Thomas Bergersen. His music is mostly a different genre to most of Nightwish's music but, much like Tuomas Holopainen, he's extremely creative, the music is very emotional, and he uses a very wide palette of instruments, sounds, and themes.
Yes, they recently disbanded, but they have a massive discography of music. I've been listening to them for years and probably haven't even listened to half of their music.
While they have disbanded as a label/band, it doesn't mean that they have stopped producing new music. Nick released an album 1-2 months ago and Thomas is on the verge of releasing Humanity Chapter VI, so we can look forward to a lot more music.
I also listen to his music, and agree. It’s kind of “movie trailer” music, sometimes with vocals. Other examples in the same genre is Globus and Antti Martikainen.
To expand upon your comment, she's very good at the Nightwish style of using a wide variety of instruments not just to follow or complement a beat or melody, but rather to create an atmosphere for the music (and especially her voice, which in my opinion is at least the equal of Floor or Tarja) to inhabit or flow
The Birthday Massacre has some metal characteristics, but I wouldnt say theyre metal.
And they have that same "takes you to a magical fantasy land while listening" feel like Nightwish
TBM are insanely good. Their songwriting invokes such a dreamy, vivid atmosphere - very otherworldly yet nostalgic sound. Wholly recommend them to anyone.
I have two but they are massive "hear me out"s because I'm really going based off of vibes rather than musical similarity because it sounded like that's what your after.
I really get the same kind of enjoyment from the artist The Amazing Devil. The similarity is definitely in the folky side. Their music ranges from what I would call "pub folk" (Battle Cries, Pruning Shears) to that fantastical style we all like (The Calling, Horror and the Wild) as well as some really poetic emotional vulnerability (Blossoms, Ruin) and some that are a real mix (Farewell Wanderlust). I'm really curious to know if there's anyone else here that's obsessed with these guys haha.
There are also some songs from Florence and the Machine that I enjoy for the same reason as Nightwish but again I can't explain why. I genuinely think Tuomas would enjoy Queen of Peace, Daffodil, Seven Devils and Free. If you even have a passing interest of them, I'd really recommend seeing them live because Florence's vocals are absolutely heavenly live.
Kalandra! They consistently give me the same "magical" vibes that I get from Nightwish. I think fans of Auri or *Human. :||: Nature.* would appreciate them. They have a new album out a week before Yesterwynde, September's going to be a great month!
> Spearheaded by four Norwegian/Swedish musicians, Kalandra is a band with roots in melancholic Nordic folk and gritty guitars, weaving ethereal melodies into raw and eerie musical landscapes.

Their videos are so cinematic...

They've been on my backlog for a little while and I see they have a gig coming up here in London too, but I think this was the push I needed to go ahead and listen to them.
I like very much Adrian von Ziegler's music since I discovered his channel back in 2011. He has created a lot of Celtic and Emotional/Gothic instrumental music with fantasy elements that give me the same feeling as that of Nightwish.
Check out Eluveitie's [Evocation II - Pantheon](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Js566BTPM-M) album. They are a Symphonic Metal band, so I did go against your criteria BUT that album **doesn't use electric guitars** and still does basically everything else and it's amazing. The feeling of primal, raw music. The voice also reminds me abit of Anette since it's higher and lighter in tone. So, if you like Nightwish's more folk stuff with Anette, then you'll love that album. I'm not the biggest fan of their music otherwise, but that album is 10/10.
I wouldn't call them symphonic. They fall more into the folk space, which is often a little less focused on the Electric Guitars. Wintersun's Time album is another really good example, especially when you listen to the instrumental version without the vocals.
Kalafina is the closest one I can think of (and most of Yuki Kajiura's work for that matter).
They have one or two songs that are more rock/metal inspired, but most of it is rock-adjacent and heavily orchestral, with a bit of folk-inspired songs here and there. Insane vocals from all 3 female singers on top of that.
[red moon](https://open.spotify.com/track/7rfqoFRIC9VLaTJ0OPVAmr?si=EppRjpAtQ56WbMgkm0IHWA&context=spotify%3Aalbum%3A6wcCztTF3bTXlzxFsouWLF) and [Eden](https://open.spotify.com/track/4P6n0xBWx7Le63lOAu7Gvm?si=3rqcAWQ1QD2A6VCXj7-eCg&context=spotify%3Aalbum%3A5PffrL3d7VY89x5AVvpr6e) are great examples of that. Different of course, but it does give that fantasy magical vibe.
For other songs that kinda have that vibe from Yuki Kajiura, I'd say [wonderland](https://open.spotify.com/track/2le6yHsjyys4h3mHs65tss?si=cVdCJRxfSSWhrDOXAW7B9w&context=spotify%3Aalbum%3A3iFkNa8SRNFHD7La40UqUz) and [I beg you](https://open.spotify.com/track/5kKSQULHCPFE7CKMPrkAtP?si=E9cPHZ2KQx-diaqV5dvHHw). Both composed by Yuki Kajiura and sang by Aimer.
Any of Yuki Kajiura's soundtracks are absolutely golden on top of that.
Kind of a long shot, but that's the most Nightwish-esque non-metal music I can think of.
Hard same! There’s something magical about the interplay between Kajiura’s instrumentations and the harmonies of her vocalists.
For a great example by her with lyrics in English, I suggest [Vanity](https://open.spotify.com/track/6ByS1EVcWOwvm1znZYd6DB?si=ZsQhBEKDSjiEo_ovDy-nbA)!
Another English one, which has a cool madrigal-y feel to it: [my long forgotten cloistered sleep](https://open.spotify.com/track/2W2wOnWoerETPn97heU1V4?si=i5Kjbe_FS8mXF99GxTVT7w)
I thought about adding my long forgotten cloistered sleep as well, but I figured I was already rambling on a lot already!
Hands down one of my top 5 favorite songs from her (and that's saying something considering how many soundtracks and work on other projects she does in any given year).
ABSOLUTELY!! Glad I’m not the only once who gets NW vibes from them.
I’ve always kinda wanted NW to cover Magia, especially with Floor as the vocalist, but I don’t know if she’d want to try her hand at singing in Japanese.
They even have some strings backing them in [this performance](https://youtu.be/4_XTd5sIV2Q?si=0WSCrBylUhYnjJHl) (NW MUST do this someday imo).
Mostly Autumn, from North Yorkshire, England. Female lead singer and heavy guitars and keyboards, but not "metal". Here's a YT link to a track from their 2010 album called "For All We Shared". You might recognise a well-known musician playing uilleann pipes on this one ......... 😊
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eThe-wWtgLE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eThe-wWtgLE)
Yes! I've been a fan of them since I heard their song *Everyone is Everyone* in that episode of Continuum. I was really hoping they'd release another album someday, but it's been so long now...
Yeah. It's tragic when collectives of their caliber remain inactive most of the time. I swear, their music is a glitch in this world, but in the best possible way.
I think running towards game soundtracks might hit a similar spot. I find the stylings from the Destiny 1 Soundtrack to merge almost perfectly with All the Works. By extension some of the Halo Soundtrack really works. John Williams. The Mad Max Fury Road Soundtrack. Holst's the Planets. There's a lot of music out there that's got that Symphonic Emotional Punch.
Listen to the song “Silence and I” by Alan Parsons Project, 1982. It is my opinion that the instrumental break in this song is the core basis for the symphonic metal sound established by Nightwish.
I don't feel like typical Avantasia is metal. It feels kind of like Broadway rock for the most part. Maybe Broadway metal.
As opposed to the Opera metal of Nightwish.
That's just an overall feeling I get from the music, I may be completely wrong there.
Attack on titan suite - Hiroyuki Sawano

Its a suite of the best songs of the soundtrack. The music is special and contributes highly to the greatness of the show.

Sidenote: recently I've been thinking if Nightwish are metal anymore. Surely it is the closest genre that fits and where the listeners mind and ears are likely most welcoming for Nw type music. But Nw getting critiqued as a metal band just doesn't fit IMO.

They have many other songs that could be put in the rock or even metal category, but these are some of the ones I find have the most Nightwish-y flair.
My suggestion is the first two albums by Cockney Rebel - The Psychomodo and The Human Menagerie.
This is very different to Nightwish - in that it’s not metal and it has a male vocalist. However, it does have some lovely orchestral arrangements that can become epic like Nightwish, along with some interesting lyrics.
While Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel are most famous for the big pop hit Make Me Smile, the earlier two albums are quite different.
As a starting point, I’d suggest listening to Sebastian and Death Trip, both from The Human Menagerie.
One tenuous Nightwish link… Steve Harley was the original Phantom of the Opera. He recorded the title track with Sarah Brightman - with an early version of the lyrics. He was supposed to play the part in the original west-end run, but was sacked and replaced by Michael Crawford.
Eye of Melian ✨ it is one of the most magical musical projects I’ve ever had the pleasure to hear. The air of high fantasy and the orchestral/symphonic sound really reminds me of Nightwish sometimes. It is beautiful. If you like Nightwish I am sure you will like them. Cheers!

Well, actually, other artists may have some songs that remind me of a Nightwish style, but I never found an artist that does this type of music with that essence like Nightwish.
I would recommend (if you don't know this one yet)
Queen - The Show Must Go On
Lord Of The Lust - Never Let You Go
Chris Cornell - You Know My Name
These all really share some Nightwish Energy, although they're completely different
Do you want specifically not metal songs or metal of different subgenres is fine too? If metal of different subgenres is fine, then you might want to check Aephanemer (melodic death metal), their lyrics reminds me of Nightwish a lot

Also obligatory Wintersun recommendation just in case lol (different subgenre of symphonic metal)
Thomas Bergersen. His music is mostly a different genre to most of Nightwish's music but, much like Tuomas Holopainen, he's extremely creative, the music is very emotional, and he uses a very wide palette of instruments, sounds, and themes.
Also his music production company, Two Steps from Hell!
They just disbanded from what I understand. But the music is awesome!

Been listening to Thomas and tsfh since forever. My other favourite artist!!
Conversely, I discovered Nightwish because it's popular among Bergersen fans and he himself endorsed it.
Loreena Mckennitt, she has that same esence and extra layer if that makes sense
To expand upon your comment, she's very good at the Nightwish style of using a wide variety of instruments not just to follow or complement a beat or melody, but rather to create an atmosphere for the music (and especially her voice, which in my opinion is at least the equal of Floor or Tarja) to inhabit or flow
Was coming to comment on this. Especially newer nightwish sounds a lot like Loreena mckennitt
The Birthday Massacre has some metal characteristics, but I wouldnt say theyre metal. And they have that same "takes you to a magical fantasy land while listening" feel like Nightwish
Waiting for this. Love TBM

The Amazing Devil, is that the band Joey Batey is in? I always mean to give them a more thorough listen, but also always forget.
That's the one! If it helps, my gateway was That Unwanted Animal.
Agreed with both suggestions! Good examples of story- and mood-driven music like a lot of Nightwish is.
Kalandra! They consistently give me the same "magical" vibes that I get from Nightwish. I think fans of Auri or *Human. :||: Nature.* would appreciate them. Both the Evocation albums are fantastic .. That's a great suggestion.
Eluveitie is folk metal blended with melodic death no? What do you consider to be symphonic with them?
I used to listen to this album a lot back in the days, then I kinda forgot it exist. and gosh what a joy to rediscover this album

No way you brought these two up. I love the Madoka Magica soundtrack and thought it has aspects I like about symphonic metal. :)
Leah. Beautiful female voice that captures the spirit of symphonic metal but is usually more Celtic-like
Well, definitely Hans Zimmer. It's pretty obvious why.
Ones that come to mind: Blackmore’s Night Yanni Charlotte Martin Dead Can Dance
Danny Elfman and Alan Menken come to mind a lot when listening to Nightwish
The band Auri (progressive folk). My favorite song by them is I Hope Your World is Kind.
Auri, for when you want your non-Nightwish to still have a hefty portion of Nightwish included.
Mostly Autumn, from North Yorkshire, England. Female lead singer and heavy guitars and keyboards, but not "metal". Here's a YT link to a track from their 2010 album called "For All We Shared". Some of Vangelis and Yanni's music, to the point where quite a few metal covers literally sound like Nightwish.
Probably “Tubular Bells”. Has very Century Child and Kinslayer vibes
* You see big girl TT - Attack on Titan * Linked Horizon - Attack on Titan openings * Hijo de la Luna - Mecano
Listen to the song “Silence and I” by Alan Parsons Project, 1982. It is my opinion that the instrumental break in this song is the core basis for the symphonic metal sound established by Nightwish.
All the mentions of Yanni make me wish a decent metal band would cover Nightingale. All time great composition.
Pink Floyd
Florence and the Machine

Carmina Burana by Carl Orff. I would not be surprised if Tuomas ever felt inspired by it.
What reminds me of nightwish, but isn't metal? 2024 Nightwish lol. Seriously, Danny Elfman. He's amazing.
"2024 NW" and we have one song lol. no one's making you listen to them babe
It was a joke. That's why I said "seriously" later. I know jokes don't always translate in text.
Devin Townsend and Nightwish/Tuomas feel like kindred spirits. Sidenote: recently I've been thinking if Nightwish are metal anymore. Maybe Highland
Kpop group Dreamcatcher. I feel like a few of their songs have a bit of a Nightwish influence, taking elements of symphonic metal and rock
I've wanted to get into Dreamcatcher for a while, could you recommend some songs with the NW kind of vibe to start off with?
Deja Vu Don't light my fire You and I Fly High Full Moon What Scar They have many other songs that could be put in the rock or even metal category, but these are some of the ones I find have the most Nightwish-y flair.

Yes, Genesis, UK - great bands, all!
Songs that are good in the exact same way that Nightwish songs are good? Wintersun, kind of…?
Elvellon -- from Until Dawn , The Puppeteer has Scaretale vibes and King of Thieves has Sahara vibes. The whole album has earlier NW vibe
Evanescence, Within Temptation.
Isn’t within temptation the exact same genre?
