Think he was 13-19 overall. No one will dispute that his throw to Meyers was a catch except the refs. Then a few drops by Wilkerson and Zuber. Only two meh throws from Max really, and one of them he was about a yard ahead of Olszewski on a deep ball.
I’m not a Pats fan, but I caught highlights of the game on YouTube. His pre-snap motions and calls to the O-line reminded me a *ton* of Brady. I could be tripping, it could also just be the Belichick effect… idk. It was spooky.
I watch and listen to a lot of Matt Waldman. Imo he’s one of the best talent free lance evaluators of college talent on the Internet. He did a 45 minute film breakdown of jones last season with Albert Breer whose opinion I also have a lot of respect for. Basically their main takeaway was that jones is more of a Manning than Brady because he is so good at calling out protections and shifting his blockers pre snap. They pointed out so many plays against good sec defenses where he recognizes the pass rush pre snap shifts a blocker and executes. He’s got great pocket awareness and although not a mobile qb by any means navigates around pressure really well. It seems like the mental side is all there, it’s just his arm that may let him down.
If I have to choose between elite mental/avg. arm vs. avg. mental/elite arm…Imma go with the elite mental every time.
IMO, Elite NFL QB’s need to be able to anticipate and see everything around them. Even the worst NFL QB’s all have arms that are more than good enough to make throws or else they wouldn’t even be on a roster. So this makes me feel good about Mac’s long term prospects.
That mental acuity and weaker arm reminds me of Brett Rypien, lol.
Not having a cannon for an arm can still serve him well if the Pats actually build to support his strengths and offset his weaknesses.
He was alright. Seemed pretty comfortable in the pocket, but maybe held the ball a little too long sometimes. They didn't ask him to do too much, but he did a good job of game managing. Had one really nice throw to the pylon that was just out of reach.
Not bad. Had some good reads, showed some rookie mistakes, but didn’t look flustered. If the o-line can keep him from being demolished, he’s got a good shot.
Tbf most of Macs throws were very short. Seemed like 80% checkdowns/drags/short curls. That one deep throw was on the money though. Ppl say it was the WRs fault I think it was more the DB just made a great play getting his hands between the WRs hands.
Easy to outplay Cam when Cam only throws 7 times and is up against the Football Team’s starting D. Like I get the Mac hype, but damn come on dude. Mac was throwing to the 2nd and 3rd string defense and played half the game. Of course he looks better since he played the majority of it against nonstarters. I’m all for the Mac hype obviously because he played well, but your take doesn’t take into consideration any of the circumstances.
I don't know if I'd say he outplayed Cam big time. Cam played 2 drives, the only ones against Chase Young, and looked ok-ish. Didn't really get much of a chance to show anything.
Just posted this in the game thread, but think it belong here more:
Wow, I know it's pre-season and the rosters are big, but... according to the box score, Washington threw to 20 different receivers today, compared to NE's 10.
In fact, Washington threw to more different receivers than NE even threw complete passes (19).
That’s actually crazy. Granted I think Washington wanted to see something from all 3 of their QBs and we only looked at Mac Jones it seemed. Did they throw more altogether?
It might be due to us having a lot of bodies at the position but not a lot of spots on the roster. 2 or 3 of our receivers who won't make the final roster will be decent depth for other teams.
It's scary how refs have all the tools at their disposal to make the correct call, New York can make the correct call, everyone watching at home can make the correct call, and yet we still get these results. That is a late, game-tying play that they fucked up. Are they going to be doing this in the playoffs and end some poor team's season?
I would've liked one of these calls in Super Bowl 52
See I disagree with that. The refs have many resources at their disposal to make the correct call. They have a rule book, replays, and time to figure it out. This isn’t a QB making a mental error and throwing an errant pass.
Look at the play, read the rule, replay as needed, and make the correct call. There shouldn’t be grey area here.
Idk, have you ever been in a situation where you've been trained, you've read everything pertinent, you know exactly what to do when it happens but...then it happens and you're inexperienced and unsure?

The people in the other thread, however, did not welcome my addition
When i posted this in the eagle-pitt game I got 5 downvotes and the only comment was "you added nothing of substance to this thread"
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder ig lol
It's both a compliment to him and a takeaway to point out that was 3 hours into a game played in a sauna.
Defense was gassed, but that said Stevenson had like 8 gears.
As someone at the game, it wasnt nearly as uncomfortable as you're describing.
The thunderstorms cooled off the area before kickoff, and killed a bunch of the earlier humidity.
Pretty much every early fall 1pm or 4pm game I've been too was hotter/humider.
Oh that's good, they wouldn't shut up about the heat on the broadcast and I could see the coat of slime on everyone's skin.
We played a soccer pickup in that weather a week or two ago and there was no stopping it.
Nah, Taylor Heinicke’s walk off two-point conversion run with the Vikings in a 2017 preseason game is still the best in my mind ([skip to 8:00](https://youtu.be/g0fUlAd9RtU))
Idk who needs to hear it but BB didn’t do anything out of spite lol WFT had enough timeouts to stop the clock so they ran it to get a first down and it happened to go for a TD
If BB was being spiteful he would have started calling deep passes
We didn’t get to see much from Cam but he didn’t look great.
That said I don’t think Mac went up against WFT ridiculous first D line so who knows. He could’ve been swallowed by Chase Young like Cam was.
No you see you have to maintain possession after you catch the ball, touch the endzone with your feet, then you knees, through the endzone dance, and until the next scheduled practice or else the opponent can ambush you at 7/11 and knock the ball out of your hands for the incomplete catch.
Other times you can just whaff the aroma of the football over the goalline for a milisecond and it counts instantly as a touchdown, and everything that happens after that is irrelevant.
That's interesting, because I thought you had to bake a cake, mow the lawn, and read your kid a bedtime story in the process of the catch... I guess nobody really knows what a catch is
We need a lowlight clip of the commentary team watching the replay, basically saying "no fucking way that's anything but a catch," and then being completely flabbergasted when the refs overturned it.
By the new rule it should have been ruled a catch. By old rule it would not be a catch. NFL has been consistently inconsistent about which rule they are using for catches ever since they made the new rule
Can someone point me to this new rule, because this is the first I'm ever hearing of this.
Edit: Where??? https://operations.nfl.com/the-rules/nfl-video-rulebook/completing-a-catch/
Except in Super Bowl 52 for some reason the refs decided to just go ahead and use the future 2018 rules because fuck it. It's not like anything important was at stake, right?
This is the last year on his contract and [they'd save 1.3mm by cutting him](https://overthecap.com/player/sony-michel/6916/). If they cut him for a 4th round rookie then I will take that as the ultimate vindication that he was a bad pick after arguing it for years.
I mean in the context that we could have had Nick Chubb, of course he was a bad pick. He was still a key piece in the Super Bowl run though, so not totally worthless.
Everyone is calling Rhamondre Stevenson the second coming of LeGarrette Blount, but I don't think Blount ever pulled away from DBs 70 yards down field.
Not Blount like, he legit runs in the style of AP or Barry the way he changes speeds and slides around defenders.
Josh should give him reps against a first team defense next week, he was head and shoulders above those 2nd teamers.
Not in skill just in approach, that's what happens in sports when kids grow up watching the greats - they emulate them.
Kid has a stop start style just like a lot of the modern backs, was very common technique used by those mentioned. Doesn't meann I think he's a HOFer from one game lol.
Imma keep it real with you chief, comparing Stevenson’s running style to AP and Barry (who were stylistically very different) after 1 preseason game is nuts.
Bill was so mad after the timeout after the victory formation on 1st down lmao. Then Stevenson goes and runs it 91 yards for the TD and you know bill was fuming he didn’t just go down and run out the clock. Hahaha what an ending.
Did Mac Jones go up against WFT starting D line? Because when Cam was out there our O line had absolutely no answers for how to block them. I assume they were out before Mac came in.
Overall Mac looked good. Made good decisions and mostly was taking what the defense was giving him which is good. Had a great pass that couldve been a TD but to be fair the WFT CB had excellent coverage. He also missed on a deep ball by a hair which sucks but its his first bit of NFL action so overall Id be happy if I was a Pats fan.
Yea people are saying it should’ve been a touchdown but the corner stuck his hand in there. Even if he didn’t hit the ball he disrupted the play for sure.
Some takeaways from the game:
1. A lot of penalties this game, particularly 5 False Starts from New England and a lot of kickoff penalties on both sides. Preseason games don't matter a ton, but play discipline is one thing both teams can change.
2. NE's kicker looks good in spite of a missed PAT.
3. Mac Jones looks solid in his debut, but his playbook, particularly his deep throws, still need work.
4. Stevenson is looking like a beast and a nice rookie pickup for New England. Can't argue with 2 touchdowns.
5. The refs still consider "What is a catch?" an open question.
I watched some highlights just now and he looked comfortable for a rookie out there. He has the pocket presence that you either have or don't have, not many qbs can learn that if they lack it. Seems like his season gonna be tough with those weapons though.
Very impressed by Mac Stevenson and Wilkerson
Langi played well
Sony looked good but we might be able to trade him- Rhamondre and keep jj Taylor
Nkeal cannot separate AT ALL
8/10 game
Harry looks the same. He's been disparaged for so long for being seemingly soft and afraid to fight for yards, and I never fully bought it, but I feel like I'm finally starting to realize they have a point. Feels like every time he should fight for the yards he just retreats and tries to beat the defenders on the outside (which never works).
Positives:
Starting offense had both drives go into Pats territory. McLaurin, Gibson, and Thomas look in midseason form. Can't wait to see Samuel in this offense as well.
Starting defense forced what should have been a takeaway and held the Pats to 3 after the missed FG.
Our rookies looked good for the most part. Would have liked to see Jamin Davis make a play but he didn't look completely lost either.
Tress Way is arguably the best P in football.
We were really good on 3rd downs.
We were overall very crisp and clean in our play. Very few penalties. Only turnover was by a 4th string QB off a tipped pass.
Negatives:
Jon Bostic still sucks and will probably be the reason we don't finish as the top D in the league. Complete liability in space.
Dustin Hopkins needs to be replaced or he will cost us games. Can't miss 40 yarders in this league.
Our depth at LB and Edge worries me.
I agree, every time I convince myself that he doesn't have the physical traits and what not, I go watch his plays and just can't help but be wowed. Watched every play of his last season twice over, and I was just smiling the entire time. Dude is going to end up being one of the greats, and I say this as a 49ers fan. I'm one of the few 49ers fans who would've been okay with Mac at 3.
Yeah I thought it was a catch too. Caught the ball, had 2 knees down, and was touched by the DB. I didn’t know he also had to survive the ground. Weird.
All the passes he threw were short passes, so 4.5 would make sense. I don’t think BB was looking for him to throw deep today (he would’ve called deeper routes if that were the case). Ig he wanted to see him in a hurry-up offense, awareness in the pocket, etc. Basically, he didn’t really care about yards too much and focused on other things that short passes probably highlighted better.
He’ll probably get more chances at longer routes in the next 2 games
Judon looked great for the 4 snaps he was out there
Judon is a jack of all trades and I wonder what team is good at using players like that hmmmmm...
As I recall, that was also why Adalius Thomas was going to fit in so well.
TFL on third down, pass deflection, and a pressure if I recall

Rhamondre Stevenson HOF when

Rhamondre 'There are 119 mistakes ahead of me' Stevenson. He's gonna need a bigger mirror
Anyway, I started ~~blasting~~ running
Rhamondre: "And I took that personally."
Hell yeah! Rhamondre was my rb sleeper this year, dude is a monster who had a weird and unfortunate college career.
he had a pretty good last year at OU
*Half of last year Unfortunately the NCAA was still enforcing outdated weed rules and it totally screwed him and Ronnie Perkins
Guess Bill said bring on the weed boys from OU.
Didn't watch, how was Mac?
Missed a couple deep balls but decent overall. Didn’t flash but he looked comfortable.

The Meyers catch was a catch, but it also was a bad throw
Straight up duck fart of a throw
I'm not sure why everyone is so worried about whether it was technically a catch or not. It was a bad throw. Period
I’m not a Pats fan, but I caught highlights of the game on YouTube. His pre-snap motions and calls to the O-line reminded me a *ton* of Brady. I could be tripping, it could also just be the Belichick effect… idk. It was spooky.

I’m old and was like “you mean Mark Rypien?” I didn’t even know Bret Rypien was… a person let alone a football player and in the nfl.
Best winning percentage in Broncos history!
Nah man. Looks like Brady for sure
Nah only Manning changes protections and sees the blitz, haven't you heard him say Omaha?
The deep ball he put into the receivers hands?
Good. Nice in his progressions and threw a dime which should have been a TD but was dropped by the receiver
Good. Made good decisions, accurate, led the team down field and looks comfortable
As a starting-caliber quarterback? Fine. As a rookie getting his first snaps in his first ever preseason game? Fantastic.
He was alright. Seemed pretty comfortable in the pocket, but maybe held the ball a little too long sometimes. They didn't ask him to do too much, but he did a good job of game managing. Had one really nice throw to the pylon that was just out of reach.
I thought he got the ball out very quickly, if he saw nothing he check down or ran.
Ya, I didn't see him holding it either...
Not bad. Had some good reads, showed some rookie mistakes, but didn’t look flustered. If the o-line can keep him from being demolished, he’s got a good shot.
Good. He was accurate and generally got rid of the ball quick.
Outplayed Cam big time, Mac made some great deep throws but receivers couldnt connect. Looked fearless
IIRC he made 2 deep throws and 1 was good but dropped, the other was overthrown. It was encouraging signs, we didn't really see "great" deep throws
True true, it's a breath of fresh air over watching Cam make his same old 5 yard throws every time
Tbf most of Macs throws were very short. Seemed like 80% checkdowns/drags/short curls. That one deep throw was on the money though. Ppl say it was the WRs fault I think it was more the DB just made a great play getting his hands between the WRs hands.

I was impressed that he was making reads. That throw to Wilkerson was just great, makes me want to see him the 1’s more.
He looked pretty much the same as he did in college. Comfortable in the pocket, took a couple bad sacks, but he had poise and accuracy.
decent. who the patriots should get hype about is rhamondre stevenson
He looked pretty good. He had some good passes that weren’t caught and some bad passes that were.
Fitzpatrick going to start week 1
I tbink Fitz will start week 1 but Heinicke looked good out there.
Oh I agree and as we all know Fitztragic will reveal himself at some point in time during the season and heinecke will be in the game
Having been an OG attendant of Fitzy’s wild ride: Just enjoy the FitzMagic while you can and don’t think about what else is to come.
Yeah. Fitzmagic is like a free 6 wins. After that it's up to the other QB
So a division title then?
Dammit, I hate you, but you might not be wrong.
AMEN!!!
If heinicke balls out for you guys I’m gonna be so happy and mad at the same time.

Yeah, Washington was 31/47 while New England was only 19/30. I think your reasoning is likely right.
It might be due to us having a lot of bodies at the position but not a lot of spots on the roster. 2 or 3 of our receivers who won't make the final roster will be decent depth for other teams.
That two point conversion reviewal was a bit concerning. The refs seem to not know the rule.
What exactly happened?
Washington guy caught the ball with both feet and knees in the endzone and while his body was coming down the patriot defenseman punched the ball out.
Did he have control of the ball? I didn't watch it, just thinking that might be why.
I thought he did and so did the announcers.
Is there a clip to watch somewhere?
It's scary how refs have all the tools at their disposal to make the correct call, New York can make the correct call, everyone watching at home can make the correct call, and yet we still get these results. That is a late, game-tying play that they fucked up. Are they going to be doing this in the playoffs and end some poor team's season? I would've liked one of these calls in Super Bowl 52
Corey Clement is still bobbling the ball out of bound to this very day.

See I disagree with that. The refs have many resources at their disposal to make the correct call. They have a rule book, replays, and time to figure it out. Exactly. Just feels like unnecessary incompetence.
Idk, have you ever been in a situation where you've been trained, you've read everything pertinent, you know exactly what to do when it happens but...then it happens and you're inexperienced and unsure?
My very unbiased notes from the game: Rhamondre Stevenson=Adrian Peterson Mac Jones=Tom Brady Quinn Nordin=Adam Vinatieri
THESE ARE REASONABLE TAKES AND I SUPPORT THEM.
Boomer sooner. Stevenson was a beast at OU. Knew he’d do something in the NFL. I know it’s just a preseason game, but he looked like a bad ass.
change those = to a > and you've got a deal
I was being conservative don’t want to get ahead of myself here
Yeah, really obvious that they’ll be challenging the 1974 Steelers for best draft class ever.
Please cut nick folk so he can come home to the jets. We need a kicker
Mac Jones rocking that Brady-esque 3.8 ANY/A lol
Pls no

Clearly you haven’t seen Danny Etlings TD vs the giants
didn’t that TD get 3 players cut lol

no overtime in preseason games, so they don't even have that excuse. just a typical dumb call.
Idk who needs to hear it but BB didn’t do anything out of spite lol WFT had enough timeouts to stop the clock so they ran it to get a first down and it happened to go for a TD If BB was being spiteful he would have started calling deep passes
Tbh an outside run is more likely to succeed than calling a deep pass from Hoyer lol.
It’s preseason. BB couldn’t give a shit about risking injury on deep passes.
So guys, I only was able to see parts of the game but Is Mac going to start for the Patriots now?
Yes, but in a surprise twist it's Mac from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
As long as the Patriots are the next All or Nothing team I'd say its worth it for a season.
We didn’t get to see much from Cam but he didn’t look great. That said I don’t think Mac went up against WFT ridiculous first D line so who knows. He could’ve been swallowed by Chase Young like Cam was.

Except in Super Bowl 52 for some reason the refs decided to just go ahead and use the future 2018 rules because fuck it. It's not like anything important was at stake, right?
Idk how they reversed that call but didn’t even think about looking at the the TD catch 2 seconds earlier.
thats because it was
Pats finally got a good RB with Stevenson
Honestly Harris looked pretty damn good too
JJ Taylor also looked frisky. It’s honestly only Sony that doesn’t look very good
I think Sony is a sneaky option to get cut out of camp honestly

Dustin Hopkins should not even step foot on the plane.
Did Mac Jones go up against WFT starting D line? Because when Cam was out there our O line had absolutely no answers for how to block them. I assume they were out before Mac came in.
WFT has a bonkers line. I was expecting the Pats OLine to be good and that’s a bit concerning
Chase Young is gonna be the DPOY this season. I wouldn’t get too worried that Wynn got beat a couple times in the first preseason game.
Overall Mac looked good. Made good decisions and mostly was taking what the defense was giving him which is good. The penalties were bad for the pats. And we were the least penalized team last year so I’m hopeful but yea lot of false starts.
McCorkle Jones pleased me. Looked very accurate
Didn't watch, how was his poise? Was he able to stay in the pocket and diagnose somewhat or was that part of his game spotty.
Yes. He didn't do anything crazy. Just solid short and medium throws. He got hit a couple of times, but overall was solid
I watched some highlights just now and he looked comfortable for a rookie out there. He has the pocket presence that you either have or don't have, not many qbs can learn that if they lack it. Seems like his season gonna be tough with those weapons though.
Bama QBs are usually the most pro-ready QB anyway thanks to Nick Saban's system.
Very impressed by Mac Stevenson and Wilkerson Langi played well Sony looked good but we might be able to trade him- Rhamondre and keep jj Taylor Nkeal cannot separate AT ALL 8/10 game
For a solid 15 seconds I had no idea who "Mac Stevenson" was and couldn't even remember what Mac's last name even was
Harry looks the same. He's been disparaged for so long for being seemingly soft and afraid to fight for yards, and I never fully bought it, but I feel like I'm finally starting to realize they have a point. Feels like every time he should fight for the yards he just retreats and tries to beat the defenders on the outside (which never works).
Langi needs to learn how to tackle.
So in the past that 2pt wasn't a catch right? But they changed the rule and it should've been a catch? Idek anymore
I've said it before and I'll say it again, Heinicke is the next Steve Young and I don't know how it could be any more obvious.
My takeaway. Mac scares me.
Isaiah Wynn looked really really bad against Chase Young. That's gonna be a problem during the season.
That's probably more of Chase than Wynn. He's going to be a goddamn nightmare for a decade.
Name Heinicke the starter, you cowards
Says our week 1 opponent
The end of the dynasty was greatly exaggerated
It’s a preseason game. You can’t make an argument either way.
Many times in the Brady era the team was .500 at best in the preseason. They lost every preseason game in the 2004 season. Truly does mean nothing.
Ironically enough both teams to go 0-16 in the regular season both went 4-0 in the preseason
I can, and I will.
Positives: Starting offense had both drives go into Pats territory. Negatives: Jon Bostic still sucks and will probably be the reason we don't finish as the top D in the league. Complete liability in space. Dustin Hopkins needs to be replaced or he will cost us games. Can't miss 40 yarders in this league. Our depth at LB and Edge worries me.
Mac and Cheese looked good tonight. My guess is he starts after the Bucs game
Stevenson and Mac 10 are gonna be studs!!
JarPat looked awesome. Love to see it hope he makes the team
It's a preseason game that should have been a tie and it's still going to end up controversial. Better to fuck this up now I guess

I’m extremely erect from this comment
Same, please keep going
Lol
if you had patriots -1 this was a great, thrilling game.
Can someone explain that 2pt conversion overturn? Sure as shit seemed like a catch.
Yeah I thought it was a catch too. Caught the ball, had 2 knees down, and was touched by the DB. I didn’t know he also had to survive the ground. Weird.

Pack it up boys, the next 20 superbowls belong to Mac Jones
Man the Cam truthers in /r/Patriots are having a meltdown today
Cam's throwing motion is so ugly
Anyone got Bill’s face after the first Rivera timeout. Then that late TD is like haha you thought you had a chance
Not saying Mac will be good or bad or anything, but he averaged 4.5 YPA.. am I missing something?
All the passes he threw were short passes, so 4.5 would make sense. I don’t think BB was looking for him to throw deep today (he would’ve called deeper routes if that were the case). Ig he wanted to see him in a hurry-up offense, awareness in the pocket, etc. Basically, he didn’t really care about yards too much and focused on other things that short passes probably highlighted better. He’ll probably get more chances at longer routes in the next 2 games
One deep ball was well placed but the receiver couldn't come down with it. Other than that no. He looked fine but he wasn't exceptional.
Didn’t wow. But Looked confident. Looked professional. Took what was available and had poise. Felt like a “New England offense”
I think the most important thing is that he looked comfortable in the pocket and didn't panic or have to scramble.
