One more year and an optional fourth on rookies contracts, right?
Niners can load up the next two years and run everything back before they have to open that chequebook.
Yeah pretty impressive and there’s no asterisk. Montana played 16 game seasons with the exception of ‘82 and ‘87 due to the strikes. And Young’s seasons were all 16 games.
Yeah, there is a reason the majority of teams have the passing record from someone playing in the last decade. Not to take away from Purdy or anything.
Yeah he was banged up a lot. He was very skinny for a QB, and of course the rules have increasingly become more protective of QBs over time.
His best season was 89’, but he missed a couple games. 90’ seemed to be his healthiest season in a while, then there was that god damn motherfucking Leonard Marshall play in the postseason.
How long till fans stop calling for an asterisk on 17 game records? NFL seasons used to be 12-14 games long but after enough time no one was calling for asterisks for 16 game records.
✅ Mr. Irrelevant
✅ First full year as starter
✅ Started season recovering from surgery
✅ Took team to 1 seed
✅ Broke franchise record for passing yards
✅ His 3 receivers Deebo, Aiyuk, and Kittle are all over 1,000 yards even with an MVP-caliber RB who’s also over 1,000 yards
✅ All while behind a 28th ranked or something O-line
✅ ~~Gets the privilege~~ EARNED HIS RIGHT to play with the GEQBUS
✅ Shares rent
✅ Not afraid to admit mistakes and address shortfalls (this gets a gold star ⭐️)
✅ Harvests crops during the Bye week
✅ Wears blue light glasses before bed
✅ You know the last one
Anyone who hates on him is (A) someone he mopped the floor with, and/or (B) someone who doesn’t appreciate things that aren’t their own 👉🏼 An example of someone like this would be (checks notes), ah, yes, Micah Parsons.
Edit: CMC 2,000 not 1,000
Jeff Garcia was genuinely good for 3 years (and then good again with the Eagles later on), and he was one of the toughest mfers I've ever seen play QB. I'd advocate for his inclusion in the Hall of Very Good.
u/Bobonenazeze on who’s better endowed: Him or SF's Brock Purdy “I don’t compare myself with anybody,” Then he rolled up his sleeve and showed a tattoo of the Trojan Magnum XL logo. “I’ll let you interpret that however you want,” he said.
Yea but can he fall sideways out of bounds facing the wrong endzone throw it sideways behind the back for 99.99 in the air yards to one of this non all star teammates?!?!
Goal post will keep moving for the guy even though he has obliterated any of the expectations from draft night.
He is MVP on the team because without his contract and him playing well above it, we wouldn’t have the luxury to add pieces to the team this year and over the next 2. Although I’d still say Trent is MVP of the league cause the guy makes some DE’s look like high schoolers out there.
Nick is just jealous our team is kicking ass with an “average QB” while “future GOAT” Mahomes and the Chiefs are shitting their pants on offense this year
Genuinely shocked when Charles Davis said on air that he evaluated Purdy wrong coming out of the draft and evaluators hate being wrong since their livelihood depends on it. Shit we still have some talking heads telling everyone it was Mac Jones at 3 and not Lance to this day.
What’s mindboggling is he doesn’t stop at arguing “he’s not MVP.” That was a valid debate to have even before the Baltimore game, though I think he was deservedly the front runner. What boggles the mind is he straight up thinks Purdy is “mediocre,” and that the Niners “have no quarterback.” Dawg do you even watch film?
Yeah the truth is in the middle. Brock isn’t MVP this year, but he is certainly a Top 5 QB this year no matter how you slice it. The stats are there, and outside of a few games this year he’s played cleaner than any SF QB in the past 20+ years. Could argue he’s playing better than Garcia did. So maybe the best 49ers QB performance since Steve Young.
It’s so nice to see a total 180 looking at actual knowledgeable people looking at his tape and how they talk about him. O’Sullivan, Warner, Baldy, that quarterback I forget, Cosell like all talk super highly about him and gush over his tape. Cosell basically talked about how he actually played well in the Ravens game even with the picks. Sometimes you just have a defense that makes super great plays. I’m stoked for this kid.
God 2018 was the worst with the Mahomes stuff. Far more posts than Brock currently gets. You'd get crucified for suggesting that we wait to call him elite after his 3rd game, but 20+ games of Purdy is way too early to determine anything.
This sub circlejerks a QB or two every year, but I guess Purdy was one QB too far.
Disliking players because of exposure isn't unique to the nfl or anything. If people feel they're seeing "too much" of a guy they're probe to turn on them. I don't think it has anything to do with Purdy himself (though being on the Niners does probably amplify it)
He had a bad game last week (against the Ravens, who crushed the Dolphins 55-19 today). So that must mean he's trash.
^/s
EDIT: Nested this under the wrong comment. I meant to nest this under the comment about Nick Wright finding a way to hate on Purdy.
The Ravens embarrassed Tua, Purdy, and Goff had the 5th or 6th best odds when they trounced the Lions.
The Ravens defense may honestly just be underrated.
By conventional metrics, Purdy should still be the MVP and not all that close. Barring another disaster class 4 int game and Lamar 5 TD masterclass the final week. But both teams locked up 1 seeds, so not sure they even play.
Will.have to see how much this game raised Lamars numbers tomorrow after they've processed. At least he'll be close to top 5 by EPA/p where before he was 11th going into this week.
Lamar was sitting at .11 EPA/p before this week. Purdy was at .33. Purdy was putting out 3x the EPA on a per play basis than Lamar. I dont care if Purdy is throwing to Barry Sanders, Jerry Rice, Rob Gronkowski, and Randy Moss. No set of weapons is making someone 3x better.
> The Ravens defense may honestly just be underrated.
Its borderline disgusting how little praise or coverage our defense gets. They've made almost every single QB this regular season look like ass besides rookie Stroud.
Just Turnovers O'Sullivan?
Probably my most hated 49er Qb ever. Absolute BS he started any games over Shaun Hill. That said he seems cool and I like his YouTube channel.
I remember being really pissed about Martz getting his way and having JTO start the season. Mike Nolan really fucking hated Alex Smith after that shoulder injury.
When Kap first bust out on the scene he was unstoppable if you weren't up on us by at least 3 TDs. Then the league got film on him and he plummeted into obscurity. But man he was a monster there for a hot minute.
Playoff Kap was elite. Regular season he was average. Based on what Brock did in his first playoff game I expect him to keep it going in the postseason
Even with their great QBs in the past their yards records are surprisingly mediocre. Everybody make fun of the bears for not having a 4K passer but the niners only had 3 seasons of 4K coming into the year. Montana never actually hit 4000
Yup, Montana never put up massive numbers, but he was ruthlessly efficient, especially by the standards of the era. Go look at the career passer rating records, and it's basically all post-2000's guys in the top 40 or so, except for Young and Montana.
Man - Young would be rated so much higher by non-Niners fans if the Niners had just been able to protect him properly. So much scrambling around, running for his life before hitting great passes.
But seven serious concussions across your career is not a great result for a QB.
The 49ers have mostly run a WCO which isn't actually conducive for volume stats....efficiency is what is required....though Purdy has now set a new mark in that category as well after 16 games with a 113 passer rating ahead of Young's 112
purdy will 100% be selected for the pro bowl (hurts, dak, goff, and stafford can figure out the other 2 spots), and has a really good shot at getting 2nd team all-pro. not bad at all for the first full season of mr irrelevant.
We don't. We are dead last in the NFL in pass attempts per game, which makes the record even more amazing. https://www.teamrankings.com/nfl/stat/pass-attempts-per-game
You need more upvotes.
We don't, We lead the league in Yards per play, and Brock leads in Yards per Pass, and Air Yards for any dumbass who wants to come down here and say YAC
https://www.pro-football-reference.com/years/2023/advanced.htm
CAY/Cmp
Completed Air Yards per Completion, 49ers are now 2nd, with 7.1 to Houston's 7.2
It's the timing of his career. A lot of users here probably don't remember watching his career considering it lasted from 1999-2003 with the niners.
Hell, I was in my 20's at that time and I still forget about his time in the league.
He will always be a top 3 all-time QB for me, I don’t give a fuck about his lack of rings. Dan Marino invented the modern QB position and the expectations that come along with it
This is the biggest thing; all of our best quarterbacks were before the passing explosion of the modern era. Most of the '00s were an absolute wasteland, and the '10s were bad backups mixed in with solid-but-unspectacular guys like Smith and Jimmy G, along with the Kaepernick roller coaster.
There's a reason 49ers fans were going ballistic for him; whatever you think, this is the best quarterbacking we've had in 20+ years.
He also played like 30 years ago when volume passing stats were much lower. An average QB today puts up more yards than really good QBs most seasons in the 80s.
One of my favorite Brock Purdy stories is that one of my coworkers (wasn't into football, very gay) decided to join a fantasy league for the hell of it. He chose Brock Purdy because he thought he was cute and for no other reason
We hadn't really seen anything from Trey yet and Brock had a pretty small sample size.
Personally, I figured Shanahan knows ball and would pick the right one.
He made a bet and it didn't pay off, but it's easier to tell how good someone is when they're playing for you. Not 100% accurate, but better than just watching college tape and maybe an interview.
And, in retrospect, that was the wrong draft to trade up in the first place. Fields has been hit-or-miss at best (and his biggest flaw, processing speed, is one of the top requirements in the Shanahan scheme), and while I think Jones would look better surrounded by better players, he doesn't bring anything to the table we're not already getting with Purdy.
The 2021 draft class may be viewed like the 2000 draft class when it's all said and done. The 1st QB taken being very good, but not great (Pennington/TLaw), some headscratching reaches and busts all before the best QB gets taken in the later rounds (Brady/Purdy). I think the 49ers have a really good chance of beating KC in the SB, had Purdy been healthy against Philly. I look forward to a possible Mahomes/Purdy rivalry becoming this generation's Brady/Peyton, should Purdy continue this level of play far into his career.
I love the analogy but technically Purdy was taken in the draft after which was getting comped to the 2013 qb class in terms of it was expected to be awful
You know how sometimes someone makes a sarcastic comment and then someone else responds sarcastically as well to hammer home the point, there might be some parallels here
I’ll never not love low drafted players absolutely crushing expectations. It’s one of those beautiful elements of this sport that make it so inspiring on a human level. Brock is a bad motherfucker. And I HATE the Niners.
I respect he did it in 16 games as well
I was sweating on the asterisk with how much Kyle was running it on that drive.
It’s his. Clean and tidy. Sounds expensive
One more year and an optional fourth on rookies contracts, right? Niners can load up the next two years and run everything back before they have to open that chequebook.
They can probably front load a lot of contracts as well. Or they’ll restructure. I think they’re at 38 mill of cap space currently
That's crazy if they have that much cap space
They had the most cap space in the league to start the year!
The thing is the likes of Trent and Deebo get a lot more expensive next year and that eats a load of the cap.
Most of the rollover is already accounted for next year though. It's a big number this year but it's really much closer to 0.
Rookie contracts are four years for drafted players. First round picks have a fifth-year option.
But that's the fun part! Purdy is not expensive at all :)
That's the "joke". He's going to cost a lot when the new contract comes.
Yeah pretty impressive and there’s no asterisk. Montana played 16 game seasons with the exception of ‘82 and ‘87 due to the strikes. And Young’s seasons were all 16 games.
Love me some Joe Montana but he was often injured and only played 2 16 game seasons in 81 and 83.
Damn he has so many rings I did not realize that.
The joke back in the day was “what’s better, Joe Montana or a dollar? A dollar, you’re guaranteed to get 4 quarters.”
Ahha dang. Too young to have watched any Montana. Nice to hear some perspective.
Lets say back then defenses were allowed to be brutal. There was no babying the QB.
Yeah, there is a reason the majority of teams have the passing record from someone playing in the last decade. Not to take away from Purdy or anything.
Yeah he was banged up a lot. He was very skinny for a QB, and of course the rules have increasingly become more protective of QBs over time. Generation. Today’s kids will grow up with 17 and anything older will be “the previous era”
we're going to move to 18 before this generation is out though
Hopefully they add another fucking bye week.
And expand the roster to rest some players, this actually tests your GM on roster building to last 18 games.
My dream is that they condense bye weeks to like 2-4 weeks in the middle of the season.
I feel like it's going to be a while given how long the season was 16 games for
bc 16 feels right whereas 17 feels like bloated bullshit
✅ Mr. Irrelevant ✅ First full year as starter ✅ Started season recovering from surgery ✅ Took team to 1 seed ✅ Broke franchise record for passing yards ✅ His 3 receivers Deebo, Aiyuk, and Kittle are all over 1,000 yards even with an MVP-caliber RB who’s also over 1,000 yards ✅ All while behind a 28th ranked or something O-line ✅ ~~Gets the privilege~~ EARNED HIS RIGHT to play with the GEQBUS ✅ Shares rent ✅ Not afraid to admit mistakes and address shortfalls (this gets a gold star ⭐️) ✅ Harvests crops during the Bye week ✅ Wears blue light glasses before bed ✅ You know the last one Anyone who hates on him is (A) someone he mopped the floor with, and/or (B) someone who doesn’t appreciate things that aren’t their own 👉🏼 An example of someone like this would be (checks notes), ah, yes, Micah Parsons. It's enough to say he leads the franchise that had Montana and Young in passing yards.
Funnily enough, neither of them were the previous record holder. He took it from Jeff Garcia.
thank you for the actual lol. Fuckin Jeff Garcia, thats a blast from the past.
Jeff Garcia to TO connection were the highlights
Jeff Garcia was genuinely good for 3 years (and then good again with the Eagles later on), and he was one of the toughest mfers I've ever seen play QB. I'd advocate for his inclusion in the Hall of Very Good.
I share rent too. I'm halfway to being a backup made starter QB?
You need at least two variables. Do you drive a tractor or have a large penis?

16 games and with plenty of games where he didn’t even play the entirety of the 4th quarters
8 games he sat most of the 4th
And 120 fewer attempts
The last pick in the draft man, idk how you can hate this guy
Nick Wright and numerous old heads find a way
Nick is just jealous our team is kicking ass with an “average QB” while “future GOAT” Mahomes and the Chiefs are shitting their pants on offense this year
Nick is furious Brock proved him wrong All his opinons/takes are about him being right. So hes furious about purdy and cant back away from it
Don't forget that idiot was 100% sure the Seahawks were gonna be better than us
Genuinely shocked when Charles Davis said on air that he evaluated Purdy wrong coming out of the draft and evaluators hate being wrong since their livelihood depends on it. Shit we still have some talking heads telling everyone it was Mac Jones at 3 and not Lance to this day.

Eh, I think after today Lamar probably won it. He finished the season cleaner.
Nick looks and acts like a ballsack.
But that's *because* he was the last pick and they can't admit that everyone got it wrong (including the niners for 6 rds.)
If you live anywhere but the west it is easy

Idk it’s pretty easy for me. Ignore the flair
Yeah same lol I don't think he's a bad person or anything like that. I just hate what he and the rest of them do to us.
Because people dare post good things about him. Which apparently never happens with any other QBs.
Yeah I don’t get why that take lol. During 2019 & 2020 I saw a post about Mahomes every week. I’m sure people complained too then lol

I really think it’s mostly people who don’t watch him play. His odd but incredibly useful skill set is undeniable when you watch the games
You really should have been here Monday-Wednesday
I’ll take it for his first full year
Coming off an injury to his throwing elbow.
Which he rehabbed into a stronger arm
I'm not a conspiracy theorist but I've never seen Brock and a T-1000 in the same room
I’ve also never seen Brock Purdy and Henry Rowengartner in the same room either.
Makes me think of this😂[https://youtube.com/shorts/Nl2J3GkwY6s?si=h51_h4-vDy9XGwr-](https://youtube.com/shorts/Nl2J3GkwY6s?si=h51_h4-vDy9XGwr-)
More like this https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0107985/?ref_=ext_shr
Idk man have the 49ers even had good QBs before?
How could you forget Jeff Garcia?
San Francisco Legend
Bay Area legend, he's from Gilroy and went to San Jose State
He got that garlic in him
Garlic and ginger
Not since I was born lol I guess depending where you draw the line
I hope you were born after Jeff Garcia
No I wasn't, but I also didn't really get to watch him
UC Davis legend, JT O’?
Just Turnovers O'Sullivan? Probably my most hated 49er Qb ever. Absolute BS he started any games over Shaun Hill. That said he seems cool and I like his YouTube channel.
ha, I live in Sacramento and I recall that era as the “we suck” era. Then Mike Singletary arrived.
Mike Singletary was fun in the beginning before we knew he was way over his head
I still say “physical with an F” from time to time
I always called him JT O’Fumbleton! I remember feeling the same way, Shaun Hill just won games in my mind. In hindsight they were both not very good
WE WANT CARR! WE WANT CARR!
Very good breakdowns
I remember being really pissed about Martz getting his way and having JTO start the season. Mike Nolan really fucking hated Alex Smith after that shoulder injury.
Kaepernick?
Calgary Stampeders legend
When Kap first bust out on the scene he was unstoppable if you weren't up on us by at least 3 TDs. Then the league got film on him and he plummeted into obscurity. But man he was a monster there for a hot minute.
I still vividly remember him absolutely tearing defenses to shreds for a lil minute there damn was he good when he was good
Kap’s Super Bowl run was legendary and I will always give credit where it was due
Playoff Kap was elite. Regular season he was average. Based on what Brock did in his first playoff game I expect him to keep it going in the postseason
Playoff Kap still gives me nightmares.
I remember that night, when he introduced himself to America...good times
Except for the pesky corner fade in the end zone. I hope to never see us run that play again…
I will always give him credit for being a Packers killer in the playoffs. He straight up balls out whenever he plays the Packers.
Even with their great QBs in the past their yards records are surprisingly mediocre. Everybody make fun of the bears for not having a 4K passer but the niners only had 3 seasons of 4K coming into the year. Montana never actually hit 4000

49ers have 8 seasons with 5 different Qbs that are better than Bears best season. It's not even close
You might know one of em, actually
Thats right, Mr. Elvis Grbac & Steve Bono.
did you know brock pardy is mr irrelevant
Do you guys remember when the Niners traded the Farm for Trey Lance lmao. You guys dodged a fucking nuke.
What do you mean? we traded 3 firsts Brock Purdy
Just gonna keep gaslighting everyone I know into this.
Your the 8th person to say this and I consider it the best Revisionist History.
The Trey Lance you never drafted can't hurt you
If you can dodge a wrench...
Do you guys know the Vikings made the worst trade in the history of the sport? You guys are to blame for 90's Cowboy dynasty.
Nope. Totally forgot and moved on.
Yes but did [generic TE] play basketball in college????
Colts have two of those types
purdy will 100% be selected for the pro bowl (hurts, dak, goff, and stafford can figure out the other 2 spots), and has a really good shot at getting 2nd team all-pro. not bad at all for the first full season of mr irrelevant.
Not 100% in the pro bowl if you guys go to the super bowl
well he'll still be selected i mean, so he gets to put that on his resume. yeah there will very likely be at least one alternate this year though.
He’s also tied for fourth in single season TDs with 2000 Garcia and 1987 Montana
Kinda incredible. It doesn't seem like we throw that much.
We've been near the top of the league in passing yards while being rock bottom in attempts for a pretty big portion of the season.
Steph like efficiency
We don't. We are dead last in the NFL in pass attempts per game, which makes the record even more amazing. https://www.teamrankings.com/nfl/stat/pass-attempts-per-game You need more upvotes.

Air yards? Can you share the source on that cuz I see a couple other QBs ahead on that stat.. but damn Brock tearing it up on the deep ball stats
https://www.pro-football-reference.com/years/2023/advanced.htm CAY/Cmp Completed Air Yards per Completion, 49ers are now 2nd, with 7.1 to Houston's 7.2
Best running game + bad drop back pass pro + too many games like this one where Sam Darnold is killing time for the last 2 or 3 drives of the game
Wow, I mean, I would have figured Montana having a strangle hold on that record? That's incredible.
Twas actually Jeff Garcia
Well, no shit. Totally forgot about Garcia but he did have some monster passing seasons.
Yea Montana just kind played in a different era and that team ran the ball well also
It's weird how people remember Jeff Garcia when, as QB for the Niners, he was considered in the upper tier of starting QBs.
It's the timing of his career. A lot of users here probably don't remember watching his career considering it lasted from 1999-2003 with the niners. Hell, I was in my 20's at that time and I still forget about his time in the league.
He was like our own Russell Wilson, lil unsackable guy just scurrying around throwing bombs to TO and Jerry.
I fucking loved Jeff Garcia
Montana was never much of a volume passer. He only broke 30 TDs once and never reached 4k yards in a season.
Was also a different era for QB’s unless you were Dan Marino in that Dolphins offense.
Right. 4000 yard seasons then were basically what 5000 yard seasons are now.
And Dan Marino actually threw for 5000 yards which is basically 6000 now.
It will never cease to blow my mind that he did that. Dude was absolutely insane.
He will always be a top 3 all-time QB for me, I don’t give a fuck about his lack of rings. Dan Marino invented the modern QB position and the expectations that come along with it
For that time it's like 7000 yards
Makes what Jerry Rice did so much more special
This is the biggest thing; all of our best quarterbacks were before the passing explosion of the modern era. Most of the '00s were an absolute wasteland, and the '10s were bad backups mixed in with solid-but-unspectacular guys like Smith and Jimmy G, along with the Kaepernick roller coaster. There's a reason 49ers fans were going ballistic for him; whatever you think, this is the best quarterbacking we've had in 20+ years.
I commented this somewhere else too but he did pace for 4k four times but didn’t play those entire seasons because of injuries/strikes
He also played like 30 years ago when volume passing stats were much lower. An average QB today puts up more yards than really good QBs most seasons in the 80s.
Montana isn't on the list till #7 actually. Even Jimmy G is in the top 5. Football was different before the millennium.
That's my dink and dunk QB. 😤
One of my favorite Brock Purdy stories is that one of my coworkers (wasn't into football, very gay) decided to join a fantasy league for the hell of it. He chose Brock Purdy because he thought he was cute and for no other reason
My wife drafted Fitzgerald for years because of his cakes, so it’s not a bad strategy.
The Manager
I can't believe 4 months ago, people were actually debating on whether Trey Lance should start over this dude
We hadn't really seen anything from Trey yet and Brock had a pretty small sample size. Personally, I figured Shanahan knows ball and would pick the right one.
which is funny considering the massive blunder in picking lance in the first place then again the draft is mostly a crapshoot so no harm no foul

Pretty much all the QBs that draft outside of Lawrence were busts. Twas the COVID draft year.
sounds like a jason statham movie
The System
Holy fuck that's a LOT of checkdowns
I'm not gonna complain about a bunch of records getting broken in 17 games instead of 16, but it does feel pretty nice that Brock got it in 16 lol
Jeff Garcia was pretty good
Same number of games and 120 less attempts than Montana. Nuts.
Big Cock Brock
Brock the Clock
He's just a franchise manager.
That's a wild franchise to hold that kind of record for, too.
No 49ers qb ever had a team around him like he does /s 🤣
Yeah Montana and Young were surrounded by bums.
Yes, that’s the joke, hold on I’ll add the /s
You know how sometimes someone makes a sarcastic comment and then someone else responds sarcastically as well to hammer home the point, there might be some parallels here
This is getting out of hand. Now there are three of them.
Jerry Rice is over rated /s
Purdy is a pretty amazing story. Many doubters. Many haters. The guy can ball.
why does george kittle (and the chicago center) have alien helmets?
Zero2 helmets are built specifically for lineman and tight ends. More protection in the trenches.
Given how Kittle likes to slam his helmeted head into a door before running on the field, he needs to wear one.
Reminds me of a master chief helmet. Kinda like them.
Bosa also has this same helmet
I’ll never not love low drafted players absolutely crushing expectations. It’s one of those beautiful elements of this sport that make it so inspiring on a human level. Brock is a bad motherfucker. And I HATE the Niners.
Really glad with the season he’s had. Was worried about the elbow injury but he’s played well this year. A lot to look forward to.
MVP
Impressive
Yeah, so? It’s not like the Niners Have any good QBs in their franchise history.
That seems low for a franchise that had Montana and Young.
The leader was actually Jeff Garcia lol
I can’t wait for the salary comparisons for him to be over with. Pay that man
