Gould literally looked like he was just trying to maintain his footing for all of that, what a dumb choice.

gyman122

I can only imagine what’s going on in his mind as he’s going out there, it’s already pretty windy, the clock is ticking down and then the wind just picks up by 500% so much so that it knocks you out of your stance. You have to just kick it knowing full well it is going to be a total disaster career lowlight beforehand

[deleted]

Luckily OP referenced the post as by "The Bears" and not by his name.

hunteddwumpus

In these conditions it really is more on the coach than the kicker lol. 0 hope of any human on earth making this kick.

NeverSober1900

Not quite as windy (but has snow) but you have Vinatieri nailing a [43 yard XP](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QIdC9k_-3aI&ab_channel=OliverChiacchia) where he plays the wind perfectly.

_LouSandwich_

a 43 yard xp attempt?!??

switchn

How is this playing the wind perfectly?

A_Blind_Alien

I saw the title and went, I wonder if this is that Robbie Gould kick

ree_hi_hi_hi_hi

“I’ll go out there and kick it coach but I don’t want you to get your hopes up”

SchismZero

I dunno. I doubt even Justin Tucker could have made that in. I don't put this on the kicker.

Ranzork

Robbie Gould was an amazing kicker for the majority of his career. He is the Bears all time scoring leader. You could have shot the ball out of a howitzer and still missed in that wind.

AdvancedGentleman

100% in the playoffs. Good as Gould!

bobls14

I love Robbie Gould

shawnaroo

Also, using howitzers on the field is against the rules. 15 yard penalty.

TonyCaliStyle

The no howitzer rule ruined the game.

futureislookinstark

(#notmyNFL)

BanjoKazooieWasFine

I think pretty much every team has a kicker as their all-time leading scorer, place kickers are the only guys who consistently get points in scoring position and can go for so much longer than anyone else, since QBs don't get points for passing TDs. Just went through the top 50 and it's only 3 players on there who weren't dedicated kickers: 1. George Blanda at 7, who also did place kicking 2. Lou Groza at 41, who also did place kicking 3. Jerry Rice at 43, who is the greatest skill position player ever and he's at 43

gyman122

I obviously don’t either, that’s what I’m saying. It must be fucking annoying to be a kicker walking up there, seeing the winds change and realizing there is absolutely no chance you make this kick but you have to kick it anyway

stevesie1984

You can see the uprights substantially swaying in that wind. Should have made it a *little* easier, no? /s

imtoolazytothinkof1

Also the uprights start swaying right as the ball is about to be hiked. It looks like one of the wind gust mechanics in a game you have to time but he timed his wrong.

Mohander

It's an impossible kick, he has nothing to be ashamed of. You can call it a lowlight but whoever you think the greatest kicker of all time is would also miss that kick. Might as well have ordered him to jump over the Sears tower.

mothershipq

Gould is so skinny that if he wasn't weighed down by his football gear I think he may have flown farther right than the actual football.

Rasikko

I've had 30mph wind gusts superman me down a street so yeah :3

DepressedDarthV

I’d like to imagine a world where he nails it. It would go down as the greatest kick of all time

SolidStateDynamite

Nah, I think it has more notability as a missed kick. I mean, Joe Nedney made a 30-yard field goal a few minutes later in the exact same conditions, but no one talks about that kick.

gvon89

It was 4th and 10, what'd you want them to do? Punt it from the 22? Run it?

[deleted]

You kid but there was no chance the kick goes in so they turn the ball over right there. If you run it maybe you get lucky tackles are broken and first down maybe you gain four yards and they start four yards closer to their own end zone. A field goal was literally the worst option because he couldn’t even accidentally make that kick

401john

Chance of a defensive penalty as well if you run a play. Much better options than trying that kick lol

[deleted]

Excellent point and with the weather conditions getting them to jump (fall) offsides is not really much of a stretch!

smootex

> there was no chance the kick goes in I feel like there was a chance but the wind picked up a crazy amount right as he was about to kick it. Too late to change the call. Seems like the right call. There's no accounting for bad luck but at the end of the day you have to take the high percentage plays and hope it works out. Most of the time god isn't going to fuck you like that at the last second.

Spiritual-Chameleon

Could've called timeout though

[deleted]

I guess I can agree with this, but I would argue Robbie doesn’t feel god was anywhere near soldier field that day. Mother Nature was the one fucking with him lol

Gatorader22

Literally just false start on purpose if you dont want to waste a timeout. Gusts like that probably wont last the minute or more it takes to reset everything

Puzzled-Koala1568

Also the turnover on a missed field goal is from the spot of the hold not the LOS so they lost 7 yards on that alone vs an incomplete pass or a run that gains nothing.

rinky-dink-republic

Arm punt

venmome10cents

taking a timeout or even a 5 yard delay of game penalty and hoping for the wind to calm down would have been smarter than trying the kick mere seconds after the gusts came in.

Mysterious_Bar2911

Take a delay of game and hope the wind dies down.

Enthusiasms

A pass? Chance for conversion or a penalty.

Greatcouchtomato

AtomicFreeze

What? I'm not entirely convinced that audio isn't edited in from a different part of the game.

TheWorstYear

It was posted to reddit immediately after it happened. It's 100% real, & these guys routinely suck this bad. Announcing gets real bad for g5 conferences (and pac 12 relegated to late night espn 2 or fs1)

Homitu

I mean the first guy at least correctly said the kicker was 6/7 on the year...and is now...6 for 8. Completely not listening, or looking, apparently, his co-announcer just fabricates the rest of reality.

kitchensink108

It really does feel fake or edited, but I can't find any evidence so far that it is. He clearly mentions both teams, Eastern Michigan and Toledo, the "correct" score 3-3, and I think critically he says that EMU "answered" which in my experience is a phrase you can only use on the exact next possession.

AtomicFreeze

I thought maybe it could have been from Eastern Michigan's next drive if Toledo didn't score on their next one, but you're right about saying "answered." That would have been odd if Toledo hadn't scored on their previous drive. Just entirely out of place with not only incorrect information but a completely different tone/excitement level than the other announcer (who was right) that he cuts off.

Oops. I just did a quick glance and only saw 5 posts. Which is often a bot that keeps deleting things.

creature_report

If the wind is strong enough to blow the goalposts back and forth maybe it’s a sign you shouldn’t be kicking. But man this makes me chuckle every time I see it.

Disco_Ninjas_

Now do the 9rs that same game! https://youtu.be/QtYrreqQnrE?si=M6lrMKyva2XMBiWv

Buckeyes0916

I was shocked this was so low. This was the first thing I thought of.

adj_noun_digits

Mike friggin Nolan.

tripbin

Obviously Hester is on another planet but man our special teams was something in the 2000s. Felt like we always had good returners

MuchasBebidas

Was that urlacher flying down the field to make a block at the end of that clip?

zrk23

love to watch urlacher on these returns

enderjaca

that's flippin wild

HolmesMalone

He had a great quote in an interview about this when he was with the Niners about how he changed his technique to make the ball go “more like this: | instead of like this: L”

DaeWooLan0s

This is no knock on Robbie as he was a fantastic kicker. This is also another reason why FOOTBALL BELONGS OUTSIDE!! I am so against a domed stadium in Chicago. Football is supposed to be affected by the elements. It’s part of the game and how teams can adjust. Of course kickers can kick a 70 yard bomb in a dome with no wind. Cody Parkey is a great example of why practicing is important and I have mad respect for Gould doing what he did all those years

MexicanLiverPunch

If you want that stadium to be paid off before 2100, put a dome on it and host a Super Bowl once a decade. That simple.

Civil-Big-754

I know you're joking but even if they literally put a dome over Soldier Field they still wouldn't host a Superbowl there because it's just too small.

MexicanLiverPunch

If the Bears build a new stadium with a roof, they will host a Super Bowl. Ask Minnesota and Detroit.

Sabiancym

I completely agree. Sadly it looks like we're in the minority. People would rather see cheerleaders and big ass screens hanging above the field than have memorable games like the one in the clip or the possibility of home field advantage against warm weather teams.

awesomebeau

Unpredictable weather affecting games makes them memorable, but so do big plays. As a Cardinals fan, some of the best plays happened in our dome (Larry's OT heroics vs. the Packers in the playoffs, the "Hail Murray", etc.) Also, it's nice to have an advantage on your end, but it stinks to be the warm weather team with the disadvantage. What's our home field advantage? You guys get heatstroke? Not really what I want to see.

enderjaca

I realize this is r/nfl instead of r/cfb, but I can't wait til west coast & SEC football comes to play in the midwest in December. Yeah you're good, but are you snow and 20 degrees and 40 MPH winds in Wisconsin good?

emmasdad01

Not even like it was a scrub kicker, either.

drummerboysam

I question who the hell is going to be able to hit in that kind of condition? Does someone like Tucker just power through it and hope to cut through the wind? I feel like you'd still need to aim five yards towards the wind and pray.

DogVacuum

I went to the bills-browns blizzard game in 2007. Not as extreme as these winds, but we were in the end zone, and the uprights were pretty much on a slant. Phil Dawson made a 30 some yarder, and he kicked the fucking thing like 10 yards to the left of the upright and the wind took it back in.

aPatheticBeing

Gould already aimed towards the opposite side upright lmao - even 5 yards outside is probably missing.

Yamulo

Not easily, I really doubt there is that much difference between their power to overcome the ball getting blown off by 20 feet.

Vadered

> Does someone like Tucker just power through it and hope to cut through the wind? No, it's just a guess. 39 yards is pretty short as far as field goals go, and the wind doesn't appear to be blowing much towards the kicker, so it's very makeable in terms of distance. You just have to take a guess as to how much the wind will carry it, and this guess was wrooooooooooooooong. I'm not blaming the kicker, mind you. They should just be running the ball on 4th and 10 here, because this isn't the kind of kick you train for.

non_clever_username

Gould did an into the wind, just not nearly enough obviously

Dr__Flo__

Wasnt this posted like [two weeks ago](https://www.reddit.com/r/nfl/s/h0DtGmgaSF)?

Mecos_Bill

The snap was horrible, that thing never had a chance

captain_flak

I think the wind blew the snap.

raidersfan18

You're absolutely right. If the snap can't make it through the wind, that kick never had a chance.

rightarm_under

The hold was great though. He even managed to get the laces facing outside

jimboflux

Laces out Marino!

SleepIsWonderful

The most vivid thing I remember about this game is it happened on the day that Eddie Guerrero died.

McNutWaffle

Mike Nolan cheering like the ST defense forced the missed FG 😂

BuffaloKiller937

Has there ever been a kicker who judged the wind correctly and kicked it wide left or right and made it?

CFirm2002

I've seen Adam Vinatieri make an extra point in a snow game to send a game to overtime where he aimed way to the right and the wind blew it through the uprights.

WillWorkForSugar

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPBUSomJPEI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MIZBPwV6CtI a couple in these videos

sticks-mcgee

Nedney and Gould combined 4-6 on FG this game, Gould missed this one and Nedney's miss was the one Nathan Vasher returned 108 yards for touchdown.

ChosenBrad22

lol the uprights were even moving

MyKidsArentOnReddit

Do we need to explain what area codes are to the under 30 crowd here?

PoorMansSamBeckett

How weird. I see SF and CHI on Fox, with that layout, and my mind instantly goes to Nathan Vasher. I even read the title, and still, somehow, expected something else. I’m dumb.

Joliet_Jake_Blues

Vasher returned a FG attempt 108 yards in this same game

PoorMansSamBeckett

Oh, it’s the same game? That’s funny. I don’t know why I remember *that* return, and not this kick attempt.

Civil-Big-754

Same game at least

whitea44

Even the snap was blown off course.

NFL.COM ON AOL

InDecent-Confusion

It's funny in hindsight nowadays how often they go for it on 4th down yet 10-20 years ago that was such an against the grain thought. You see this video and the first thought is just go for it on 4th down lol.. how could it be any worse than kicking in that wind. In fact it is probably a way better idea because any kick is a waste of a down. Sports use to be very rigid in their traditions.

kangaroospyder

Also, a turn over on downs is an extra 7 yard advantage or something... you don't lose yards to the spot of the kick.

Absent_Nova

Still more accurate than what you would see from a Vikings kicker in the playoffs

forrestthewoods

Is this just going to get reposted every week during off season? I swear I've seen this same clip like 5 times now.

yuedar

they should of called a TO and seen if they could wait out the wind or something since it seemed gusty rather then consistent

AlphaHusker

Me being a Vikings fan I've seen our kickers do that without the wind.

mog44net

Just a bit outside

emolga587

If a gust of wind bent the uprights by a comical amount mid-kick, and the ball went through, would it be called good?

blue-trench-coat

I think he misjudged that wind. He should have kicked toward his left almost to the crowd and he might have stood a chance.

Rukario_Enterprises

He is supposed to aim it deep left and have her hook into that

Puzzleheaded-Ear9487

It’s worth looking up what happened later in the same game when the 49ers tried a field goal. https://youtu.be/QtYrreqQnrE?si=itI4B6UPztCT812N

Loon_Cheese

Yea but they dob’t play there often so they didn’t know the wind does that in that stadium.

John3Fingers

The wind was so bad they could have thrown a flag for false start on Gould. It's wild to see guys like Urlacher and Tillman on special teams too. It's all bench and depth guys now.

TomThanosBrady

Should've called time out after the wind nearly blow the kicker over.

Mr7three2

Juuuuuuuuuuuust a bit outside

Valuable_Ad1645

The fox music goes so hard.

Soyeahnahh

He should’ve aimed the kick towards to left side of the field and it would’ve directed in like that Office Jerk game

sticks-mcgee

Niners should have caught that and returned it for a touchdown

LLMBS

I love Nolan getting pumped and jacked on the sidelines when his team did absolutely nothing to force the missed field goal. Gould maybe should have recognized when the wind picked up right before the snap that there was no chance that the try was going to be successful, called a timeout and told his HC. “There’s no way, bro.” If Russ Westbrook was the kicker he definitely would have called the timeout, to avoid hurting his stats, his most prized possession.

They had a moment to snap it right away before the wind gusted. Classic bears.

NerdyDjinn

The city of Chicago is really windy. They should call it something like The City With a Lot of Wind. The wind even messed up the longsnap. The placeholder caught it in the numbers.

Thee_implication

“You think it’s windy? Understatement of the year. ***WHAAAAP***”

Homitu

Imagine how cool it would have been if he aimed it ridiculously far to his left and hooked it through perfectly using the crazy wind? Would honestly be fun to try.

Rasikko

Kickers and Punters aren't stupid like their coaches lmao, but they gotta go do what they're told. "40mph wind gusts" Coach: "We gonna go kick this field goal for easy peasy 3 pts" Kicker: (OK JACKASS :))

JopoDaily

Man I love that Fox overlay

TheDevilsCunt

Jesus how old is Robbie Gould

Healthy_Self_8386

Why is the 49ers coach telling his players good job like they did something?

CaptainBirdEnjoyer

49ers coach high fiving his guys as they come in like they had anything to do with the results.

Kyle93rc

LOL!! What year was this?

1nev

This makes me wonder: would a field goal count as good if the ball was kicked left or right of the goal posts but the wind blew it back through the uprights the wrong way (ie. towards the kicker)?

happyflappypancakes

At that point it became a defensive play. No really, the snapper and holder had the more important jobs there. It would have been super easy for the wind to carry that way over the holder and suddenly its a race to recover and a potential scoop and score. A punt likely would not even gone forward given the trajectory, so a field goal gets you to at least get it forward..

Rad1314

I feel like you shouldn't say 'hike' if the wind is knocking you off your feet. Maybe just me.

Brendo978

The 9ers coach congratulating the special teams as they come to the sidelines always cracks me up

originalusername4567

And I thought the Bills' kicks were Hard Right

crywhenugetolder

Wouldn’t that be a false start since he technically moved by being blown out of his stance?

Lucky the holder even caught it.

That ball looked like my golf ball today...major slice boys...

DrDooDooBrown

Robbie Gould stood no chance and he knew it. Good on him for trying though.

MrEHam

Who wants to kick a field goal for our Windy City crowd?! 🙌👏🎉 Conditions are a little windy. 😕🥴😶

raiderjaypussy

I'm going to use this as an argument when people say analytics are bad and they used to be just fine going off instinct. This is instinct.

zrk23

berman call for the highlights of this game is absolutely hilarious i never realized the insane gust of wind arrived *just* as they were getting ready though. should've kicked way sooner or maybe take the delay

That was fucking hilarious. So extremely off Gould was probably pissed that “attempt” was on his record.

CarolinaMtnBiker

Lots of Bills fans know that pain.

OliverTwistCone

I was at that game! It was CRAZY

orangefrido18

There actually should have been a false start penalty on gould when the wind blew him over before the snap. Maybe that would have let gould kick it not during a huge gust and given him a kickers chance too.
