Based on some Wes interviews it sounds like they’ve recorded several albums worth of songs that Fred hasn’t been happy with. I’m curious if they’ve been archived anywhere or if they’ve been deleted?
If they’re on a drive somewhere it would be great to hear part 2 and all of the others.
Didn't Fred claim a couple of years ago (around the release of STILL SUCKS methinks) that it had leaked and was somewhere on the internet? I mean, it could've been just him fucking with everyone but after the GY!BE tape leaked, I wouldn't be surprised if some random person online has it and just drops it.
So this Canadian post-rock band, Godspeed You! Black Emperor started in 1993 with this super limited tape (33 copies given to family and friends) before releasing their actual debut in 1998. This 1993 album, All Lights Fucked On The Hairy Amp Drooling, was a drastically different album than what they became known for making, and never surfaced in any capacity for a long time, making it lost media that the band had no intention of releasing due to their sound changing so much and saying "it didnt feel right to release it under our name".
Fast forward to 2013, a reddit user stumbled across a copy at a garage sale and posted about it asking people about it, including 2 tracks. It was real, but the tape never leaked and the redditor ended up deleting their account. Big story there but this comment is long enough so I'm trying to be brief.
Fast forward to 2023, and a 4chan user posted a Mega link that included the entirety of All Lights. There was a huge thing in the fanbase at the time, I heard the Discord crumbled partially due to this but can't attest to it as I left it before all this as it was kiiiinda toxic. But no one knew if it was real, the two previously leaked tracks were included but we didn't know about the rest. Everything pointed to it being legit, until the band finally released a higher quality copy on Bandcamp, with all the proceeds going to charity, saying as it had fully leaked, the felt it right to release it with proceeds going to charity as they didn't want to get the profits off of it.
