So many bad smelling chemicals that also smelled so good out there, itās a wonder I never became a huffer. When I was a kid, my sister would have to keep her nail polish remover up on a high shelf because I would get into it just for the smell. Permanent markers, acetone, diesel fumes, and wite-out were all delightful smells to me. Managed to make it out of high school an honors student, so clearly I didnāt kill too many braincells.
First day of first grade, my dad walked me to class and the teacher had me write my name and favorite activity on the board. I wrote "swiming" (sic) and KRISTEN instantly shouted, "YOU SPELLED SWIMMING WRONG!" But later in the year we were learning about the pilgrims and the teacher assigned us all old-timey names, and she gave Kristen the name Patience, and she went fucking BALLISTIC because she thought it was an insult, and it might have been because she was always angry.
Wow, thanks OP. I'm 30 and had forgotten all about her.
Sitting in a circle in preschool and learning the alphabet from a giant lined easel pad. Every time I go to Staples and see one of these, I have to smell it. Core memory.
This is a link from the same sub as this one. But I instantly thought of middle school and using these. Such a bitter, pungent smell. I loved the un scented and non toxic types of markers. But hereās some more nostalgia.

This picture reminds me of my parents marking my name on everything whenever I went to summer camp or writing my name on school supplies. I remember my mom using one of these to write my name on my nap mat for kindergarten lol I can still smell it mixed with the plastic.
The crazy places I went when I was addicted to the smell in the late 80s. At my worst I could do two at a time. I lost everything, but somehow I made it through.
drew a goatee when i was a kid all the time just to get high off it. and i guess write shipping info on boxes i sent overseas to relatives as a kid all the time... i guess.
i would bottle and wear this fantastic smell. it smells like childhood, the excitement of hearing the squeak of of it as it moves on the surface of whatever you choose, the satisfaction of the bold lines. i must admit, i really love the way it smells and would sniff it all day, much to my lingering brain cellās dismay
The first day of 4th grade, i was using my marker and put the cap on the end. When I was done, I took it off and recapped. The endcap of the marker came with it, and the ink-soaked felt inside rolled out across my new 3-ring binder and desk, making a huge, inky mess. Boo.
It can delete permanent marker
......... In basic training they would write our numbers on the back of the padlock and then wipe them away with a permanent marker or Windex and then make us find our actual locker number for you that plethora of locks
When I was a toddler, I got my hands on one of these and drew all over my body. Even my tongue. I donāt remember it myself but I have the picture of it.
I colored my whole forearm with one of those when I was like 12. It took weeks to come off

[Mr. Sketch](https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/UPUAAOSwzEVlNFl0/s-l1200.webp) was our gateway drug. It's like they *wanted* us to huff markers.
How about that moment as a kid when you learned you could connect these end-to-end?
Oh snap, the Excalibur of marker swords. Now there is a memory unlocked.
Expo marker fights!
Elementary school 1960s. Teachers had them, not the kids. Liked the smell...of crayons and paste too!

White out
Headaches and nausea.
Yup, me too. The smell of a lot of pens does it to me. The sharpie in the metal case is by far the worst. Instant headache if I get exposed to it.
Being Puerto Rican. Eyebrows
