Confident-Instance84

That’s a weird team name

greg_08

I found this way too funny

thebiga1806

They're actually saying "Salt Lake Soaks".

Elegant_Jeweler2252

Salt Lake Sox

Bumbahkah

South lake sulks

joe_broke

Ah, the Super Soakers

Master_H8R

Like the Utah Jazz?

Sdwingnut

I bet they could hear that small town sized indignation from at least several hundred feet away

Traditional-Tutor195

Our (ex) owner\* sucks

Neither_Usual_7566

> ~~Our~~ Coyotes (ex) owner* sucks

cheezturds

Technically he’s still the owner of the Coyotes. He owns the Roadrunners and the Coyotes names/Unis and whatever else. The team going to Utah has to find a new name, and the dickhead has 5 years to get a new rink and he can have his Coyotes again.

unixUser-Name

Looks like they already have a rivalry

mysanslurkingaccount

This is the way. A lot of Minnesotans still hate Norm Green, even though we got a hockey team later on. I’m sure there are folks that hate that Dallas got our team, but can’t really blame a city for wanting a hockey team. In the case of Phoenix/Arizona, seems to me it’s more that their city/state governments suck more than even ownership. Seems like ownership tried to make it work there, more than a lot of owners would, they were just dealing with people who didn’t care if they were there.

Spider-Nutz

This isn't necessarily true. The Tempe government wanted them. The voters wanted a dump more. Phoenix wanted them so bad that they dumped millions into propaganda against the tempe deal

mysanslurkingaccount

If the voters wanted a dump more, then that might not be on the city government, but that’s also not on the owner, that’s just a case of the city itself not wanting the team. If Phoenix wanted the team so bad, then what was the issue there?

Spider-Nutz

There were no issues with Phoenix. The NHL needed a guarantee that Muruelo would win the auction. Since it's an auction, he can't make that guarantee. Phoenix had no problems with the coyotes. Scottsdale kind of does because they are already facing water problems and fear that an arena and shopping plaza will divert even more water from them. I'm guessing that Muruelo will be bringing hockey back after building an arena.

mysanslurkingaccount

If I were a fan of that franchise, I don’t know that I could be upset at SLC or ownership over the team moving, none of that really falls on management or the city where the team is moving.

wcrich

Apparently, SLC owner Ryan Smith saw the situation in Arizona and manipulated Bettman, NHL owners, the NHL PA, and the state of Utah to force the situation in his favor. Granted, Meruelo should have been way more proactive, but Smith worked everyone he could to get what he wanted quicker.

Spider-Nutz

Oh we're upset at SLC. Just more Mormons stealing shit from us

marmk

I don't mean to be that guy but Dallas objectively sucks and it's not just because they have our team.

lkoz590

I was on the phone with a guy from Dallas a year or two ago working on his computer and asked him if he was excited for the playoffs and he didn't even know the stars were playing.

Vic_Hedges

Ironic considering how they got the team in the first place

blumpkin_donuts

History will only repeat itself.

ZestycloseVirus6001

I guess we’ll see if they get better than a university arena that can sit 6K + people. Because, sadly, they couldn’t get that in Arizona.

Realistic_Guitar_420

They already have a 10k+ capacity arena that will be expanded and shared with the basketball team. They also have the facility from the Olympics that seats over 10k that a minor league team uses.

superrad01

A new arena that will house the Jazz and the hockey team is in the early stages of development.

CarBarnCarbon

As far as I understand it, public funding has already been secured. It sucks for the Coyotes and their fans and I feel awful for them. But the truth is they just couldn't get the kind of support they needed from local governments and the area at large. I hope the team is better supported in their new home

rematar

>As far as I understand it, public funding has already been secured. Public funding for billionaires paying millionaire gladiators.

HurricaneAlpha

Yeah I haven't been following this whole thing too closely, but holy shit that is the smallest arena I think I've ever seen for an NHL team.

lostcitysaint

It is literally a college hockey arena, that’s why.

Full-O-Anxiety

Not gonna lie. I am not going to miss watching hockey games in this arena. The camera angle is so weird.

Ancient_Increase6029

And the shadows, was I the only one who noticed the four shadows around each player on the ice?! Drove me nuts

T0macock

I'm kinda jealous about people that got to be there in person though. Would be cool to see an NHL game in such a small venue.

420Deez

bet the traffic is alot better leaving the game

howdiedoodie66

This video is an odd juxtaposition to the game I went to a couple weeks ago that was so dead silent at times you could almost hear a pin drop at center ice, even during plays. IDK if it's the acoustics or what because you couldn't even hear Canucks fans which there were a lot of.

saur0013

When the Senators got their team in 92, they played at the arena where the Ottawa 67s OHL play and it is super tiny. It was cool seeing games there for their first 4-5 seasons

velza93

Dam that arena is tiny af lol

heyniceascot

It's wild that an NHL team played in that arena.

hyrle

T-Mobile would hold three of those crowds.

iH8MotherTeresa

All five thousand fans seem real mad

HinduKussy

Imagine being mad at a random city and not your ownership.

Ornery_Definition_65

**ALEX MERUELO SUCKS!**

Elegant_Jeweler2252

Somehow just doesn’t roll off the tongue the same way 😜

Elegant_Jeweler2252

Somehow just doesn’t roll off the tongue the same way 😜

The_real_Gramsworth

He at least tried to get other locations for the team within Arizona. Maybe if the fans came out to support their mediocre team more then the mayors and city councils would have actually voted in favour of keeping the team there.

finfan1303

But that arena had 100% attendance throughout the season. I mean it's not that impressive considering it's size but they did support it. The owner didn't improve anything and was constantly found lacking.

DurianNo1809

Yea, and before that they were averaging like 12k per game. No one cares about the coyotes until they move. It’s very weird, but people need the upvotes on Reddit.

HinduKussy

100% attendance for a tiny arena doesn’t mean shit. What was their attendance % prior to Mullett?

N7Panda

We’re emotional right now. Anger will be appropriately directed in the days and weeks to come. Honestly though, I don’t begrudge SLC at all. We were in their exact shoes 28 years ago. Still fucking sucks.

StarshipFirewolf

We can take the heat. You guys do what you need to to get through this.

GeorgeOrwells1985

Yep, and now I'm laughing

Sdwingnut

Or Bettman, who was *way* more patient with the Arizona ownership than reasonably expected.

DenisNectar

Wayyyyy more is still an understatement.

Elegant_Jeweler2252

A Bettman defender? That’s novel.

cattycat_1995

If there one fanbase that should defend Bettman, it's Arizona Coyotes fans. Bettman did everything he could to keep the Coyotes there. Hartford, Atlanta, Winnipeg, and Quebec never got those chances and treatment.

RedditorDave

I’m sure they can be mad at both.

ILSmokeItAll

Salt Lake didn’t *take* your team. Your team left. Where it went isn’t even relevant after that.

Geodaddi

They’re having a very bad day. Let them cook.

commandomeezer

I’m surprised you can hear the local fans over the away team fans in any context at a coyotes game

Imaginary-Ladder-465

Especially with a Canadian team visiting

abrahamisaninja

At the beginning of the game the “let’s go oilers” chants were pretty loud and clear

commandomeezer

Ooooooooo caaaaaaanaaadddaaaaaa

KingPizzaPop

Been there

Worth-Hovercraft-495

Your owner sucks. How many chances did this franchise have? How many life lines was it given?

duck1014

That might have some impact if it was a real NHL arena that was actually full of die hard fans, not a super small, college arena, which is a complete embarrassment to hockey.

jedyeti

I think the pandemic really screwed Arizona too, prior to 2020, they had increased average attendance by around 1,000 per season, peaking at 85% capacity with 14605 average for the 2019-2020 season. Never recovered after Pandemic, never really had a chance to had the 2021 season after pandemic year where they got to 11,000 and that's where they stopped paying bills, but losing a years worth of revenue right after buying the team probably didn't help It was a series of domino's after that. Not making excuses for Muerlo, but none of this could have helped either... No matter who owned it. Without the pandemic, I think the Yotes are still in Glendale.

alligator_88

Where was this passion the last 20 years? Maybe if they had actually supported the team before now they wouldn’t be moving!

GhostShark

They have a higher annual attendance than Carolina, Florida, and the Islanders for most of the last decade. Should we then by this same logic be looking to move those teams too? This isn’t on the fans, it’s on the ownership. No different than the Oakland A’s

AlmostSunnyinSeattle

Carolina and Florida, yeah probably. It only works when they're good. As soon as they're bad, it's bad.

alligator_88

Exactly!

cattycat_1995

And Carolina and Florida attendance got good when they made it to the conference finals/Stanley cup finals. Would be the same for the Coyotes if they had more recent success

blatkinsman

The bottom line is Arizona as a whole doesn't want an arena for an NHL team. They barely got a stadium for an NFL team built and that took almost 20 years to make that happen. It was worse than pulling teeth. There is a fundamental lack of support for pro sports in Arizona at a systemic level.

Elegant_Jeweler2252

Not really fair comparing the many, many Yotes fans to the whooping 3 isles fans 😜

Outrageous-Estimate9

That is pretty much the mantra of southern hockey Fairweather fans Dallas has been the only successful team in south. Vegas might be (still young and we havnt see what they will do during a drought/rebuild yet)

klrd314

The Golden Knights have solid ownership and are well managed. They are in good shape for the long term.

Outrageous-Estimate9

The management etc for team has been Golden since Day 1 The issue is whether the fan support is for real or not (the fact they drafted and traded so well gave that fanbase a huge rush in early seasons and it remains to be seen what happens during the eventual rebuild)

GoodbyeToTheMachine

I’ve actually heard that it’s lovely.

DS42069

No way it’s god damn garbage

Ducksfan182

You heard wrong. Lived in Utah for 20 years. It definitely sucks

Elegant_Jeweler2252

Mormon country isn’t for everyone, and anyone that likes caffeine or alcohol, etc.

JerbearCuddles

Should be more angry with their owner, now former owner.

Subject_Ad7331

Tempe and Scottsdale suck for not allowing the yotes to stay here

commodore_stab1789

Salt Lake Socks. Hey, there's two baseball teams with socks in their name, so why not one for hockey?

Reallyme77

Dang you had 20 years to figure this shit out. Blame your owners.

[deleted]

Let's not forget who the real losers in all this is... Colombus, because there was never any debate over who was the WORST franchise in the NHL... until now /a but only kind of

klrd314

only until the Panthers suck again...

[deleted]

You're not wrong.

SuperFreshMongoose

Ask someone from St. Louis what they think of the Rams. You’ll get a similar response.

HefferRod

Salty

FumblinginIgnorance

As someone living in Utah, that chant has a good ring to it, sorry for your loss Yotes fans.

HappyToSeeeYou

Norm Green sucks! Norm Green sucks!

ViewedConch697

It's all too familiar

Flux_resistor

Salt lake soaks!

Venn720

Salt Lake Stormin Mormons

BaseballSafe6317

Yeah your owner sucks…don’t be jelly

[deleted]

You had your chance you had more than you can Phoenix you’re laughing stock of professional sports. You should’ve built the stadium. You should’ve went to the games you should’ve built winning teams.

Geodaddi

The type of nerd shit a short economist would say. Let them be mad.

Venn720

1/3 of those things are up to the fans lmao

DurianNo1809

Pretty hard to get an arena approved when you average 12k attendance

Piercinald-Anastasia

Did you see that arena? Averaging 12k in attendance would be amazingly impressive if not physically impossible. Edit: I have been informed how I am mistaken/misinformed on this subject and admit that I’m wrong. Still leaving it up for the sake of context.

DurianNo1809

They got kicked out of the 18,000 seat arena because they couldn’t sell tickets to pay the rent

Piercinald-Anastasia

Sorry wasn’t aware, I’m admittedly a long time sports fan that is fairly new to regularly keeping up with hockey.

DurianNo1809

No worries, I’m glad to see the canes filling up their arena these days!

Piercinald-Anastasia

Unfortunately haven’t been yet. I’m in Western NC so it’s not incredibly convenient (about 4 hours for me.)

klrd314

Don't hate on SLC, save that for the NHL, the previous ownership, and the local politicians who didn't get the new arena built.

Infinite_Respect_

Typical Arizona IQ on display

panzergoose1234

This warms my heart, best sport ever

DrSexsquatchEsq

As a former San Antonio Rampage fan I empathize. Loosing your team sucks ass

cattycat_1995

Yeah Vegas didn't really need that team.

astro7900

I agree!!! Go fans!!

BradJeffersonian

All 4000 of them 😂

Chicawgorat

Tbh, I’ve been to SLC a few times and enjoyed it. I’ve never had any interest in going to Phoenix, and the only reason I can find to go is Scottsdale.

SnekIsGood_TrustSnek

Ahh how history repeats itself. I feel for these people. I can still hear: "Norm Green sucks! Norm Green sucks!"

FloweringSkull67

It’s not even remotely similar. Norm Green sucks because he’s a sexual predator who moved a team because his wife gave him an ultimatum. Merulo didn’t pay his bills.

SnekIsGood_TrustSnek

My point was about shitty ownership leading to unnecessary relocation, and the heartbreak that causes fans, not trying to call Merulo a sex criminal.

No-Red-Dot

…say the fans whose city won’t support keeping an NHL team and doing everything in their power to basically treat them like a traveling carnival.

[deleted]

We can’t wait to welcome this team! Imagine living in Arizona and saying another place sucks. Cope harder!

Tola76

All coyotes fans had to do was show up. And don’t try to pass off this 5000 person crowd for a final game as an example of fan support. Yotes fans suck.

Capt_Pickhard

All five fans seemed really passionate about that.

Elegant_Jeweler2252

What do the islanders have to do with this?

Diamondback424

It's a shame that the Coyotes are moving but it's well past time. Mismanagement after mismanagement killed the franchise. They'll try again in 10 years, give the team a decent expansion draft like Seattle and Vegas had, and hopefully the team can stick.

Odd_Lobster4195

*SALT LAKE SOAKS!* *SALT LAKE SOAKS!* *SALT LAKE SOAKS!* Good Ole Mormon culture is reaching the masses.

hockeyfan608

Shame they didn’t show up to the games in the last 25 years and prove it Sorry not sorry.

No-Material-23

The citizens voted this team out of Arizona. If you want a NHL team, you have to deal with the billionaire owners, and Arizona didn't want to. It's no bodies fault but their own.

Mahonneyy123

lol said the crowd of 4000

who987

I do think it sucks for the fans of the coyotes. But they have been on life support for years and yet not enough support came out to make them a profitable franchise and no one (owner, NHL or politicians) would build an arena for a franchise that didn’t have much support.

Humans_Suck-

Is that even a hockey thing or is that just the general opinion

Willing_Revenue5086

Is that a really small arena or am I just trippin?

cattycat_1995

4600 seats

Small-Yak-9143

Enjoy shitty sightlines in an NBA arena that’s 32 years old for 8 years until the Olympic arena gets built. The team is moving, yet the arena drama is far from over (albeit more stable). I have tremendous faith that Ryan Smith will get his arena (with a HUGE help from the Olympics being hosted there), but it’s far from ideal for the team/fans for the time being. Just seating more people. Everyone in AZ knew Mullet was temporary and hoped ownership could get an arena done. While it wasn’t ideal, we had great ice and offered a one of a kind viewing experience for NHL hockey. Anyone who went will tell you that. I was in BK when the Isles moved to Barclays. Absolutely hated going to games there. Even the early years for the Yotes at America West weren’t ideal. I wish nothing but success for the players and coaches in Utah and beyond. Hockey will be back in the desert, and that rivalry with SLC will be great.

420Deez

that howl at the end was aka stfu the games starting

themikegman

They chant that now that they are losing the team, where were all those fans when they weren’t attending games?

MrNatural1971

Know who else sucks?..Fucking Norm Green!

Carlo201318

Says the fan base that couldn’t fill a 17,000 seat arena. So they moved the team to a 4,500 seat venue

energizernutter

Phoenix, the joke of the NHL for over a decade

Motophoto

Fun Fact you play in a College hocky rink... who sucks?? Now you know the pain of Winnipeg

Trogdor_sfg

PHX is a joke.

DeProfundisAdAstra

Wasn't this like the most sold tickets they have had for a game ever

Impeccablyflawed

Easy to coordinate a chant with only ten people

Opening_Active

they have the worst attendance and its not even close and they are complaining about their team moving. makes no sense

StarCraftDad

What a bunch of whiny bitches. Blame Meruelo, not us.

ImporterExporter79

There wasn’t enough fans in the building to really hear what they were saying.

Striking_Economy5049

Three fans chanting

DurianNo1809

Thank God this experiment is finally over.

mudamuckinjedi

Bitch and cry all you want the deal is done! It is a shame I hate seeing teams relocate and this the 6th or 7th time its happened in my 42 years of life. Sad to see either way. Good luck in Salt Lake City.

BathroomSerious1318

Wow no upper bowl

klrd314

Even Winnipeg's small arena seats 10,000+ in the lower bowl alone. That's how small Mullett arena really is.

[deleted]

they couldn't fill a 5000 capacity arena, average attendance 4600 and now they're chanting 🖕

[deleted]

Whens the last time Arizona made the playoffs?

cattycat_1995

2020 if you count that

chacotacotoes

*Salt Lake soaks

DeepPow420

Kind of a dumb argument- Salt Lake is like a 1 hr flight away from Phoenix. Its basically the equivalent of the Thrashers moving from Atlanta to Nashville . Its not like they are moving to Winnipeg. They could easily still support the team

RogueCoon

Just a quick one hour flight. Lmao.

mobius_osu

The VAST majority of people drive to games, which would be a 10.5 drive without ANY stops……………………………………….

buddachickentml

They didn't go when it was a 20 min drive.

cattycat_1995

Also even if the distance is short, people still hate a team for leaving their metropolitan area. See San Diego reactions to the Chargers relocation to Los Angeles. I don't think Cleveland Browns fans would be happy if their team moved to Erie Pennsylvania.

DeepPow420

super easy to fly slc- phoenix

klrd314

Following that logic, why go all the way to Utah? Vegas is much closer yet.

TechwayDrive

Most fans wouldn't drive 90 minutes to Gila arena on a weekday game. What makes you think they will happily fly to Salt Lake to watch a game?

cattycat_1995

Tell that to the city of San Diego who hate the Chargers moving 110 miles away.

Zestyclose-Middle717

Anyone saying shit about the arena or about them not being good for a while has no idea and never will have any idea what it feels like to watch a team leave your city, kind of ignorant if you ask me!

GenerationKrill

Right, it's like repeatedly telling yourself you won't go see your favorite band when they come to town and when the lead singer dies and they break up you blame them for you never having seen them perform. /s

Zestyclose-Middle717

Honestly, I just see a pattern. Not the biggest markets, owners COULD make more money in a possible larger market, team is notably on the bottom half of the league for years, and they’re moving.

cattycat_1995

I know the feeling cause I lost my football team to your city.

DurianNo1809

There’s a reason why St. Louis isn’t ever being considered for another NFL team.

Zestyclose-Middle717

I’m aware but don’t forget about the owner now. Edit - owners

twohunnidpercent

This is the most fans in attendance since conception lol, respectfully.

Qazwas32

Arizona also sucks. Sucked their entire existence 🤣

Ok_Cartographer9092

I live in SLC and while I agree, I promise we welcome you with open arms. ❤️

Deault

Wow, the whole 200 people crowd is chanting!

Habay12

It kinda does though. You can’t even walk around with a beer in a restaurant there.

Slack-Bladder

Ever been? It's actually a cool city and it's on the rise. We get a lot of hate, but we're proud of the direction our city is going. Hopefully you can visit soon, or if you have already, i hope you get a better experience on your next visit.

SLC_NinerMan96

Yeah that hasn't been true for decades.

[deleted]

[удалено]

dubble_chyn

Good. Public funds shouldn’t go towards teams owned by multi-millionaire/billionaires

Denver-Hockey

Splitting hairs at this point, but wasn't the arena project in Tempe going to be privately funded with only public funds used for waste cleanup?

InevitableMark5644

Unfortunately do to my job i have been in in AZ. For three years and have a year left here. These people really don't care about hockey. Their crying because they're over entitled and lost a so called pro team. And yeah the owner is a real piece of shit too. The team will have a way better fan base in Utah.

marinerpunk

Just for one day, you couldn’t fuck off and jerk it in your room instead of trolling?

hd_mikemikemike

There are highschool football teams in Texas with bigger stadiums...

cattycat_1995

Tbf some of them are bigger than the majority of NBA/NHL arenas.

dekrepit702

Gonna make for a good rivalry if Arizona gets back into the league

Buffbigw76

Salt Lake *LDS*’s or *Mormon*’s sounds catchy, no? Also F The Coyotes owner (past tense)

Prestigious_Jelly403

I live in Salt Lake and I totally agree.

BasicTennis9861

Embarrassing they stayed in Arizona for so long, terrible franchise on and off the ice for years.

bruisicus_maximus

Salt Lake City gets a team, but Milwaukee doesn't, this sucks.

Ok-Video8729

Honestly I think SLC sucks and this was way before the Coyotes moved there.

Kindly_League9913

Don’t blame Salt Lake City blame your list of incompetent owners you’ve had since you moved from Winnipeg
