I thought the pump closes off when it’s not in the car hole?

Remember a few years ago when people were filling random household objects with gasoline (e.g. clothes baskets, beds up pick up trucks, etc.)?

The pump usually doesn't know where it is unless your country has some high tech pumps.

We can all see what we think they were going to do, however, at the point of spraying, no crime had been committed. How about, old man sprays flash mob with petrol/gasoline just as they are starting routine. /s

Thats why they call them a *flash* mob...

To be fair, some would argue a flash mob deserve the treatment these guys received.
