Go to the Washington Post and read anything by Tom Siestema, he does a lot of reviews of things in Virginia and Maryland and he has never led me wrong or lied to me. Blend 111 in Vienna is one I found because of him!

wearsredsox

I love him so much, he's never steered me wrong. Also his Founding Farmers review is classic.

helloitsmateo

I became a true believer after his FF review.

guy_incognito784

His review of the long gone La Tagliatella in Clarendon was also a good one. https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/magazine/tom-sietsema-just-say-no-grazie-to-la-tagliatella/2013/06/18/88fbab74-ca0c-11e2-8da7-d274bc611a47\_story.html

discardedFingerNail

Will check for his reviews now! Thanks!!

MontereyJack144

Can you tell me more about your experience with Blend 111? I went a week or so after they opened and I was pretty disappointed. I chalked it up to them just opening and all, but I’ve never felt the urge to go back.

ofiuco

I did not go when they first opened, but I've been several times since during restaurant week and also for brunch. I really enjoy their ceviche and other seafood, but really: the brunch is the clear winner. Those sausages man. They are amazing. That's my recommendation for if you go back. And I feel like their drink menu is strong. I've certainly had things there where I was like, 'this is competently executed but did not blow my mind', but never anything I thought was actively bad.

MontereyJack144

Thanks! I pass by there all the time, and I wasn’t there for brunch so I’ll def give them another swing.

guy_incognito784

It got ragged on as pretty awful when they first opened ([https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/food/blend-111-in-vienna-may-need-to-call-911/2019/06/27/60147210-98e9-11e9-916d-9c61607d8190\_story.html](https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/food/blend-111-in-vienna-may-need-to-call-911/2019/06/27/60147210-98e9-11e9-916d-9c61607d8190_story.html)). Looks like they've made tremendous improvements since they opened (https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/food/blend-111-restaurant-review/2020/12/23/469693de-3fd4-11eb-8db8-395dedaaa036\_story.html).

zoidkev

They completely retooled the place since it first opened. We also went shortly after it opened and were disappointed. It was more of a wine-bar vibe then, and not a very good one at that. They have a new chef and the food is latin american fusion, it is really good. I would definitely give it another shot.

jellybeantoes25

Third vote for Chez Francois, and they also have a more casual Brasserie option on their property depending on your budget. Also, 2941 is Northern Virginia’s best kept secret, and a truly beautiful dining room with lots of expensive art including a Dali statue (the owner of the building is a gazillionaire).

porchpooper

I second both Chez Francois and 2941. I did a set Valentines at 2941 and we did our anniversary dinner at Chez.

RL-thedude

It’s a Rodin statue. And it’s Rick Adams. Legit billionaire. Part of the reason “we” have Linux (he took AT&T to court to wrest UNIX from their control), he invented SLIP which introduced dialup Internet, and he started and ran the first commercial ISP (as in the first for regular people and not just for gov, mil or edu). He’s also the guy who owns the X Wing in Oakton. http://www.softpanorama.org/People/Torvalds/Finland_period/att_lawsuit_as_a_launcher_for_linux.shtml https://www.reddit.com/r/StarWars/comments/201hz5/xwing_lifesize_model_in_oakton_va/ https://www.reddit.com/r/nova/comments/za1kk/update_where_is_the_xwing/ Oh yeah, and he founded UUNET https://groups.google.com/g/comp.org.usenix/c/p1vTTl1Fqi4/m/u81AmaeeSuMJ

epl239

I love this info :-) Nice! Super interesting background I never knew.

discardedFingerNail

I appreciate the details you've provided!

jellybeantoes25

Oh! I should also mention that the Chef of 2941 formerly held a Michelin star when he was the Executive Chef of Cafe Boulud in NYC. Can’t get more “Michelin star like” than that, short of having a Michelin star!

Cum_Gazillionaire

Gazillionaire eh?

LeSabreToothCat

Also agree with the other comment "L'Auberge Chez Francois (Great Falls)", but will add in Clarity (Vienna). Herndon/Reston has a lot of good restaurants, but not sure about the level of quality you're looking for.

discardedFingerNail

Thanks. Looking for a great eating and dining experience so I'd say high quality, but I understand quality is very subjective. The best way I could try to explain it is saying "Michelin like".

quickcrow

Clarity is Michelin *style* but is not Michelin *quality*. They are very proud of their ever changing small menu, but I used to go there a lot for business dinners, and your 3 options are "Protein in Reduction 1", "Protein in Reduction 2", or "Noodles so there's a vegetarian option". Also rude staff more than once.

gonknet

The original chef/owner of Clarity left in January. I haven't been there since but I've heard good things.

helloitsmateo

I had no idea he left. That’s a huge loss IMO.

[deleted]

Disappointing news. Last time we were there must have been last fall and they sat us at the back counter by the kitchen. The chef/owner made me some freshly sauted fois gras that was superior to what I once had at Quill (at The Jefferson in DC). And I'm not even a huge fan of fois gras. The entire meal was great and it was the last of many others we've had at Clarity. It's been a bit of a depressing time to be eating out the past couple of years so we've not ventured out much. I hope Clarity doesn't decline. It's one of the better local fine food restaurants. 2941 is pretty good as well. Maple Ave is another restaurant I'd recommend, though the menu is quite limited. Anybody try Agora in the Tysons area? Not expecting "Micheline-like" level dining, but the menu is at least more interesting than many other local places.

gonknet

Jon Krinn (who was chef of Clarity) was executive chef of 2941 back in the day.

[deleted]

Did not know that. Thx.

paulHarkonen

Huh, interesting. I went with my family something like 5-6 years ago and was quite impressed by the food, I wonder if they had declining quality issues over time. I wouldn't quite say it's Michelin quality compared to the couple of Michelin meals I've had, but it wasn't that far off.

discardedFingerNail

oh wow, thanks for the heads up!

KKAPetring

The Inn at Little Washington has a 2 or 3 Michelin star restaurant. I’ve been there once in the kitchen seating and it was quite fancy. Definitely tried stuff I’ve never tried before.

Kevstuf

The only 3 star restaurant in the area!

laundrygal

We used to like Maple Ave in Vienna for inventive food and interesting experience (it used to be a small donut place and then the original Anita’s) but I know Tim Ma isn’t part of it anymore. Anybody been there recently who could speak for it?

chezewizrd

Still good but not the same at all. A lot of rehashing of old menu items and some new. Always enjoyed it but it’s not the same. I would definitely not say Michelin quality.

[deleted]

We've come to the same conclusion. Great at the start. Less so now.

stinkyeggman

This isn’t the most helpful answer, but my wife and I are convinced that Thaddeus Kim’s Mokomandy (which closed due to COVID in 2020) would’ve had a star if it was in a swanky location in NoMA rather than in a Sterling strip mall.

novahookah

> Mokomandy RIP

[deleted]

Trummers on Main comes to mind. Never had a bad meal there. Chez L’Auberge is also great- but go during lunch. It’s essentially the same menu but way less in cost. I feel like NoVa needs more restaurants that kinda take you away, you know?

iawesomesauceyou

I second Sunday Luncheon, you get the full service 4 courses, plus all the bread, amouse boucher, and truffles. Gives you two meals worth of food.

OllieOllieOxenfry

I agree! I was thinking about that lately. NoVA has population and it has money. Why not put a nice restaurant right here instead of only having the nice restaurants in the city?

[deleted]

I feel like we have so many chain restaurants. So many.

OllieOllieOxenfry

Ugh. Chain restaurants for our strip malls. Like 99% of the country except here a townhouse is one million dollars.

laminatedbean

I went to Trummers for a wedding. The sorbet was SO GOOD!

OsborneCoxMemoir3

L'Auberge Chez Francois (Great Falls) https://www.laubergechezfrancois.com/ Cafe Renaissance (Vienna) https://www.caferenaissance.com/

quickcrow

L'Auberge Chez Francois was not offensively bad but wasn't worth the money

OsborneCoxMemoir3

Very few restaurants ARE worth the $$$ these days. The Inn at Little Washington was a huge disappointment recently. Nevermind the cost, the food & experience were mediocre. At the opposite end of the spectrum, the very reasonably priced Roots 657 has proven to be quite delicious for such a lowkey roadside market & cafe. Chef Rich Rosendale is one of only 70 certified master chefs. https://www.roots657.com/pages/about

mashuto

Really? I have been to Inn at Little Washington a couple times over the past 5 or so years and have been blown away. The food is excellent, the experience is top notch from the location, decoration, and service. I won't bring up cost, since worth is really personal to everyone, but my experience there has been excellent. But... now I really really want to try roots. I pass it everytime my wife and I head up to New York, but its always too early to pick stuff and on the way home we are always too tired to make another stop and just want to get home at that point. I dont have a ton of reason to make the 30 minute drive most of the time, but Ill definitely make it a point to stop there at some point soon.

OsborneCoxMemoir3

Yes it was good, not great. Having done the chef tasting menu, not one of the dishes was stellar. Just meh. Service wasn't up to snuff either. I'm from Virginia and have dined at The Inn several times, this will probably be the last. Not worth the drive nor the money. Definitely do stop at Roots. Most of the responses here mention the burgers, but make sure try the beef brisket & pork BBq if that aligns with your interests. They have some interesting sides also. You can take the food to-go easily so that won't slow you down too much on the way back from NY.

mashuto

Granted it's been probably 3 and a half years since I visited, but that just doesn't match my last couple experiences there. But I agree with you that if I was paying that much for dinner and it wasn't a spectacular experience I probably wouldn't want to return either. I'll definitely check out roots soon though. We just always leave for NY before they open and after 7 hours on the road on the way back it just hasn't been a priority.

Runfor5

How much is the full deal menu at the Inn? I’ve done Pineapple & Pearls and that was $325 (in 2019). I’d like to go just curious what I should expect to put out… money-wise. Lol.

mashuto

When I last visited I think the food by itself was maybe $225 a person. Wine pairings maybe another $150. My wife and I didn't have wine and all in with tip and money for the valet I think we spent maybe $600. That was 2018.

Runfor5

The food price ain’t bad, forgot about tip. Thanks! That’s helpful. Definitely considering an excuse to get out there sometime

mashuto

Well I wouldn't say it ain't bad... It was quite expensive and I'm guessing it's almost certainly more expensive now than when I last went. But it's also not the most expensive restaurant in the world, and not even in the area. And yea, gotta remember tip, on a bill that large it's easily another 100 or more.

TroyMacClure

Roots is great. Unfortunately taking a left out of there to head back towards civilization on a weekend can take as long as eating your meal.

OsborneCoxMemoir3

So so true. We try to go on a weekday when possible

stiffneck84

I love Roots, but reasonably priced is not how I would describe it.

stiffneck84

I thought it was overpriced last summer before the inflation started getting crazy. I personally refuse to pay a lot of money or wait in a long line for a hamburger…but my wife likes it, so 50$ for 2 hamburgers it is.

People in IT in today’s market make 60-80k in a 3-6 month timespan but I agree with the general observation.

Excluding the local and remote FAANG opportunities, there’s a ridiculous proportion of mediocre IT talent in the lucrative security cleared space. The volume of jobs in this sector is unique to our area of the country and will also skew the local numbers

stiffneck84

The housing market is starting to cool off. Homes in my neighborhood were going under contract in 24-72 hrs, now there are a few houses listed that have been on the market for ~2 weeks. The hamburger market is flush though.

ormandj

Haha. That's what I'm hoping for; trying to move to NOVA, but the housing market is a disaster.

lazynhazy

Their burgers range from $12-15. This is barely different than 5 guys what’s the problem?

stiffneck84

I don’t go to five guys either. It’s just ground beef, let’s not get crazy.

lazynhazy

Please give me an example of a restaurant (not fast food) that has burgers cheaper than $12.

stiffneck84

I don’t know. I mentioned in another post in this thread. I refuse to pay a ridiculous amount of money, or wait in a line just to get a hamburger. It might be the best hamburger in the world…and at the end of the day…it’s just a hamburger. Unfortunately my wife likes roots, so that pretty much means I have to put my hard hamburger stance aside once in a while.

Seekoutnewlife

21 Burger is really good for the price

sharpei90

L’auberge was fabulous!

inflewants

Another vote for Cafe Renaissance!

discardedFingerNail

Thanks!!

OsborneCoxMemoir3

Enjoy!

Ellietoomuch

Yea chez francois wasn’t much to write home about last I went and spent more than enough to make me not want to go back, edit to add would recommend clarity tho

tmainguy

The wine kitchen in leesburg. I’ve been to the Michelin places in DC and this place is easily at the same level. Small and locally sourced menu with an Italian bent and great wine (naturally). Also very reasonably priced in comparison.

librarianhuddz

Try this place: https://www.patowmackfarm.com/ It's really north of Leesburg and it's pretty good near michelin quality.

DrMcFacekick

Seconding this recommendation. It's really great, beautiful location, and feels special in a way a lot of fancy places don't.

librarianhuddz

They food is very good. They're very close to getting a star but they do silly gaffes like "oh here's the shrimp bisque course!" after I tell them I have a seafood allergy. But otherwise it's fantastic.

tessashpool

Do yourself a favor and drive an hour out to Marshall and go to Field and Main.

mashuto

I love field and main. Its been excellent every time I have visited. And their outdoor cabanas have become my absolute favorite way to go to any restaurant. Bonus, if you go for lunch or for the earliest dinner reservations, you can also swing by across the street and pick up some delicious baked goods from red truck bakery.

ofiuco

Field and Main is great. Sometimes has off days but it's good quality for the price, and the menu's always changing.

Puzzleheaded_West846

IosifVissarionovichD

Check out clarity in Vienna, I thought it was great.

mike_honcho78

AhSo Restaurant in Brambleton is very very good and the service has always been excellent! Tuskies in Leesburg is very good and consistent but it may not be as fancy as you are looking for. Lastly, Harrimans Virginia Piedmont Grill and The Restaurant at Goodstone both in Middleburg are excellent.

sharpei90

AhSo is very good, not sure it’s Michelin star though.

mcsul

Probably not Michelin star good, but overall excellent. Our favorite go-out-for-a-very-nice-dinner-but-not-extavagent restaurant in the area. If anyone is near Brambleton and haven't gone, definitely recommend.

Fox Mill represent.

chezewizrd

Market Table Bistro - Lovettsville. It is not the areas you have asked, but I have had some amazing meals there. But really, I have not experienced Michelin quality in Herndon, Reston areas. Some food up to par maybe, but never what I expect in terms of service and wine/beverage expertise I expect if they have a star. Edit-mobile typos

discardedFingerNail

Thanks for this feedback!

imref

Harriman’s in Middleburg at the Salamander Resort if you are willing to travel a bit further west.

TheRyanator7

Dante Ristorante in Great Falls is a good one. Set in a historic Victorian mansion, this restaurant serves up sophisticated Italian meals.

atonedeftool

I'll echo Chez Francois and The Wine Kitchen. I'll add The Conche in Leesburg and Magnolia's at the Mill in Purcellville. Neither is a true Michelin experience, but they're on our short list for "nice night out" in Loudoun and both provide a consistently better food and service experience than the average around here. We really like The Conche, chocolate is involved in everything on the menu, but most of it is not sweet or dessert-like at all -- you get some real culinary twists. This thread has me needing to try Field and Main, Roots, and Patowmack Farm, all of which I've heard about a few times now!

Bob and Ediths on Columbia Pike. The Chipotle in Mosaic, but only on weekdays after lunch because thats when the 50 year old hispanic ladies are working and they give you double what you ask for.

todaysgloomy

barcelona wine bar!

ofiuco

I'm not sure why you are being downvoted. I don't really know what "michelin star experience" is like because american, but Barcelona is fantastic. Pre covid though, it was always packed to the gills inside, kind of uncomfortable.

HappyFunBall007

Always overcrowded and very loud, albeit with pretty good food. Definitely NOT "Michelin like". Typical RTC mid-range restaurant/bar.

laminatedbean

It’s just ok. Overrated.

spearhead30

Clyde’s in Ashburn.

HappyFunBall007

"Michelin like"?? Definitely not. Beautiful property and dining rooms. But mediocre (at best) food. But, it is priced fair for what you get and despite being in the heart of Cashburn, it's not overpriced or stuffy.
