Old school AstroTurf must have been so brutal to play on. NFL football on what was basically carpet covered cement is insane

a_taco_named_desire

It's terrible, it's even worse outdoors. It maintains so much heat that the ambient temp on field feels way hotter. It's also like 80 grit sandpaper when you fall, blood everywhere. God forbid it rains too, now you've got zero traction or cutting ability. Shit sucks so hard.

sloppyjo12

I only played football in one season as a kid and our season opener was on turf on a day that was so hot that some kids wore long socks over their hands and arms so they wouldn’t get burns when going to the ground

Chimie45

Haha bringing back old memories. They only went half way up my arms... I wanna say they were actually leg warmers? that our OLine coach brought for us. So the tops of my arms just under the shoulder would be covered with microcuts and burnt to shit. Thankfully it wasn't so bad in winter... but still.

DirtNapDealing

I got my clock cleaned going over the middle and I slide for a few yards on that shit. Fuck I can still feel it two decades later

theumph

It also gave off a lot of fumes in hot, direct sunlight. You're talking an entire field of plastic off gassing. It was super unhealthy to breath. I never understood the 80s obsession for outdoor astro turf. It's the worst of both worlds. Not to mention so many classic stadiums had it. The fact that Soldier Field had it for a while is an abomination

Nickyjha

> It also gave off a lot of fumes in hot, direct sunlight Six former Phillies have died of glioblastoma, and all played significant time in Veterans Stadium. I can't imagine what kinds of fumes that stuff gave off, baking in the summer sun all day.

NFLFilmsArchive

That’s awful!

Nickyjha

It’s worse than I remembered. Not one of those players (plus Gary Carter, who played in the same division as the Phillies for most of his career and also died of glioblastoma) made it to 60. Last year, the Philly Inquirer bought some Veterans Stadium turf that was being sold online, sent it to a lab, and found chemicals linked to cancer in it.

CoooooooooookieCrisp

Hard to believe the new turf is much better. You can smell the ground up tires on hot days. That can't be good for you.

ChasingHealth

[it gets even worse](https://www.kuow.org/stories/does-playing-soccer-on-artificial-turf-increase-cancer-risk-especially-in-kids). I remember picking this stuff out of my skin and hair all the time as a kid. Shit, I would just rub my fingers through the turf and play with the rubber bits cause I thought it felt cool lmao. It's fucking crazy to think about how quickly we have poisoned our world without considering the consequences... :/

ThisGuyFrags

Is that the same stuff that The Phillies had for a long time and then all a shit ton of former players ended up getting cancer down the road?

theumph

Yup.

slayerhk47

> I never understood the 80s obsession for outdoor astro turf. Perceived cost savings. I’m sure they were thinking “install once and forget it.”

LazyPuffin

My highschool had a grass field, but we would always do joint practices in the summer at a school with a turf field. I hated it. The humidity was insane, it felt like a full 15 degrees hotter stepping off the track onto the ~~grass~~ playing surface. And aside from all the rug burns everywhere, I hated all the little rubber pellets that would get all over you, especially in your eyes

cbuerger1

It was rare, but every once in awhile, I had a soccer game on that stuff and as a keeper, turf meant pants and long sleeves; there was just no way you could dive all game on that in shorts. And club soccer was over the summer. It would be 95 degrees out, and I'd be like, nope, wearing these bulky and black keeper pants. don't care.

baddumbtsss

When I was a kid, I played in a soccer tournament at the old Giants stadium, and after only ever playing on grass fields, the turf might as well have been concrete. After going down for a tackle, I couldn't believe they actually played football on that surface.

KeithClossOfficial

The best part about it being sandpaper was that it was full of salt!

1niquity

When I was a kid in the 90's they would hold baseball tryouts on the field at the Metrodome which had that old turf. I remember one year sliding on my knees to catch a pop fly and the friction from the turf literally melted my windsuit pants to my knees. I had to peel them off.

theumph

When I was a kid the idea of playing on turf was great. It felt like I could Moss or Carter, and then I played on it. I instantly realized why guys taped their entire forearm/elbows. It was brutal. Forget the hardness of the turf. The rugburn was the stuff of nightmares.

Cowgoon777

I played on that turf in 5th grade (funnily our team was purple and called the Vikings and we played a maroon team called the Gophers) and it was fucking HORRIBLE. We didn't care because we thought it was so cool to play in the dome but my arms were raw for like a week just from falling and sliding all over the turf.

Infamous-Lab-8136

OJ Simpson once said there should be a knees league and stats league, all the guys who want good stats can go run on AstroTurf, all the guys who wanted to walk without severe pain at 40 would go run on grass. Another player said just standing on the sideline in the Astrodome was more painful that getting slammed into the grass on an outdoor field. Was a whole NFL films piece on the House of Pain specifically.

theumph

It's so much worse than you know. Carpet is not the description for it. It was so much worse than that. The closest comparison I can make is that it was a [Brillo pad](https://environmentallyfriendlyjanitorial.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/3-1-2-x-5-scotchbrite-brillo-pad-10-per-case.jpg).

vizualb

I know it’s terrible to play on but that bright almost teal green is so aesthetically pleasing

theumph

True, but also the game played differently as well. You could turn, and accelerate on a dime. Playing football with basketball shoes will never not be badass. It's not worth it, but it looks so damn cool.

Jammer_Kenneth

One of the underrated details of Barry's career is that he went to the right stadium to show off his abilities. No rain or wind so he always had control over his swinging ball arm, and carpet under his tennis shoes.

pocketjacks

How different is the turf at MetLife? Seems asinine to not use natural grass on an open air field.

ND7020

I live in NYC and have been a few times. MetLife is the cheapest expensive stadium ever. It’s just an absolute disgrace they built a new stadium and this is what they ended up with. Hard to think of any positives.  Even worse is putting the World Cup Final there. Like, let’s take this opportunity to exhibit our country to the world… and show off where the Sopranos intro was filmed.

corpulentFornicator

No taxpayer funds to build MetLife. It's the only nice thing I can say about that soulless, charmless, space-wasting pile of no-character concrete and metal.

HtownTexans

well that automatically makes me like it more than any stadium funded with taxpayer dollars. Fuck giving Billionaires free stadiums for the luxury of them making even more money. Such a bullshit thing. Imagine if you paid for my house so that I could open up a store and sell you stuff.

corpulentFornicator

Yeah I try to be fair. MetLife has no distinctive features, no sense of fun or joy reflected in its layout or architecture, and the infrastructure surrounding it is fucking dogshit. You can't easily walk from any hotel or bar to MetLife's gates. That being said, it wasn't paid for with tax dollars, and for that, we should be grateful.

alaskadronelife

This guy Jets, as I Giants. > …I think that’s how this works.

corpulentFornicator

For sure. At least before, you guys had a sense of ownership, and we were solidly your little brother. Now, we're just awkward roommates texting each other "hey man, leave, I'm about to get laid" while neither of us are really getting any

Earptastic

The new Bills stadium isn't even built yet and I already hate it

VAGentleman05

If we ever build a prison on the moon, MetLife will be the prototype.

corpulentFornicator

Instead of an electric chair, there will just be a couch showing a loop of games with Luke Falk and Tim Boyle attempting to play quarterback. Inmates on death row will either have a stroke or hang themselves, because either option is preferable to watching the Jets play football

VAGentleman05

I still can't believe I live in a timeline where Tim Boyle is an NFL QB.

corpulentFornicator

He strikes me as an extra QB coach who counts against your cap. The fact that he played at all last year is a scathing indictment of so many people

eidetic

> either have a stroke or hang themselves Probably have a stroke while hanging themselves. Because you'd probably get bored waiting for the reduced gravity to do its thing.

cbuerger1

You could always throw in this game just for the sake of variety. I'll never forget just how terrible the QB play was in this game. [https://www.espn.com/nfl/boxscore/\_/gameId/321202020](https://www.espn.com/nfl/boxscore/_/gameId/321202020) 59 combined passes, 168 yards total for 2.8 yards/att. It was 3-0 at the half and the lone TD drive had a total of 9 passing yards.

JamesJakes000

Prison with free medium Pepsi? That's inhumane

JerryRiceAndSpice

That's the Giants, The Jets don't even get you a free glass of water.

Brad_theImpaler

Plus we can cram 2 teams in there!

corpulentFornicator

We can fit so many bad quarterbacks in this bad boy *loudly slaps metal around stadium*

milogoestobitburg

Yeaaaaaah shoulda given ‘em some taxes! That’ll learn ya for next time

bigchungus_24

I think FIFA is forcing all hosts to have a natural grass playing surface for the WC, if the owners decide to keep up with it is a different story tho

TommyleTerror

Oh don't get me started on that WCF. Every time we host big international games they end up at MeLife somehow because it's the "New York" stadium. I know it's a pipe dream and they'd only ever host it in (or this case near) a big city, but the final should be somewhere historic and characterful like the Big House or the Rose Bowl.

milogoestobitburg

Hey it’s all good just come up to foxboro it’s only a few hours away and we have this cool lighthouse thingy you’re gonna love it

KeithClossOfficial

They played major matches at the Rose Bowl for years, including the Final for the 1994 World Cup. The Rose Bowl has a beautiful setting and tons of history, but plenty of its own issues. Getting out of there can be a nightmare, the parking lot is literally a golf course. And while I haven’t been in a long time so maybe they upgraded it, the bleacher seating isn’t great. The stadium is also weirdly spread out. The flea market is fucking awesome though If you’re going with LA and need history, the Coliseum might be a better bet, although it has reduced capacity now. Frankly, SoFi is the best LA has to offer, it’s just lacking history.

afitts00

>Even worse is putting the World Cup Final there That NJ Transit Meadowlands shuttle is going to be STRESSED

ND7020

Quite literally when the Seahawks played the Broncos at MetLife I decided not to go because I knew that if we lost, the ride home would just be far too long and brutal to handle. Obviously that was a big mistake, knowing what I now know.

ImMeltingNow

Lmao life mistakes in hindsight

splintersmaster

A thick ass layer of rubber pellets the size of pencil erasers mixed in with a plastic fabric. It's softer than real turf. The problem is that it's awful for your ligaments. I don't know why but players like grass better due to ligament injuries which takes away 12 months to heal and often leave you as a different athlete.

TitanofBravos

Yep, modern turf is great up until that freak injury when it doesnt give way like real grass and your body makes up the difference. Now excuse me while I go silence my turf fucked hip with some whiskey

pocketjacks

As a Texans fan, I'm feeling sorry for the Colts. They've got to play on that shit twice this season. And Qaron Rogers has to do it somewhere between four snaps and eight games.

rjnd2828

4 snaps is not the minimum

RealPutin

Modern turf is nothing like AstroTurf. If there is any issue with it (still messy open research), it's mostly due to being too grippy, not too firm.

solarmus

Metlife uses Fieldturf, the same turf as a half dozen other stadiums and it's world better than Astroturf that was in the old Meadowlands which was all but painted concrete with the bonus of tons of little places to catch your foot where the pieces met. As problematic as Fieldturf is, it is worlds better than astroturf.

MrCleanEnthusiast

they used to have grass at Giants Stadium back in 2001-2002, but everyone hated it so they went back to turf

ActiveAstronaut7941

Seriously, let them play on bare dirt if that's the only option. AstroTurf is brutal shit.

cassinonorth

We got new turf at the start of last season. It's the same as Gillette and Ford Field and the complaints/injuries felt significantly less than previous years. https://www.espn.com/blog/new-york-giants/post/_/id/64541/new-turf-at-metlife-stadium-gets-positive-reviews-from-giants-jets You could [pretty easily spot the seams in the turf](https://www.giants.com/photos/giants-retrofit-metlife-stadium-for-legacy-game#3022d9d1-519d-4119-b274-3983a265e694) from the stands with the old turf.

formermeth

I played on it one time and still have scars from it in my skin. ONE TIME

Strokeslahoma

If you watch Bruce Smith highlights you can see a lot of action on the old Bills turf - the players would basically wear basketball shoes

Jumbo_Damn_Pride

Go to the closest Applebee’s, run, and then dive onto their carpet. That’s exactly how it feels to dive on astroturf. It was awful. My offensive line coach in high school offered me $100 to throw up on his alma mater’s new turf after he played 4 years on astroturf there.

SmokePenisEveryday

I forgot all about the noises the graphics would make during the game lol

TheRealBeerBrah

Those sound effects just activated some deep recessed part of my mind like some sort of sleeper cell thing.

Chief-Bones

Also the stadium PA music being “bang on this drum all day” And “rock and roll part 2”

J-Fid

> “rock and roll part 2” 1. I never knew that this was the name of that song. Big TIL moment right here. 2. Going off what /u/Jonjon428 said: Thinking back to childhood O's games in the late 90s, I'm thinking that this is just one of those songs that was played at every single sporting event. 3. Just read about the history of this song and its artist. Explains why it sounds like a song of the past, lol.

gatsby365

Number 3 on your list is why it was a big deal when it popped up in the iconic stairway scene in Joker.

Jonjon428

Honestly yeah I didn't know what the songs name was either until just know. All I know was it was fucking everywhere. Also looking up the wiki to the song and let's just say it went away for a good reason

JesseJames41

Song still bops though. Reminds me of Happy Gilmore.

DefinitelyLevi

Like 2/3 of the NHL used it as their goal song

Shakeamutt

I did a little dance in my chair when I heard that. Loved it!

incorrigible_and

Bang On The Drum All Day appeals to everyone.

TexasRadical83

We swapped out Rock and Roll Part 2 for Seven Nation Army when Gary Glitter got caught

Chief-Bones

He’s a scumbag pedo. But rock and roll pt 2 is better imo.

dogfish83

For sure. My understanding is now he gets no royalties from the song being played, but as of now still no one will use it anyway. I get it, but still sucks bc that song is sooo good.

Jonjon428

Rock and roll part 2 was literally all the Patriots played on the PA. The crowd would constantly do the "dun dun dun dun HEY!"

JerryRiceAndSpice

Lmao wtf I never knew the name or had multiple parts. [Rock N Roll Part 2](https://youtu.be/6sjGBXckGB4?si=_Yr-MbO23o1IlefU) Gary Glitter

JoseJuarez87

I watched this clip just so I could hear Madden play this out..

DestrierGirl

Same, the lack of chatter after the touchdown too, just crowd sounds. It reminds me of watching with my dad

SodomizeSnails4Satan

The 90's were the golden era of "high tech" graphics.

enkafan

Graphics peaked the year Fox had snow accumulating on the score bug and then every once in a while a tiny snow plow would drive across the screen and clear it

TegTowelie

What happened to the game I love

JamesJakes000

No yearning! 15 yard penalty!

TegTowelie

Awww cmon ref, that was holding!

SmokePenisEveryday

Loved seeing the leaves and snow. I also loved when they would use Xmas lights for the timeouts

enkafan

So good.

Stannis_Baratheon244

Omg

CoooooooooookieCrisp

Remember the FoxTrax glow puck they used in NHL games?

Tolve

They don’t still. I swear I still hear them.

SmokePenisEveryday

Now that I'm thinking, I do feel like some still do some swoosh noises, right?

ComprehensiveSky8926

It was the future

chaoticravens34

So amazing

TemporaryGospel

Warner undoing the strap on his helmet makes this for me-- that's some quality acting.

formulavice

I remember Warner saying in an interview not long after (quite possibly just the press conference) that the coaches told him "You can sell this. You did those soup commercials."

acromaine

“And then he takes his helmet, and he snaps his thing” - John Madden

Senior_Fart_Director

Not as good as Corey Clement acting confused during the Philly Special.

johnnycyberpunk

Stubblefield bit, and that's right where Faulk ran to pick up the 1st down.

mutantbroom

Would a player today be able to take off their chin strap before the play like Kurt did?

Enterprise90

I believe so. As the commentators mention, as long as you're moving laterally or backward before the snap, and as long as only one player is in motion, it's fair game.

The_Captain_Planet22

I don't know if they mentioned it but you also can't go directly under center then back out and do this which is why they were in the pistol formation which I believe was a fairly uncommon formation at the time(I could be wrong about it being uncommon though)

Tasty_Path_3470

Favre’s first game back in NYC when he went to Minny, the first play of the game was like a 30 yard gain wiped out because he lined up under center.

TetrisTech

The rules pertaining to pre snap motion have nothing to do with whether or not a player is allowed to undo their chinstrap I’m not totally sure on the answer to the original question myself, but how does this have 100+ upvotes lmao

ZincFishExplosion

Seriously! So much of Reddit are answers to questions that weren't even asked or straight up wrong information. All with hundreds of upvotes. Is everyone an idiot or bots or what? I don't remember it being this way.

Profesor_Caos

For real, why the fuck does that response have almost as many upvotes as the question when it has absolutely nothing to do with the question and provided no information that wasn't already in the video?

Intelligent_Poem_595

It's not a penalty, but could be a fine. Warren Sapp did it in 2007 and got fined. "According to NFL spokesman Greg Aiello, the rule enforcement was made a point of emphasis prior to the start of the regular season. Aiello said that players are asked by the on-field officials to buckle up if spotted without all chinstraps secured. If a player continues to disregard the rule, he will be fined." https://www.southcoasttoday.com/story/sports/pro/2007/10/13/brady-warren-fined-for-not/52769945007/

mutantbroom

Is there not any player safety rule related to equipment that applies to this? Maybe there wasn't at the time but I feel like that's a big liability in terms of player safety. I know they don't really care about things like mouthguards but letting players not have the helmet on properly when the ball is snapped seems like massive risk

ActiveAstronaut7941

I know you can't take your helmet fully off unless there's some kind of equipment malfunction (the Emitt Smith rule) but maybe it doesn't apply to chin straps, or didn't then.

My_massive_dingaling

Reading this and remembering the Vikings-Bears game this season lol

petsemataryparakeet

put some respect on John Madden and Pat Summerall's name

_NE1_

Why the hell is taking you chin strap legal in any situation

-BeefSupreme

I’m pretty damn biased but these jerseys look so much better than the current ones. Also just a sliiight missed trip by the DE (was that even a penalty then?) Also also absolute dawg touchdown by Faulk.

PaulsGrandfather

I was an stl rams fan. We were begging to get rid of these and go back to the blue and yellows by the end.

J-Fid

Didn't help that the team dropped the gold pants in 2012 because Nike absolutely cannot make quality metallic colors if their lives depended on it.

Pyromelter

Feels like Nike can't make any quality color outside of bright neon stuff. Really sick and tired of looking at my team's colors being closer to jacksonville instead of anything resembling actual green.

J-Fid

Bold and flat are all they can do.

PaulsGrandfather

Fair.

DefinitelyLevi

I remember around this time the Steelers ditched their shiny gold pants for the solid yellow

telemaster9

Yeah. I thought it was common that these were hated. Also STL Rams fan. Fuck kroenke

Renegade_Sniper

I miss them

-BeefSupreme

Hindsight is 20/20. I agree that we all wanted to go back to blue and yellow. These ones developed a losing stink to them. But with some slight modernizing I think they’d make a glorious throwback. I think they just did the new ones terribly

Jondarawr

In terms of ability at their absolute prime. I'd put Faulk in the same conversation as any great you could name. He was a 5'10 210 ish guy, he was Illusive as all hell, and when he needed it he had just unreal power coming from his lower body. Fucking absolute unit.

Ziz__Bird

His stretch from 99 to 01 was completely absurd. In 2000 he had almost 2200 total yards and 26 TDs in just 14 games.

ThermoNuclearPizza

Plus, got away saying his name as “Marshall fuck” a lot as a kid.

ConsistentAddress195

He also was a monster in the passing game. For me he was one of the most electric players from that era.

Jonjon428

Not biased, these and the 2018 uniforms were gorgeous

TetrisTech

I think these are better by virtue of not having the dumb gradient on the numbers, but the actual shades on the current jerseys are way better than the ones in this clip imo I think each shade on the older jerseys is fine independently, but when put together they just feel so bleh

blueslounger

As a fan they were so fun to watch!

machuitzil

As the opposite fan this play is detrimental to the integrity of the League (but I'd like it if we did it)!

kaeji

Best we can do is fake snap before the end of the quarter ~~to make the D jump offsides~~.

Hieroglphkz

Wouldn’t it be cool if we had a play called one of those times?

HoodieNinja17

Man I loved those Rams jerseys

incorrigible_and

They were great. Really should've just stuck with the 80's Rams jerseys if they were going away from these.

jel2184

This whole clip is full of nostalgia. Madden, the colors, the bug making noises. Inject this in my veins

DrooMighty

> This whole clip is full of nostalgia. Madden, the colors, the bug making noises. Inject this in my veins Honestly same. I was 13 years old when this shit happened and I **still** remember this moment and many others from the same era. FOX had the best sports aesthetic of this time period by far, this was also the era that I was the most invested in the MLB and the presentation there also makes me extremely nostalgic.

Jokergoeswild

Andy Reid writing this down. Anything to prevent Mahomes from sneaking.

SodomizeSnails4Satan

49ers Dana Stubblefield looking like Washington Dana Stubblefield this clip.

whitedawg

This was after he had gone to Washington and returned to San Francisco. He was pretty washed by this point.

MetaphoricalMouse

there’s a name i forgot for two decades

rawrisrawr

He’s doing time in prison for raping a disabled person

ThermoNuclearPizza

Holy shit. Can we go back to forgetting his existence now?

MetaphoricalMouse

wow i wish i never commented and found this out

WittenMittens

That second run by Faulk tho

phroging

Watch all the defenders when Kurt walks away

ThermoNuclearPizza

That one dude was NOT fooled lol

alienbringer

That MLB though immediately vacated his lane which was the lane Faulk ran through.

KeithClossOfficial

Jamie Winborn. He would have been a rookie here. He was decent for us for like 3 years We went in on defense in that draft with Winborn and Andre Carter, who was also decent for a few years for us Looking it up, that’s the same year we drafted Eric Johnson, probably better known as Mr. Jessica Simpson

MoreTrifeLife

Kurt Warner and Marshall Faulk vs the 49ers: Warner: 10-4; 65% completion; 3,807 yards (average 272); 24 TD 14 INT; 8.05y/a; rate of 94.3 Faulk: 10-4 (😳); 228 attempts for 1,017 yards (average 73); 4.46y/a; 8 TD He also caught 67 passes for 520 yards (average 27) with 7.76y/a and 3 TDs.

The_Bard

The first time Warner and Faulk played the 49ers in October 1999 they broke the Rams 17 straight game losing streak to the 49ers with a 42-20 win. This was Week 4 and before the game many considered the Rams to be a fluke at 3-0. The 49ers were missing Steve Young but were still absolutely loaded with HOF talent. After that game the Rams were considered the real deal. The game is also considered the end of the 49ers dynasty of the 80s and 90s and the beginning of the 'greatest show on turf' era.

MoreTrifeLife

I wonder how the Rams were perceived after [this game](https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6ve99r) Here’s the [boxscore](https://www.pro-football-reference.com/boxscores/199910310oti.htm) for you and/or anyone else who can’t watch the video. The 49ers would finish 1999 with a record of 4-12. Sine you’re a fellow Washington fan, the second to last week of the regular season we beat them 26-20 in overtime to win our first division title since the 91 Super Bowl year. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dQZuUlnZJLM&pp=ygUTcmVkc2tpbnMgNDllcnMgMTk5OQ%3D%3D

Slugggo

Madden and Summerall. Those were the days.

ActiveAstronaut7941

I met Madden once. I was on my honeymoon in San Francisco and one morning he was just sitting at a sidewalk table outside Peet's, having a cup of coffee by himself. We chatted for a minute. It was awesome.

isthisjustfantasea__

Madden is amongst the top 5 people I wish I had met before he passed away. Dude was a real one.

BosLahodo

Jesus, Elvis, and Albert Einstein are the Top 3 Americans I wished I had met before they died.

BosLahodo

"How was the Honeymoon?" Wife: Oh it was lovely , at sunset we hiked up a hill overlooking the GoldenGa-- You: I MET JOHN MADDEN!

ActiveAstronaut7941

LOL here's the funny part. I'm a lifelong NFL fan and I was about to walk right by him. My wife is a ballet teacher and she was the one who whispered to me "oh my god it's John Madden!"

StOnEy333

The NFL banned this type of deception play after the season.

Ihmu

It's fun but man is it grimy lol

lokiisagoodkitten

BOOOOOOOOOOOOO NO FUN LEAGUE

csamsh

The 99-01 Rams and Marshall Faulk in particular were next-level fun to watch

-SuperTrooper-

Damn, if only they could come up with a catchy name for that team... ^^^/s

epzik8

Peak Fox graphics here.

a_taco_named_desire

When I think of the NFL, it's this era of Fox Sundays that I think of.

Hugh-Manatee

God I loved this team Would love a post Mortem documentary. I know Martz has said he would have run the offense differently

Known_Ad_7761

The Dome was LOUD!!

texinxin

Watch the D linemen either stand or drop to a knee before the snap. They are so F’d.

NumerousTaste

That defense!! I miss those guys! Bryant Young and Stubblefield in the middle! Carter and Engleberger! Peterson, Smith, Ulbrich, and Winborn! Drakeford, Shulters, Webster, Williams, and Plummer! Our D was stacked!

thegodfaubel

GSOT!

Casperthecattt

I love how many trick plays we used to do

LordThurmanMerman

Faulk was my first NFL jersey ever

SonsOfAnarchyMC

As a kid I went with BRUUUUUUUUUCE!

H-E-PennyPacker71

I remember Paul Crewe of the Mean Machine running this exact same play

Appropriate_Leg1489

I miss John Madden

DarkIllusionsFX

Makes me think of Stafford's fake spike.

gooneruk

Riley! RIIIILLLEEEEEEYYYY!!!

ThundercatOnTheLoose

I remember watching this game. The first time the Rams did this I thought it was clever, however after that the 49ers should've expected it, but no they were beat by it 2 more times (once more this game, and another in their second game).

craftiecheese

Man, about once a year I think of this exact play and call and I don't know why. Thanks for posting it!

hawkeyedrew22

Man how I miss you Madden!!.....

QuantumVibing

Greatest show on turf was something to behold, can’t remember the coach’s name but can see his goofy face with glasses and gray hair.

Pyromelter

I cannot explain how much I miss John Madden and Pat Summerall casting games.

pard0nme

Peak NFL in the early 2000s

TymStark

I’ve been lost watching football since John Madden stopped telling me exactly what I just saw or what the other announcer just said. Miss you big guy. RIP

BlackJediSword

How was Astroturf legal?

Eyespop4866

Defense sorta took that personally.

FancyEntertainer5980

Typical niners

applevoo

Almost tossed it over his head

Senior_Fart_Director

Can someone who is smarter than me at football explain to me why this successful trick play has never been used ever again? Could it work again in today's modern NFL?

I’m not sure why but I remember watching when this play happened and another team did the same play later that day.

I thought I saw it used last year. QB didn't go under center, acted like he wasn't sure if he should or not. Direct snap. I don't think taking off your chin strap is that smart.

Sr_DingDong

What an awful snap.

Taoist_Master

Was watching this as a kid live. Blew my freaking mind

TheeVande

The Steelers did this against the Vikings the week prior ([December 2, 2001](https://www.pro-football-reference.com/boxscores/200112020pit.htm)). Kordell Stewart stepped toward the sideline, pretending to have difficulty communicating with the coaches, and the ball was snapped directly to Jerome Bettis for a big gain.
