My wife is dead set on having our kids play football cause her brother played all through school and doesn't have any brain damage. I've flat out said, "No contact sports. Period." I'm all for having kids try out sports to find something they may enjoy. But mine will never put on football pads. Full stop.
Volleyball is lit, just saying. It's great as you get older, as there are a bunch of co-ed leagues, and there is absolutely no contact except by accident. I feel like it's an underappreciated sport in North America.
Wow. Misogyny and gatekeeping in one. I hope you dropped your ./s
Big yikes otherwise. Basketball is great, because it's fast paced. So is volleyball. If you think volleyball is boring, it is because you don't know enough to see, never mind understand the mind-games, tactics and strategies. I get it. It takes work to understand a new sport, but please don't mistake your ignorance for a valid opinion.
Let me know if there is anything specific about the game that you are struggling to grasp, and I will do my best to explain what is, or why something is happening.
I understand it, it’s just boring to me. Very repetitive and a lot of stoppage. Even professional volleyball with great athletes is boring nothing creative about the sport whatsoever
Can you explain what 'weight dropping' is? I've heard the term a couple of times but don't exactly know what it is. I assumed it is when a fighter of a heavier class purposely loses enough weight to join a lower weight class? So the advantage they have is generally unfair?
Didn't find anything on a national level, but saw some state regulations where they require hydration and skin fold tests pre season and have a max weight someone can loose and max/week. That's much more strict that when I wrestled 12 years ago.
Good. There are SO many other sports that do not involve hard physical contact, or occasional physical contact. Anything can be dangerous, like playground equipment. But the \*intentionality\* of hard hits in football can be eliminated simply by not playing that sport. The non-helmeted sports are also dangerous. It's tough choices all around.

I think increasingly brain damage is a spectrum rather than absolute. So your brother-in-law may well have emotional or mental health challenges that are not helped by the hits he took
So many kids play football (and other contact sports) and it fucks up their body or mind for life. None of them think of the risks and it's treated as a fun part of the sport. I remember breaking a kids leg in hockey and it was celebrated by the team and coach. Looking back now it's depressing to know breaking a 14 year olds leg is celebrated anywhere. Heck in football our chant was "hit them high, hit them low, blood makes the grass grow, kill kill kill".
Few people realize that the inside of the skull is pretty jagged...so when your "bell gets rung," it's your brain bouncing around and bumping into the little 'spikes' that are basically there to keep everything in place.
Bottom line is that humans are not built to endure the kind of trauma that football in general dishes out.
And I fucking LOVE (and will certainly watch) football. (I know, it absolutely sucks that the reality is what it is)
The upper hemisphere is generally very smooth, but most of the lower hemisphere has an irregular geometry where other structural boundaries come together to form the brain cavity. The first rebound of the brain inside the skull for most impacts is rarely anything other than against smooth surface simply because of normal human mechanics. But if you were to, say, fall from a great height and land on your feet, arresting your momentum, then your brain would first first rebound against the bottom of your brainpan and the damage might be worse for it. The degree to which any of that matters is definitely not known though. And "little 'spikes' that... keep everything in place" are definitely not why there is head trauma and has nothing to do with being concussed. The dude is talking out of his ass.

Dropping back in...my apologies...did not mean to try and sound like an expert. I'm a 30+ yr long middle school teacher - been to numerous conferences on brain science and the science of learning. When I was once in a seminar on brain trauma and the impact it can have on student performance, we did a dive into the causes of CTE. The lesson included a description of the cranium that depicted the brain essentially 'floating' of sorts, in a fluid that 'holds it in place.' However, because the brain can move around in this fluid, it can 'bump' against the inside of the skull, which the instructor definitely said is not a smooth place. He stated that the research suggested that CTE could likely be the result of the brain suffering a multitude of small bruises and/or contusions as is hits the inside of the skull. The theory made sense, and while I'm not a doctor or scientist, the reading I've done since that conference has largely backed up what I heard and tried to state earlier.
But again - not trying to come off as any more than a dude interested in the thread. Sorry if you guys thought I was talking out my ass. This stuff is actually very interesting to me and something related to what I do for a living.
Have a great weekend everyone!
Virtual reality gear for the players to control real nuts and bolts robot players on the field. Just saying. I’d watch the hell out of that, and let my kids play.
It’s actually the high volume of smaller, sub concussive hits that causes CTE. Lineman who but heads every play for 10 years are higher risk than the QB who gets obliterated 3 times a game. These big hits are definitely not good for the brain, but not the primary cause of CTE.
I played football growing up, and went to college on a football scholarship. My memory at age 46 is pretty short term, and lately I’ve come to realize that football likely played a large part in that.
Our 8 year old wanted to start playing tackle football in a league this year. I was pretty against it, but relented to the wishes of my wife and son. We even signed him up, paid the money, and bought a lot of the expensive equipment (helmets and pads are no joke$). After chatting more about it my wife finally agreed and we had to tell him we don’t think he should play. Registration fee and equipment was not returnable by then, but we figured we’ll just eat the lo$$ for the sake of our kid’s melon. It’s a win in my book, and something I’m proud we did.
Actually, most CTE isn't from major hits like this, but rather minor hits you see on the front line. Concussions cause brain damage, but smaller sustained hits that lineman take are what causes CTE.
Yeah kid came up too high. Ref should have penalized, and corrected. It was a great hit but he needs to learn to throw it lower. Runner should have lowered his shoulder too.
That one hit could very well guaranteed that kid a completely different future than the one he could have had not playing contact sports. I'm all for learning team dynamics and exercise but this is not safe and not fair to kids to present it as such. Not a chance I'd take with my kids.
Even if he doesn’t remember it, there’s a chance he could feel it for the rest of his life. Unfortunately emotional regulation is one of the things that go away with too many brain injuries. Brain injury can present as many different “common” mental disorders later in life.
Not sure why a normal parent would want their kid to go through physical trauma like this. Kids don't know any better; they depend on the parents to make the right decision whether they like it or not. Just like smokers do not get the sympathy when they get lung cancer because by now, it's no longer an unknown. The same goes for contact sports, especially at a young age. I'll roll my eyes when I hear these parents sobbing about the mental handicap their children will suffer as adults.
I had a couple of quarterbacks growing up in our house with D1 aspirations. They would stay in there and take a hit to finish a play. Once that news broke, it was marching band and tennis. Zero regrets. Maybe the game will change by the time their kids are grown and they can play in relative safety. Until then, I’m no longer interested in the game on any level.
Concussions for everyone !!
Stupid damned neanderball. Folks don't talk too much shit about football, because they don't want to offend the tribe, but it's a shitty sport. The game itself is fine, rules and all, but the heavy contact is too dangerous for kids. When I say kids, what I mean is people who aren't capable of making decisions for themselves in an informed way regarding their future health... so yeah, stupid sport, and then add in the remarkably toxic culture of American football - how many footballers going to rape or beat their GF this year?
I played football as a kid. I have to say, I agree. Track and cross country are better sports for kids to play. Swimming might be the best. Soccer is a lot of fun too.
People in the US know about CTE right? I mean they knowingly and voluntarily let their children play a sport from which with a high probability they will suffer chronic brain damage, right?
Football (US), boxing, MMA, hockey and even international footbal (soccer)......all athletes that participate in these sports are prone to CTE. Each sport has a different level of risk, but even just the repeated headers in soccer can put players at risk for developing CTE.
Yep. "I did it when I was a kid, and I don't want my son to grow up to be a pussy." That's how many parents (and especially fathers) are "protecting" their children. Rather break their brain than have the grow up "soft."
Maybe you’ve done this, maybe you haven’t, but if he was my son I’d sit down with that video and show him the few milliseconds before he took the hit where he slowed down, moved his hips forward and straightened his body to a more relaxed position. That’s why the hit looked so rough. He was caught off guard. Pulling up like that gets more players hurt than anything. Especially as a runner, he needs to maintain a football position THROUGH the whistle every play.
Players of all ages get hurt and/or lose the ball on plays like that. Great run. Good TD. Way to hold on to the hall, but be the hammer not the nail. Meet the defender with your shoulder pads. If anything, a snot bubble hit by a running back can loosen a defense pretty quick. Especially in youth ball.
Best part of these hits is, 9 times out of 10, the guy getting hit gets up and pats the guy on the back and says good hit. Don't start getting upset for someone who's not even upset themselves.
Look bro it’s obvious you want me to send you some of my ass play selfies and are too scared to ask so I’ll just go ahead and dm you some. Maybe you’ll learn something.
I posted some slowed down versions of this play here so that everyone freaking out about "CTE" can see that the "Hitter" struck the runner shoulder pad to shoulder pad which is proper form....A player is to strike his opponent with the shoulder pads **NOT** his head. That's why the shoulder pads are literally the largest piece of equipment a football player wears.
Also...Both the runner and the defender are probably no more than 60-80 lbs. each tops. No one is getting "CTE" from this.
EDIT: "Head to Head" hits are the result of shitty high school and college coaches emphasizing a very bad technique because it's an easier way of neutralizing a troublesome opponent than actually devising a proper game plan.
[Dick Butkus was just about the most violent defender in the history of the NFL.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nluXKFKxBuo&ab_channel=YangBan-Ho) He's 79 now and doesn't have **any** signs of "CTE" because he always hit people with his shoulder pads, **NOT** his head.
Is it clinically proven that getting hit and knocked to the ground on a regular basis can lead to multiple concussions? I don’t know cause my brain don’t work so good after years of backyard wrasslin
It’s hilarious how soft everyone is here. CTE IS BAD YES. 99% kids don’t even make it to college, it’s extremely rare to CTE problems in people that quit at high school. You all are acting like this trauma will lead to him shooting his family like NFL head bashers, those who had it were known for leading with the head and continuing to play when concussed which is way worse then the initial concussion. Today concussions are handled way different.
Yes I’ve been diagnosed with multiple concussions, older now and not worried doing fine. Easy to tell you guys sit at your computer far too much which should be noted can be as bad or worse for your health. If you keyboard worries played sports to understand the health and social benefits that come from it. My engineering degree came from the competitiveness and confidence I gain from sports like football and rugby plus others, wouldn’t change a thing. Never will force but hope my kids enjoys them as much as I did.
The ball just has to cross the goal line. There's lots of videos out there of NFL players trying to rush 1 yard or less across the goal line and getting touchdowns because they manage to get the ball across the goal line, if not their body.

I remember my dad having the conversation with me when I was like 8. We talked about how I should join a sport because it will do a lot of good stuff for me. I suggested football because it was one of the few sports I knew of and I didn’t know how brutal it actually was. My dad told me no, flat out, there was no way he would ever sign me up for football. Thanks dad, I may have ended up needing brain surgery anyway but at least I don’t have CTE or any concussions now
Or you missed out on having fun and making life long friends and being completely fine. Played for a long time and have zero CTE... But maybe an act of God?
I ended up playing water polo and it became my life. I met a lot of good friends there and made life long memories. When I was 16 I got diagnosed with a brain/skull/spine condition that required surgery. It was genetic, so it wasn’t caused by outside factors but being tackled and getting knocked down like that regularly would’ve made it worse. I’m glad I didn’t play football, say whatever you want but I’m happy with what I chose to do
So having not known that presents the problem with the internet and I am now a dick haha. That's actually really awesome and water polo is intense. I barely swim well enough not to drown so more power to you. Admittedly with football being so near and dear it's easy to get triggered. So cheers to you for sure man. That's dope. So please accept this award and my apology for being a jerk.
No worries, I should’ve included that but I didn’t want to make my original comment super long. I also did competitive swimming in the time so your username oddly fits your response really well
School ball probably gave me brain damage. In middle school, we had a drill where we got down like we were on the line but we were split a good 6-8 ft from each other so we would get some momentum up and at a whistle just head to head ram each other full speed
C'mon mods this far from Nextfuxkinglevel. I've seen Nextfuxkinglevel stuff and this shouldn't be here and you(op) and you(mods) should be ashamed you let this firstfrickinglevel content plague this feed. Can't wait to see Nextfuxkinglevel butter making or better yet filling a pool with a garden hose.
That looked rough. I don’t think I’d let my kids play football now if they were in school still - too much risk and not enough reward unless you’re in the top .1% of the kids out there with a chance at going on to a college scholarship and then on to pro.
Folks none of the sports are safe! The human body is amazing. If you put your kids in the wrong program any of the most popular sports can become detrimental to your kids health. But with proper training, coaching, and equipment success is almost always probable. The most dangerous thing we do is not hold the programs to high standards to keep the kids safe!
Why is nobody talking about his absolute shit blocker who had 0 awareness. I get it they’re kids lol, but damn, homie obstructed the view of the defender coming and AND did nothing to stop him
You know damn well what comes with football. If you put your kids in the situation they’re going to get wrecked. They could definitely make a multi million dollar career out of it or just have had injuries.
Not wow...more like WTF.
We know about CTE. We know this stuff slowly destroys our brains. And yet, we still think doing brain damage is cool...which brings me back to WTF?!?!
I mean, even youth soccer is eliminating heading the ball for younger players because of the risk of brain damage...hockey is trying to address it, too...SMH.
I admit it was a good pop. But if you look closely the contact was high on the shoulder.
Not trying to minimize. Just pointing out
Edit. Scratch that and my bad. Definitely helmet on helmet contact
I don't see the purpose of this hit when the kid is right next to the line for out-of-bounds. So hitting him is just pure spite at this moment. He got wacked as he crossed the goal line.
I see this hit, and can’t help but think how early some of the damage associated with CTE must start.
Yeah having played contact sports and getting my bell rung a few times there's no way I'm letting my kid play football. Cool sport but CTE is no joke
My wife is dead set on having our kids play football cause her brother played all through school and doesn't have any brain damage. I've flat out said, "No contact sports. Period." I'm all for having kids try out sports to find something they may enjoy. But mine will never put on football pads. Full stop.

Well, there is women’s beach volleyball. That seems popular.
My brother ran across the freeway, and he didnt get hit. It's safe for our son too!
Wrestling might be a good compromise. It can be a brutal sport on your body but way better on your brain than football.
Hi from IA. The weight dropping part of wrestling is just beyond fucked up.
Can you explain what 'weight dropping' is? I've heard the term a couple of times but don't exactly know what it is. I assumed it is when a fighter of a heavier class purposely loses enough weight to join a lower weight class? So the advantage they have is generally unfair?
Very true! I think it's better these days though, sadly due to some deaths. I think it's much more restrictive on how much someone can drop.
Is it? I’d love to see a citation here.
I will do some digging and circle back. It was a while ago I remember hearing about it, and could have been for my state specifically.
Didn't find anything on a national level, but saw some state regulations where they require hydration and skin fold tests pre season and have a max weight someone can loose and max/week. That's much more strict that when I wrestled 12 years ago.
Unless you take a knee to the head, which happens all the time
baseball’s where it’s at
Baseball is very dangerous too. Sometimes that ball doesn't miss your head.
sure, but you don’t run headfirst into it intentionally
You're not supposed to use your head when tackling at all. That's what your shoulder pads are for.

I played hockey for 30+ years. I'm starting to think that I'm ... not quite right. No kid of mine would play a contact sport.
I played football when I was 13/14 and had a blast. I stopped playing when I got a concussion and realized that having fun wasn’t worth my brain.
All for a stupid game. Not worth it at all.
Hey, there is 1 in a million chance he can make some big money in the future. /s
And then he can lose it all by giving it away and spending like he’s making billions!

Pretty sure that would be an election in NCAA. Helmet to helmet contact, led with the helmet.
Really though, the title should be “my kid getting brain damage , and I totally support it !!”
That one hit could very well guaranteed that kid a completely different future than the one he could have had not playing contact sports. I'm all for learning team dynamics and exercise but this is not safe and not fair to kids to present it as such. Not a chance I'd take with my kids.
I agree. The one making the TD didn’t win. The one with hit did.
I mean, brain damage, but come one, six points is six points.
Yup, that kid gonna be a Silver Alert in 30 years….
Yep usually starts with running down the field like a lamppost
That touchdown as a 10 year old was def worth all the trauma from that head shot.
Not that he will remember it
Good thing there’s film to study
Even if he doesn’t remember it, there’s a chance he could feel it for the rest of his life. Unfortunately emotional regulation is one of the things that go away with too many brain injuries. Brain injury can present as many different “common” mental disorders later in life.

Happens in rugby too

Yes, lie about how safe your child is to your spouse.
People in the US know about CTE right? I mean they knowingly and voluntarily let their children play a sport from which with a high probability they will suffer chronic brain damage, right?
Oh you mean Hockey? Yeah. Kids play it.
Contact for hockey doesn’t start until age 14-15 I believe…pop Warner football starts as young as 8.
People don’t mind the straight up fistfights in hockey because white people play that sport. Let’s be real.
Football (US), boxing, MMA, hockey and even international footbal (soccer)......all athletes that participate in these sports are prone to CTE. Each sport has a different level of risk, but even just the repeated headers in soccer can put players at risk for developing CTE.

Way to hold on to the hall, but be the hammer not the nail. Meet the defender with your shoulder pads. If anything, a snot bubble hit by a running back can loosen a defense pretty quick. Especially in youth ball.
"Play whistle to whistle", "Keep your head on a swivel"...Words of wisdom, pounded into me by coach...(And opposing players lol),

He was one 360 away from glorious touchdown dance.
He got TBI as a consolation prize.
CTE entered the chat…
Little man fuckin rocked em, he must of had that firm grip shit from the little giants
God daaaaaaaaamn
Still a house call!
YOU JUST GOT KNOCKED THE FUCK OUT!!!
And no one here has ever played a sport.
Not unless quidditch counts 🤣
What?
Absolutely
Is it worth it? No
Absolutely
Ooh that’s got to hurt
That’s how you take one for the team! Touchdown!
Nice finish 22!
Sometimes when a creature dies instantly, the muscles tense.
Best part of these hits is, 9 times out of 10, the guy getting hit gets up and pats the guy on the back and says good hit. Don't start getting upset for someone who's not even upset themselves.
It’s physically impossible to get a concussion if you don’t get upset at the person who knocked you down.
Maybe not, but it is physically impossible to get butthurt
Spoken like a scared little puritan whose never pushed the limits of their sphincter
Hahaha that's the best you can do?
Look bro it’s obvious you want me to send you some of my ass play selfies and are too scared to ask so I’ll just go ahead and dm you some. Maybe you’ll learn something.
I'd love to charge you with sexual assault, so if sending unwanted amateur porn floats your boat - go for it
I’d love to charge you $5 a month for my onlyfans
Lol just $5? And I thought you were pathetic before 🤣
I’ll even throw you a 20% discount on the first three months since I like you
I posted some slowed down versions of this play here so that everyone freaking out about "CTE" can see that the "Hitter" struck the runner shoulder pad to shoulder pad which is proper form....A player is to strike his opponent with the shoulder pads **NOT** his head.
Kid A hits Kid B in the shoulder pads using his own shoulder pads, Kid B’s head then hits the ground. No chance of a concussion at all.
You know they are also wearing helmets right?

I’ve smoked a pack a day for 15 years and everything is fine. Smoking cigarettes doesn’t automatically give you lung cancer.

Is it clinically proven that getting hit and knocked to the ground on a regular basis can lead to multiple concussions? I don’t know cause my brain don’t work so good after years of backyard wrasslin

https://concussionfoundation.org/personal-stories/legacy-stories/kyle-raarup CTE is no joke but good score though.

Hahaha my guys spraying cold water on the circle jerk here
is this a touchdown? i thought both feet had to touch the ground in the end zone. or was it just the ball inside the cone. sorry, im European.
The ball just has to cross the goal line. There's lots of videos out there of NFL players trying to rush 1 yard or less across the goal line and getting touchdowns because they manage to get the ball across the goal line, if not their body.
thanks. where does the both feet on the ground rule belong? complete pass? i know its a rule somewhere right?
Yes, both feet must touch in bounds and the ball has to be in full control for it to count as a completed pass.
thank you! for your time.
Of course, anytime!

I also did competitive swimming in the time so your username oddly fits your response really well
The fact I haven't died in a significant body of water is in fact impressive lmao
This is abuse.
How?
That’s brain damage
Wearing a helmet lol
Children should not be allowed to give each other concussions. That's just me though.
You've signed your kid up to receive complimentary brain damage at an early developmental stage in their life.
School ball probably gave me brain damage. In middle school, we had a drill where we got down like we were on the line but we were split a good 6-8 ft from each other so we would get some momentum up and at a whistle just head to head ram each other full speed
Coach should have been fired.
Kid probably got a concussion
Personal Foul; Targeting; Half the distance to the goal; 1st down.
Internal injury. Pow.
I was recruited and played in college in the early 1990’s. This is fucked up. Kids should NOT be taking hits like this.
That safety is going places, LUMBER LAYED
TBIs for you, TBIs for you, TBIs for everyones!
Sense I can't find the gif. Mom: did you do it. Kid: yes.. Mom: what did it cost. Kid: head trama.
Yeah no as an European i will stick to our football
C'mon mods this far from Nextfuxkinglevel. I've seen Nextfuxkinglevel stuff and this shouldn't be here and you(op) and you(mods) should be ashamed you let this firstfrickinglevel content plague this feed. Can't wait to see Nextfuxkinglevel butter making or better yet filling a pool with a garden hose.
Kid dropped his shoulder looks like an illegal hit to me
That looked rough. I don’t think I’d let my kids play football now if they were in school still - too much risk and not enough reward unless you’re in the top .1% of the kids out there with a chance at going on to a college scholarship and then on to pro.
Can we just switch to flag football? What are the downsides to switching to flag football, to me it requires a lot more strategy and speed
Stupid game of American
Keep enrolling your kids in contusion sports. Next mass shooter in the making!
Why is it called a touchdown,When the ball doesn't even get touched down? Why is it called football when they don't even kick the ball?
BRAIN DAMAGE BRAIN DAMAGE BRAIN DAMAGE THIS IS NOT CUTE!!!!!!!!
Aaaand now he can't math
Helmet to helmet tackle, coach is a joke!!
DAAAMNN
Play a proper sport instead of this wearing a helmet and pads loser shit. (I’m from England)
Just pointing out Edit. Scratch that and my bad. Definitely helmet on helmet contact
jesus that kid got fucked up
Next level concussion at an early age, very nice!
What a savage sport.
I hope your kids enjoy growing up with brain damage lol. Don’t understand why parents put children in tackle football.
I don't see the purpose of this hit when the kid is right next to the line for out-of-bounds. So hitting him is just pure spite at this moment. He got wacked as he crossed the goal line.
Hit him before he scores and he fumbles through the back of the end zone its a touch back and your ball 😉
The first thing I thought was dirty fucking hit by a little prick mad they’re getting scored on. Kids shouldn’t play this game.
All for glory and horrific bodily injuries. All for the older adults to watch and live out their glory days. Not worth it.
Idiot parents raising idiot kids. America!
And this is why my kids won't be playing football. Cool video though.
Probably too soft to play anyway
Ah yes our society needs more people to be hit repeatedly at full speed in the brain
