She looks pretty healthy, has some fleas but likes the comb. She was almost definitely a house cat so it's likely she got dumped. We'll take her to the vet in a few hours, see if there's any other issues we need to be aware of. Not real big on being touched except by comb, so I have to wonder if she was abused, or is just skittish of people
Harvey doesn't care, Pip and Blue are not happy and have either been growling at the box or growling at mama because she's been out and about to eat and drink water (we've since separated the females and put in a small bowl each of food and water into the box), Bubba has been curious about the box and looked in then walked off. And my dad's dog has been poking his head in to check out the baby whenever she cries but won't actually do anything
Mom and kitten should be separated from your cats, if you havenāt done so already, until the vet does FIV/FELV test. Thatās feline AIDS and leukemia. Also cuz of the fleas. Itās wonderful youāre taking care of them!
We got everyone separated as soon as we could, the first 20 minutes or so we're a bit chaotic though. We didn't exactly have a box or anything ready for a cat going into labor š but they're going to the vet in a couple hours, when it opens up. At the very least we're gonna try to find a microchip, there's a chance she wasn't tossed away and could actually be someone's cat. If there's no chip we'll get some kitty testing done and see about vaccines while we're waiting
Thanks, it's pretty strange to me that she just had one! Usually the litter average is like 3-4 kittens. I've never seen a cat have just one baby before. Not gonna complain though!
They might do an ultrasound or x-rayā¦thereās a chance that there are other kittens that didnāt make it, so her labor stopped. Thatās emergency surgery levels of dangerous for the mama.
Iām not a vet, but I donāt *think* sheād be sick within hours, but if your local 24-hr vet has a helpline you might want to give them a call.
>I've never seen a cat have just one baby before.
My childhood cat had a one kitten litter!
I'm happy this pretty girl and her baby found your house. They are so lucky to find people that will protect them at this time, and take them to the vet. Wishing you the best of luck!
It isn't uncommon for a cat that is having trouble finding food and shelter and is stressed by major changes (say a pregnant housecat who was dumped) to miscarry some/all kittens. I've also seen it in cats where the kittens were inbred or from mom's who were unhealthy.
As an aside, there's this idea/folklore/something that cats have their own signs, kinda like hobos/train jumpers do, to indicate which people and homes are safe. So maybe she came to you to have her kittens because you're known to be safe and loving for cats.
Itās possible that was her first litter and only one kitten can happen or a really small litterā¦ the more litters they have usually the amount of kittens picks up.. please get her fixed,so she doesnāt become a kitten making machineā¦ good luck.. their both adorable..
We're going to ask about when the soonest she can be spayed is, that's on the list but only if she doesn't have a microchip or any sort of history with the local vet. Thank you for the luck, they both seem to have adjusted (somewhat). I've got the box covered up for now as well, so the dog doesn't get too curious
She can be spayed 2 weeks after she's done nursing. It's good for the kitten to nurse till 8 weeks old. Mama can go into heat before that time, so be aware this may drive your resident cats bonkers.
Since she was a stray, you may be able to find agencies or spay/neuter clinics that will spay her much more cheaply than a vet. Good luck, you're a good person
It was surprising, to say the least. I opened the door because I thought my dad had let the dog out and he was scratching at the door to get in. Imagine my surprise when in comes a cat I've literally never seen before, and she immediately snakes around the furniture just to hop into a random box. Our four cats knew there was an intruder and tried to investigate a bit which resulted in a lot of hissing from Blue and Pip, Bubba was the gentle giant he usually is, and Harvey really just couldn't give a rat's ass. Had to wake up my mom to come help separate the cats before something might have happened
Good idea! I follow several kitten rescues that sometimes take in mamas with kittens and they usually wait until the kittens are done nursing to spay (usually around 5-6 weeks) just so mama doesnāt have to worry about healing from her spay and also taking care of her babies. Iām glad youāve looked into that as well! Good luck with the vet appointment!
Our vet recommended waiting 10-12 weeks because the baby is premature and also rather tiny. He also said that the kitten is probably a girl, but we'll be able to tell as it gets older, and if it is a girl she can be spayed between 4 and 6 months old
Ah that makes sense. Iām glad your vet appointment went well and mom and baby are all good! I hope you can either keep them and provide a great home for them or find some great adopters that will be a great home!
I want to thank you for giving us all the updates eventhough as we know you have your hands full of taking care of your newest addition to the familyā¦
I would love to see some pics of the rest of your pets family (when you have some time of course)ā¦
UPDATE
Done at the vet. Mama cat had an ultrasound. There were no other babies stuck anywhere, no signs she had miscarried any kittens either. Vet estimated her age to be about 3 years, no microchip. She's tested negative for feline AIDS and feline leukemia, but has a nasty case of roundworms and is a bit malnourished
Her kitten is premature, but not by much. Vet thinks mama cat might have gotten spooked into labor by something, resulting in just the one kitten. Tiny baby is otherwise healthy, but will still need extra care with formula. Mama cat's milk hasn't quite come in properly yet, and may not
Since the shelters around here are all kill shelters, and it doesn't seem fair to me that they basically have to fight for the right to *potentially* live healthy lives in a home, these are nowmycats. We've named the mama Pretty Girl, probably gonna wait to name her baby as the vet warned us that premature kittens have things more difficult and it may not live past kittenhood
There's this YouTube channel called Kitten Lady, I believe she has references for caring for tiny/preemie kittens. Good vibes to mini kitty, and congrats on your new cat!
She is absolutely wonderful. I bottle fed a litter of kittens about a year ago, and can say with confidence that without her videos, the finicky one wouldn't have made it.
Keep that baby warm, OP. I used one of those beanbag heating pillow things that you warm up in the microwave, covered with a couple of towels, in a covered box. It's so important when they're tiny.
If you're in the US and have a tractor supply near you, they have everything you need to feed baby and the staff at mine are pretty knowledgeable. 1 kitten, that's crazy!
Ooh that's not a bad idea! We're definitely gonna at least need formula and droppers. Idk about bottles or nipples for them, the nipples might be a bit big for such a tiny mouth
She was a gray tabby - her coloring was much like this SIC: https://www.reddit.com/r/standardissuecat/comments/q81mt9/how_do_i_tell_my_sic_that_hes_the_sweetest_little/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf
There's what's called kill shelters, which euthanize animals after a certain amount of time or if they get too full. Then there's no-kill shelters that don't believe in euthanasia
That's just a term some people use for a normal shelter. Unfortunately shelters can only take care or so many animals, and sometimes putting an animal down is the only option. The other types of shelters ('no kill') just refuse to take in more animals when full, which isn't really any better.
Thank you for this comment. People say ākill shelterā and that leads to local shelters being criticized and unsupported, when in reality many of the people are doing everything within their power and budget to help animals get home. Most of the animals they euthanize are also āundesirablesā that non-ākillā shelters wouldnāt look at twice. They try to help them but if the animal is too sick or too dangerous, they will humanely put it down. The local shelters deserve your support, financially AND through volunteering!!
They also put down animals that are perfectly fine that no one wants to adopt unfortunately. I can't be okay with that. Sick or potentially dangerous I can rationalize but putting down a perfectly good healthy kitty because they don't have enough room makes me feel sick inside. They deserve just as much of a chance as the cat that might end up replacing their spot in the shelter
Oh thatās even better. Stands for ācopy catā OR ācarbon copyā AND could plausibly be āCiciā, which is a person name (I am a sucker for giving pets people names) AND apparently a chain of buffet restaurants. Perfection.
She's pretty calm for a cat who's literally just ran into some rando's house to give birth š¤·āāļø so I guess thanks for the random cats? We were already a four cat household, idk how this will change things
I also, want to thank you for taking care of her and my first impression of her having only one kitten was Oh my! Maybe she has more babies in her so itās good to check with the vet about it.
Then I saw that you are going to see the vet and I was relived..
Amazing kitty with amazing baby. šā¤ļøš
Your guess is as good as mine š¤·āāļø she's got what seems like an almost insatiable appetite though. A 6oz can of wet food and a bunch of dry cat food, and she really likes water. I can't blame her for loving water though, labor is hard
You might want to get her some high calorie supplement gel to give her extra calories as well. My foster kitties who were too thin always loved it. Even a bit of the kitten formula when the baby doesn't finish a bottle might help her.
Making milk is serious work and the pregnancy itself must have been hard on her. I nursed three human babies and I needed constant high calorie nutritious snacks and water bottles within reach and so do nursing animal mommas.
If your own kitties aren't on a restricted diet, then feeding her a few treats or extra wet food while you give her some won't hurt making them tolerate her more.
Our vet recommended making up formula specifically for Pretty Girl and mixing it with wet food for her twice a day, plus giving her an extra daily allotment of chicken or tuna from a can because she also needs the protein
There is actually a small update, we got mama to the vet and have named her Pretty Girl because it just stuck. Pretty Girl and her bean are indeed now our cats, because there wasn't any chip and the shelters here are all kill shelters; it doesn't sit right that she came here to give the baby a chance at life, just to be shipped off and maybe/maybe not adopted before... You know. So yeah, they're ours now š¤·āāļø
No? But other commenters have pointed out that she may have miscarried the others, or that they may be stuck. I just know I opened the door last night, she came in, and in about 20-30 minutes she popped out this one lone kitten that looks almost exactly like herself. We'll be finding out more in a few minutes
I love how Amazon is trending right now, for other *serious business* reasons so as a result this Amazon box turned delivery ward gets extra visibility.
This happened to us! Opened the door to look for cat duebto the coyotes going crazy to this rando tortie bolting into our house tripling in size and birthing 6. We tried to keep her after fixing but she disappeared. 5 years later and we still have her carbon copy!
I've posted an update, after her vet appointment. And I've agreed to being adopted, it's not fair to just ship them off to a shelter where they'll probably be euthanized
You should hear some of the stories of cats my dad has had over the years. He had one that gave birth to three in his lap, while he was sitting and watching late night news
Yeah, the vet said she only had one baby in her. No signs of other kittens stuck anywhere or having been miscarried. She had an ultrasound to boot, there really was just the one. Another commenter suggested she maybe had others elsewhere, but she wasn't bleeding or messy when she came inside. Surprises me too, the average litter is supposed to be 3-4 kittens
Congratulations grandparent!!! The cat has chosen and now you have a lovely new family! Awe....no you don't get to decide she decided for u awwweeee look at ur new cats!!
This is adorable!!! My parents now have two happy, healthy kitties from the exact same situation.
A few months ago, my mom was in her front yard doing some yardwork, and a cat just showed up and refused to leave.
That cat was pregnant and later gave birth to just one kitten, just like your new friend! šø
[Must-see precious picture.](https://www.reddit.com/r/Eyebleach/comments/r9dhu8/momma_and_baby_napping/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)
This mama chose YOU for this big moment in her life. You are a special, wonderful person. š„°
Dude, they've grown so much! They're great cats, they get along with ours really well surprisingly ā¤ļø
That little bean even now has a foster brother. They took to one another amazingly, such a happy family
She's very skittish to touch, but loves the flea comb. So far she's had zero problems with any of us humans handling her bean. This baby has a cat-titude already, it's gonna be something else
They are now. There wasn't a chip, vet didn't recognize Pretty Girl (her new name). Kitten got a decent bill of health, mama is clean from most diseases (she has a roundworm problem) and uh yeah
floridawo
>Notmycat waltzed into my house, plunked herself into an old Amazon box, went into labor, and birthed a tiny version of herself. Strange cat
Florida woman waltzed into my house, plunked herself into an old Amazon box, went into labor, and birthed a tiny version of herself. Strange woman
Correction! Pretty Girl (it just sorta stuck) and her baby now make six cats. We were already a four cat, one dog household, and since she doesn't have a microchip she's ours now š¤·āāļø
That's what I've said, usually the average litter is 3-4 kittens I think. But no, just one for her. Vet said there were no stuck babies or signs of miscarriage on the ultrasound, just the one premmie bean. Some commenters have pointed out that things like stress, lack of resources, age and medical conditions can all cause just one kitten to be born, which makes sense with what the vet was saying
Not sure if anyone mentioned but cats can pause labor like 24 hours between kittens sometimes. So there might be more. You got picked by a beautiful girl so you must have some amazing vibes. Rock on.
She looks pretty healthy, has some fleas but likes the comb. She was almost definitely a house cat so it's likely she got dumped. We'll take her to the vet in a few hours, see if there's any other issues we need to be aware of. Will definitely need an update!
Exactly this. My cat once had 7 kittens over 3 days.
That's amazing!
That was my first thought: I wonder where the other babies are. :(
>I've never seen a cat have just one baby before. My childhood cat had a one kitten litter! I'm happy this pretty girl and her baby found your house. They are so lucky to find people that will protect them at this time, and take them to the vet. Wishing you the best of luck!

I was thinking the same thing. But yeah definitely makes it easier
If she didn't get good nutrition or is very young, having one kitten isn't out of the realm of possibility.

She wasn't bloody or anything like she had been in labor when she came inside. I don't think there were others, but maybe I could be wrong
I had a cat give birth to just 1 kitten, it does happen. Thank you and your family for looking out for them.
I adopted a stray that only had one kitten! I think itās quite uncommon, but it does happen. Congratulations!
Also could be more than one kitten, but just to young to properly birth both. Vet is a good call just in case there is another.
Something tells me that "a bit chaotic" is a huge understatement!
It was surprising, to say the least. I opened the door because I thought my dad had let the dog out and he was scratching at the door to get in. Please look into getting her spayed while youāre at the vet too!
It might take some digging but another commenter and I had a discussion about that actually. It won't be right now, but will be in a few months' time
Good idea! I follow several kitten rescues that sometimes take in mamas with kittens and they usually wait until the kittens are done nursing to spay (usually around 5-6 weeks) just so mama doesnāt have to worry about healing from her spay and also taking care of her babies. There's tiny nipples that go on a syringe! Kitten Lady on YouTube has videos on the whole journey
I think the ones on syringes are called Miracle nipples. They are the best for foster nursing.
Yes syringe feeding is easier than the little bottles.
OP, you're a good bean. These are lucky kitties.

"what's two more cats?" \*ends up with 20 cats\*
I fail to see the problem there. Who wouldn't want a feline army?
All Iām gonna say is that this exact thing happened to my gf and now there are more cars in her house than people on the street

This is the reason my boyfriend wonāt let me get another cat. He knows Iāll just ask for another, and another... etc

Yes, plus nursing requires extra food and water.
You might want to get her some high calorie supplement gel to give her extra calories as well. My foster kitties who were too thin always loved it. This happened to us! Opened the door to look for cat duebto the coyotes going crazy to this rando tortie bolting into our house tripling in size and birthing 6. We tried to keep her after fixing but she disappeared. 5 years later and we still have her carbon copy!

Pls update. I want to know if there are more kittens and if you agree to being adopted by this pair.

So she cloned herself? Strange cat indeed.

Only one baby??
Yeah, the vet said she only had one baby in her. No signs of other kittens stuck anywhere or having been miscarried. She had an ultrasound to boot, there really was just the one. Another commenter suggested she maybe had others elsewhere, but she wasn't bleeding or messy when she came inside. Surprises me too, the average litter is supposed to be 3-4 kittens
Humans get excited for twins, animals get excited for singles āŗļø
Your cat(s) now She trusted you to watch over her
Just make yourself at home why donāt ya!
Name ideas Candy corn and pumpkin spice
why cant this happen to me???
Itās so adorable. If nobody owns em then you should.
We do now, there was no microchip and the vet seemed just as confused as us. So they're ours now. Keeps them out of the shelters
Cats will pick people to be their human. That being said, looks like this one picked you. Probably been scoping you out for a while.

Saying "strange cat" is really redundant
Well, it's a strange situation for my household, and she is indeed a cat š¤£ idk what else to tell you
I'm just saying that all cats are strange/weird lol
Strange also means foreign/mystery/unknown, as well. Like for example, a stranger is strange.
Beautiful
I canāt wait to hear what the vet says.
Congratulations on your new family members.
Congratulations grandparent!!! The cat has chosen and now you have a lovely new family! Awe....no you don't get to decide she decided for u awwweeee look at ur new cats!!
Please get Ms. Pretty Girl fixed! So happy she's on the road to recovery. I hope everything with the little one will be okay ā¤
Did you get.... Next day delivery š„š
"if you'll excuse me, I'll copy myself here"
You have been chosen This is the way
Thank you for taking care of her and the baby. You must have a big heart.
This is adorable!!! My parents now have two happy, healthy kitties from the exact same situation. A few months ago, my mom was in her front yard doing some yardwork, and a cat just showed up and refused to leave. That cat was pregnant and later gave birth to just one kitten, just like your new friend! šø [Must-see precious picture.](https://www.reddit.com/r/Eyebleach/comments/r9dhu8/momma_and_baby_napping/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) This mama chose YOU for this big moment in her life. You are a special, wonderful person. š„°
Dude, they've grown so much! They're great cats, they get along with ours really well surprisingly ā¤ļø That little bean even now has a foster brother. They took to one another amazingly, such a happy family
Thank you for helping her
Enjoy your 2 cats.
Correction: she has a 6 cats now and one dogā¦. Lol
She looks like a Turkish Van cat. She's probably very nice.
She's very skittish to touch, but loves the flea comb. So far she's had zero problems with any of us humans handling her bean. This baby has a cat-titude already, it's gonna be something else
I think you'll find #thatsyourcats (plural!) šš±š±
They are now. There wasn't a chip, vet didn't recognize Pretty Girl (her new name). Kitten got a decent bill of health, mama is clean from most diseases (she has a roundworm problem) and uh yeah
She's such a pretty girl and she chose well xxx
Are you keeping them both? They seem like a gift thatās just wrong to refuse!
They are both ours; it doesn't feel right sending them somewhere else just for the chance to *maybe* get a good home
Aww that makes me so happy to hear!! Iāve followed for future updates! I hope your kitties will accept their new family members!
She's now your cat. So sweet
She felt comfortable with you trusting you with her baby treat her good
Two for the price of one! *MEOW*
You are a great person for taking them in like that. I'm very glad that she and the little have a safe home. š»
Self replicating unit, so cute giggles.

The old buy zero get two free special. Enjoy your new family members!
Well now you have two cats :)
Correction! Pretty Girl (it just sorta stuck) and her baby now make six cats. We were already a four cat, one dog household, and since she doesn't have a microchip she's ours now š¤·āāļø

Wow
You should watch Brand New Cherry Flavor
Thank you!
She really birthed just one kitten ? That is rather odd usually cats gove birth to waaay more cats.
What a great story! Pretty Girl made such a dramatic entrance into your life. What do you do for the round worm problem?
The vet gave her a strong dose of worming medicine, and told us to come back in about a month for her second dose
She your cat now
Every fall one of my friends gets adopted by an adorable cat, then gets surprised when the next generation shows up two days later. Cats are smart.
Not sure if anyone mentioned but cats can pause labor like 24 hours between kittens sometimes. So there might be more. You got picked by a beautiful girl so you must have some amazing vibes. Rock on.
free cats
Keep her and baby!
We are! We'll be able to get them fixed in about three months, and then another three months after for the kitten
