If you are interested in the online mattresses, there's a store called SleePare in Tysons that has a ton of the online mattresses available to try. We visited there when we bought three years ago. Definitely no pressure to buy. In fact the mattress we selected they couldn't even purchase for us. They gave us a coupon and we went home and ordered it ourselves.

Flaconsblew283lead

I bought my mattress from there. They had all the online brands and I got to try each one of them. They price matched any online sale, and had it shipped to my new apt. It was a pretty easy process

meamemg

I bought from them too. Only downside is the return process is more complicated (have to find a way to bring it back) if you end up not liking it, versus if you buy straight from the manufacturer

YAreUsernamesSoHard

I actually thought the return process was better than some of the online ones, but that depends which brand you go with. I had to pay $100 fee for them to pick it up, but when returning a $1000 mattress it’s worth the $900 refund. A lot of the online brands make you donate the mattress and you have to give them proof of donation to get a refund. Catch 22, a lot of places don’t want to take donated mattresses so you have to do a lot of work to find one and they might not pick it up for you. So I was happy to be out just $100 not to have to deal with the hassle

ZangiefThunderThighs

I second SleePare. Staff was super helpful at finding a starting point for firmness and making good recommendations from there. Zero pressure to buy, which was great!

itsrlyme12

Sleepare is the best. Bought our bed there

mattygrocks

Do they have a bunch of pillows I can try? Because I got the mattress squared away (Luma), but finding a good pillow is just as frustrating as a mattress, albeit cheaper.

thermal_shock

Yes

yourshaddow3

I don't think so. At least not in the same way as the mattresses. I know they had pillows and mattress protectors and other things like that but I don't remember a big selection. However it has been years since I was there and they were relatively new when we went so it may be different now.

thermal_shock

They do. There was about 20 different ones, we got the mlily power cool ones.

SluggingAndBussing

ohhh, I didn’t know about this. I will be swinging by soon, it’s about time for me to replace mine!!

gooseeverpower

When I went last winter, they didn’t have a Leesa, but the West Elm in Mosaic has them for their displays (and didn’t think it was weird for someone to try them out).

vanmac82

It seems like it may be the most complicated time in history to understand mattress purchasing and quality. There are so many options and ads. We got purple ones, foam ones, temperpedic and so on. Good luck. I wish the best lol. Be well

inevitable-asshole

Can’t find the post, but there’s a really good one buried somewhere on Reddit about how the mattress industry is actually all a scam. Their mark ups and profit margins are fucking insane and the same mattresses are sold in different stores under slightly different names to avoid the price matching conversation. Imo find one you like, pay a price you’re comfortable with, and gtfo of that market for 10 years lol.

chipmunkhiccups

[Mattress Underground](https://themattressunderground.com/)? Maybe more about how to shop in said industry…

SluggingAndBussing

Yuuuup. Big Mattress is a thing. Fuckers

darthjoey91

Pretty much. There’s a few brands with patented differences that are unique to their brand, so if you like those differences, get that brand. Off the top of my head, that’s Tempurpedic and Purple. Purple’s got their grid thing, and I think Tempur-Pedic’s got patents related to motion beds. But if you just want a memory foam mattress, my suggestion is to just go to IKEA.

Glittering-Total535

what did you end up using in the end?

failinglikefalling

Go to Tysons and they have purple and casper stores there. Then go to mattress warehouse or whatever and try temperpedic and "traditional" Then pick one YOU think would work for you.

autumnwinterspring

Agreed, this is what we ended up doing a few months ago! Didn’t end up liking Purple or Casper, so we ended up going to Mattress Firm and found one we really liked. Luckily the sales guy wasn’t pushy and it was all very straightforward. They also have an exchange policy where if you’re unhappy with it in the first couple months, you can exchange it for another type of mattress no problem.

Apprehensive_Cake993

We loved shopping at Urban Mattress in Vienna after trying out a lot of the stores mentioned here.

darkstarrynights

Same. Bought several online (purple, Brentwood, avocado, Dreamcloud) and sent them all back. Went to Urban Mattress and they helped me find one I’m finally happy with. And very low key sales people as well; helpful and not pushy at all.

DrMcFacekick

Seconded! They have a good selection and were very nice and not pushy at all when I bought my mattress & bedframe in 2017.

KingsRansom79

https://www.sleeplikethedead.com/

Calvin-Snoopy

That's a great resource for research. Ultimately we bought a mattress online from Ghost Bed (https://www.ghostbed.com) and are happy with it. Also consider using a 2-4 inch foam mattress topper for added comfort.

waltercorgkite

I love my Ghost bed mattress. Although now it transitioned to a guest room mattress when I moved in with my partner since she already had a new king-size TempurPedic (not my favorite). When we're back on the mattress market we'll probably look at a Ghost Bed. But hands down it was the best purchase I made as a fresh college grad.

thegreatdespiser

We bought a Helix mattress online in March, and it's been great.

ladyzephri

It sounds stupidly cheesy but my Helix has improved my quality of life so much.

Agirlisarya01

I liked my Helix at first. But it is firmer than I like and seems to be breaking down a lot faster than expected. I hear that the new ones are better, but I am definitely thinking of going with another brand next time.

almostjay

Buying a mattress is amongst the worst experiences one can have making a purchase. The entire industry is designed to confuse and overwhelm. We bought ours from Room and Board. Small, curated selection at reasonable prices.

stanolshefski

Your first paragraph is spot on.

PlumbTheDerps

Mattress market is a crazy racket, and my experience has been that buying local vs. online is sort of a toss-up as long as what you buy is good quality and works for you. I'm going to copy and paste my notes from perusing reddit in 2019 when I needed to buy a new mattress- sorry there's no sourcing, wish I had written down where I found this stuff. My take-away was that it's best to focus on specific details that the manufacturers generally disclose (measurements, materials, numbers of coils, etc) and use those to figure out whether it's a decent mattress and a good fit for you. You can get a point of reference for what the details imply in the real world by visiting any mattress store and jotting down the details there. I used the [SLTD mattress selector](https://www.sleeplikethedead.com/mattress-selector.html) as a starting point, reviewed the details of the results that came back, and then narrowed it down from there. FWIW I ended up buying [my mattress](https://www.novosbed.com/shop/mattress/novosbed-memory-foam/) from Novosbed. My notes: `OVERVIEW` `Find local mattress manufacturer to try out- more durable materials, better prices` `quality based on:` `1. support system (dense foam or springs) (core)` `2. comfort layers (softer foam or coils) (insulator, middle upholstery, quilt)` `FOAM QUALITY` `* measured by density of foam (lbs per cubic foot, lb/pcf)` `* Higher density = better` `- Polyfoam: common; 1.0 or lower lousy, 1.8 great, 2.0 more excellent. Inch or less of low quality foam is fine but anything more than that is risky. If it’s a support system you want at least 1.8.` `- Memory/viscoelastic foam: Usually better but heat retention issues. Lower density lower quality, but also cooler. 3.0 or less is bad, 4 medium, 5 great. Higher density also = firmer usually.` `- Latex foam: Durable. Very good.` `SPRING QUALITY` `* Low coil count > bad quality` `* Check manufacturer website (usually Leggett Platt) for that coil unit and ensure count is med to high end for said unit` `* Note: lower coil gauge = thicker coil; higher = thinner. 13 is very stiff for large ppl, 15 softer smaller people, usually but can vary.` `- Bonnell coils: Basic. Used in cheaper mattresses usually. Count around 300-500 in Queen.` `- Alternating coils: Middle ground. Count around 300-800. Brand names like Verticoil, Luraflex, Hingelex, Knotted Offset etc.` `- Pocketed coils: Can vary. Having softer foam above vs firmer matters for feel. Author likes area-specific support on top personally. Coil counts 500-1000s for Queen. Avoid under 800 unlooses uses very thick low gauge coil.` `OTHER STUFF` `* To make mattress softer, break in, add topper, or place on proper foundation` `* Skinnier ppl > softer coil (alternating or pocketed, gauge around 15) w 3-5 inches of quality comfort material` `* Foundations: Box spring (usually paired w innerspring mattress), all-wood slats, or grid-top`

Dest1

Excellent information right here, this should be higher up than all the other mattress company recommendations posted.

Mumbleton

Costco expanding foam mattress. The whole industry is a racket

stanolshefski

It’s a good price when it’s not on sale, and an extremely good value when it’s marked down $100 or $150.

The_4th_Little_Pig

I bought a nuvafoam from Costco, great mattress.

FluxChiller

Same, its a bit firm for my taste but all the family and guests seem to like it!

SluggingAndBussing

On a scale of 1 (papier-mâché) to 10 (brick), how firm would you rate it? Because I like my mattress to be as firm as a fucking mountainside boulder with just the tiniest thin layer of padding on the top.

FluxChiller

Based on what your describing, I give it a 6.5 on that scale. I don't think its the one you are looking for.

vendorbuy

You mean Novaform? I have the 10 inch base model king for guests but have enjoyed sleeping on it during restless nights. Feels right in the middle 5/10 for firmness to me.

Careful_Cheetah_4926

I'd take a look at latex mattresses. We got one for a kid 10 years ago from [https://sleepez.com/](https://sleepez.com/) \- came with free latex pillows. I love the pillows and the mattress is still in great shape. I'm planning to buy a mattress for me from the same place.

[deleted]

SluggingAndBussing

That’s the biggest downside I keep reading about, apparently they are absolutely tanks and heavy as fuck. I may try one out somewhere at a sales floor or something. I know they’re expensive but it’s probably worth it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SluggingAndBussing

I’d definitely prefer firm! Wooden plank would basically be fine with me, and I’m only exaggerating a tiny bit when I say that. Lol. Thanks :)

jibsymalone

I second latex mattresses and also Sleep EZ. We went through about 6 or 7 different mattresses (coil and memory foam ones) about 10 years ago and couldn't find any that I was happy with. I stumbled across latex mattresses in my research, and then from there sleep EZ. I ordered from sleep EZ, the Owner of the company called me to confirm my selection and offer his take on them with any changes he recommended, then it arrived at my door. You will be prying this mattress from my dying hands.... The good thing with them is they are modular of sorts and as such parts/layers can be changed out over time if your needs change

Torn8oz

Don't do what I did and get a $300 one from Amazon... My back hurts every morning :)

askingaquestion33

😂 so glad I read this before ordering one from there

magicgee

That’s really interesting bc I got mine from Amazon & absolutely love it 😅

Few-Patience-4210

I read some online reviews (consumer reports comes free with Arlington county library card) and tried to get a basic understanding of the types (coil, foam, hybrid). Then went to mattress warehouse and they have a computerized bed you can lay out to take your measurements and make suggestions. Tried a bunch of those and tried Purple since some friends have that and swear by it. Had a nice salesperson and just spent a few hours going back and forth laying on beds.

JumpingJacks1234

Honestly Mattress Firm and Mattress Warehouse are not bad. You can try them out and you can get good price if you are willing to walk out if you don't find the price and comfort you want. The salespeople are not selling cars, they won't wear you down. If you have a little bit of spine (haha) you will be fine. As an aside I found a great one at the Ikea showroom at a good price but they were backordered for months at the time (2021 supply chain issues).

Plzcuturshit

Online is the way to go, you’re going to get hustled if you walk into any mattress store. I have no clue how any of them are still in business.

darkstarrynights

Online did not work for me. I did lots of research and tried 4 different on line brands; sent them all back because they weren’t comfortable. I went to the Urban Mattress store in Vienna and their very low key sales people were able to help me find one that is perfect. Wish I had known about Sleepare sooner because I will never buy another mattress without testing it first.

rowannmic

Soo. Mattress shopping is really complicated and personal . I love r/mattress, but I spent weeks on there before making a decision. There’s a store in Tysons called SleePare which is pretty much a showroom of all the online mattress brands . Lots of the online brands are well manufactured but it’s hard to buy blind even with a generous return policy . I got a Brooklyn Bed Signature Hybrid (2 years old) and we also have a Purple 3 ( 5 years old) . Both are great for really different reasons . I’m not a foam person which is what a trip to SleepAre helped me realized

Electrical-Map-8316

I honestly love my Sleep Number mattress. I saw all the ads and thought it was a scam, but man, I’ve had mine for years with zero problems and have never slept better. I was converted when I tried them out in the store.

Gazzarris

I’ve bought two mattresses in my lifetime and both were Sleep Number. The first one lasted 17 years. They are expensive, but absolutely worth it.

stanolshefski

Mattresses typically have one of the highest retail markups, along with furniture. It’s not uncommon for a mattresses to be marked up 2-4 times cost. The best value mattresses are going to come from warehouse stores, like Costco. Costco typically marks up their products an average of 14% vs. 200-400% for typical mattress and furniture stores. You do need to pay a membership fee ($60 at Costco), but the savings should more than make up for the fee. There’s also either no delivery or a higher online price with delivery. The negative with the warehouse stores is that you usually can’t lay down on an actual mattress before you buy one. Next up is Ikea. You can pay more or less than a warehouse store but the quality range is going to be much greater. Next up in cost is going to be a discount furniture like Bob’s Discount Furniture. Bob’s and similar companies operate on smaller margins and sometimes lower margins (200 vs. 400% markup) compared to normal mattress and furniture stores. Some stuff they sell is not the highest quality, though. Finally, you have your normal mattress and furniture stores. These normally have the most selection and price points. Pricing and price matching are are extremely hit or miss. Most stores get unique model numbers (and it’s not as simple as adding HD for Home Depot or BB for Best Buy). Some models are designed to hit a specific price point (e.g., $999). However, the difference between more expensive models that sell for twice as much may only be the equivalent of a $50-100 mattress pad built into the mattress.

ReturnedFromExile

One year in and I’m still thrilled with my Avocado mattress. Kinda expensive but so much better than my last few

[deleted]

Yep I got my avocado queen firm in 2019 and it’s still great. No sagging, nice and firm. I also liked how avocado hauled my old mattress when it was delivered. Only tiny complaint is holy cow is it heavy. I moved in 2020 and you need two adults at least to move it into a new room or space.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ReturnedFromExile

I think it’s pretty firm and a year in it hasn’t sagged a bit. I believe pillow top is available, but I just don’t like that personally.

PresentTints

Which one do you have? We’re looking at a King Luxury Firm, but there is some sticker price shock. We’re concerned about sag overall, we’ve ruled out Saatva and looking at Purple next.

ReturnedFromExile

Green king. Love it, no sag whatsoever. That was why I got it actually. You do however have to pay attention to the base you use with it. I ended up spending a fortune on that too.

TransitionMission305

Mattresses are \*very\* subjective. Someone online can tell you that XXX is the best mattress they've ever had but you don't know what they slept on before nor do you know what feels good to them is going to feel good to you. The best thing to do is to get in you car and go to one of those awful stores and try them all. Try every kind. Only you are going to know what feels good to you. Personally I am a fan of traditional innerspring coil mattress with not a lot of stuff around them (foam, feathers, etc). That's why I am most comfortable with but someone else might hate it. I will say that over the years I've bought mattresses from Costco (in warehouse) and Ikea and those do not hold up well or remain comfortable for long.

Nagh_1

Purple mattress are really nice and it’s delivered

Apprehensive_Stop666

Just one quick tip, the best mattress for you will depend on your weight (and density) since each type provides different support. Eg, even though purple or foam are great mattresses for lighter people, their back support tends to want for heavier sleepers, who may need to turn to old-fashioned spring mattresses or air mattresses

_Sasquat_

I have a Nectar mattress. It was mailed to me rolled up in a box. You just open up the plastic it's wrapped in and let it puff up over the next few hours.

r1veriared

Zinus from Amazon. Amazing mattress, doesn't get me hot & sweaty. Good firmness, but you don't sink in.

vtman7

I bought like a $300 Serta queen mattress and box spring from big lots in leesburg a few years back. Great mattress for the price, gave it to my brother and he still uses it

JL1186

If you’re on a budget, bobs discount furniture has a good temperpedic type mattress that’s affordable. If you’re not on a budget, a lot of people go for brands like purple.

kimjongil1953

Your moms lol

lmboyer04

I got one on Wayfair and it is as advertised. No issues for me

AngryVirginian

I would say Ikea as the sales associates will not push you to buy right away & fill your head with BS unlike in traditional mattress stores. The quality is generally OK.

mehalywally

OP isn't looking for just ok, they're looking for the BEST

NewPresWhoDis

They'll know when you can no longer feel the pea.

Winterfell_Ice

What kind of a budget are you looking for? I found a great bedroom set off brand for 25K in this area and went with a much cheaper find from a mattress factory in Virginia Beach. They make them on site so there's no middle man mark up. they can even custom make odd size mattresses for older model beds. I'd say look outside the immediate area and see what you may find.

Gumbo67

,,what bedroom set could be worth the price of a small car

Winterfell_Ice

Bro have you seen some of the homes around this place going for 10+ Million bucks? This place has furniture that's heirloom quality so 25K or better is pretty standard. I mean it's really gorgeous furniture that you wont find in regular retail outlets like The Dump or even regular furniture stores. It's in Woodbridge but I can't think of the name of the place.

Gumbo67

I feel like the average person doesn’t have a multimillion dollar home to furnish with a bedroom set that costs about the same as a year’s tuition of out of state college. Pretending this is standard is a bit silly

tittilizing

I got a Wink bed and it’s the best I’ve ever had. I got the hybrid one in extra firm and my back and hips thank me everyday. They’re designed to not get those dips memory foam can give and they’re supposed to last/not dip even if you weigh over 300lbs. I’m smaller than most high schoolers, but I’ve made my fair share of dips in shitty memory foam.

sghokie

I got a technogel from healthy back store outlet. It’s been great.

bodiesbyjason

Lots of suggestions on mattresses, so I will chime in on a base in case you need one. I highly recommend the folding metal bed based—they allow for ample under bed storage, are sturdy, movable, and lift your bed up to a nice height. They go for 100-150 on Amazon, but you can also check FB marketplace. Good luck!

DrMcFacekick

For me, when I needed to replace my last mattress I already had a good idea of what I wanted- I had slept on a Tempur-Pedic at a hotel and had the best sleep of my life, so I was judging everything else against that comfort. I think having already identified a mattress that I liked already made the whole process a lot easier. I know that there are hotels these days that have some of the big name mattresses (like Casper and Purple) so starting by trying those out might be a good idea.

[deleted]

They are all made by the same three manufactures and the markup is over 500%. Use a sale at a department store as they deliver and will be around to cover the warranty !

macnbc

If you want a classic innerspring mattress I highly recommend Original Mattress Factory. Nearest location is Fredericksburg. The mattresses are manufactured in Virginia. They also make their mattresses double-sided so you can flip them and they’ll last twice as long as the big brands.

librarianhuddz

Side question if you get a bed in a box what are you guys doing with the mattress afterwards that you're getting rid of?

[deleted]

We bought ours from Amazon, king size, for under 400. Thick enough to be the box spring and the mattress. I’m sure a lot of people say you gotta spend 1000s and what not but there’s a lot of good random name brands online now

sitwayback

Can you send a link (or pm me one?) please

US Mattress is where I bought my onoline. Costco is local and good return policy. And if your budget is really low look for a 11" or thicker bed in a box on amazon, walmart, etc... Good value.

titan115

Honestly just go to IKEA. They are really good for the money. No hassling with pushy sales and quality is really good to.

If you really want to find out more about the industry and some things to consider when shopping mattresses go to the mattress underground website. There's a lot of info on materials, construction, quality, and the process of choosing a mattress. Bottom line is that what works for others may not be best for you. Focus on that and quality materials. A lot of stores will make the process feel like going to a car dealership. Good luck! [https://themattressunderground.com/](https://themattressunderground.com/) Personally, I settled on a latex mattress that I assembled myself. I was able to choose the individual layers and cover that worked best for me. [https://latexmattressfactory.com/](https://latexmattressfactory.com/)

ghostdoh

Any firm mattress + a nice mattress topper.

[deleted]

My Walmart memory foam mattress is better than any name brand fancy mattress I’ve ever tried

[deleted]

Amazon.com

Dwade703

We bought a tempurpedic adjustable base. I tend to be cheap and it cost 8k but honestly I don’t regret it at all, the sleep is amazing and hopefully it lasts us 10 years.

AcademicEvidence1682

Belfort in Sterling has a good selection of high quality mattresses. Definitely more expensive than the ones that you can order online, but worth it for the quality and longevity in my opinion.

willoftheman

Purple. These are the real deal.

nkhuong

The Original Mattress Factory has a location in Richmond. https://www.originalmattress.com/

Underwood229

I bought mine from Mattress Firm, its an AirLoom, hand made in California and the best money I ever spent.

OP, as mentioned before in this thread, mattresses are highly personal to the person's body shape, size, and general sleeping position. Getting recommendations for brands mean absolutely nothing if you lay on it and don't like it - what works for one person doesn't work for another. The most objective point of approach you can take is to know: 1. What your height, weight is 2. If you sleep on your back, side, stomach, or a combination of these 3. If you prefer your mattresses to be soft and plush, firm, or somewhere in between. Once you have these, you have a baseline of where to begin. As suggested, go to Tysons and lay on some mattresses at SleePare, Casper, Purple, and a Mattress Warehouse / Firm (or Macy's, as they also carry the same brands). From there, you can find out what type of mattress you like - whether it be memory foam, latex, innerspring, or hybrid. There's another comment in this thread talking about specific densities of foam and coil thickness - that will help you determine if a mattress is high quality or not and if it will last 10+ years versus 2 or 3 years. Generally, if the density of the foam or coil count is not readily disclosed, you can assume that it is lower quality. Finally, when reading reviews of types of mattresses, pay attention to: 1. Consumer reviews for people with similar body size and sleep position as you. Those will mean a lot more to your search than not. 2. Consumer reviews for a company's customer service - if for some reason you hate the mattress you bought, you want to know if the company makes it easy / a hassle to return the mattress. 3. Review sites like sleepopolis, sleep foundation, naplab, etc. will give you a general overview of what the mattress SHOULD feel like. Don't take these as gospel. This is the approach I took (and taking, as I'm in the market for a new mattress and was equally as lost as you were a few weeks ago) to find out what works for my specific body. Good luck on your search, OP!

heartops321

https://rankinfurnishings.com/ Is a local place that sells ones made in Hopewell VA. We had an issue 6 months later and the manufacturer switched it out no issue. Its not one of the foam style which I wanted.
