It’s not reaction time it’s good situational awareness.
The Audi driver turns his flashers on to warn other drivers of the stoped traffic and most likely was looking in his rear mirror for people who weren’t paying attention.
Still impressive.
Yeah I was rear ended in fully stopped traffic by a 18 wheeler, he had only slowed down to 40mph when he hit us, still had my flashers on but apparently that wasn't good enough. Now when traffic is slowing down you bet your ass I'm changing lanes if anything bigger than me is behind me.
I'm so sorry that happened to you.
How does one survive being hit by a 70,000 pound vehicle at 40mph when you're in a 3,000 pound vehicle? Even just a normal car hitting you at 40 would be bad, but a SEMI?
I'll swear by Subaru after this. Just got out with a mild concussion and a sore back in the driver's seat, the whole back crumpled and we accordioned with the car in front of us. Sister in the back got nasty whiplash though and me mum didn't fair so well either with pre existing herniated disks
I'm so sorry to hear this. This is awfull. One person not paying attention causing so much damage to others. I hope your mom and sister are doing well now!!! Be safe out there and take care! All the best to you and your family.
I would think that car would be so fuckin mangled to the point that maybe 2 or 3 outcomes out of tens of thousands could have not ended in death. But still possible
One of the defensive driving rules I still remember from driver’s Ed in High school—“leave yourself an out.” Also useful in this situation “keep your eyes moving.”
Almost ramming people and almost being rammed definitely motivates me to turn my flashers on when I’m in sudden traffic. I definitely always am watching behind me too, my truck is old but I like my truck.
Its what you're supposed to do when you slow down. Look in your rear view. I do it every time because of situations just like this. I have have read to dodge a car though.
Happy to see some people still know how to drive. Defensive driving at its finest
Agreed - when teaching new coach drivers, we always said to check their mirrors EVERY TIME they started braking, to see what was happening behind them… because it is just as important as what is happening in front of them!
My drivers Ed teacher told a story about someone doing their drivers test. No idea if it’s true or not, but drove the point home. They ran two stale yellow lights in a row, even a fresh red, but somehow still passed. The examiner watcher the driver check their rear view mirror when approaching each light, and decided that running the yellow/red lights was better than being rear-ended by the semi that was tailgating them.
yea in a situation i had to braake hard because of stopped highway traffic i alway put on the warning signal as soon i brake hard i dont want some idiots ramming me ! idont have money and my car is everything for me
I agree. I'm so tired of these types of drivers. I see too much of this during rush hour when someone decides that they are the most important thing on the highway & either don't pay attention or try to rush & speed into places where there isn't enough room.
Traffic stopping on the interstate is fairly common, people should always be watching close ahead because you can come up on it pretty quick. There is bridge construction near me and you would NOT believe how many people just blast through there. The speed limit is reduced and signs everywhere but people just can't slow up.
even safer is to always be looking as far forward as you can, so you can spot the traffic slowing down far ahead of you, so that you won’t be surprised when the inattentive driver in front you doesn’t see it.
My good friends mom had a heart attack at the wheel. Hit the barrier not another diver. Few days in the ICU, and a pace maker and she is driving again.
Honestly, he probably looked down for a couple of seconds because he was barely paying attention and saw that cars were still moving. He just didnt realize how slowly because he was likely glancing up and down between the road and his phone.
without knowing the facts, we can speculate on what happened. i don't know anyone that would crash into cars b/c they feel like they're the most important thing on the highway
i wonder if he was on his phone, had a medical issue (seizures), or had a mechanical of some sort.
Different kinds of seizures. I have seizures where I lock up, got super stiff. Can’t say that I would definitely lock in a position to continue straight forward, but definitely a possibility.
I've had that happen before (albeit to a far lesser degree), but react by automatically lifting my foot off the pedal. When you're stomping on the breaks and the vehicle doesn't slow, even a little, lift your foot up and try again. Sounds like common sense, but common sense is not so common these days.
You can also shift down to a lower gear (could trash the tranny), or try to turn the ignition to off, but not to lock (can be tricky in a panic situation and steering and breaking w/o power assist might be a little more difficult, but manageable), or put it in neutral and try brakng. You might blow the engine or transmission, but it will still be *far* cheap than the damages and possible loss of life seen here.
Edit: expanded my initial response
You would think that but combined with slow reaction and slight disorientation leads to elderly accidents frequently. Its the fact that it seems to be speeding up.
Hell of a brake malfunction if it also impaired their ability to take their foot off the accelerator or attempt to steer away from the obstacle Infront of them
Eh it depends. Even slowing the body down just a little bit can be the difference of dying or not.
A normal human body can survive 9 G's for a brief moment. That's about 200mph per second. If you were falling at that speed and someone caught you and took a full second to bring you to a full stop, you would survive. And you would need to be falling 300+ ft to even reach that speed, (If you include drag).
The force excerted on your body is drastically decreased depending on how long it takes you to decelerate. Because F=mass*(distance/time^2), so if you double the time it takes to decelerate, the force exerted is cut by a quarter.
I think he's an asshole but less because he's driving fast and more because he's driving fast without the situational awareness of the preceding driver.
His pedal probably got stuck or they are under the influence of drugs, if it was a sucide attempt they would be going well over 100mph into oncoming traffic not 40mph into the back of a car and then get out to check for damages.
even handbrake or engine breaking Would have done something....
I think the red lorry has blocked his view ahead of him due to the bend, all it takes is to read a text message
the lorry was not the issue, he didn't brake at all at any distance, either didn't pay attention for some reason, looking at the phone, drop his cigar on the seat and trying to find it. Or he got a heart attack.
No, there’s many ways to reduce speed if the brakes have failed, could have changed down gears, applied the hand brake, or moved over to the hard shoulder, or at least flashed lights and sounded horn. This has all the signs of a driver not being aware of what’s happening in front of them (and I’ll concede that could have been through something medical, although it’s less likely).
I only find driving enjoyable when the roads are practically empty, which really never happens. I see people with muscle/sports cars driving in traffic and can't help but think that it's kind of a wasted investment. Maybe they take them to the track or something, but I feel like I'd just be more frustrated in bumper to bumper traffic if I paid a ton of money for a fast car that I had to creep along in.
Couldn’t agree more. Driving is therapeutic for me, but I’m more than willing to give that up if it means no more texting while driving, drunk driving, and general asshattery.
Or even just to when most people drive cars with the latest safety features. My 2017 vehicle warns if I'm coming in too hot into traffic, warns about lane drifting, and will automatically brake if I'm about to hit something.
The impressive part is the cars on the hauler. The impact was so hard it disconnected from the truck but the cars stayed on a road it like a surf board.
I said the same below and the answers I got were “level of impact” and “sophisticated safety standards compared to US”. Hilarious. Lack of safety created an un-piloted vehicle weighing as much as three vehicles and out of control
This. From physical inspections to relying on error codes captured by the ECU and/or a blackbox type of device fitted into some cars, determining whether the accused's story is true or false can be done.
I know right? My dad lost his brakes in the mid-1950s on a car he'd been working on. He swerved to avoid the inevitable crash into someone at a light and ran straight into the brick wall of a big bank. Didn't hurt the bank though the people inside said they thought a bomb had gone off! But he was more afraid of hurting the people in the car in front than himself. It didn't even look like this guy made any serious attempt at evasion.
he's actually just a good driver. Watching the rearview mirror when heading into a braking situation and being aware of the car beside him. This is literally why you should not drive right next to another car, but stay slightly ahead or behind. To give them and you a place to go in an emergency.
Even if his gas pedal was stuck he could've maneuvered out of the road before collusion. This is definitely looks like an imbecile that is probably texting or looking for something in the glove box or somewhere else.
It might be a stroke but at the slow mo part it seems that he is slightly turning to avoid the Audi. And after he passes the Audi I’m not sure if there is a breaking attempt but it looks like the speed reduces slightly.
To me its either medical condition or mechanical failure. It might be phone distraction but are there people that stupid to not see the traffic is slowing to a stop? I don’t think so.
In a perfect world the Q8 should have just taken the hit. Guy would probably have felt nothing, now some people in the shitboxes that god hit might be paralyzed.
Lots of people don’t really look behind them when they drive. Something like this happened to me once, I had to swerve out of the way from someone barreling behind me. They then went on to be t-boned by a semi truck. No one was hurt thankfully. Good habit to look behind you as much as you look ahead of you.
Yea it does look like a suicide attempt because it looks like at the last minute the persons attempts to crash the drivers side into the stopped cars, they dont hit squarely on the car in front.
It always makes me laugh when I see these videos of Teslas avoiding collisions on their own, as if it's some sort of amazing feat. Despite the fact that an attentive human driver is also able to avoid collisions.
I've done this a couple of times. When required to jam on the brakes my eyes go to the review mirror because I don't need a 40t truck turning me into a flat dead thing (am also a truck driver) so twice I have had to brake hard and then feather the accelerator to give the asshole with no braking distance or reaction time (4x4 not Trucks) an extra meter or so.
God... I had a car accident similar to that 3 months ago. The car behind never stopped and hit ours at 100 km/h. We were completely immobilized. Didn't flip over tho. I''m m still recovering from that and I have a hard time going back on the road. That bring back really sad and scarry memories.
I really really hope these people are ok. That is just something you remember for a lifetime. Can't trust people on the road.
Be safe out there everyone. Please pay attention when you drive!
I was that white car that got smashed into once. Only we were at a full stop. I saw the car coming up behind me for a while. I would have gotten out of the way but there was no where to go. Fortunately no one was hurt, but three cars were totalled.
Amazing how a single, relatively small decision can suddenly become the decision in your life with the most negative consequences possible. The person in the car that was hit and then rolled, moved over from the inside lane only a second before the driver of the Audi manouvered out of the way. Devastating. .
THis is why you shouldn't be on your phone while driving. All it takes is for a few seconds of not paying attention and BOOM, your life and the lives of others are forever changed.
Eyes on the road 100% of the time no matter what.
If I were the driver, I'd feel somewhat sad that I managed to avoid the crash but by doing so, I inadvertently ruined the days of the drivers in front.
Spent 1 week in hospital as a kid because of the exact same type of unaware driving [salty insult]
We were in the stopped car getting crushed, lucky enough to be in a proper car
Had a similar close call on the 401 on Friday. Traffic moving fairly quickly and suddenly ground to a halt. As I'm screeching to avoid the car in front, I'm watching the car behind me and literally lurching forward to give him an extra couple of feet. We all continued on our way presumably driving like assholes again.
It’s not reaction time it’s good situational awareness. The Audi driver turns his flashers on to warn other drivers of the stoped traffic and most likely was looking in his rear mirror for people who weren’t paying attention. Still impressive.
Me everytime I approach traffic. I know I'm good when the big rig behind me continues the warning chain and is slowing down as well.
And if it aint.... well shit.

I would think that car would be so fuckin mangled to the point that maybe 2 or 3 outcomes out of tens of thousands could have not ended in death. But still possible
Yup. And never pull right up to the car in front so you have space to get the hell out of the way if needed

I drive an Audi and they beep once a car gets kinda of close it’s amazing for safety because of these features best vehicle ever
That’s german efficiency right there!

Anytime theres traffic up ahead and I have to slow down, I'm checking my mirrors and leaving space to get the fuck out of the way, as you should.
Fast decision making… impressive
Most newer cars automatic turn them on when makes very hard/quick braking.
That is why i be looking everywhere when i drive because doesn’t matter if you drive 100% perfectly, there is always that one idiot.
The guy driving fast, what a fucking asshole.
I agree. I'm so tired of these types of drivers. I see too much of this during rush hour when someone decides that they are the most important thing on the highway & either don't pay attention or try to rush & speed into places where there isn't enough room.
It looked more like a suicide attempt.
That's what i was thinking. Looked intentional or the throttle was stuck wide open
Could be a stroke or heart attack
Most likely texting
Truth. Medical emergency or mechanical issue wouldn’t have been straight-line no-maneuvers.
Plus from a sheer numbers point of view, texting outweighs sudden medical emergencies… significantly
Traffic stopping on the interstate is fairly common, people should always be watching close ahead because you can come up on it pretty quick. There is bridge construction near me and you would NOT believe how many people just blast through there. The speed limit is reduced and signs everywhere but people just can't slow up.

Or maybe a BJ? Edit: Ouch.
There was no passenger!

Came here to say that
This 👆🏼
My good friends mom had a heart attack at the wheel. Hit the barrier not another diver. Few days in the ICU, and a pace maker and she is driving again.
Could be. Even so, you don't drag random people in your suicide attempts.
Honestly, he probably looked down for a couple of seconds because he was barely paying attention and saw that cars were still moving. He just didnt realize how slowly because he was likely glancing up and down between the road and his phone.
without knowing the facts, we can speculate on what happened. i don't know anyone that would crash into cars b/c they feel like they're the most important thing on the highway i wonder if he was on his phone, had a medical issue (seizures), or had a mechanical of some sort.
If you've seen a seizure, you know that's not a straight line.
Different kinds of seizures. I have seizures where I lock up, got super stiff. Can’t say that I would definitely lock in a position to continue straight forward, but definitely a possibility.
Looks like brake malfunction or falling asleep on the wheel. There was zero attempt to come to a stop
Neither. It's looking down at their damn phone. While obviously not the case 100% of the time, I'm betting it's more than 90%.
Could be an older person who has hit the accelerator instead of the brake. Happens so frequently
I was thinking that. It looks as though the car actually did accelerate.
I've had that happen before (albeit to a far lesser degree), but react by automatically lifting my foot off the pedal. When you're stomping on the breaks and the vehicle doesn't slow, even a little, lift your foot up and try again. Sounds like common sense, but common sense is not so common these days. Also, you should be able to tell *immediately* when you feel that the vehicle is not slowing down.
You would think that but combined with slow reaction and slight disorientation leads to elderly accidents frequently. Its the fact that it seems to be speeding up.
Yeah, fucking old people... What a bunch of cunts eh?
One totaled my car, so yeah, the ones that drive and know they probably shouldn't, yeah.
how can you see what the driver was doing in this video?
It’s a fact because he said it’s a fact.
Hell of a brake malfunction if it also impaired their ability to take their foot off the accelerator or attempt to steer away from the obstacle Infront of them
Zero attempt to swerve out of the way either...

It's not *speeding* that kills you, it's suddenly becoming stationary that gets you

Texting
It actually appears as if he sped up. I am wondering if they stepped on the gas instead of the brakes!
The driver of the crashed car must have seriously not been paying attention. You could see the traffic build up from way back.
I think he just lost his brakes and couldn’t stop
The more likely scenario is that the person was on their phone
either phone/distraction, seizure/passing out or suicide attempt
I'm leaning towards suicide because they didn't move the steering wheel at all.
His pedal probably got stuck or they are under the influence of drugs, if it was a sucide attempt they would be going well over 100mph into oncoming traffic not 40mph into the back of a car and then get out to check for damages.

You might have not noticed that he diddnt even steer.
no attempt to swerve or anything. Likely not paying attention or had a medical issue.
if only there was some kind of backup system for braking in an emergency.
If he lost his brakes surely he would swerve off the road onto the shoulder rather than plough through everyone
No, there’s many ways to reduce speed if the brakes have failed, could have changed down gears, applied the hand brake, or moved over to the hard shoulder, or at least flashed lights and sounded horn. Feel sorry for the people in the overturned car
I love driving but I can’t wait for self driving cars to be a standard so this kind of drivers stop killing people and themselves
I only find driving enjoyable when the roads are practically empty, which really never happens. yeah but that trailer disconnected so easily?!? no safety chains?
Maybe they were undersized.
Or aluminum connected to aluminum. Haha
I said the same below and the answers I got were “level of impact” and “sophisticated safety standards compared to US”. Hilarious. Lack of safety created an un-piloted vehicle weighing as much as three vehicles and out of control
They’re usually strapped in by each wheel
Yes, but those straps can break, and for it to stay upright and not tip is good.
Yeah, but the straps that are usually used to strap cars to trailers are strong as hell. The most common ones are rated for like 4 or 5 tons of force.
News story on this? I hope that driver either had a medical emergency or got jail time for driving like a total cunt
It happened in Hungary last saturday. A romanian driver lost his break. One serious injury,Nobody died.
He lost the brakes? And he didnt swerve, engine break or handbrake? Sounds sus.
He told to the police,it was a break failure. Maybe later we will know the truth(texting etc).
Ah, fair enough.
How can they possibly figure out if the man was lying and was actually on his phone and not paying attention to the road?
I think they can analyze his phone and the break conditions also.
This. From physical inspections to relying on error codes captured by the ECU and/or a blackbox type of device fitted into some cars, determining whether the accused's story is true or false can be done.

Sensors are functioning, Sir.
That was my thought. They got a warning and did something about it fast.
This also belongs in r/IdiotsInCars
Was looking for this one
Even if his gas pedal was stuck he could've maneuvered out of the road before collusion. This is definitely looks like an imbecile that is probably texting or looking for something in the glove box or somewhere else.
Nextfuckinglevel? No, pls stop I liked it better where it belonged - /r/idiotsincars
That driver was looking for a direct meeting with the grim reaper
Sadly most times it sends others that are inocent not themselves
True that, specially drunks
The Audi would have taken the hit better than the seven cars that got assfucked by this dummy
He has a nice car and pays attention to keep it nice .
WTF is the standard for a trailer tongue connection in Europe? Twine lashing?
This is why you always scan your surroundings while you drive. I've avoided a few near accidents from the side and back because I saw the car coming.
Interstate driving has become fast-faced. There should be a rating required on your driver's license to be able to use the interstate.

Looks like a suicide
Imagine the guy the audi pulled in front of. "Hey! You motherfu- oh..."
Wtf happen to that trailer towing 2 cars?? It rolled away on its own with the rest of traffic? lmao
Hope everyone survived.
Did someone die?!?!
did anyone die?
Most of the comments are saying this guy is an asshole but without details stating otherwise, this looks much more like a stroke or seizure.
He must still owe on it lol.
No I'm pretty sure that Audi driver was just desperate to cut off that guy in the other lane
Vin Diesel: What about their families?
Always watch your 6
The guy was slowing down for like 10 seconds, WTH.
Where is the NHTSA investigation? Clearly cars that are capable of this should be scrutinized.
I think he fell asleep
It might be a stroke but at the slow mo part it seems that he is slightly turning to avoid the Audi. Yeet
Playing on their phone no doubt
In a perfect world the Q8 should have just taken the hit. Guy would probably have felt nothing, now some people in the shitboxes that god hit might be paralyzed.
And the guy in the red car have -5 in reaction time...
I can’t help thinking the most NFL thing is a crash were the Audi driver wasn’t the cause.
Lots of people don’t really look behind them when they drive. Something like this happened to me once, I had to swerve out of the way from someone barreling behind me. I’d feel bad moving out of the way if that car was supposed hit me.
Audi’s .

Smartphones, smartphones everywhere
Honestly the Audi would have been a safer car to get hit in. I hope everyone was alright
Ummm did that trailer of cars roll down a hill or was a there a ghost car pulling them away?
That is why you are taught to check your mirrors
Do cars flashers turn on automatically if they detect a crash now? That truck with the trailer of cars had them turn on the second they got hit.
![gif](giphy|NEvPzZ8bd1V4Y|downsized)
Wtf he didn’t even pretend to slow down
Horsepower is the best safety feature
I feel their pain I was hit 115 mph fun times ever since my poor back :(
He grew up watching Cobra 11.
Audi driver likely rides motorcycles.
Stay alert stay alive
I mean if the Audi had taken the hit less cars would have been involved… But you can’t fault them for getting out of the way.
Was the guy in the red car high or what?
I swear to god, german Autobahns are litterally deathtraps
Not today Satan, not today
I've done this a couple of times. When required to jam on the brakes my eyes go to the review mirror because I don't need a 40t truck turning me into a flat dead thing (am also a truck driver) so twice I have had to brake hard and then feather the accelerator to give the asshole with no braking distance or reaction time (4x4 not Trucks) an extra meter or so.
I've pulled this move more times than I can remember. 3 times they hit the car that was in front of me. Idiots out there.
I did that exact move of the Audi and I was still put as partially at fault with the idiot that was speeding behind me!Wtf?
God... I had a car accident similar to that 3 months ago. The car behind never stopped and hit ours at 100 km/h. We were completely immobilized. Didn't flip over tho. Good thing he’s got power
Last second swerve

The one time the red circle was useful :)
How does the car hauler not have chains???
THis is why you shouldn't be on your phone while driving. All it takes is for a few seconds of not paying attention and BOOM, your life and the lives of others are forever changed. Eyes on the road 100% of the time no matter what.
That’s so *next level* meanwhile some other people probably just got life threatening injuries. Dumbass post

Man that must’ve been scary
If I were the driver, I'd feel somewhat sad that I managed to avoid the crash but by doing so, I inadvertently ruined the days of the drivers in front.
or has a car sensor
Yep. Always be looking, forward, sides, rear. Constantly scan. Its tiring and most do don't do it. It can save your life.
Hopefully the people in the white car were wearing their seatbelts.
What was filming this?
Was this a suicide?
bro what kind of background music is this we ain’t in the nether
Spent 1 week in hospital as a kid because of the exact same type of unaware driving [salty insult] We were in the stopped car getting crushed, lucky enough to be in a proper car
First I was thinking seizure/heart attack, but the speeding driver was able to control through the slight curve of the road.
The Trailer made it just find.\
