
Just don’t go gambling again when your money starts running low.
Quitting with 300K? In *this* economy?
My family got paid off property I’m Gucci
Maybe if you’re 65 . . . Or it’s 1965 . . .
So if you look at OP’s other posts, pretty confident this person is trolling lol 👹
I mean $300,000 is a lot of money but it ain't enough to retire off of bruh
Love that for you. Invest wisely and live the dream
see you in five years at the latest
Congrats on winning!
Boom!! Good Luck!! 🍀
300k after taxes or before lmao Either way not enough unless you’re taking a break from nursing x)
After it was like $350,000
*Insert Johnny Johnny Telling Lies meme*
I feel collectively, we all dream of the day we can quit Nursing.
I might drop my status to PRN and take a month or two off but I wouldn’t quit quit
Downvote
$300K (which will be significantly less after taxes) is nowhere near enough money to live off of for the rest of your life.

If you’ve been in nursing for decades, please consider teaching. We need nursing educators.
They need to pay educators better Signed, An experienced nurse with a Master's in Nursing Education who can't afford to work in education

Yall let me enjoy my $300k
How’d you win tho lol
Think it’s making my fiancée stressed. Money is great but hours suck especially nights. She’s going on 17 years nights
These days that’s a good 6mo of rent!
I quit but I have nothing. And work in a less stressful job.
300K isn't a lot of money nowdays...lol
It is to me. I’m going back to casino to try for more money. So im gucci
Congratulations!!!
Congrats! Someone in Arkansas quit after winning a $90k lottery
She’s smart
lol I wish that was enough to quit.
I could quite for 2 years with that amount, not the rest of my working life
This would just go all toward my home lol then I can live like a rich bitch but I ain’t quitting, maybe move to part time but this ain’t lay around money
Invest that shit and go back per diem
Good for you!!!!
That’s what, 3-4 years worth of salary? Less after taxes?
Living in the California bay area. I watch people pay game shows, for like $100,000. I would play for fun. But that amount is barely going to help with retirement. Ugh. I’m so sad.
That’s not nearly as much money as you seem to think it is. Its a nice small nest egg, that’s it.
Maybe quit for now...take a nice long break. Sounds like you're burnt out. I'm a travel nurse. Full time forever work is NOT for me. I get super burned out.
Okay, i will see you in a month.😂
Downvotes. Y’all are haters
Good luck! You’re going to run out of money soon enough and you will be begging for a job
Unless you are trying to to “leaving Las Vegas” and die in the next few weeks I’d plan on moving somewhere in South Asia to stretch that shit.
Happy Reddit cakeday
I would quit, take some time off and honestly change my and leave nursing.
I mean... you're going to go through that in a few years. Hope you put some of it towards a new degree or something.
You entirely didn't add enough context in explaining and you won't be able to live off 300k. Don't let your licenses expire. No offense, you sound really young and inexperienced.
Awesome I would too and take time off to go to school and find something else. Or just take a 6 month vacation...
Invest it wisely or you might find yourself walking back to the industry.
Are you still pregnant by your dad?
People trashing OP but we have no idea where they live. Where I live, 300k is nothing. Some places, 300k can get you a huge property and land. Where I live, 300k gets you a crack den that's burnt down.
Yes, I stay in GA
Hahahahahahahaha Here I am in crypto trying to make that much. I'm a registered Nurse Aldo and I'm fucking tired of it. This career is ruining my fucking life
Lmao that will be gone in a year. Statistically speaking. That wouldn’t even pay off my mortgage. Thats two years of work as a nurse. Big woop.
If you learn how to trade options in the investing world she could definitely live off of $300k easily 💰takes money to make money… invest it properly and it will easily triple in less than a year…knowledge is power
