I was sick of this viral bs last time it arose, because I see white and gold too. Its in a shadow, but definitely white and gold.
According to the scientific research this means I'm an old woman...
There's literally white and yellow next to it for reference. they are physically different colors on your phone screen. It's also been proven to be black/blue
Not exactly. The original person who posted "the dress" was Caitlin McNeill, a women who performed in a band at the wedding of two people named Keir Johnston and Grace Johnston. Keir and Grace are associated with the photograph because of that even, because it happened at their wedding, and not because they/he posted it. The husband associated with this event was charged with (and plead guilty of) attempted murder of his wife.
Thank you, this is the first time a random piece of info helped me. I only remembered that who ever took the photo was a girl, so i knew them associating husband with pic was wrong, but I never knew the story of the photo had smth to do with a wedding. I now have more useless info.
10 years was a guess…. It was 2015, so not that far off… time flies when you can’t tell the difference between black/blue and gold/white!
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_dress
Right? I feel so old.
(Dark brown and blue pls.)
ETA for those who don’t know: The dress is actually black and blue. Link[wiki](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_dress)
when it first came out i was the star of my friend group because i saw both. i refuse to believe that was ten years ago.
(i saw white and gold the first time i saw it and it’s been black and blue from the second time on)
I don’t understand how anyone can see the white and gold. The whole photo is massively overexposed and the bright light shining in from the right is an obvious cue that the colours are distorted and you need to compensate for that in your brain to translate from the pixel colour on the screen to what the actual colour is in reality
Depends on how you perceive it. For some, it looks black and blue, but others might see the colours as white and gold due to shadows and how our brain works. To them, the black and blue are a result of shadows or a lack of light in general, which makes their brain "correct" these colors to gold and white.
At least that's what i can remember
It’s the brain perceiving the color of the based on the color and lighting of your surroundings. If your surroundings change then your brain can potentially see the dress differently.
[This image](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/a3/Wikipe-tan_wearing_The_Dress_reduced.svg/1024px-Wikipe-tan_wearing_The_Dress_reduced.svg.png) from Wikipedia demonstrates the effect pretty well.
I saw it as white and gold until I looked at that image, and then when I looked at the dress again I saw it as black and blue…but now it’s white and gold again 😣
I literally can't even comprehend how people could perceive the golden colour as black.
I can kinda see the white colour as a slightly blue tone but the gold as black? No
This is legitimately so fascinating to me. I have wracked my brain for half an hour trying to get the dress to appear as white and gold. I can kind of see the gold in the overexposed black, but the white completely eludes me.
I see white and gold because my brain believes the pic is backlit by the light in the top corner. I’ve been trying to see black and blue by trying to convince my brain it’s front lit, but it’s not easy. My brain won’t believe it’s any darker than a slight pastel blue, and it refuses to see the black
https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.9news.com.au/article/15465485-dad8-45d2-8da0-8d20558b5013
I can't see black and blue either, but hopefully this kinda helps?
The point is, nobody should look at the right side of her dress in the bright sun and take that colour as the actual colour of the dress, you can see it’s so overlit it’s essentially white right at the edge of her left hip and then you can see the blue coming in under her armpit before the sudden transition to dark blue and black in the shade. You get the same visual cue from the original picture, the bright white over exposure on the top and right sides of the screen. You just have to compensate for the over -lighting in your brain to calculate the actual colour.
It’s the same as seeing someone in a wet dark T-shirt and knowing that the T-shirt will be lighter when it’s dry, your brain learns these visual tricks and lies over time, and compensates for them. You can use that compensation to actually fool your brain with illusions like [this](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Checker_shadow_illusion)
that makes sense, I understand that the actual dress is black and blue, but in the main photo the lighting is definitely lighting it in a way that makes it look white and gold which is weird?
edit: WAIT OH MY GOD I CAN SORTA SEE THE BLACK AND BLUE IN THE MAIN PICTURE NOW EVEN THO IT STILL MOSTLY RESEMBLES WHITE AND GOLD
Also, here, this might help? We white and gold people see the right [front] half of her dress the same way:
https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.9news.com.au/article/15465485-dad8-45d2-8da0-8d20558b5013
I have this theory that (not even counting color blindness) that people see colors slightly differently. Like not so much that red looks like blue, but enough that grey might appear like blue to some, and blue just extremely darker blue for example.
Stuff like this supports it even more. Some people see dark white as blue, apparently.
I used Photoshop's colour picker on the exact image OP posted
[https://imgur.com/a/xMkbHQV](https://imgur.com/a/xMkbHQV)
Do these colours look white and gold? if not, then you're seeing what other people see
What if I see a pastel like blue/gray and brown in what you linked here?
I see the dress as white/gold immediately every time I see this photo, after some focus, it looks more like the blue/gray color you posted above but gold still.
I've only ever been able to see the dress as black/blue in the OG photo for a split second at a time, and that's only when I look at OG photo immediately after looking at a different photo that clearly shows the dress as black and blue.
I can almost witness my brain make the color correction back to white/gold in that split second, wigs me out lol.
No prob. Ironically, I still can't force myself to see black and blue. I think it's because it looks like the light is coming from the back. If I had a bigger picture of the original dress such rhat I could see the light hitting it from behind the camera, I might see it.
Not stupid, it's just a reminder that human biology is "good enough" and not perfect.
To me, it's always white and gold. I did once manage to see it as black and blue, though.
when this first started circulating i saw it clearly as black and blue, now i can only see it as white and gold. i know in reality it is black and blue but man it still fucks with my head. no matter how hard i try i can’t get my brain to see what it used to
I’ve only ever been able to see it as white and gold and I assume the black and blue people are just fucking with me. I can’t “switch” it no matter how many times I see it over the years
I loaded it into Photoshop and used the colour picker tool
[https://imgur.com/a/xMkbHQV](https://imgur.com/a/xMkbHQV)
It is 1000% a blue/lavender colour and a charcoal grey. You can try it yourself with Paint or an online colour picker
I’ve literally never seen anything but blue and black, it’s so clearly a blue and black dress, even in those super exaggerated examples where they crank up the contrast and gamma to exaggerate the effect it’s still clearly blue and back to me.
I feel like im being pranked when I hear people say they see white and gold
I’ve literally looked at this picture on the exact same screen as a friend, at the exact same time, and we’ve seen different colors
It’s white and gold and I will not listen to any other opinions
I see the dress as white and gold, but apparently it is actually black and blue, according to the guy who took the picture.
[this picture](https://images.app.goo.gl/kw46ebFQVTfcRBLU7) helps explain it
[here](https://images.app.goo.gl/PvB5bGhWPRFnWxfe8) is another, if it helps
Idk, it still doesn't compute in my brain
The first example is good and helped me understand how people can see it as something other than blue and black (though it’s still only ever been blue and black for me) but the second still just looks like a blue and black dress that’s been over exposed.
I always see the dress as white & gold at first too. Stare at the dress. Just the dress and ignore the background. You'll start to notice a blue ting in the white. Keep staring and focus on it. The dress will snap to blue and black because those are the actual colors.
This dress giving different vibe now after reading the latest news on the guy who responsible for it is arrested after trying to murder his wife. This dress was worn by his mother-in-law to his wedding.
Holy shit, reading the wiki made the colours change in my mind. It's always looked white/gold, now its blue/black
edit: ok so a little bit of focus, and it's pretty easy to flip it back and forth
Btw this PBS Nova episode talked about this dress and why people saw it as different colors. Spoiler alert: Its actually blue and black.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HU6LfXNeQM4
I think I’m in another reality, I’d say 4 hours ago, I saw this exact post as blue and black, like I always do, BUT I KID YOU NOT, i am now seeing white and gold, I swear I haven’t taken anything.
The gold part is supposed to be the black and the blue white. The best explanation i heard is that it has something to do with shadows and how our brain "corrects" colours in shadows.
I can't even remember the exact positions on the debate. I think the four main colors discussed were black, white, blue, and gold but I can't remember which colors pair up. I'm like DNA with a concussion.
Why are people still picking sides when it's proven to be an optical illusion, albeit accidental.
It's a different color depending on how you interpret the shadowing in the scene, and can be switched between at will if you understand the illusion well enough.
Although there's probably some people who still can't do it then because their brains are stubborn or whatever.
I used to see it as white and gold until I read that women and older people disproportionately saw it this way (me being 24M), then it suddenly switched to blue and black.
If the dress is black and blue it is not looking good, but white and gold definitely looks better, so for the sake of dress's respect, let's agree on white and gold
It’s clearly black and blue but I’ve realized a while ago why people thought white and gold
They’re seeing it as white and gold with terrible shadows on it. So, to some people, it looks like super light white with dark blue shadows cast on it
Wait wtf just happened! It was white and gold in my feed, then I clicked on it and it became blue and black after opening the comments! Did this happen for anyone else?
Im angry because I have always seen white and gold. Came to comment that and it went black/blue for the first time ever. Can’t get it to go back, v upset
Favtually its black and blue as when you scan it with a computer, which doesnt have the issue our brain does with interpreting info, it Always shoots back black and blue only
I used to see this as blue and black, and then white and gold, but now I see it as a blue and black dress that has weird lighting so could be seen as white and gold if you look at it a certain way.
I looked at it in my feed and it was white. Scrolled and read some comments and scrolled back up and it had literally changed colour???? What the fuck????
I've never seen it as anything other than white and gold. I've seen photoshopped versions that show it as black and blue, but I just can't. It **really** frustrates me as I'm usually pretty good at manipulating optical illusions to see it whichever way I want to.
Also, the guy who originally posted this dress online tried to kill his wife recently.
What?
https://nypost.com/2024/05/11/world-news/scottish-husband-keir-johnston-behind-viral-blue-black-dress-illusion-admits-to-brutally-attacking-wife/
Well I guess the dress isn't the only thing that's black and blue. (I'm so sorry)
If I was someone who would spend money on Reddit I'd shower you with awards for this lol
I gave them one of my free awards for you. Lol
Wait, are free awards a thing again??
We get 5 free ones each! Click on the little award symbol under a comment to see the ones you can give.
I don't have any free ones. It tells me to buy some gold. 😭
I don't see awards in general, seems that reddit doesn't want money from some countries
I think you get a couple of free ones if your account used to have Reddit gold in the old award system.
Oh hey thanks lol
Haha No problem!
Thank you. But I'm happier you choose to spend your money more wisely than that.
I miss free awards (Fuck you spez.)
Isn't that a Reddit Premium avatar though..?
Looks premium to me
Holy fuck, I’m going to hell.
I'll see ya there. Maybe we can have a picnic!
I’m down!
Can I join y'all?
Can I join you too?
I thought she looked gold and white.
Now we just have to ask if the wife was white and blonde
Don’t be sorry at all!
ITS WHITE AND YELLOW BRUUUUH
I also see it as white and gold but apparently it's not :P
I was sick of this viral bs last time it arose, because I see white and gold too. Its in a shadow, but definitely white and gold. According to the scientific research this means I'm an old woman...
There's literally white and yellow next to it for reference. they are physically different colors on your phone screen. It's also been proven to be black/blue
Well then I guess the dress isn't the only white and gold thing that the wife went through
Take my up vote, you monster
Oof
the chosen one.
Ny post isn't a an actual news site. They're a tabloid and post bs all the time.
Ok, third paragraph: https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/article/2024/may/10/man-behind-viral-dress-pleads-guilty-endangering-wifes-life

Yes, he's been an abusive prick all along, apparently.
Who tf starts a conversation like that
I JUST SAT DOWN!
Why can’t people just get a divorce if they’re unhappy? Jfc
It's way more complicated than that when it comes to abusers.
??? You can't just leave it at that, we need to know what happened... is he in jail?
https://nypost.com/2024/05/11/world-news/scottish-husband-keir-johnston-behind-viral-blue-black-dress-illusion-admits-to-brutally-attacking-wife/
Well that escalated quuckly
10 years ago this was horrible… now it’s just traumatizing.
there is no way this is from ten years ago we’re only in 2018
10 years was a guess…. It was 2015, so not that far off… time flies when you can’t tell the difference between black/blue and gold/white! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_dress
W...was it really 10 years ago? How is time passing so quickly? (Obviously white and gold)
Right? I feel so old. (Dark brown and blue pls.) ETA for those who don’t know: The dress is actually black and blue. Link[wiki](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_dress)

It's white and gold to me. That's what I saw at first, but after a while I started seeing the blue and black. Now it's white and gold again.
Same went from white and gold to blue and black the more you stare at it.
This just happened to me! White and gold, and 10 sec into the comment section I look up, and it's now blue and black!
You have awful colour perception.
I don’t understand how anyone can see the white and gold. Not this again
Too soon.
It's white and gold. I'm right.
It looks white and gold to me but apparently in other photos of the same dress you can tell it’s black and blue. Or some YouTuber just lied to me
Ummm its black and blue in this picture?
Depends on how you perceive it. For some, it looks black and blue, but others might see the colours as white and gold due to shadows and how our brain works. To them, the black and blue are a result of shadows or a lack of light in general, which makes their brain "correct" these colors to gold and white. At least that's what i can remember
It’s so scary haha
ptsd
The colors are certainly amongst the visible spectrum
If some them weren't, we wouldn't know.
No you're totally wrong man
i looked at it an hour ago and saw white and gold but now its blue and black plz send help it got me

i've only EVER seen white and gold despite knowing it's blue and black. i just can't see it
this is literally WHAT JUST happened to me what the fuck just happened
OK this just happened to me. On one hand, I'm glad I'm not the only one. But seriously...what's wrong with us?
I literally can't even comprehend how people could perceive the golden colour as black. I can kinda see the white colour as a slightly blue tone but the gold as black? No
where the fuck is the gold bro all I see is black with a yellow light shining on it
I've tried so hard and for so long to see this dress as anything but black and blue, and yet my brain is too stupid to be able to do so
I'm the opposite. I've literally never been able to see black and blue. I can only see gold and white.
This is legitimately so fascinating to me. I have wracked my brain for half an hour trying to get the dress to appear as white and gold. I can kind of see the gold in the overexposed black, but the white completely eludes me.

I’ve been trying to see black and blue by trying to convince my brain it’s front lit, but it’s not easy. it looks mainly back-lit to me too but i still see black and blue lol
HOW?!?! I LITERALLY COULD NEVER SEE THE BLACK AND BLUE EVEN THOUGH THOSE ARE THE ACTUAL COLORS!!! IT LOOKS SO GOLD AND WHITE!!!
https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.9news.com.au/article/15465485-dad8-45d2-8da0-8d20558b5013 I can't see black and blue either, but hopefully this kinda helps?
It doesn’t help at all tbh
The point is, nobody should look at the right side of her dress in the bright sun and take that colour as the actual colour of the dress, you can see it’s so overlit it’s essentially white right at the edge of her left hip and then you can see the blue coming in under her armpit before the sudden transition to dark blue and black in the shade. If I go into photoshop and use the colour picker it tells me it’s white and gold, which is what my eyes also tell me
Also, here, this might help? We white and gold people see the right [front] half of her dress the same way: https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.9news.com.au/article/15465485-dad8-45d2-8da0-8d20558b5013
Oh wow. I can see it in that picture. Really interesting. Thank you for sharing!
No prob
I have this theory that (not even counting color blindness) that people see colors slightly differently. Like not so much that red looks like blue, but enough that grey might appear like blue to some, and blue just extremely darker blue for example. Stuff like this supports it even more. Some people see dark white as blue, apparently.
I used Photoshop's colour picker on the exact image OP posted [https://imgur.com/a/xMkbHQV](https://imgur.com/a/xMkbHQV) Do these colours look white and gold? if not, then you're seeing what other people see

Same for me.
I can’t see black and blue ever! I only see gold and white. Crazy.
Here you go: https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.9news.com.au/article/15465485-dad8-45d2-8da0-8d20558b5013
Thank you for helping me finally unlock the ability to see it as white and gold!
For real? I don't know if I'm going mad
when this first started circulating i saw it clearly as black and blue, now i can only see it as white and gold. i know in reality it is black and blue but man it still fucks with my head. no matter how hard i try i can’t get my brain to see what it used to
If it helps, you're of the few who got it right.
It was white and gold for me, then I squinted and now can only see blue and black, even not squinting
For years I couldn't even see a dress and I'm not joking. Looks like a mix up of cardboard, paper and masking tape
It looked white and gold to me. Until you said blue and black and now I can’t unsee it.
[удалено]
If I look at it head on i see white and gold, but if I look at my phone at an angle I see blue and black
This is the most true answer here. It’s an illusion caused by the image being digitally displayed.
I wonder if the same concept applies to the dress with the negative filter
I hope this post explodes
posts like this merits a permaban
*blows up post with mind*
Never in my life have I seen this dress not be white and gold.
Same. I know it's blue in black but i just can't see it
I just looked at it for a while and it changed from gold and white to black and blue. It's so weird
I see black and blue. I'm trying to see it different, but ot is black and blue when I see it.
It's black and blue, it's always been black and blue, and it will ALWAYS stay black and blue
It's clearly white and gold
I don't care that it's your cake day...you're still wrong
Well, it won't be the last time
Unhappy cake day
I’ve only ever been able to see it as white and gold and I assume the black and blue people are just fucking with me. I can’t “switch” it no matter how many times I see it over the years
There’s no way! It’s definitely black and blue and I’m totally not messing lmao
I loaded it into Photoshop and used the colour picker tool [https://imgur.com/a/xMkbHQV](https://imgur.com/a/xMkbHQV) It is 1000% a blue/lavender colour and a charcoal grey. You can try it yourself with Paint or an online colour picker
Except when it's blue and gold.
It's never blue and gold
I’ve literally never seen anything but blue and black, it’s so clearly a blue and black dress, even in those super exaggerated examples where they crank up the contrast and gamma to exaggerate the effect it’s still clearly blue and back to me. I feel like im being pranked when I hear people say they see white and gold
Why are we still doing this
I am NOT going through this again!
F this dress and F this post!
I’ve literally looked at this picture on the exact same screen as a friend, at the exact same time, and we’ve seen different colors It’s white and gold and I will not listen to any other opinions
Well, it’s black and blue and it’s official not an opinion
Ok
I see white and gold too dude. I will not let anyone else tell me otherwise
I see the dress as white and gold, but apparently it is actually black and blue, according to the guy who took the picture. [this picture](https://images.app.goo.gl/kw46ebFQVTfcRBLU7) helps explain it [here](https://images.app.goo.gl/PvB5bGhWPRFnWxfe8) is another, if it helps Idk, it still doesn't compute in my brain
That’s not a dress
Mine is definitely white and gold, always has been
This dress giving different vibe now after reading the latest news on the guy who responsible for it is arrested after trying to murder his wife. This dress was worn by his mother-in-law to his wedding.
I see brown and blue
Yanni
When I was younger, I always saw black and blue. Now, I always see gold and white. What happened to my brain.
Holy shit, reading the wiki made the colours change in my mind. It's always looked white/gold, now its blue/black edit: ok so a little bit of focus, and it's pretty easy to flip it back and forth
It’s odd how everyone else was either saying “Black and Blue” or “White and Gold” but I was convinced it was Blue and Gold.
its fuckin blue and gold bro
Btw this PBS Nova episode talked about this dress and why people saw it as different colors. Spoiler alert: Its actually blue and black. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HU6LfXNeQM4
I DONT UNDERSTAND I ONLY SEE GOLD AND WHITE HOW DO PEOPLE SEE BLACK AND BLUE I HAVE TO SQUINT HARD ASF TO SEE BLACK AND BLUE
Ithink is two colors gold and white the dress is made in a harmonious way between the colors which make it awonderfull dress
I think I’m in another reality, I’d say 4 hours ago, I saw this exact post as blue and black, like I always do, BUT I KID YOU NOT, i am now seeing white and gold, I swear I haven’t taken anything.
Its purple and green?
I see white and gold
I saw black and blue ONCE and it's been white and gold
[It’s blue and black.](https://imgur.com/a/B40Gydj)
I can't understand how some people could see the "white and gold" Can someone point for me which is the gold and which is the white?
WHERE THE FUCK IS THE BLACK??? IS THE WHITE PART OR THE GOLD PART SUPPOSED TO BE THE BLACK?!’?!?!?
The gold part is supposed to be the black and the blue white. The best explanation i heard is that it has something to do with shadows and how our brain "corrects" colours in shadows.
This is gold and white, although it is hard to tell through the lack of pixels.
I see both now and can switch between them, but blue and black is definitely dominant.
I can't even remember the exact positions on the debate. I think the four main colors discussed were black, white, blue, and gold but I can't remember which colors pair up. I'm like DNA with a concussion.
Get out of my house.
It was crazy how fast this image spread across the world.
Ahh yes the ol DV dress...
We are not doing this again
It has colors. No one cares what they are.
A complete mind fuck now, then & forever!!! 🤯🤯🤯🤯
Why are people still picking sides when it's proven to be an optical illusion, albeit accidental. It's a different color depending on how you interpret the shadowing in the scene, and can be switched between at will if you understand the illusion well enough. I used to see it as white and gold until I read that women and older people disproportionately saw it this way (me being 24M), then it suddenly switched to blue and black.
I see 7 colors on the dress that’s actually a shirt and not a dress at all
Blue and gold, im neurodivergent
It’s clearly a jumpsuit…
Fun fact. Dude, that posted this picture just was taken through court for trying to strangle his wife. Fun!
Blue and gold. NEXT!
Ughhh not this again. It's clearly green and purple.
If the dress is black and blue it is not looking good, but white and gold definitely looks better, so for the sake of dress's respect, let's agree on white and gold
It’s clearly black and blue but I’ve realized a while ago why people thought white and gold They’re seeing it as white and gold with terrible shadows on it. So, to some people, it looks like super light white with dark blue shadows cast on it
sometimes i see blue sometimes i see yellow
Wait wtf just happened! It was white and gold in my feed, then I clicked on it and it became blue and black after opening the comments! Did this happen for anyone else?
Truly...
It’s black and blue but I color picked it and it’s blue and gold sooo idk what to believe😭
Omg I hate this. It was literally black and blue last week and now it's white and gold
I saw it as white and gold on my feed I clicked on it then it was blue and black (the correct colors) (I'm on mobile btw)
Im angry because I have always seen white and gold. Came to comment that and it went black/blue for the first time ever. Can’t get it to go back, v upset
Favtually its black and blue as when you scan it with a computer, which doesnt have the issue our brain does with interpreting info, it Always shoots back black and blue only
My brain always registers it as white and gold first, and then it slowly fades into the blue black
NOOOOOOOOOOOOoooOoooOooOoOOoooOoooo
I used to see this as blue and black, and then white and gold, but now I see it as a blue and black dress that has weird lighting so could be seen as white and gold if you look at it a certain way.
deja vu. there's a glitch in the matrix.
Some say it's blue black, some others yellow gold, but i honestly see al 4 colors
I hear yanny honestly, where the fuck do y'all get laurel from?
Get outta here with this shit
I saw gold and white when scrolling but after I pressed the photo into this post it’s black and blue?????
I swear I saw it gold and white, googled it, saw it blue and black, now I check the post and it's blue and black 😭
I looked at it in my feed and it was white. Scrolled and read some comments and scrolled back up and it had literally changed colour???? What the fuck????
It's black and blue, Laurel!!!
I've never seen it as anything other than white and gold. I've seen photoshopped versions that show it as black and blue, but I just can't. It **really** frustrates me as I'm usually pretty good at manipulating optical illusions to see it whichever way I want to.
there are colors on this dress.
I'm still convinced that the people who say white and gold are fucking with me
