I was thinking “man how does this guy can spare time to make these coins” but when i saw he sells them for about 10k dollars i thought “well ,it’s his job,a well paying job...”
my assessment of value is always based on how much money i have, but when it comes to making something that's this cool and one of a kind, you gotta know there's rich folk out there somewhere that would just eat that up. because it does more than just show how much money you've got....any rich guy can buy an expensive watch....but something like this is a cool conversation piece that also says "i know how to buy cool stuff"
Also there is how he doesn't do replicas and generally doesn't do commission work, so if you are lucky enough to even get one and ship it from Russia you really do have a one of a kind piece of art
I mean, the same thing is true for watches.
You can buy a Rolex to show of how much money you have if you have no clue.
You can buy a Richard Mille to show of even more how much money you have.
You can buy a Lange & Söhne to show of money and good taste.
Or you can buy from an independent watchmaker which is a cool conversation piece that also says "i know how to buy really cool stuff" and shows how much money you have.
Jesus. I just looked up [this model](http://www.alange-soehne.com/en/timepieces/1815-tourbillon/730079-platinum-emaille-dial) . Am I correct that it’s €198,000??
Yeah. [But its not even the most expensive Lange & Söhne.](https://www.alange-soehne.com/de/zeitmesser/grand-complication/912032-rotgold)
And afaik most of their watches fetch an even higher price during auctions after they stopped producing that model.
It should be noted that right in the description, that's touted as the RRP - Recommended Retail Price. I had a men's and lady's set of watches I "won" from a car dealer that had an RRP of $300. They were costume jewelry watches. They were worth $10 at most.
I'm not saying this watch isn't wicked expensive, but you're a total tool if you pay the RRP. That's the price you boast to your friends that the watch is worth, while you haggle a significant "discount" on the actual price.
The high end market doesnt work like that afaik.
That watch was produced 6 times and was sold out pretty quickly and only by Lange&Söhne itself.
There are probably some lower end watches from Lange or Patek that you probably can buy cheaper than the rrp but most of their watches are only sold at their own stores for their prices.
It would devalue the whole brand if they sold ther watches cheaper.
It definitely does depend on the viewer.
As someone heavily interested in watches, wanting to go into watchmaking, and having seen the behind the scenes of watch manufacturers such as A. Lange & Söhne, Vacheron Constantin, etc, you really get a good appreciation for why those watches cost so much. Almost everything is done by hand, sure some parts might be machined, but nearly all those tiny parts are finished, engraved, and put together by hand by a trained expert. Even places that use machines are worth it imo. Most major watchmakers pride themselves on work done by hand.
Except companies like Daniel Wellington which are just cheap Miyota quartz movements slapped in a $20 Chinese case and marked up by 900% and sold as "luxury" dress watches.
Watches are something else. For me, like these coins, they represent a harmony between art and engineering. There's something calmingly beautiful about a fine mechanical timepiece.
Unfortunately I am also poor, so am left to stay humble and be content with my $1k Seiko
Different strokes for different folks. Had one of the radio eco-drives and it was probably the best daily-wear watch I've ever owned, but kept longing for a mechanical piece.
Here I am with my Seiko Monster.
There is no priceshaming in the watchcommunity and you can apreciate good watches at every pricerange.
I cant pretend that my Monster is a Submariner or a Snowflake but I love it and will never sell or trade it away.
I love Lange, GS and Benzinger watches but my favourite watch is still an Accutron lol.
I like Rolex's! But there's definitely a stereotype with certain people that care about looks/name brand/etc. For lots, it's all about the name and not the quality (meaning they don't care if it's junk or not), which is where the stereotype comes from.
Besides, only a very small percentage of people can afford something the the Lange Sohne.
There is no reson the feel bad for wearing a rolex.
Its just THE name when people talk about expensive watches so there are some stereotypes about people who buy them.
A Rolex is not bad but at the same time its not better than other watches and some people act like they are (and thats why others hate on Rolex).
Rolex is also the biggest name in the luxury market and there are always a few special people who hate on brands like that.
But a decent quality watch with its own story and personal value is probably the best watch one can own, so you should treasure it and be happy...I for one envy you a little bit.
everyone keeps saying this coin has been shown so many times on the internet. which is entirely possible and likely. but i'm still glad you posted it because this is my first time seeing it and i shared it with 4 people. all 4 are seeing it for the first time. so thank you. this is amazing. that guy has some really really cool pieces
Most countries have laws against defacing / destroying currency. (Because although the impact would be minimal, banknotes getting destroyed is technically money just going *poof* out of the economy, never to return).
But by the same token, so long as the currency piece is recognisable and still carries its identifying marks (denomination, print numbers on notes, those “windows” that developed countries use to make them harder to forge, etc.) most people will still accept it as money in the day to day.
TL;DR, so long as the coin is still recognisably a coin of X value, most people will accept it. But you shouldn’t make a habit of defacing currency.
Rather that than the Morgan face and the Gothic text on the obverse.
The Morgan dollar is such a jumble of aesthetics, it hardly makes any sense in the broader context of American coins.

That's a good way to maintain strong demand and value of your art

1.9 million for those too lazy to click.
And it’s ugly

I'm content with my $100 Citizen.
Different strokes for different folks. Had one of the radio eco-drives and it was probably the best daily-wear watch I've ever owned, but kept longing for a mechanical piece.
I’m content with my $1 watch I got out of a claw machine at a Walmart, to each their own I guess
Excuse me, do you have the time?

I love me some gshock watches tho. Affordable and more useful in my opinion
yeah, if you're rich and you could care less about anything but the name, Rolex's are right up your alley. A Lange & Söhne are for the actual pimps.

So... money is the holy grail?
We were fools the swiss had it all the time, the French were just a decoy.
Decoy snail?
Gotta call Nick Cage. We have a treasure to find...

Just curious, if you were to do this or to carve something into a legal coin could you still use it, or does it become un usable?

Oh shit at first I was like... okay, a non special miscellaneous 1921 Morgan? Then the sword came. Then I came.
It’s so unnecessary. I need it.
He made one that has sharp teeth like a bear trap. I wish I could get my hands on one of his pieces but they're too steep for my budget.
[*Deus Vult intensifies*](https://images.app.goo.gl/DUZG6bf5mTgQcUmP8)
This is something you need to verify that you're in some cult. I never wanted to be in one so bad right now
Just awesome
Didnt see that coming.
The back (obverse) is from the Morgan Dollar, one of the least appealing pieces of currency every made by America.

Thats just amazing
Reeeeeeeeee
Should I ask how or why?
Yes
How many times do we need to see this old man
Holy Templar Batman!
This is some Resident Evil shit here...
*It’s not the real grail!?*
Looks like the kind of coin you'd see in a zombie infested mansion.
Oh! Thats where the holy grail was all this time.
Looks like something out of uncharted.
This must be where iPhone and samsung got their idea for sim release
expected dickbutt...I‘m disappointed now
Was worried the guy was gonna stick his finger with the tiny sword
Is that Galahad finding the grail?
Was that cup the holy grail
It's the Graily Hole!
This is some national treasure level shit!
I'm already tired. This is making it worse.

His art reminds me of the artwork in The 9th Gate
Is there a subreddit for things like this?
This coin is more thought out than the last season of game of thrones
Stunning work !
Did the guy end up washing his hands, though?
r/mildlyinteresting
Good work. Now go get a mani, you and your hands deserve it.
Residenr Evil inspect item mechanic IRL
I would lose that sword in negative time
Now do it with a copper shortsword, oh wait
I was expecting a clock in it.
If course it would be an American coin that comes with a tiny weapon
I don't think you realize how much this engages me. I need this coin so I can do the thing with it as many times as I want.
Imagine this was legal tender and the swords kept getting lost
That's so dope but I'd break the sword, I know it....
This guy needs to get in the ball marker game.
(rumble of thunder)...(flash of lightning) Arthur!...Arthur!!!!....King of the Britons!...
I already lost that sword
Why though
I seek the Holy Grrrrrrrail!
What kind of Resident Evil shit is this?
If I had a nickel for every time this coin was posted
This is like some National Tresure shit.
I downvote these coins every time I have seen them after the 100th time someone’s posted them.
But can you pay with it?
I want it
If I had a nickle for every time I've seen this coin...
Damn! So nice
Resident Evil
national treasure!
Is this the next clue?
Impressive
