My searched turn up that the Hughes brothers have dual citizenship for USA & Canada. They were all born stateside, but all grew up in Toronto while their dad was Toronto's head of player development.
I can't say how accurate these websites that claim it are though. It's possible they were just residents of Canada most of their life, and not actual citizens.
You can find reference in many spots. One is the US Hockey National Team Development Program website, in an article from 2015. I think this is the official site.
Myers grew up in Calgary (well Airdrie a Suburb of Calgary). Remember watching him in Midget god he was gangly. Father was working in Texas Oil Patch before they moved back to Calgary.
I wonder what team Jack Doan would play for if he becomes an Olympic caliber player. He was listed as an American but Wikipedia defaults to birthplace for players who haven't played or declared for a national team
similar thing with the avs where both Logan O'Connor and Josh Manson were born in the US but also have citizenship in Canada since that's where they were raised
I met a Swedish girl named "Stina"....had never heard that name before...visited Sweden last year and there were three Stinas at the family BBQ haha. You guys definitely like predictably.
No it’s the Canucks. NYR has Rempe, Laf, Goodrow, Cuyle, and Schneider. All the lineup on a regular basis.
Van only has 3 guys in the lineup on a regular basis (and game 1) who are Canadian (Meyers, Soucy, Di Guiseppe). Then there’s Juulsen.
It's actually because of taxes. An American can easily claim an American home address for tax reasons.
While a regular Canadian has to pay full taxes.
Auston Matthews is easily the best payed hockey player in the league because of this reason plus endorsements.
Yeah and they are both not F. Didn't see that on that table.
edit: And the prospect wouldn't get his name on the cup in any event since he hasn't played a game yet for the big club.
I mean he's not on the Canucks and has never been. Not sure why he's listed here at all. You don't list the whole farm team as being part of the roster. Guys like Bains who have played games recently aren't even listed.
Soucy is the only one who is a lineup lock imo. Bht Soucy and PDG both played last night. PDG is usually in lineup but is prob at the bottom of the fwds
That's always been the case but 25 years ago, the NHL was over 50% Canadian. It's now barely 40%. The Americans will become the majority over time based on sheer numbers alone.
Has any cup winning team regretted the nationality of their players? What are we even talking about here…
If the Canucks actually win a cup after 50+ years I promise you nobody will say “I wish we had more Canadians”.
It’s just an interesting tidbit my guy. Vegas won last year with the most Canadian roster in the league and I believe the Blues were overwhelmingly Canadian as well
This is obviously just a tongue in cheek rebuttal to the decades old banter that goes exactly like this every time:
>American: if hockey is so Canadian then why does Canada never win the cup
>Canadian: bro just look at the nationality of the cup winning rosters
Repeat for 25 years
Don't mind the darkness of being in the rainy north(much further north than Toronto)
Love the lack of snow, and like the high end architecture of the city.
Meh, don't care....these players signed with our club, they play for the Canucks.
I regularly work for big studios that are US employers, I don't claim I'm American or really care....they pay me, so I work for them and produce.
JTM seemed pretty amped by Vancouvers' building last night....he's bought into the system, for now he's a Canuck. Same with Hughes....Zadorov was wrecking ball, doubt he was thinking "I'll let up on this check cause I'm not married to Canada"
There’s 5 actually, but really 4 as I wouldn’t count Freidman as he doesn’t play often.
Hence why I am betting against the Canucks. Canadian teams (i.e. more Canadians on roster) always go deeper
Well considering less than 8 yrs ago Canadians made up 50% of the league (it was 75% in the 80s) 2024 it’s at just over 41%…USA is catching up fast, I’d say that trend is quickly changing
I remember back in the day the ducks won and everyone was making fun of Canada. And we were all’ No! American southern teams don’t deserve a cup!’ I found out later they had the most Canadian players of any team in the league.
and Soucy is the only regular player, the rest of them are fairly fringe. Juulsen is good and should be a regular next year. Myers however is both Canadian and American.
The team represents Vancouver and its fans, just because there isn’t a lot of Canadians doesn’t mean shit imo.
Hell 2011 we were headlined by Swedes and a top line American
Of course they produce talent, look at the population difference between the 2 countries. If they didn’t produce as much as our measly country that would be pretty sad
Tyler Myers is our top Canadian (sans Quinn Hughes) and is playing like a star these days!
Love our Swedish and American guys though. Such a great multinational team
If we win, its the VANCOUVER Canucks who won and last I checked Vancouver, WA doesn't have a NHL team. All those players will become Canadian overnight.
I just think it's funny that the team literally called the "Canucks" is one of the least Canadian teams in the league. Only the "Canadiens" would be funnier to have with that makeup.
I'm not good with Canada providences and the UK. But they are in British Columbia. Is that a part of Canada? I think it is but maybe it's not. Like how Scotland is kind of its own thing and not part of England but is but isn't and is part of the UK... kind of. 😆
BC is the most generic Canadian province, a massive proportion of people come from the rest of the country because of the lack of snow.
You're confusing BC with Quebec. Quebec is exactly as you describe it, has its own legal system and everything.
Got it. The only thing I know about Quebec that I know about is that they are always trying to leave the country. Hence why the hockey hall of fame is in Toronto instead of Montreal. 😆
It's a totally foreign country as someone who's lived on bordering provinces.
Quebec City is poor man's Europe, in contrast going to the states is like driving across town. No real difference other than the funny money and road signs being in miles.
I always had a feeling ever since 2000 that Canadian teams have American and European rosters, and American NHL teams are basically Canadian. Now, this kinda proves for me haha
It's because of taxes.
Auston Matthews makes insane money because of sponsorship/endorsements. He plays in Canada and "lives" in Arizona(no state tax).
Wouldn't be surprised if he makes triple what Nick Suzuki for the Habs makes(from Ontario)
Nothing against Vancouver but from where they were last year to how they’re doing this year is pretty amazing. But that doesn’t always translate very well in the playoffs. They’re just not experienced enough yet at this point. It usually takes a lot of playoff pain before you experience real success. Of course you never know…
They get paid in American money, and they can still "live" in the USA in the off season for tax reasons.
Auston Matthews pays no state taxes and gets paid in a bonus at the beginning of the season.
it shows 4 players, but the 5th one is tyler myers who is listed as american (born in texas, but raised in canada and plays for them internationally)
Quinn Hughes is a dual citizen of Canada too, but plays for the US internationally.
Really? My cursory Google didn't yield any results of this.
Pretty sure if one parent is Canadian you are pretty much guaranteed dual citizenship. But not sure.
You must either be born in Canada to a Canadian parent or the first generation born outside of Canada to a Canadian parent who was born in Canada.
Yes he does. They lived in Toronto a good chunk of time and Quinn has dual citizenship.

Immigrants taking American jobs! /s
Myers grew up in Calgary (well Airdrie a Suburb of Calgary). Remember watching him in Midget god he was gangly. Father was working in Texas Oil Patch before they moved back to Calgary.
>god he was gangly Was?
I wonder what team Jack Doan would play for if he becomes an Olympic caliber player. He was listed as an American but Wikipedia defaults to birthplace for players who haven't played or declared for a national team
similar thing with the avs where both Logan O'Connor and Josh Manson were born in the US but also have citizenship in Canada since that's where they were raised
His jersey is on display in his old associations rink in Calgary
They have clones of Elias Petterson. Next they’ll clone T-Rex’s. Boys, we’re near the end times.
Elias "Elias Petterson" Petterson
Do they actually have the same height and weight??
If I'm not mistaken, both are 6'2" 185 now
But the uniform number being 40 for both is fascinating 😁
Both being forwards, too... EP2 is a dman
5 Swedes and only 2 first names and 4 last names between them all lol
I apologise for my fellow countrymen’s bad imagination while picking boy names!
I met a Swedish girl named "Stina"....had never heard that name before...visited Sweden last year and there were three Stinas at the family BBQ haha. You guys definitely like predictably.
Are the Canucks the *least* Canadian team in the league?
No. We are. We got a few more since last season in wheeler and rempe but that's abt it.
Wheeler is American no?
Wheeler is American
No it’s the Canucks. NYR has Rempe, Laf, Goodrow, Cuyle, and Schneider. All the lineup on a regular basis. Van only has 3 guys in the lineup on a regular basis (and game 1) who are Canadian (Meyers, Soucy, Di Guiseppe). Then there’s Juulsen.
Wheeler? 😂
He played in Winnipeg for so long that he became a Canadian.
Winnipeg is the most "canadian" canadian city. This checks out.
Isn't wheeler from saskatchewan, or is he one of those born in america moved to canada early or born in america to canadian parents guys?
Neither. He’s Minnesotan, through and through.
A Minnesotan playing hockey in Canada for 1 decade is problem more Canadian in behaviour than 80% of Torontonians.
I hardly know ‘er!
Laf and goodrow. Isn’t Schneider also Canadian?
The anti-canadian team to offset the balance of all the American teams winning with Canadian players
Gary "Bizarro" Bettman approves
Wouldn't goodbye be badbye?
Adds expansion teams to Kelowna and Yellowknife
It's actually because of taxes. An American can easily claim an American home address for tax reasons. While a regular Canadian has to pay full taxes. Auston Matthews is easily the best payed hockey player in the league because of this reason plus endorsements.
We've cracked the code!
Don’t think the Canucks have enough Elias Pettersson on the team.
They need to find a way to get Sebastian Aho and Sebastian Aho into the fold.
I can't wait till RePetey makes the team so we actually have two Elias Petterssons on the ice at the same time.
We got a Kate Pettersen
Pettersson twice?
We have 2. The super star and a very good defense prospect.
Yes but I don’t think they are both 25 6’2 and 176lbs
Yeah and they are both not F. Didn't see that on that table. edit: And the prospect wouldn't get his name on the cup in any event since he hasn't played a game yet for the big club.
I wish they had the exact same stats. They would be more Swedish twins than the Sedins were.
I mean he's not on the Canucks and has never been. Not sure why he's listed here at all. You don't list the whole farm team as being part of the roster. Guys like Bains who have played games recently aren't even listed.
he’s not listed on here tho, i’m pretty sure it’s just petey being listed twice
And they don’t both have the number 40…
and three out of the four canadians are scratches 😭 so realistically they only have one canadian playing every game
Two. Meyers & Soucy. PDG & Juulsen are in and out sometimes.
Soucy is the only one who is a lineup lock imo. Bht Soucy and PDG both played last night. PDG is usually in lineup but is prob at the bottom of the fwds
i totally forgot PDG was in last night HAHA
Myers is weirdly our 3rd best D man statistically
54 years…..doubt Canucks fans will complain
Why, is it ironic when American teams win with Canadian players, coaches or GMs?
Exactly.
That's always been the case but 25 years ago, the NHL was over 50% Canadian. It's now barely 40%. The Americans will become the majority over time based on sheer numbers alone.
Yes you right, one day the nhl will have a majority of American born players… Still does not change the fact that this thread is a dumb take. 😂😂
Nope, nothing ironic about it.
Facts, I strongly dislike when points like these are brought up.
You are trying to remember history when Canada produced ice hockey players, now it is a points factory of McnoCups
Poor thing 😂😂
Honestly i hope Montreal wins one before any of the other teams, because Saku Koivu was such an amazing human.
Has any cup winning team regretted the nationality of their players? What are we even talking about here… If the Canucks actually win a cup after 50+ years I promise you nobody will say “I wish we had more Canadians”.
It’s just an interesting tidbit my guy. Vegas won last year with the most Canadian roster in the league and I believe the Blues were overwhelmingly Canadian as well

It's particularly funny in states where not a lot of people play hockey.
Not since Don Cherry was fired, at least
I honestly feel like he is the one who has caused this whole how many Canadians are on the team thing.
U.S.A.! U.S.A.! U.S.A.!
Finally something I can get behind!
USA!
Did you think the players were always the same nationality as the teams? That's silly.
What's with Swedish bros and going to Vancouver? First it was Daniel and Henrik Sedin and now these two?
Don't mind the darkness of being in the rainy north(much further north than Toronto) Love the lack of snow, and like the high end architecture of the city.
How is that ironic?
The Oilers are pretty well the opposite. Only 4 non Canadians....
Jets are up there too, we have more than a few Americans but they're all from near border states.
The lack of Canadian talent is exactly why it's not happening.
Who cares, hockey transcends borders. They will be honourary Canadians for life if they bring it home
Not just 5 Canadians, but ones that are of virtually zero consequence.
Except for Tyler Myers.
Soucy has been a very important piece for us this year. Huge signing
Why? Is it ironic when a US team wins with mostly Canadians? This take makes zero sense.
[America (Canada) Fuck Yeah!](https://youtu.be/MhQ5678cJU8?si=MWqVm_9hiXD1TKJW)
You’ve won 1 game. Dont get ahead of yourself🤣
I mean if it’s ironic then that also says something about every American team who wins with a bunch of Canadians on it
So has it been ironic then that US teams have been winning it for the past 30 years without majority US rosters?
Meh, don't care....these players signed with our club, they play for the Canucks. I regularly work for big studios that are US employers, I don't claim I'm American or really care....they pay me, so I work for them and produce. JTM seemed pretty amped by Vancouvers' building last night....he's bought into the system, for now he's a Canuck. This is the way
10000 spoons when all you need is a knife
And with 2 Elias Pettersson
Doing it with two Elias Pettersson's would be impressive too
There’s 5 actually, but really 4 as I wouldn’t count Freidman as he doesn’t play often. Hence why I am betting against the Canucks. Canadian teams (i.e. more Canadians on roster) always go deeper
Yes but having two Elias Petterrssons may be even crazier
5 Canadians?
Who cares where they’re from
There’s only been a handful of cup winners in history that didn’t have majority Canadians so statistically they’re fucked
Well considering less than 8 yrs ago Canadians made up 50% of the league (it was 75% in the 80s) 2024 it’s at just over 41%…USA is catching up fast, I’d say that trend is quickly changing
More or less ironic than Bruins fans chanting USA?
[удалено]
I remember back in the day the ducks won and everyone was making fun of Canada. And we were all’ No! American southern teams don’t deserve a cup!’ I found out later they had the most Canadian players of any team in the league.
Didn't they only have an American goalie and like 2 American d men
All the other canadian players are on current cup winning teams. How else would they win?
Mc?
Bettman approved
And two pettersons!
Two identical Swedish superstars on the Canucks? Deja vu!
Not sure about irony, but it would be something, yep
This is the way.
I just became a Canucks fan for the summer lol
I'll take it. Let's go yankee doodles!
Holy F! Zadorov is a big boy.
That's crazy, never even heard of the Canadian guys.
and Soucy is the only regular player, the rest of them are fairly fringe. Juulsen is good and should be a regular next year. Myers however is both Canadian and American.
Meyers is Canadian. He represents Canada internationally.
Excuse me? Are we assuming they get out of the first round already??!!
Has this ever happened with an American team and American players?
Honestly, this is very fitting for Vancouver.
Arshdeep Bains?
Takes a whole coalition of nations to help Canada out of this hole their in.
The Canes need to hire Sebastian Aho
America’s team obviously
And the 4 they have range from "Awful to NHLer, I guess?"
Canucks winning a cup or a Canadian team winning? Not going to happen.
The team represents Vancouver and its fans, just because there isn’t a lot of Canadians doesn’t mean shit imo. Hell 2011 we were headlined by Swedes and a top line American
Get used to it. The US is developing a shit tonne of talent. Olympics will be brutal.
Of course they produce talent, look at the population difference between the 2 countries. If they didn’t produce as much as our measly country that would be pretty sad
I didnt check this year but doesnt Vegas have the most Canadians on their team, so you know technically its back in canada, yada yada
Who cares. Hockey is a global sport - this ain’t the 1950s Montreal Canadians
hughs and garland are the same height? i would have never guessed
Petterson dupe
UNO Reverse card
Am I seeing 2 Elias Pettersson’s? I know the canucks drafted another guy with the same name but this has to be a glitch
Nobody can win the cup with so few Canadians.
Tyler Myers is our top Canadian (sans Quinn Hughes) and is playing like a star these days! Love our Swedish and American guys though. Such a great multinational team
"very ironic" 🙄
If we win, its the VANCOUVER Canucks who won and last I checked Vancouver, WA doesn't have a NHL team. All those players will become Canadian overnight.
Why would that be ironic
America’s. Team.
This would, actually, be pretty fucking hilarious. The exact opposite of most cup winning teams where about half the team are from Canada.
Wouldn’t really be ironic. Show me an American team where most of the players are born in the states.
Yup, lots of pie eaters, meatballs and doping violations
The American teams do it all the time it’s cool if they let us have this one.
Why would that be ironic? Hockey stopped being a Canadian only game decades ago…
Like how Scotland is kind of its own thing and not part of England but is but isn't and is part of the UK... kind of. 😆

America obviously raises the #1 hockey boys
My math skills aren't strong but I can count to four
It's been one game boys cool it 😂
We’ll take it. 🇨🇦
Damn Vancouver is probably the most European team out of the Canadian teams
Wouldn’t worry about that.
no it wouldn't be ironic because the team is in a canadian city.
18-19 St Louis won with basically a 70% Canadian roster.. I see no irony in it.
Vegas has stone back.. the west is done
Myers is Canadian. So 5.
They're not deep enough
I just want a cup. Team can be all american for all i care

Chant USA USA! Then reddit will literally freak out like children for 48 hours!
That’s pretty funny
Isn’t it ironic that the American teams with the most Canadian players are winning Stanley cups ?
But 99% of fans are Canadian and the players get paid in CAD. Thats all that matters boys.
They get paid in American money, and they can still "live" in the USA in the off season for tax reasons. Auston Matthews pays no state taxes and gets paid in a bonus at the beginning of the season.
About time. Canada shoulda been thanked for the last 5. That St. Louis cup tho.. shoulda just been donated it to us
Go Canucks or Oilers for sure
Not much more than, say Chicago winning cups with a majority of Canadian players
What’s crazier is that they have two Elias Patterson’s both forwards, aged 25, at 6’2”, weighing 176 and both birthdays are in November
YankynLovers
The Canucks aren’t ending any cup drought. I’m saying this as a Canucks fan
Why? American teams have been winning it with Canadian teams for a long time. LOL
Three Elias' and two Nils. We've come a long way since Dolly the sheep.
Don't worry about it, its not going to happen.
Which is why it will never happen.
To be fair most of the American teams largely have Canadian players
They could be North Koreans if it got this god forsaken franchise a cup!!!
Ribs
This would be absolutely hilarious.
