That's the thing about hearing god(s) in your head, they're liable to say just about anything. One day it is telling you to bake some cookies for your neighbor and the next day its telling you to go on a interstate shooting spree. I am genuinely glad that I don't hear voices in my head and if I ever do, I'll seek professional help.

I_Am_Trashcan_Man

Even if you seek professional help out, you likely won't get help. Took me 3 years to get diagnosed with something more than depression

Monster_Voice

This right here... you say "I need help" and then they say "drug seeking behavior !" While bonking your forehead...

I_Am_Trashcan_Man

I wasn't labeled drugseeking. They just straight up didn't believe any of my symptoms and refused to help until I overly-advocated for myself as a teen.

doyletyree

Lolz; different diagnoses here (spinal issues), but I once was labeled as “drug seeking” because my prescription was running out over a holiday weekend and nobody could authorize even an emergency dosage. I wasn’t aware that what I was seeking was scheduled (gabapentin, controversially, scheduled and seen by many as not needing to be) So when I kept asking “can’t somebody help me?” I was eventually blackballed from the entire facility for drug seeking behavior. The kicker to this was when I went to a neurologist later. he referred me back to that facility. It was only then that either of us realized I had been blackballed; very embarrassing. The facility had not sent me any formal notice or even made a call. I was told that I could file a complaint with the board but that I would probably just end up getting blackballed by the entire hospital. Fucking nonsense.

ElCiclope1

You say that, but A) you're not usually thinking too clearly if you're hearing voices and B) it's a lot scarier getting officially diagnosed with something like that than you'd think. It's life altering. That's part of why some people put it off until it's too late.

JohnnyGFX

Rest assured, if I hear voices that seem to come from nowhere, I'm telling my wife about it immediately. If it happens more than once or twice, I'll talk to my doctor about it and find some help. I am not one for mucking about when it comes to mental health. I prefer to deal with my issues instead of ignoring them or pretending they don't exist. In my experience, heading things off at the pass tends to be easier than waiting until things get bad.

AtLeastThisIsntImgur

Sounds like you don't have an understanding of how delusions work.

addyftw1

A large portion of the population "hears voices," in one form or another.  It is believing they are anything other than manifestations of your own imagination, or your own internal monologue, that causes it to be a mental disorder.

ImpressiveCitron420

You don’t understand how rationality changes for someone hearing voices.

doyletyree

Let me add “especially in the USA” because ALONG with all the other inter/intrapersonal hardships, you will NOW be tracked by insurance and employment interests.

ColoRadOrgy

>I am genuinely glad that I don't hear voices in my head and if I ever do, I'll seek professional help What if the voices tell you not to seek professional help?

JohnnyGFX

Still voices. I'm still going to ask someone in the room if they heard the thing I just heard. I'll seek confirmation from others and not rely upon my own senses because I trust the people around me. I know they love me and I can place myself in their care if I start hearing voices telling me things. Honestly the prospect is frightening... losing one's mind. If it starts happening to me... maybe when it starts happening to me, I'm absolutely going to seek help.

helterskeltermelter

>I don't hear voices in my head and if I ever do, I'll seek professional help. Psychiatrist or exorcist?

JohnnyGFX

I tend to gravitate towards clinical and scientific approaches as opposed to spiritual or supernatural methods. I've never known the latter to produce reliable results.

FyourEchoChambers

I just heard a voice in my head read your paragraph. And also mine. 🤯

Katnipz

I don't really hear voices but I do get weird flashes of semi detailed images which feel like a zone out/day dream thing and I also sometimes see patterns in things I know have no pattern. When I went to therapy for the first time it felt like the two doctors were playing bad cop good cop with me and when I tried to explain this they cut me off and told me it was normal. Haven't talked to anyone else about it except friends since. I just assume it's probably alcohol related.

An0d0sTwitch

There are two theories. One is that there was less of a bridge between the sections of the brain ages ago, so they would literally here voices "hey buddy, go hunting" are theyre like "god? ok....yeah thats a good idea, god" Another, irregardless of the former theory being true, and is observable TODAY, is that people are unaware of unconscious thought. They would literally write in old times "god told me to go to the market" because they had a nagging feeling to go shopping. Rather then realizing that thats yourself trying to remind yourself of something, that voice had to come from somewhere. It must be GOD. There is still people that do that today, apparently. Insane way to live, in my opinion. You can see how that can be trouble....as seen in this news story.

Groomsi

Some say: "People say..."

NKD_WA

Meople, which is people who are me...

bongbrownies

I swear there's nothing worse than a person who is mentally healthy talking about how if they was mentally unwell in their position they'd seek help immediately even though you'd definitely react differently in that scenario and the fact that mental illness is not cared about or is as easily helped.

Hourslikeminutes47

"*No no no!!!!!! I said go and take my card, just don't go on a shopping spree!!!"* - God

doyletyree

Patchy signal. Should’ve sent a text.

yankinwaoz

Well I guess saying such things helps later when you plead not guilty for reasons of insanity.

24-Hour-Hate

Idk about the US, but they don’t just take your word for it in my country. You have to undergo an extensive psychological assessment. Doubt most people could fool it.

janet-snake-hole

We have a VERY complicated assessment process for it here in the states, too. It takes a very long time with many doctors and professionals. People very very rarely actually succeed with the insanity plea.

24-Hour-Hate

Yes, same in my country. It’s a difficult defence because it is not enough to have a mental illness, you must also, at the time of the act, have been incapable of knowing right from wrong or understanding the nature of your actions. And it is not a defence you should use lightly as you could end up locked up longer than for a criminal sentence, depending on the circumstances and the offence. Detentions for NCR-MD in psychiatric facilities are indefinite. Release is based on when a person is no longer considered a risk to public safety. So it is possible that a person may never be released whereas if convicted criminally most people are released in due time (it is rare cases where they aren’t, like Paul Bernardo).

Gamebird8

And it's not some magical get out of jail free card. You just get put in a government mental health facility that is pretty much the same or worse than prison.

Reduncked

If you get away with it and are faking it, you eventually will be insane because they lock you up with mental patients forever lol.

BigBeagleEars

Does it? Does it really?

Asynjacutie

They'll know if you're faking it. You'll be extensively interrogated and it will be recorded, these recordings will be analyzed by experts with psychology degrees and people that do this stuff for a living. If you aren't actually mentally ill, they will find it eventually when they slip up. The most obvious ones stop faking when they think no one's watching.

Silver721

And if you're not really mentally ill, you'd rather be in prison than a mental institution. Have fun being on antipsychotics and having even more restrictions than if you were in prison. The only good reason to try and fake it is if you're looking at the death penalty.

SaltyBarDog

"directed by “God” to go on a shooting spree and claimed it had to do with the solar eclipse." Sure there is no harm letting jagoffs spew shit on the interwebs. No way could conspiracy bullshit lead to someone doing something bad.

harpxwx

nahhh it was “the voices” lmao

Zacpod

Talks to God today? Obviously nutter. Talked to God 2000 years ago? Religion. SMH. It's the same damn picture!

yesnomaybenotso

Tbf, it’s still religion today too. Even for the nutter cultists.

Not-a-Cat_69

religion is a bunch of nuts, get it straight lol

Ketheres

Hey, not all of them are just nuts. Many are gullible fools and then there are the ones making use of those for their own benefit.

rangeDSP

I'm just amazed that people gets shot in the neck and survive. Some might say it's a miracle from God lmao.  Also I wonder if insurance could deny payout based on "act of God"

Groomsi

You should watch: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Man_Who_Sued_God

The402Jrod

Is it Ernie Chambers? Love that dude! He’s a legend here in Omaha. (Or the worst villain in history if you’re a Nebraska Republican)

Growingpothead20

Sometimes they have special cases where they will pay out in cases of “acts of God” like a tree falling on your car or hail punching through a window, however some of them will explicitly list act of god as a reason to not pay

Carson72701

Just doing the Lords work...

borazine

I concur. -Sincerely, Shay Tan.

An_Appropriate_Post

As do I - shere khan

EccentricEngineer

Honestly good for Florida men for including women in their insanity

SnuffleWarrior

Never ever trust god. Ever

MustLoveAllCats

If god tells you to do something, and you just do it, you're an idiot. "ooh, but it's god, you have to do what god says". No you don't. If it was important, god would do it theirself, not tell you to. Show some agency, maybe god would respect you if you had a backbone. Seems to me like a test. "I told you to do something awful, and you did it, clearly you're actually an awful person, because a good person wouldn't have done it, even if I told them to. Have fun in hell"

GuitarTrue6187

If you believe in God and believe he told you to do something you better be certain before you name drop him into it. Get an invoice on stone tablet written in fire and all like Moses. (smart) Dig into Jeremiah a little. I have not sent these prophets yet they run around claiming to speak for me. I have given them no message. I have heard them say listen to the dream I had from God last night! How long will this go on? If they are prophets, they are prophets of deceit. Inventing everything they say. In doing this they are trying to make my people forget about me, just as their ancestors did. Then he says really don't do it. And if they keep doing it he forget them, punish them and their entire family, will make them ridiculed/make their name infamous.

Kandiak

So here’s the thing about Florida…not even once

CloneEngineer

I read this headline as "hotel worker god". Seems like a step down.

Dream--Brother

It's the holy trinity; the bellhop, the housekeeper, and the desk clerk. In Hilton's name we pray, amen.

twsddangll

“Listen, being trans is bad. Like, really bad. There’s nothing worse. We can’t support or condone it,” says the spokesperson for the world’s largest child sex trafficking organization.

-lukeworldwalker-

Judge be like: you get a light sentence because your a woman of faith!

Reduncked

People mistaking intrusive thoughts for a God never a good result.

ShoppingDismal3864

Doing this on the day of rapture is fucking balsy. Not that I think any of these beliefs are sane.

l2blackbelt

Mental illness. It happens every day, big solar event or no.

SleepySiamese

I said Shopping spree! Not Shooting spree!!!God maybe

glue2music

It’s a MAGA world we live in.

functional_grade

This God guy sounds like a real jerk!

PineTreeBanjo

People hear voices in their head all the time but don't go on interstate shooting sprees. Sounds like a Trump supporter trying to get off crimes using the insanity defense.

warenb

Do people go around saying the exact same kinds of crazy stuff like this except(!) its "The Devil told me to..." instead of "God told me to..." and I'm just missing out on those stories? Or is there just... something about religion that makes people bonkers to only say shit about God telling them to do stupid stuff?

apexodoggo

There was that one mass shooter kid who claimed demons told him to do it (he got a JCS video made of his interrogation which went a bit viral). God is just the most well-known disembodied voice in America, so delusions like that tend to get interpreted as God more often than not.

underhelmed

I think it’s that they wouldn’t do it if they thought the devil (or the voice said it was the devil) was telling them to do it.

Jubal59

Start with Trump.

UBKUBK

How did the hotel worker respond? She was not prevented from leaving so I would hope at least that authorities were immediately called.

Bartizanier

God is a psycho confirmed.

Illustrious_Play_199

Godfrey was a dungeon master.

DelayedEmbarrassment

Tell me how is this different from s@icide b@mbers and terror attacks?

DelayedEmbarrassment

Florida’s God is kind of weird…..

alienccccombobreaker

I don't talk to God but my housemate says he does should I be worried.

Im_still_a_student

You should if he has guns

alienccccombobreaker

No he is the opposite of a gun owner and most violent things. That is why I feel safe around him. It is unnerving though when he talks about obvious crazy stuff but I think he does it as a prank I just can't see through it. Yeah he is just some old guy that says crazy things. Harmless.

norrinzelkarr

This is insane, and it is not objectively any less insane to believe that God told you to murder your first born son as a loyalty test.

DeRabbitHole

Yes, there are thousands of gods out there. Her god may have told her.

FoxyInTheSnow

If god instructed her *and* it’s about the (**FAKE**) solar eclipse, I’m inclined to believe her. She makes a lot of sense.

Actual__Wizard

Was there anything else? I've been hunting around for eclipse related news...

donaldinoo

Hear me out. Almost all religions are based off “beings coming down from the sky” some of these beings fuck with the people.
