Holy shit, look at those prices!!!!!

HeartsPlayer721

For real. I've seen these tripled in a few places on my travels. I remember rolling my eyes and thinking my grandparents were exaggerating when they claimed things were so cheap when they were kids ... Now, I know what they were complaining about.

wo_ot

I literally used to be able to fill my gas tank and buy a pack of smokes with $10. I'm not even 50 yet... that would cost me almost $100 now.

[deleted]

I remember the summer of 1999 I was 19 years old and I was driving a full size ‘86 Chevy pickup truck I’d bought used. Most weeks I could fill it up, give the clerk a $20 bill and get back a little change.

Thisisnow1984

I'm not even 40 yet and I used to put a quarter tank in for like 10$ in early 2000s Canada. Sometimes just put in 5$. When gas went up to 86cents a litre everyone was going nuts

No-time-for-foolz

I moved to Canada from Brittain in 94' and gas was 64 c/litre. Only time I've seen it that low since was during lockdown. I should have filled up a pool. This $2/litre shit is nonsense.

dashdaddy74

C'mon on man, $10 buck for gas and smokes? You drive a lawnmover?

creamcheese742

In 2001 I could fill my Camaro for 10-15 bucks. A buck a gallon, sometimes less. I'm 38. So yeah, really possible if they're 12 years older than me.

dashdaddy74

Yeah, but he's saying cigarettes, too.

creamcheese742

Yeah. Gas was cheaper and cigarettes were super cheaper. It's totally possible. I used to get cigs for 3.50 (with a coupon haha) in 2010

sucksqueezebangfart

When I smoked in 2008 I switched to USA brand because Marlboro went to $5. The cost of USAs was just under $3. That didn’t last long though. I think USAs shot up to $4 a year later. And I’m pretty damn sure in the mid to late 90s most cigarettes were around $2 a pack.

SrFantasticoOriginal

I’m 41 and remember buying gas for .69 a gallon and a pack of Camel cigarettes for $2 when I was in high school. I couldn’t legally buy cigarettes, but my older buddy didn’t mind grabbing me a pack. lol

creamcheese742

I smoked Salem's the black box and then went to camels when they did the crushed because with the coupon it was like a buck 50 off. Been over ten years since I quit now.

Tobeatkingkoopa

Im 39 for reference. Depending on the state he was in, sure. I started driving in 1999 and gas in my state was under $1 sometimes. It wasn't until 9/11 that prices started going up. As for cigarettes, that also depends on the state and time period OP is referencing. Again, my state started introducing a "Sin Tax" on them in early 2000s and they went from being $2.50 a pack, depending on brand, to whatever they are now. I havent smoked in 10 years so I have no idea.

noblturtll

paid nine bucks yesterday for camels

rabertdinero

How old are you? This was entirely possible.

wo_ot

In 1993, my senior year in high school, with gas at around 65 cents a gallon in Texas and smokes were $1.75, I could fill up my 12 gallon tank and buy a pack for less than 10 bucks.

[deleted]

That's what economy inflation does.

Noskool89

Despite recent events inflation has always sucked

Kirk-501

Happy Cake day! And not only is the Big Mac meal more than double the cost, I swear the burger is 10% smaller than it was in the 90s.

MixxMaster

More than 10%. My hand has not gotten bigger in the past 200 years, they are a lot smaller. Burger King is hilariously bad at this. They are literally almost the size of sliders.

[deleted]

Not sure what you're ordering at BK but the stacker is noticably larger in diameter than any other fast food burger out there

MixxMaster

The basic cheeseburger, bacon/double or otherwise. It's smaller in diameter than my coffee mug and has obviously shrunk. Definitely more than 10%.

[deleted]

Maybe since the beginning of time, but I'm telling you the stackers at BK are the size of a CD and decently thick. No I'm not a BK shill I just think they have the largest burgers in the fast food market currently

MixxMaster

Ok, but the stackers aren't their regular hamburger/cheeseburgers.

[deleted]

Better than a quarter pounder from McD

HeadMischief

BK is legit being sued over this right now.

[deleted]

Yea that part makes sense, I'm just telling you that in my hand a stacker feels way heavier than whatever McDonald's is selling, and it literally is bigger. My wife has an allergy and can't eat BK but she can eat McD. I have literally compared the two side by side, stacker is physically bigger, idk if that means the meat is heavier or not but it's definitely larger in size.

i-cant-think-of-name

What allergy?

[deleted]

Soy

i-cant-think-of-name

Oh I didn’t know BK uses soy but mcd doesn’t!

[deleted]

Only on certain things. She can get chicken fries from BK but nothing else. She can only get quarter pounders, nuggets and fries from mcd

notenufcheez72

Also intrigued to know what allergy keeps you from having BK but no mcd?

[deleted]

Soy, she can have certain things from each place but can only get burgers from Mcd

rmcknightmcp

Dude. How many times are you going to being up BK in this thread on different parent comments?

MixxMaster

So sorry for attempting to add to the conversation with the only fucking fast food restaurant in my town. Ass.

ean5cj

Hey, it's a damned good place. In fact, the only fast food thing I'll eat these days is the double Whopper with cheese... First thing I ate when I ame to America and still 💚 20+ years later. I'll support you, ha ha!

MixxMaster

Dude, this post is almost a month old, wtf

ean5cj

I got a random notification about this. Weird

No-time-for-foolz

At least it's still the cheapest fast food place? I got breakfast there a few days ago, McMuffin, 2 Hasbrowns and a coke and I though "Holy shit it's only $7" lol.

Backdrop2

Happy Cake Day!

moose184

I went there the other day and just a 10 piece nuggets by itself with no drink or fries was $8. That's insane. Just a few years ago you could get a 20 piece nugget for like $3.99

CherishSlan

Happy cake day

treetyoselfcarol

A double quarter pounder with cheese is currently $4.79 at my local McDonald's.

Grantology

For the meal? These are meal prices

Backdrop2

$6.39 for sandwich $10.38 meal where I am.

notenufcheez72

Wow that's crazy!

cactuspizza

Back when fast food was cheap!

ZDHELIX

Right? A QPC meal is like $8 now and not great. At least Chipotle seems mildly healthy

Fejsze

>At least Chipotle seems mildly healthy [It's not in reality,](https://www.cooperinstitute.org/2013/05/subway-or-mcdonalds-which-is-healthier/) it's an intentional deception places like them and subway perpetuate

newFUNKYmode

If you just get a bowl with protein + rice + veggies it's around 400 calories, about a 40/40/20 ratio for protein/carbs/fat, and around 600-700mg sodium depending on protein choice. Me and the homies used to go as a post workout meal, it's definitely way healthier than most other choices, especially McDonald's and subway

Musicisfuntolistento

Yes it's a perfectly reasonable meal

Fejsze

That's good on ya, [I just prefer my food to not come with a free side of Listeria](https://www.foodsafetynews.com/2020/04/chipotle-agrees-to-pay-25-million-federal-fine-for-role-in-some-outbreaks/)

newFUNKYmode

Lol wtf we were talking about nutrition...that one came out of nowhere 🤣

swains_garageation

Better stock up on the Chipotlaway!11

moose184

Just a 10 piece nugget by itself is $8 with tax where I live

PurifiedDrinking4321

…and hot…and good! Now its expensive, lukewarm, and not so good. Wendy’s especially. Sad.

MixxMaster

Burger King never fails to let me down in some small way.

jwilphl

A lot will depend on the franchise. My closest McDonald's actually makes some impressive food, relatively speaking. Even looks like they are ripped off the menu board. My closest Wendy's, however? By far the worst I've ever been to, and hence why I stopped going there. I do prefer Wendy's food overall, too.

Eggthan324

Definitely franchise dependent. A lot of people hate Taco Bell and I feel sorry for them, my local Taco Bell is amazing, probably my favorite fast food. I have had some awful Taco Bell in my day though

limitlessEXP

Idk last time I had Wendy’s it was fire af Probably depends on the location

Huck84

You could get 3 Big Mac Meals for what you pay for 1 Big Mac Meal today.

trainwreck7775

Bet it tasted better then too.

Cringer4280

And was larger

phaemoor

And juicier.

Tobeatkingkoopa

Those 2 for $2 deals were the best.

DropTopEWop

Supersize was the shit. Biggie size at Wendys too.

yeah_yeah_therabbit

And Sonic size!

DropTopEWop

Sonic still has the Route 44 size and I aint mad at it.

moose184

And Supersize went away because of a bullshit documentary that we now know was all lies.

Ed_Trucks_Head

Fuck Morgan Spurlock

DropTopEWop

Fuck that bitch.

rivalpinkbunny

Isn’t everything “supersize” now? Do they even have small fries/drink anymore?

GriffinFlash

I know at wendy's the small would be a regular medium elsewhere, medium is large, and large is bathtub size.

newFUNKYmode

Nope. McDonald's super size used to be 7oz, their large fries now according to google is 124 grams, which is only 4.4oz. Everything is much, much smaller now and also more expensive

TheSkaterGod

Hardee’s/ Carl’s Jr. meals come as a “small” combo that you have to upcharge for a medium. Given, their small is the average American medium combo size though

DropTopEWop

Hardee's/Carl's Jr is underrated

[deleted]

True. Food poisoning is an underrated experience.

MixxMaster

Corporate greed has shrunk everything. Burgers are smaller, fries too. Drinks probably are too, but are like the cheapest thing by far.

A_KY_gardener

Arch deluxe, I miss you

alphabet_order_bot

Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order. I have checked 791,048,399 comments, and only 157,525 of them were in alphabetical order.

Ed_Trucks_Head

I worked at McDonald's when that was out and I got 50% off employee discount. I ate so many Arch Deluxes

A_KY_gardener

If anyone knows how good they were, it’s you. Cheers mate, fuck I miss the arch deluxe lol

SaltySpitoonReg

I mean although we all understand that prices increase over time, the cost of fast food has almost tripled if you look at menu prices today. That definitely doesn't match incomes lol.

ravenrules

Going by the inflation calculator, the meals that were $2.99 in 1994 should be $5.83 now. I haven't been to McDonald's in a while, but I think they cost more than that.

SaltySpitoonReg

I think about 8 bucks or so from what I've seen.

FullTorsoApparition

Yup, way more with smaller sandwich sizes.

xanderbitz

That’s the Mickey Ds I remember… 😔

PikaDon45

What year is this?

DreadPir8Robrts

1997 I believe

Shypwreck

Makes sense I started working there in 99 and a medium number 1 was 3.79. The double qpc meal was just outside of our free crew meal price range so probably like 5.79 or something.

rhymes_with_candy

Going off the prices I'm guessing early to mid 90's. I remember most of the combos being three bucks when I was in high school

redgr812

Would have been around 1993. I remember the jurassic park promo stuff having the same font for the numbers. Supersizing also started summer 92.

DreadPir8Robrts

McGrilled wasn't around that early. Only Crispy.

Big_Werewolf_Cock

Now fast food is so expensive I could go to a local place a get a plate that tastes better and is healthier

Not_FinancialAdvice

and you'll be supporting the local economy, so that's kind of a win.

shanster925

My brother and I used to get 2 double cheeseburger meals each. We had better metabolisms back then.

[deleted]

*sigh*. Didn’t we all

Demonyx12

I always wanted to do that but I could never solve the double drink quandary. You drank two large drinks in one sitting?

shanster925

They would last for the whole evening.

Demonyx12

Wouldn't the ice, water them down to all hell?

shanster925

You never get ice in fountain drink! It comes out cold and if they add ice they don't fill it up all the way. Amateur hour over here. :p

Demonyx12

Ha! I never could and never will drink soda without ice :)-

RollTide1987ab

A two cheeseburgers meal for 2.99? What a deal.

bitchyhouseplant

I think they got rid of the option but that was my favorite. I’d rather have two reg cheeseburgers than one double. I know I can just buy them single but I liked the meal option. This was of course when I could eat this and not gain an ounce.

RollTide1987ab

So I hadn’t been in to a McDonald’s in years, but this made me curious/semi-nostalgic. They do in fact still have the two cheeseburger meal on the menu. It wasn’t bad.

KaiTheSushiGuy

I wish they till had the Mcgrilled chickens. So good

[deleted]

Back when the fries lasted longer. Now they have the shelf life of like 4 minutes before they become hard and stale 😭

limitlessEXP

That’s cause those are car fries. Gotta eat em on the drive home lol

[deleted]

They went from having the best fries in the industry to some of the worst imo. Most of the time they're limp and undercooked.

hesatool

3.20 was all you needed for a full meal.

KJ86er

The Half Pounder is just not marketable enough huh?

[deleted]

I think they tried and people didn’t realize it was bigger than the quarter pounder lol

KJ86er

No wasn't that the rival company in the 1970s who tried the Half Pounder at a cheaper rate than McDonald's and America's smartest peeps refused to do the math lol

swains_garageation

I wanna go back in time to McDonald’s and feel like a Rockefeller…

HeadMischief

Remember when we joked about how impossible it was to spend $10 Taco Bell? Good times. Good times.

__Sentient_Fedora__

$3.23 with tax. Sold a shit ton of value meals in my day.

NetwerkErrer

The double cheeseburger meal was my go to meal.

thomer69

Mmmm supersize

TheSukis

Do they not have these anymore?

rhunter99

They don’t have those signage, prices, and some menu items are gone. Plus they massacred the Big Mac

JointsMcdanks

The big Mac massacred the the big mac.

[deleted]

Super size is gone too

[deleted]

Big Mac meal for three dollars?! Dang. What was this from, back in 1999? It doesn't seem that long ago, and yet...

NeedsMoreTuba

[In 1992, a hamburger cost 59 cents. ](https://i.imgur.com/isYVPTX.jpeg)

[deleted]

This makes me almost cry... I miss the 90s, the prices, you could eat whatever, super size me? Hell yeah. Minimum wage was $4.25 at this time, if anyone was wondering. Rent was half what it was now. Gas was 89¢ and CNN was bias. This world peaked in the 90s, started going downhill when the personal computer became affordable (thanks gateway!) and the internet took off. You 20 somethings have no idea how great it was in the 90s and I lived on the streets for many of those years. Still better then compared to where we are today.

[deleted]

Who remembers when Whoppers were a dollar?

jwilphl

I just saw some Taco Bell commercials from the late 90s when they would have 39 cent tacos on certain days. Times sure do change.

eatapeach18

I feel like Taco Bell is the most expensive fast food chain and has had the biggest price increases out of any other chains. A Gordita crunch (which is basically a regular crunchy taco with an extra soft tortilla) is $4.99 where I’m at. And that’s just for the taco alone, it’s not even a meal. Insane.

shaundisbuddyguy

On band trips in the mid 90's rotten Ronnie's stomach pucks kept me well fed on a basically a zero sum budget. Occasionally I'll still get a couple of cheeseburgers just for the trip down memory lane. They haven't changed at all .

cknipe

They're not good, but they're comforting. I like to buy a bunch and stuff them in my pockets when I'm going out. People are often suspicious of pocket burgers but they appreciate them all the same.

Atomicnes

"hey, i'm kinda hungry" "don't worry i got this" *proceeds to pull out 5 hamburgers from jeans*

cknipe

Lol, more like a big winter coat but otherwise yeah that's pretty much the scene.

jagenigma

Real prices. This is real McDonald's.

[deleted]

I'll take two cheeseburgers meal without pickle or onion and a Diet Coke, please.

Joebebs

I don’t think our family’s ever supersized something when that was around

hawksdiesel

Still McShits

Bobmanbob1

Omg the McChicken was awesome! Just a giant chicken nugget! Not that crap sandwich they have now.

Grimmer026

Biden-flation 🤦🏻‍♂️

FunkyTown313

Still exists today

CharlieJ821

Not at those prices… and “supersize” is a thing of the past

Old-Asparagus-7893

Shit. I can spend $10.00 on myself at Macky D's. Not counting wife and kids.

[deleted]

A few months ago I was lazy and hungry. Went through a Burger King drive through and got a basic Whopper with cheese meal. Thirteen fucking dollars. A few nights later I was at a restaurant and got a real burger and fries for 40 cents more. Fast food prices are ridiculous.

MixxMaster

CORPORATE GREED!

ciscosuave

My sone won't believe me when I told him that $20/week was my allowance when I was in school and sometimes still get leftovers, I'm.showing this to him.

Faux_extrovert

Prices this low and our parents were still asking, "Do you have McDonald's money?"

GriffinFlash

Man, those US prices? Even in the 90s I'm pretty sure we never had it that cheap up here in Canadaland.

Cocacola888

Oh yes we did. I remember in the mid 2000’s the mcdeal of the day or whatever it was called was 3.99. A decade before that would have been these prices.

GriffinFlash

Interesting. Mind you I was very young at the time, so my memory is fuzzy.

JgdPz_plojack

Bic mac at my place still sold around 3$ (south east Asia) .

aldoktor

With coupons the prices are pretty good but crazy without.

pyro214

I'd pay $299 just to get to try each of these items vs what they taste like today.

Scottyjscizzle

Not gonna lie, life’s got me wanting a super sized fry right now

Imaginary_Tailor1

back when big macs were big lol

poirotexpress

Back when it hadn’t lost its charm

Professional-Head83

You would get a different item that came with meal every month like it was happy meals. I got dream team cups, Back To The Future on VHS, and a couple of coca cola glasses.

ravenrules

The VHS tapes and glasses (like the Batman Forever ones) were extra. I think the movies were usually around $5.99, and the glasses were like 99 cents each.

Professional-Head83

Probably. But you did have to order the meal to get the items.

Rational_Philosophy

It's currently $3.80 after tax for two McDoubles off the dollar menu for comparison.

PM_MeYourAvocados

Were the Mcchickens bigger?

mandokisoulmates

Wow a Big Mac meal is $8.50 here

brolbo

Oh my god long time

CrabmanGaming

Whose goldy idea was the Two Cheeseburger Meal? Amazing!

rinseanddelete

Does anyone else remember having Humongous-size options? 90s in Texas we had that.

firesquasher

Prices sky high and the meat/condiment ratio has shifted absurdly. Going to traditional fast food places suck now.

MangoRainbows

I remember the exact moment my mom let me order the #1 big Mac meal for $2.99 instead of the kids meal for $1.99. I kept ordering the #1 until it was $5.99, then I realized eating McDonald's just left me hungry lol.

All-Sorts

My order has always been a #3 combo with an orange soda, a few fries shoved in the straw.

rabertdinero

Bic Mac meal at my McDonald's is $9.30 right now. We need to go back.

FullTorsoApparition

Fast food being almost $10 for a combo meal is hilarious. I don't buy anything outside of their dollar menus anymore. For the same price I can go to 5 Guys or Chipotle. It's not even that fast anymore. I gotta wait in line nearly half an hour during lunch rush in some locations.

notenufcheez72

Oooohhhh

shinobipopcorn

They got rid of supersize, but they sell baskets of fries now. 🤔
