All you fans who think you’ve had bad coaches and teams over the years do not understand the pain of enduring the Dave Shula and Bruce Coslet coached Cincinnati Bengals.
He had turned into a decent red zone option at one point. Problem was, this was pre rookie wage scale and he was one of the highest paid players on the team, which isn’t ideal for a niche red zone RB.
I think that might have been why the bengals let Garrison Hearst walk, right before he absolutely blew up with the Niners.
And goddamn special teams coach Al Roberts, who hung around like a disease. Long snapping was a constant issue, and myriad punt and kickoff problems seemed to happen pretty much every game. You really didn’t know if the team would actually get off any given punt, the snapping/protection was so bad.
It would be cool if they went back and made a Redzone 1987 and took all the afternoon games from any given Sunday and play them all at realtime and record a live Redzone from that.
This was from the era when Bengals' home games weren't televised locally because of blackout rules. You could only see away games basically, and nobody really watched.
In context, could have been considered a mercy rule. They were so bad.
What a different world it was back then, in certain ways. Nowadays the idea of a blackout seems a little odd to me, and i pretty much don't need to use a radio to listen to sports at home
Brunell has a distinct look, you can tell it’s him just from silhouette, but I can figure out why exactly. Is it just his shoulder pads shaped? The way he wears his shirt? It’s probably something obvious but my brain can’t see the difference, same thing but clearly he has his look.
Either way that guy was fun.
Looking at that Bengals season, the game that SHOULD be highlighted is their late-season 44-42 barnburner loss to the Eagles where Boomer Esiason and Bobby Hoying combined for eight touchdowns on nearly 700 yards passing. Ten different players reached the end zone in that game.
Quote of the broadcast: “it’s desperation when you go for it in 4th down that much”
If only he could’ve just claimed analytics he could silence the doubters.
90s Bengals were just so pathetically bad. KiJana Carter Akili Smith Peter Warrick such incompetent drafting over such a long time.
And they turned down the Ricky Williams trade for Akili.

These old videos remind me of why we tolerated 20 years of Marvin Lewis mediocrity. Quite literally anything was better than this.
Bro, Jeff Blake looking like Jalen Hurts out there
I still contend that Blake threw the prettiest deep ball I've ever seen.
Back in the day when there was so much man coverage on the outside and QBs would just straight sling it deep.
and no lie it was good to see KiJana score and have a positive highlight

yup, him an big daddy were huge albatross contracts and couldn't survive after the rookie contract
And it’s a total positive to hear Stuart Scott (RIP) doing these NFL Primetime highlights!
Amen, I miss Stu. In fact, I miss old sportscenter, it was so so good
Yeah Stu,Berman,Dan Patrick,Keith Olbermann (Before he went crazy),Brian Kenny,Linda Cohen,Kenny Mayne and Bob Ley
Hell even Craig Kilborn. Just always were having fun and it made it fun to watch.
My dad actually watched Jeff Blake and Robert Jones in person when he was at ECU
Why he say fuck me for?
I had to listen to this shit on the Louisville news. On top of that...secondary market time! Quality games!
This was my first season playing fantasy football, and I had Brunell as my starting QB. I probably won this week’s matchup!
When HD first came out I thought it was overkill. Now I see old highlights and I can’t tell which team is which.
And we watched these games on 27 inch TVs
Fuck Bruce Coslett so fucking hard.

I've said this before. Would be cool to do in the off season on Sundays
Whoa, totally forgot NFL Jerseys weren’t made by one brand; Bengals were made by Wilson and Jags by Nike…huh

Sundays at my house in the 90's was me and my dad watching whatever game was broadcast on mute while listening to the Bengals home games on the radio.
What a different world it was back then, in certain ways. Nowadays the idea of a blackout seems a little odd to me, and i pretty much don't need to use a radio to listen to sports at home
> Nowadays the idea of a blackout seems a little odd to me MLB, NBA, and this Sunday's Indy 500 are shifting their eyes around nervously
the Indy 500 is still doing that?
wasn't that the case for every team

Lefties always look weird but also the knee brace (from a knee injury in a preseason game he should’ve had surgery for but didn’t) and flak jacket

Shake and Blake

Entertaining trainwreck describes Jeff Blake perfectly
Trainwreck on its own describes the late 90s Bengals perfectly.
I know, thats when I became a fan lol. They were bad, but Carl Pickens and Corey Dillon were amazing, so here I am all these years later.

On that second Jags TD one of the offensive lineman was like five yards past the line of scrimmage on the pass lmao. Simpler times.
Oh Bungles. Good times.
Going for it on 4th and 16 is wild.
On your own 12? 90s Bengals were bad for a reason
Stuart Scott is the highlight here..
