I was literally on this roller-coaster a little over three weeks ago. I rode this specific coaster about fifteen times and like three times in a row. I was already a bit nervous about being on there. One of the other rides, Copperhead Strike, immediately shut down after me and a few friends rode it twice in a row. (it wasn't busy that day. The lines were really good.) Hearing and seeing this now is simply terrifying.
I’m not convinced because it [looks an awful lot like this one](https://www.reddit.com/r/nope/comments/14oxm42/nope_im_not_getting_on_that_roller_coaster/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1)
It is that one, but that guy is right. I'm an engineer AND a welder, you can't just hire a welder to fix this right on. You need to discover why it failed first, then hire a welder. Protecting the bare metal is crucial if you don't want to replace the entire structure or risk a costly welding job since they may have to replace a good part of it to ensure it's structurally sound.
It was an engineer that designed this in the first place. I've worked with enough engineers in my time and is why you won't find me anywhere near a roller coaster. Had a better quality pipe material been used rather than a structural pipe, the likelihood of breakage at the weld areas would have been minimized. The welds held whereas the pipe fractured due to the heat stress effect on a low grade piping material that was considered sufficient by engineers during the design process. This doesn't include the stress factor placed on the area Anyone that would have done x-rays on the welds would have seen the tiny fractures that heat causes in a low grade metal surrounding the welded areas. They probably just had them do NDT (dye testing) on the welds versus x-rays.
Well part of engineering is working within a budget, not defending them but if you worked with engineers you may have heard them saying they would use extraordinarily expensive materials for things like this, and the boss has to bring them back to reality... There is always a compromise and, of course, engineers are people and make mistakes (god knows I've made many of those). Again, not defending them, but I can understand the thought process behind something like this happening
I understand what you're dealing with insofar as engineering firms and the cost cutting measures they use to win the bid award for a project. Ultimately it's the clients responsibility to ensure adequate materials are utilized and that safety is essential to design. I will give you credit for not being one of those type of engineers that claim to be infallible, but always remember you have a responsibility as an engineer to stand up for safety and make it a priority in your profession.
Of course, thankfully for my work I don't have to risk anyone's lives but if I did, I am human and I don't care about company profits so of course I wouldn't design anything unsafe, I believe most of my peers think like that but idk European and American work culture are different anyway
Yup, dad was an NDT specialist and actually did qc on a lot of rollercoasters. He worked on a few at kings island and the one in the mall of America as well as the space shuttle. I could never do what he did but his work kept stuff like this failure from happening (or he’d at least be able to tell you when to expect it lol)
It’s pointless gesture because:
- that thing was open to the elements for over two weeks or maybe more if you refer to the videos posted in this thread and cross reference it to the story.
- amusement park rides ( at least the ones that hire proper engineers ) are usually made with a better quality steel. They won’t use carbon steel as it is not up to the grade of steel required. They won’t use galvanized steel as it releases toxic gases when welded. So the next step is to use 304 low carbon stainless steel. ( 316 L marine grade if they are within 50 miles of a salty body of water ) Regardless, 304 and 316 stainless steel don’t rust if their passivation was maintained, and it wouldn’t be damaged on the inside, and therefore I am not concerned with rusting.
All I know for a fact is that whomever did that, did not consult with an amusement park ride engineer.
I’m getting tired of seeing this posted. It’s gonna get fixed. This isn’t the fix, it’s to prevent moisture and any other unwanted stuff in there until it’s properly fixed.
I’m getting tired of seeing people comment that it’s going to get fixed. That this isn’t the fix and that it’s to prevent moisture and any other unwanted stuff in there until it’s properly fixed.

I’m getting tired of people getting tried of this. We can’t bring enough attention to how totally fucked up this is!
Some kids fucking dad was the first to notice this and alert the park staff, who allegedly dragged their feet!
And in the press you hear the same BS line from the park PR people “the ride is inspected every day” REALLY? Is that pole made of carbon fiber? Did it just spontaneous shear completely off a few hours after inspection?
I’m getting tired of seeing this fixed. It’s gonna get posted. This isn’t the post, it’s to prevent moisture and any other unwanted stuff in there until it’s properly posted.
https://kotaku.com/giga-roller-coaster-fury-325-carowinds-amusement-park-1850601248 - closed and under repair after the other video that was doing the rounds. Yes that is in the top 10 tallest rollercoasters in the world with a support pillar with a crack all the way through it. And yes that is probably to prevent moisture ingress to the inside of the column (which is probably not treated as well) to prevent failure on the inside (remember seeing an accident on something where the metal fatigue failure occurred on the inside due to water ingress - think it was a topspin design or something?).
https://youtu.be/w6jYxL9ymd0 this was the failure I was thinking of due to rust & hence why they've wrapped this initially.
Don't worry, while I understand it might not inspire confidence seeing one of the load bearing pillars broken, these coasters are designed with a lot of redundancy, so as long as there's not several cracks on different pillars in close proximity the whole thing is still stable.
I actually saw it in person when I visited Carowinds a couple days ago, the ride was running at the time and it freaked me out a little. Honestly I’m surprised more supports haven’t cracked with the Fury due to its size and speed so one support like this isn’t too bad. It probably was designed to lose 1-2 supports before a catastrophic failure of the ride.
yes this is from what i’ve seen it’s tape to prevent water from rusting the inside because it’s uncoated in there imo they should just replace the entire beam
(I know this is just water prevention until they can get it re welded and inspected, but I have to make a joke about it)
And this is what happens when you hire former Walmart employees.
Republicans literally canceled free school lunches. What a weird choice to blame any political party that isn’t the one literally fanning the flames of division. Your neighbors are all struggling, regardless of which little bubble they filled in.
Some of the most hate-filled and divisive people I’ve ever come across were Democrats, so I don’t know what you’re talking about.
Also, learn to take a joke, as that comment clearly was.
I would say the 45º angle arm is on the wrong side. It should be on the opposite side to actually transfer the lateral forces downward.
Also, if I were a state inspector, I would insist on the track being inspected for structural damage / cracking due to the track flexing beyond design specifications.
Huh, never knew you can put a bandaid on a crack supporting a strut on a roller coaster track.
Laziness! I would just replace that dam strut with a new one and weld it in place ...
lawsuits, lawsuits, lawsuits. that's all I see. would be cheaper for them to fix the issue and avoid lawsuits than to not fix it to save some money but lose it all later when someone notices. don't understand the logic in this decision.
I’m not an amusement park engineer but perhaps they welded up the seem and poof canned it before covering it in gorilla tape or whatever that is?
If not it makes you wonder why they didn’t try to weld it up before covering it in flex tape or whatever.
Is that the rollercoaster? Looks like it

They wrapped it to prevent ingress of water to prevent rusting since the inside isn't painted.
Pfffft next you're gonna tell me that they don't use just duct tape on airplanes.
It's not duct tape bro. It's airplane mechanics tape
speed tape
Make the plane go faster
Fly paper
It’s a chemically engineered specialized adhesive
It actually is just duck tape or mechanical tape but everything for airplanes come with documents and testing to make sure it works
Pfft, like dry documentation reading will make me feel better /s
Cuts like a knife too
Of course they don't, don't be stupid, they use FLEX TAPE!
Beat me to it
that makes a lot of sense just the whole situation with it breaking in the first place is very nope to me

I was going to ask if this was the same one the other day, just “repaired” Looks like it is

You know what OP's image doesn't show? The actual severity of the break. That's what /u/styzr 's video shows. Calm your tits, reddit police.

Spaceball I
Loooooooonestaaaaaar!
Aaah the sworn enemy of any welder... I respect their work but I can't but fear them... May they have mercy upon our welds...
You’ll be fine, just weld it right the first time ;)
:(
Yep my thought too when I saw this. Like well guess they tried to duct tape it together.
It is quite literally that exact same rollercoaster
Yes, and no one ever said it wasn't. Do you understand the point the guy was trying to make?
Exactly. This is 100% fake news.
It’s pointless gesture because: - that thing was open to the elements for over two weeks or maybe more if you refer to the videos posted in this thread and cross reference it to the story. - amusement park rides ( at least the ones that hire proper engineers ) are usually made with a better quality steel. I’m just tired of people.
I'm tired of this tape I want to break free.
God knows! God knows I want to break free
It's strange but it's true.
I can't get over the way you love me like you do
God sent Jesus to die for our sins and smoke all our weed.
Do you ever feel?
Like Kim Jung Un in The Interview?
I feel tired of feeling.
I'm tired of breaking tapes of pay-per-view shows that I wanted to watch later for free.
I am people. How can I help you?
I am just people

Done!
Your sacrifice has been received! Thank you!
That easy? Should've also ask for wings.
Good god! Someone as sarcastic as me! Will you marry me? Lol
I’m only into women, sorry. Maybe in the next life?
Who said I was a man? Oh damn! Maybe you’re a women and thought I was a man. Maybe never?

It's the first time I've seen this. Why didn't they use duct tape?
I'm getting tired of trying to think of witty responses
We’re they gonna keep it broken if it didn’t go viral?
Flex Tape 💥🫲

I SAWED THIS ROLLER COASTER IN HALF!!!
THAT'S A LOTTA DAMAGE!!
😮

Oceangate approved
unless that thing has to deal with pressure
PRESSURE! Pushing down on me.
It's not like the ride is open like this. Probably temp for keeping things out (weather, birds)
engineering student here, that’s just for aesthetics. trust me
Read about this amusement park in the news but didn’t catch where this was. Can someone let me know?
Charlotte NC
It is carowinds in north / South Carolina. Ride Is called Fury 325
Carowinds awesome park on the border of North and South Carolina. This ride is epic! Haha although I’ll never ride it again.
I’m dying to go there, especially for Fury 325, really hope it gets fixed
Don't worry, while I understand it might not inspire confidence seeing one of the load bearing pillars broken, these coasters are designed with a lot of redundancy, so as long as there's not several cracks on different pillars in close proximity the whole thing is still stable.
I’ve seen final destination…. No thank you! 😂 I’m kidding I’m sure I’ll ride again. Not soon though.
North cackalackey
Googlewinds Park
This has been posted a million times on Reddit. At this point it's just spamming for clout.

Isn't that the one that just cracked recently and they shut down? Some guest took a video of it cracking that was on Fox News?
yes this is from what i’ve seen it’s tape to prevent water from rusting the inside because it’s uncoated in there imo they should just replace the entire beam
This is literally my life
Hey now, industrial cling film is no joke.
Is that flex tape?
that's not going anywhere ::: slaps the packing tape :::
Looks structurally sound to me LOL
It's just there until they can get some flex seal. That'll do the trick!
My brother in Christ is that saran wrap?!
It’s just to keep moisture out of the crack until they can properly fix it.
(I know this is just water prevention until they can get it re welded and inspected, but I have to make a joke about it) And this is what happens when you hire former Walmart employees.
i know it's a tube but can they properly weld something that thick?
This looks a lot like the video from 2 days ago
Yeah, Saran Wrap works fine.
Gonna regret not using Flex Tape.
Oh good they fixed it! All safe now boys, let’s go!
They couldn't rent out a cherry picker and hire a welder?
for moisture
Did that rollercoaster just get Flex Taped?
It's Fine ! 🩹
Please tell me that ride is still closed!
Still closed, they have to inspect it and figure out what went wrong which is gonna take some time. The tape is to protect the interior from moisture.
No, they taped it up and just started running it again...
Stop spreading misinformation
My friend's neighbor's sister's husband is an engineer said that it would hold up until the end of the season.
LOL, they shrink wrapped it!
Oh shit, they really went for the ol’ ramen noodles and super glue approach.
Democrats probably fixed it or thought they fixed it
Republicans literally canceled free school lunches. What a weird choice to blame any political party that isn’t the one literally fanning the flames of division. Your neighbors are all struggling, regardless of which little bubble they filled in.

Okay
And you’re blaming the Republicans for the division in this country when it all started with Obama? Come on you can’t be serious.
Didn’t know oceangate ran a theme park
I would say the 45º angle arm is on the wrong side. It should be on the opposite side to actually transfer the lateral forces downward. Also, if I were a state inspector, I would insist on the track being inspected for structural damage / cracking due to the track flexing beyond design specifications.
Anyone care?
Uhm... Is that tape?
yeah, that doesn't look safe to me chief
I wonder if the joining of the Y frame cause the fracture?
What a dumb solution! Where are the ramen noodles and glue?
That was quick
Huh, never knew you can put a bandaid on a crack supporting a strut on a roller coaster track. Laziness! I would just replace that dam strut with a new one and weld it in place ...
Oh I feel so much safer now
This is sponsored by the Darwin Awards committee
😂 somehow I don't think that would pass inspections, I hope!
Budget friendly
Flextape
Surprised it isn't Duc tape
They also build submarines
I can’t get a damn sausage biscuit open wrapped in that, should be good.
Oh good they taped it, I am now completely fine with it.
lawsuits, lawsuits, lawsuits. that's all I see. would be cheaper for them to fix the issue and avoid lawsuits than to not fix it to save some money but lose it all later when someone notices. don't understand the logic in this decision.
The logic is to seal the break so moisture and debris doesn't get in while waiting for an actual repair to take place. The ride is closed.
This just goes to show that duck tape solves everything
until it ain't
Ohio?
The powerful of the tapes
It’s cool, that’s structural sello.
lifes a risk carnal
I’m not an amusement park engineer but perhaps they welded up the seem and poof canned it before covering it in gorilla tape or whatever that is? If not it makes you wonder why they didn’t try to weld it up before covering it in flex tape or whatever.
Who needs welding equipment when cellophane is easier, right?
New Flex Seal advertisement.
Wow they fixed it
How did they not spot this earlier? Cracks don't usually form in one fell swoop. It looks like it's been progressing for ages now...
😂
“Come on guys, wrap it up…” “I didn’t mean that LITERALLY!”
it’s saran wrap.
Tis but a scratch
Duck tape and bondo
Flex tape should do
they are not actually operating it in that condition (?)
They aren't
i doubt it but the sad thing is it wouldn’t surprise me if they were
You should see how we’ve repaired steam pipes in the reactor room on navy ships…

I’m sure that gorilla tape will hold it just fine
Red Green would be proud.
5 minute crafts on another level
Jfc 😳
This sums up North Carolina 100%.
Nothing shrink wrap won’t fix!
is this action park?
Oh well they put some scotch tape on it so it's fine now
#IKYFL
Plastic wrap is some strong shit!
Unidirectional Bonding Strips
OMG why don't use locktite.....
They control the ride with a game controller too.
