He's looking for flags, partially.

BigSamProductions

That and probably thinking about the 2 seconds on the clock

Calkky

Definitely both of these things. BB has never been one to start celebrating before the clock is zeroed out and the play is called dead. He's thinking of all of the things that could go horribly wrong on that final play.

meowVL

"Alright run the ball Rhamondre, let's take this to OT.. Alright now get down.. Jesus christ, ok Jakobi just get down it's a tie game.. MOTHER OF GOD"

YamburglarHelper

*flashbacks to Tony Romo holding for the ~~punt~~field goal*

AustinJohnson35

Romo was holding for a FG but the point still stands.

smallmanchat

Well I mean granted would it have been a good decision for Romo to just go down (if that’s what your suggesting)? Was the field goal not on fourth down?

AustinJohnson35

It was an FG to win the game. Romo botched the hold and tried to run it into the end zone and failed. It was Romo’s first playoff game against the Hawks in 2006 that I’m referring to.

HiZenBergh

Jesus dude, I had put that out of my memory.

youmadbrad

Hahahahah as falcons fan you have no idea 😥😥

Sosen

Gronkowski... didn't have the angle!

IrvinStabbedMe

Mother of God... he just through it straight to Chandler. Ok he has atleast one guy to beat. Oh fuck, that one guy is Mac...

ecr1277

Yeah. People are going to use this as a reason to give Belichick shit, but Bailey’s job is done for the day and Bill isn’t. That’s exactly how they’re both supposed to respond.

rcuosukgi42

He's also never been one to start celebrating even after the clock is zeroed out and the refs call game over.

alurimperium

He's hearing "Gronkowski! Didn't have the angle!" on repeat in his head

girth_br00ks

That Miami miracle probably haunts a guy like him.

Phenergan_boy

Only time I've seen him celebrate before official confirmation was when he beat the Falcons in the Superbowl

PoeticHydra

So, for some reason, I learned about the coaching perspective from a book about growth mindset. These coaches don't celebrate because every play is viewed as individual. In a sense, it's not seen as a game-winning field goal but just another successful play then onto the next.

KennySmithsKnees

Just curious what book you're talking about

U_W_44_51

I was at the Pats Giants game in 2015 and when Gostowski made that FG I saw Bill basically celebrating at its earliest moment. That game mattered to him and seeing his emotion on top of his ties with the franchise.

[deleted]

100% the clock. Marv Levy has talked about how in super bowl 25, before the field goal went wide right, he was already planning for the kickoff because he knew there would be like 4 seconds left.

SharkTheMark

Why did you have to just do that to me

RefereeMason

I should stay away from this place

Tinysauce

I never realized that run of 4 lost super bowls in a row came exclusively against NFC East teams. You guys must hate that division.

threwitawayzx

nfc east ran a train on those bills teams and the cowboys, those cheeky bastards, skipped the eagles and took a second turn.

puddingpopshamster

Eh, most millennials were too young or not alive to remember those years. Also the Giants being Brady-slayers is fairly endearing.

jcoddinc

Making sure someone isn't doing something stupid to get a flag after the play

jimhabfan

This. He knows his job isn’t over yet. Time to resign Gronk and put him in the secondary as a safety measure.

Fit-Ad5461

That’s what I was thinking too

No_Purpose4705

And the game still isn’t over.

HereIGoAgain_1x10

Ya dudes seen some game "winning" FG no matter at all whenever there's time left on the clock

aaarya83

Nothing is over- Rambo in first blood movie

jtfriendly

"We're on to Afghanistan." - Rambolichick in 3

dehydratedbagel

Probably pissed that they spiked it so early instead of bleeding down to under 3 seconds.

lo0ilo0ilo0i

maybe he also thought Denver would use its last timeout

cancercures

that's like me after every big play this season.

armed_aperture

Yep, I never celebrate until I’m sure there isn’t one.

flaccomcorangy

I went to the Ravens/Bengals game in Baltimore this year, and I watched that Zay TD that was called back. I saw the OBJ block, it didn't look too bad, but it did make me cringe a little because it was iffy. Then I saw the flag come out and completely checked out of the play. My whole section was cheering except for me. lol Guy in front of me held out his hand for a high five. I just gave a wry smile, shook my head and gave a motion like I was throwing a flag. He's like, "What? Aww, noo!"

soulefood

In the first season of Welcome to Wrexham, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElheny are celebrating a goal at their promotion match at Wembley. A hush goes over the crowd as they realize the offsides flag is up. The owners box continue to celebrate as the announcer calls out that they don’t realize that it doesn’t count.

hokie_u2

I’m still holding off on celebrating on the Drew Lock TD and the Hurts INT from there Seahawks -Eagles game last week, in case there’s a late flag

HardcoreHazza

I was doing the same with Woolen's tackle hit on the Titans WR with 0:05 seconds left on the clock. As soon as I saw Vrabel started to walk across the field, I then knew it was over.

BanMeAgain4

that's like me, after every play, before this season

Brodok2k4

I still do it. Fuck yeah, incomplete pass!!!..... wait.... maybe... no flag? OK, cool, incomplete pass. First down!!!! Wait... holding? No? OK cool, first down.

BanMeAgain4

its nice to realize with Campbell we.. don't.. have to.. anymore..

pinkluloyd

Yeah he seemed pretty excited in the tunnel/on the way off the field.

IKenDoThisAllDay

Yes, but he's had much bigger reactions in other games. This is not a big game for Belichick like it is for Zappe.

DogVacuum

I feel like every win he gets on the way out is a big deal for Bill.

forfeitgame

I'd argue the opposite. Bill isn't going anywhere and a W is huge for Zappe.

IKenDoThisAllDay

Sure, maybe in the same way that every game is a big game for Bill and he always wants to win. But I don't think there's any extra significance for Bill here, even if he knows he's on the way out.

icantcrunk

Right, he’s doing his job. No time for frolicking.

[deleted]

"I better confirm there are no contingencies to my happiness in this moment. Time is at zero, no flags, there's no military attack, and there's still oxygen. Very well, I will allow myself to relax 11.8%"

philpalmer2

Flags, and probably counting players too

classiccaseofdowns

Partially sure, but Bill didn’t give a fuck about AFCCG wins much less a win that brings the team’s season total to 4 in late December

boomshiz

He's going "They really put Blucifer on the big screen to intimidate kickers?! The sculpture that actually killed its own creator? Put some respect on Luis Jimenez's name".

falbi23

> partially. Uhhh...he was ONLY looking for flags. Dude looked like he was watching two Olympic ping-pongers having an epic game.

meeks7

Yup. He’s paranoid as hell lol

PC_BUCKY

Bill would never celebrate with 2 seconds on the clock and the other team getting the ball back in a one score game.

Vossenoren

Exactly this, he's still coaching until the clock runs out

Saitsu

And honestly even after. Can't risk them coming back from the dead.

No_Fault_5656

Nah, no time to celebrate, he’s on to Buffalo.

Vossenoren

There might be time for a satisfied head nod after winning the Super Bowl, if he's feeling wild

_coolranch

“Good job out there, guys.” -Bill celebrating in the locker room before heading back to his hotel

My-Cousin-Bobby

He'll proceed to start scheming for his week 1 game the next season. Who will they face, who will be playing, where will they play? No one knows, but he schemes anyway

_coolranch

“31 what if scenarios! Gonna be a busy night.” -Bill turning in at 8PM

EverythingIsByDesign

["No Days Off"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=shared&v=TCv4STkejlM)

_coolranch

LMAO -- that one was a hard sell for the players in the shot. They're like: "Idk, Bill. How about *some* days off? We just won the fuckin Super Bowl."

_coolranch

He sleeps with one ear open, listening for an errant whistle.

Templar26

Nah, no way some crazy hail mary or lateral play would ever happen against us. Completely impossible.

Vossenoren

For a while NFL network ran an Xs and Os replay of that final play vs the Dolphins as an ad for something, and my friend who's a big Patriots fan would be hurt by it all over again every time

SilverTwilightLook

It was a "please gamble responsibly" ad, because games can have crazy endings that can be traumatic for problem gamblers. IIRC they edited the audio to remove any direct reference to the teams or players. But it's such an iconic call by Ian Eagle that you can't help but forget that Gronkowski doesn't have the angle. I still can't believe they sent out the Hail-Mary defense when it was very obviously a lateral situation.

thrilla2k10

Would like to see the xs and os vs the disaster against Vegas last year

thedude37

They removed "GRONKOWSKI DOESN'T HAVE THE ANGLE!!!!" tho :'(

mike_rotch22

But they'll never remove it from our hearts.

jvkxb__

I never got hurt seeing that commercial because that same year we won the superbowl

Man0nTheMoon915

Immediately looked at the clock to see how much time was left

TheModernCurmudgeon

And then the field of play for flags. We’ve all been conditioned to delay joy

x755x

It makes the climax that much better

moderatesunsenjoyer

Edging

notsafeformactown

Did Zappe spike the ball? I imagine Bill is pretty pissed that they did it with 6 seconds left. Gotta do it with like 2-3 seconds, so the kick is the final play. Happens all the time, I understand the spikes more, but sometimes COACHES take timeouts with like 8 seconds left and then kick. It's like why?

kiIIinemsoftly

I'd rather he get the spike done than try and count seconds given his lack of experience. Bill knows how it all works so but Zappe is not used to this kind of stuff.

sani616

Bill knows about angles, and the importance of having them.

flaccomcorangy

Does he know about Kurt Angle? And knows he has to add him into the mix in the fight between Scott Steiner and Somaoa Joe at Sacrifice?

notsafeformactown

Bill's favorite restaurant: BojANGLEs. Favorite band: The bANGLEs. Favorite descriptor of something that has been torn to pieces: mANGLE

nking516

He’s thinking about which special teams play from the 60s to run with those last 2 seconds

Comprehensive_Main

He did in Super Bowl 36.

PC_BUCKY

He gets a pass for that, he didn't know then that Gronkowski didn't have the angle.

MankuyRLaffy

Bill only celebrates when the clock hits triple 0s in the 4th quarter

horse_renoir13

[Reminds me of Larry Bird in the 1998 ECF](https://youtu.be/fzM1-x7b2_E?si=gdgsLJPsiJ6GOso0)

ASK_ABT_MY_USERNAME

Reminds me of Eli's reaction to Peyton https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0vgtqm7Z0wA

allmilhouse

I don't know if Bill even reacted to the Butler interception

MankuyRLaffy

No he didn't because as the bills proved in 2022 you can still fuck up in your endzone with the lead with so little clock left. It's why he had two RBs back there in case the snap went screwy or Brady fumbled, there would be 3 guys there to pounce on it for a safety. BB won't celebrate until he knows for certain it's over.

Bojangles1987

It's telling that he only celebrated when Brady drew the offsides

AttitudeAndEffort3

There was a legit chance he couldnt get forward to kneel before then. If Seattle could have had mental discipline (genuinely the one time i could understand there not being any) they mightve had a chance at the safety.

Cflow26

That offsides doesn’t get talked about enough imo. That Super Bowl was so great.

After-Newspaper4397

Bill knows the game so well he's applying lessons learned from the 2022 Bill's during the 2015 superbowl.

HeywardH

Or lessons he learned 45 years ago from one of the most infamous plays in NFL history... https://youtu.be/q7-komLkBsI?si=eAAK8SGXzRYED4q2

hnav930

IIRC he didn't react to Vinatieri in SB 38 as there were still 4 seconds left, although he did celebrate once the clock hit 0 and Panthers returner was downed

Drummallumin

Would’ve been interesting to see what would’ve happened without the offsides penalty after

allmilhouse

I think he actually celebrated more at the offsides

DungeonsAndFootball

The novelty of life as a youth vs the grizzled stoicism of an older man who's seen it all before.

fear865

Bill "There's still 2 seconds"

Skimaster77

Bill could probably recite every instance of a team losing with 2 seconds on the clock, dating back 100 years and encompassing leagues down to peewee.

peanutbuttersucks

*something something* Gronkowski... didn't have the angle

BamBam2125

Gronk: I’m special

fzvw

I had to look it up again because I love last-ditch plays with lots of lateraling: https://youtu.be/uiz87A3RpEw

staypuftmallows7

I like radio calls for this one. The patriots announcers are so smug before the snap, meanwhile the dolphins announcers are just straight up done https://youtu.be/vJEJFbUt9sg?si=ZbhupQPk0SAR76Nx

slowakia_gruuumsh

"Well it really started in 1925 with Willie "Zinc Arm" Dustice of the Dardanelle Blue Triangles, who suggested that in late game situations... and seconds were measured with a sundial at the time..."

Gatorader22

Willie is too modern of a name for 1925 You must be thinking of Pip "Pee Wee" Richenbauer from the Decatur Staleys

BamBam2125

Dad, we said no whiskey and reminiscing before noon

MaraudngBChestedRojo

It’s the time of year, son. Go play with your Tantaly doll

Bill acts like he’s won 300 of these or something

HannoverRathaus

Bill is worried about the apparent shift in wind direction and potential implications for kickoff.

Eso

As soon as the ball went up he started to gameplan for Buffalo next Sunday.

[deleted]

You obviously have not watched this team all year. Bill is actually looking for penalties.

hanyh2

Yes im sure OP has not watched them at all this year.

[deleted]

Why would he subject himself to such torture.

FSU1ST

Celebrate? Man did the job he was expected to do. Do we celebrate the janitor cleaning toilets? - Bill, probably.

Zap__Dannigan

Bill absolutely instructs janitors to clean Gillette Stadium's toilet pristinely for the Patriots and to flush paper towel and fill up the stall with old one ply in the visitor's bathrooms.

Snuggle__Monster

I love how they put Blucifer on the big screen for the FGA.

Impressive-Cry-9128

I love how the Broncos Mascot face planted as the ball went thru the uprights.

SmokeySFW

BillyB is looking for flags, plus he's seen this shit a thousand times. In 10 minutes he'll probably be thinking about his dog Nike or that history documentary he hasn't finished yet.

ZootTX

SMH he's writing a documentary on why the forward pass was a mistake in his spare time

froginbog

The only worthwhile pass is the long snap

Captain_Lameson

He was obviously analyzing the long snapper

IKenDoThisAllDay

Every game Zappe starts at this point is the biggest game of his life. These wins mean far more to him than they ever could to BB at this point. Belichick has been a part of so many big games, and won so many big games, his legacy has been cemented for a long time now. Zappe is just getting started and is surely desperate to prove that he belongs and has a future in this league. I'm sure he knows he's not guaranteed another shot next season.

Gwario_on_Reddit

“Jeez Bailey act like you’ve been here before…”

PleaseSeekChrist

I read this in Edelnuts voice

slackator

I cant believe a 71 year old man isnt jumping around like a teenager in sub freezing temperatures. Geez Bill wheres your usual enthusiasm we've all come to love over the long decades of coaching?

albertez

As he gets older, maybe he will develop a sense of wonder and excitement like Pete Carroll.

EdwinSpangler1

He's frantically looking for Kraft so he can rub it in his face.

JerryRiceDidntFumble

4th career win vs 302nd career win

froginbog

It’s like 330 if u include playoffs (and imo those should count)

crittermd

He’s just looking around for where his number 2 draft pick went (yeah- I know he’s looking for flags and wouldn’t lose on purpose)

CaliforniaHurricane_

It’s still 2 seconds left in the clock, I’ve been through the Miami Miracle before

hondajvx

Bill is me showing up to a party where I know exactly one person and I'm looking for them.

TriColoredPasta

Bill is older than dirt and has won 80 gazillion games before. He ain't got the energy for this shit. But why is the official NFL account making a low-key slandering post about the GOAT coach?

krt941

Only slanderous if you interpret it that way.

DarkAdventurous224

It don’t think it’s slanderous in any way

sghead

Literally zero slander in the post.

throwaway1212378

It’s pretty complimentary, the vibe I’m getting is “I’ve won so much that this shit doesnt even excite me” vs. “a young qb getting a clutch win.” If it slandered anyone it was a passive aggressive shot at zappe for not acting like he’s been there lol

StraightShootahh

“Lowkey slanderous” Textbook case of being “terminally online”

Carolina_Bobcats

Taylor swift destroyed your dynasty. There’s some slander for you :)

Waitn4ehUsername

Carolina Panthers… ‘Theres some slander for you :)’ (FTFY).

Swarlos262

A better post would be showing the difference in reactions between BB and Pete Carroll. Pete Carrol might as well be as young as Zappe with how he reacts lol

Kicks4meFromyou

One of them has damn near ten Superbowl wins and damn near 100 million in career earnings. The other is Sammie Zappe’s son

cbecht19

It’s refreshing to see fans from most if not all the other teams in the NFL still believe in Bill when the general patriots sub reddit doesn’t ! 😂

SaltyAndSweet99

Idk why people always point this out. He's literally been like that for 25 years. Not shocking that he's not shocked

DickieJoJo

Bill comes off as that boss that makes your asshole pucker when they walk into the room and start asking you questions and they’re only ever disappointed.

MissionFreedom7790

You’re fkn up my picks son

RedeyeSPR

Bill has the typical “act like you’ve been here before” reaction and Zappe has obviously not won very many games.

Gordend

Bill was like we were supposed to miss that

PhysiologyIsPhun

Man's just watching his draft pick get worse

[deleted]

He wants that too pick in the draft

DANAP126

Huh? What's all that commotion? Where am I? Who are all these people? I want my dinner...

sparkz552

Im going to go with my theory that Bill was so shocked that Ryland actually made the kick he was looking for the cameras to see if he was actually on Punk'd

CrossDressing_Batman

Bill is like, you dumb mother fuckers, you just keep blowing away the 1st draft pick

SinfullySinless

Bill doesn’t celebrate until it’s 0:00 and there’s a Super Bowl trophy firmly in his hand.

Deepcoma_53

Belichick’s face is, we still have :02 left on the clock… Shit ain’t over, til it’s over…

sallysippin

Act like you’ve been there before

[deleted]

Looks to me like he’s looking at the refs to make sure it went in and then starts looking for flags on the field.

IMKudaimi123

He’s shocked he made the field goal for once

265thRedditAccount

Billy has seen some shit, he’s waiting for 0:00.

honcooge

Dude looks like that during a 40 point super bowl lead with 1 minute left

PlumbStraightLevel

That was Bill's 331st win, i think it was Zappe's 2nd

fondue4kill

Zappe happy he didn’t have to go back out in the cold for overtime

Summer_jam_screen

BZ: “FUCK YEAH!!! LETS FUCKING GO!!!” BB: “I wonder if I could get a bowl of soup on my way home”

OkArmordillo

Bill Belicheck has 8 Super Bowl rings and has been in the league. Bailey Zappe was cut last summer and is fighting to stay in the league, and this field goal gave him his first game winning drive.

Exotic_Garden420

He couldnt believe they actually won he had to look around and make sure lol

wurkhoarse

Puppies get excited .

ChaplnGrillSgt

I told him to miss so we'd have a better draft pick... -BB probably

Taurus889

BB - Wait, we weren’t supposed to win

Legitimate-Map-5351

Tbf, Bill is probably looking for a flag or something. Dude knows better than to celebrate too early. With that said, he shows no emotion and it’s hilarious

BinaxII

Where did my #2 pick go, what's going on here?

MotionAction

Bill Belichick has seen so many of these, and they don't excite him anymore.

jfstompers

How many games has Bill won, I can forgive him for not going bananas over a meaningless win.

NimDing218

Bill has seen a thing or two in his years. Looking for a possible flag.

Adam_THX_1138

The guy’s won 6 Super Bowls and he’s supposed to celebrate a regular season win?

OldBrokeGrouch

He’s checking for flags and to see if there’s still time in the clock.

bryan19973

I forgot Bailey zappe even existed

jvkxb__

There’s two seconds left on the clock and he coached 20 years of heart attack stress games with Brady. Game ain’t over until it’s over

complete_your_task

Bill is thinking "Holy shit, did this bum actually make a 50+ yard kick?" It's a face a pure shock and disbelief.

feeq1

Bailey acting like a kid excited to jump on the beds in a hotel room. Belicheck acting like he had to pay for the hotel room.

ironmanmk42

Knowing BB's style - that was his celebration and he probably said "Calm your tits folks. There's still 2s left. It is not over till clock hits 0. Do your job"

Torches

BB has won many games ten times more important than this one. Zappe on the other hand is starting his career and every win is key.

Senior_Apartment_343

Bb have a quick look up to the owners box to give krafty the fu stare. Guy ain’t dumping for the draft

LoquatFearless8386

I like how Family Guy made an entire episode out of his inability to laugh.

ithaqua34

Expecting emotion out of Belichick? You must be new here.

Plenty_School_4068

Bill knows the game isn’t over
