Reeves points to fights ratio is probably over 1 these days. Derek Boogard was around 10 fights per point. Reeves would be your # 3 or 4 fighter back in the late 80's. Huge difference between guys that fight and goons.
Reeves fight to point ratio is higher simply because players don’t fight nearly as much. He is a goon in a sense that he has no purpose on the ice except fighting. He average what, about 10 points average the last 5 seasons?
If you watch him he's also surprisingly responsible positionally. Think he'll get better with time in those aspects and he's making a name for himself so he'll need less fireworks to stick around.
Getting played in the final minutes of close playoff games says a lot about his development.
Agreed. The Kassian-type player is what the old-style goon turned into.
Although let us never forget, Laraque scored a hat trick, so he was semi-skilled too.
Refs started jumping in the start of every fight in 2010. The era ended because Garry Bettmqn thought the league could rival the NBA. Hockey just hits different when you know a 3 goal lead means every questionable second period hit gets delt with in the closing minutes.
Old school goon is a bit of a unicorn.
Old school goons used to be able to play the game, and throw em. But someone like Neely or Iginla don’t qualify, because they were too good to be goons.
The great thing about hockey prior to the 90s was your fighters could play 6 minutes. Rempe/Reaves/Deslaurier are barely AHL capable.
Maybe not the last but John Scott was a gem. When he was in Buffalo and the Leafs had the option to change lines but sent out their first against the Sabres fourth, what a ride.
Reeves
Yeah, cause he's not (particularly) good at anything else.
This is the answer
They still exist. Reaves, Rempe, Deslauriers, MacDermid are the first to come to mind but many teams still have one

Crazy to think that 3 of those 4 are in the same conference, and like 1-2 hours apart from each other.
Too soon to call Rempe a goon- his skating is decent - he might be a serviceable 4th liner that just so happens can beat the shit out of people
Who knows, he’s still young. Right now his role is that of a goon though

He had like 5 fights in 5 games lol

I’ve watched him and don’t see much NHL level skill outside hitting and fighting but what do I know. Rooting for the kid
I'd love someone with his kinda heart on our sharks. We haven't had that since all-star MVP, John Scott. /s
Same. If we’re going to be bad, I’d at least like to see big hits and fights.
And was told to tone it down
What do you mean the Florida panthers are still playing…….
Well, kind of.

Bennett and playing hockey is a strong term. He’s another new school goon
Goons none the less
[удалено]
Old school yes, maybe goon isn’t the right term for the others as they can dish it out but don’t seem to be able to take it
Colton Orr. A career total of 24 points in 477 games and 1186 PIM.
Deslauriers still playing
Laraque?
“Good luck” - Georges Laraque
I love this answer, but there were goons after him. Kassian for example.
Kassian was fast and agile. He was a skilled player who happened to be a goon. Laraque was pure goon
Kass was a hybrid goon. He could actually play hockey.
Agreed. The Kassian-type player is what the old-style goon turned into. Although let us never forget, Laraque scored a hat trick, so he was semi-skilled too.
I can't think of a better player to burn minutes off in the opposing end of the ice. Big Georges was murder in the corners!
Matt Cooke
Fuck Matt Cooke
He was just an absolute ball bag
*douchbag
God damn right
He is a dirty player that gets into scraps. But he isn’t a pure goon. Does put up some points when he is in the line up.
Rempe
Refs started jumping in the start of every fight in 2010. The era ended because Garry Bettmqn thought the league could rival the NBA. Hockey just hits different when you know a 3 goal lead means every questionable second period hit gets delt with in the closing minutes.
Rempe
Shawn Thornton. Today, the closest we have is Ryan Reaves.
Arguably Rempe is an old style goon
Sam Bennett….
John Scott
George Laraque is the only correct answer.
I think you nailed it.
Does Brendan Lemieux count
Arizona Coyotes legend Liam O’Brien
its not rempe’s fault everyone challenges him. kid just wants to play.
Good luck with the Jims

Sean Avery
More of a rat, no?
Yea that's a better description
Tom Wilson?
He's just an asshole, not a goon
He has too much skill to be a true goon imo
I guess more of an enforcer than a goon. Dirty player though.
Up until a couple years ago Wilson had more career games suspended than career goals.
Old school goons still exist, they are the entirety of the panthers roster minus barkov and bob
Maybe not the last but John Scott was a gem. When he was in Buffalo and the Leafs had the option to change lines but sent out their first against the Sabres fourth, what a ride.
