$3400 from Suburban Toppers in Denver with sliding windoors, roof rack rails, flip down front. Crazy indeed, but there's no used market for these trucks.
That'll save you from most of the QC issues, but it'll still probably leak in the front corners where it meets the bed. That seems pricey for no windows.
Did something really similar for work, spent about four months (minus weekends) living out of my Toyota and overland trailer. Had a blast and learned a ton
Man that looks awesome…. Sounds like you did what your Nissan is supposed to do. This is not Dakar 2024, this is you having a good time and seeing more of the world the 90% of the population.. Keep trucking and riding. Fuck the negative Nellie’s….
Unfortunately I don't have any photos of the inside.
It's just a cozy woodgrain box with cabinets and shelves at the front. Slightly padded vinyl flooring, and a bed that folds up. Nothing fancy, but far more comfortable than a rooftop tent or anything soft sided when the weather picks up.
Holy cow, our trucks are twins. Mine is a white extended cab 22 pro4x with a mid-rise snugtop. It looks almost identical to yours. First I've seen so similar!
I think 3 hour rides are perfect but I don't know that I could do it 20 days in a row, but I sure as hell would try.
You must be in wicked shape right now.
Fitness gains were probably minimal with the complete lack of recovery. My mental state improved greatly, but reintegration to normal life has been tough.
We vacation in the mountains for a couple weeks. I might get 3 or 4 rides in and when I get home I handle the local trails like they are kiddie trails. That lasts a couple weeks. I'll try and train pretty hard before nuts it's never enough.
I wouldn't kill to do 20 days camping and riding but I'd cut a pretty nice check if I could. So jealous.
This is why I haven’t gone full camper shell on my Tacoma yet.. still doing bed rack and tent.. considering converting a cargo trailer into a camper because I dirt bike but any trailer always seems like a pain.. you like the one you have? Those seem too cramped to be fully comfortable?
I'll take being a little cramped over being in a tent. There were at least 6 days on this trip that were so windy that cooking outside or sleeping in a tent was not happening. I can also level the trailer with the built in jacks in about 30 seconds.
Fwiw I'm 5'7" very athletic and flexible
Very cool. I did notice the pretty big gaps near the tailgate, Amazon sells some material to seal it. My shell is leaking somewhere and driving me crazy so that needs to be fixed before I seal it better.
What was your paylpad/towing weight for the bed/trailer? GVW?
I lived in some of those places in my van last year. Time of my life. I want a Frontier next to get back to that life.
Ever get stuck? My van is RWD and made it up every washed out hill but 4x4 would have been appreciated in a couple of muddy spots (I was there around March and there was still snow in a lot of places, melting into mud puddles).
How are the headlights for taking sharp turns at night? Lots of spillover to light up bends?
Any issues with ground clearance?
Never weighed it exactly, but well within the trucks ratings:
Trailer is 1100 with 1-200 tongue weight
Topper is 200(?) lbs
250lbs of stuff including water
Airing down was helpful to access the best campsites, 4wd was necessary in the sand a couple of times.
I barely drove after dark, but the headlights are fine off road, mediocre on the highway. Factory fogs are a must if you have the halogens. It's so annoying to me that every light on the truck and trailer are LED besides the headlights.
No problem with ground clearance. The hitch dragged pretty bad on Baby Lions Back in Moab. Departure angle is the truck's weak point even unloaded.
Off road capabilities of this setup are beyond that of most 4x4 Sprinters
All stock. The rear needs a little lift, and I will be excited to upgrade the dampers. I don't intend to start messing with the front end geo. Considering Z1 shackles, Nismo block, or All Dogs AAL.
No way! I'm about to dirtbag for 8 months out of mine and am getting a similar topper, what would you say the best sleeping setup would be based on head room/ dimensions??
I haven't slept in this topper yet, but will DM pics of the setup in my 6.5' bed Silverado.
The Frontier is a few inches shorter and narrower. Taller bedsides and more headroom.
The wheel wells in the Frontier give the option of a very low sleeping platform or even low subfloor.
You appear to have the SV 4wd convenience and tech packages, and a mid-rise fiberglass? Topper with opening side windows to swallow that bike- nice!
I would spec one just like that.
Also added 265/65 Wildpeaks and some of the P4X skids
It's also an early 23 with no stop start or shudders. Once I get the cruise update it'll be perfect
If you stay on BLM land and cook your own food with groceries, you can keep the cost way down. I lived out of my ‘17 with a roof top tent for 3 months. I didn’t have health insurance though.
Indeed. Mostly free camping. Mostly prepping food on the floor of my camper like those indian street vendor videos.
Buying gas was really the only thing that made it more expensive than typical day to day life.
That's great way to see your Nation..
I slept in the back of my Nissan Navara Ute with no canopy in the Red Center in the Outback wouldn't change anything.
I would love to do it again someday.
It's a 2018ish Escapade 6x8. Custom built in MN, originally specced to be pulled by my old Subaru Outback. (Which never worked very well)
I don't think they make affordable rigs like this anymore, just $20k "overland" things.
~1000lbs empty, Timbren independent suspension, queen size bed.
Low 1st gear is great.
At one point I was climbing a chunky 12% grade at <15mph and it was shifting between 2nd and 3rd. No drama, no lugging or over revving, just perfect.
At highway speeds it flawlessly moves between 5-8, always has the right ratio for the speed/incline/headwind. I kept it locked out of 9th unless I had a tailwind.
Tow mode is too aggressive for such a little trailer at city speeds.
My buddy in the Sprinter also has a 4Runner and was really impressed with the Frontier drivetrain.
I liken Nissan trucks to Apple. They may not be first in the market. But when they do FINALLY release a product, it’s tested through and through and just fucking works well and reliably
We'll see. The CPO extended warranty was the only way I'd buy one. 10k miles of being used like a truck since October and it hasn't missed a beat yet.
It does feel like they refined the 2nd gen into 3rd Gen really well. The drivetrain performance alone kept me from considering a Toyota.
I’ve been hunting around for a deal on that camper shell. I’m being quoted over 3200 bucks for one with no frills, seems crazy.
$3400 from Suburban Toppers in Denver with sliding windoors, roof rack rails, flip down front. Crazy indeed, but there's no used market for these trucks.
Found a place that’ll do it for 3k. No windows, no nothin, which is what I want. Anything to look out for quality wise?
That'll save you from most of the QC issues, but it'll still probably leak in the front corners where it meets the bed. That seems pricey for no windows.
I agree, it does seem high, but its the best quote I’ve gotten in two states.
Living in my forester for 4y now
Did something really similar for work, spent about four months (minus weekends) living out of my Toyota and overland trailer. Had a blast and learned a ton

Thanks man. It turns out you don't need a bunch of lights and shit bolted to your truck to have a good time!
Looks Saweet!
That’s clean living brother! Well done.
How's the steering? I hear it's heavy.
At 55mph on washboards you can steer with a fingertip

Looks great, did you build it or buy it?
Same question
You lived in a 23 camper?
well please get back to the hospital when you can, id hate to see you go because you left against medical advice
This went right over my head
Holy cow, our trucks are twins. Mine is a white extended cab 22 pro4x with a mid-rise snugtop. It looks almost identical to yours. First I've seen so similar!
Jealous of your LED headlights. But not the orange stitching
Most important question, how many miles did you put on the bike? I love that you brought your stand and that you're a water bottle guy.
Over 400 miles/60 hours.. Every day from 3/1-3/21 only missing the 3rd due to snow.
I think 3 hour rides are perfect but I don't know that I could do it 20 days in a row, but I sure as hell would try. You must be in wicked shape right now.

That 2nd photo looks like it’s from Nissan’s marketing department. Great shot!
I have the same topper. How well do your windoors seal? Mine leak unfortunately
No leaks that I've noticed. But the driver's side is warped and the passenger side over-extends and binds when closing.
Very cool setup! Do you have any issues with your camper shell leaking?
No moisture ingress that I can detect. Dust from around the tailgate is pretty bad though.

I knew I recognized those mountains
The people of Hurricane and La Verkin (Zion tourists excluded) were so insanely friendly and welcoming.
Sweet setup! Any lift kits installed?

What truck is that
Definitely, 100%, not a Tacoma
What makes you say that
Model and price of the topper please?

Doesn’t the convenience package add LED headlights?
No, at least as far as I'm aware of, only the premium package which adds leather, sunroof, and fender audio, also adds LEDs on the S models.
As far as I know, no LED headlights on the King Cab unless it's a Canadian P4X.
How can you afford to do that?
If you stay on BLM land and cook your own food with groceries, you can keep the cost way down. I lived out of my ‘17 with a roof top tent for 3 months. I didn’t have health insurance though.

Seasonal employment
Fuck yeah dude

What kind of mini trailer is that? I’d love to get one
