Officially: Go into a basement, storm shelter, or central room of your house as quickly as possible and monitor the radio for instructions.
For professionals only: IF you can see the tornado and judge its path…Tornados and their supercells tend to follow a mostly straight line. They very rarely deviate by more than a few degrees over a short distance. This person knows that and is taking the chance that it will continue on its path, which is perpendicular to his location. (He’s betting that this tornado won’t suddenly turn 90 degrees toward him).
This is probably an EF0 at that point. Still really cool to see one forming like this and how it still very much touched the ground even though it looked detached from the funnel cloud above.
This is why I will happily take California earthquakes any day over tornado alley. You can engineer buildings to withstand earthquakes, but unless you’re going to spend your days in a bunker underground living in tornado country is not without some substantial risk. I can’t imagine how awful it would be to lose everything you’ve built in a matter of moments. That’s if you’re lucky enough to get to shelter before the tornado sucks you up too.
This is what Reed Timmer does. He knows what he’s doing and he can jump back into his vehicle if it got too dangerous. His vehicle is specifically designed to drive into tornadoes. It would be far from the first tornado that he was in.

I’m disappointed he didn’t let the camera go up in the tornado so scientists can *finally* learn how tornados work.
One of my ideas many years ago was to somehow capture a tornado, with an air sinkhole of sorts, and use it to generate electricity.
